Containing half of the world’s geothermal(地热的) features, Yellowstone provides one-of-a-kind classroom-based or experiential education. Here are some you can learn about using the park as a classroom.
A Bear’s Menu
Middle School: Sixth Grade through Eighth Grade
Subjects: Math, Science
Working in small groups, students examine the feeding habits of bears and paint pictures to show what bears do in spring, summer, fall and winter. Students use a small pattern of a bear and increase its size to construct a full-size one in order to appreciate the bear’s size.
Waters of Life: Survey of a Riparian Area
Middle School: Sixth Grade through Eighth Grade
Subject: Science
In this outdoor science activity, students investigate plants and animal life in and around a lake. Students work in groups, with each group member performing a different task: observing, recording, mapping or classifying. Finally, the team put the information together to make conclusions about the ecological connections that exist within the area surveyed.
Expedition Yellowstone: Field School
Middle School: Sixth Grade through Eighth Grade
Subjects: Literacy and Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies
This 4- to 5-day residential curriculum-based program is offered for teachers and their classes. Students learn about the natural and cultural history of Yellowstone, investigate current issues affecting the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, and promote preservation in the park and in home communities. Emphasis is on learning through direct experience in the outdoors. Students participate with teachers or parents in hikes, field investigations and discussions.
Dueling Mandates(指令)
High School: Ninth Grade through Twelfth Grade
Subject: Social Studies
Using cards describing some of the issues affecting Yellowstone National Park, students work in small groups to consider management issues that meet both of the conflicting mandates that the National Park Service must follow. Students will explore the complexities involved in making management decisions and discover the far-reaching consequences of park management decisions.

Russ Cook has taken the concept of running for charity to a whole new level. This British man, 27, completed a year-long journey Sunday to run the length of Africa. After running through 16 countries in 352 days, perseverance (毅力) fueled Cook over the finish line in Tunisia on Sunday.
The Englishman — who calls himself the “Hardest Geezer” — ran about 10, 000 miles in total, from the southern to the northern coasts of Africa, braving thieves, kidnappers and the elements as he crossed deserts, jungles and everything in between. For example, Cook faced an armed robbery in Angola, where robbers stole his and his team’s money, passports and equipment at gunpoint.
The Englishman documented his feat (壮举) of perseverance via social media, where he tried to convey the difficulty of running across the vast continent.
“Getting hit with another sandstorm this morning — taking in oxygen, chewing sand for breakfast,” he said in one post. “They’re trying to get me gone, but they just can’t.”
Cook used his social media posts to invite people from across the world to join him on his journey, and American Blake Warren told CBS News that he was lying on his sofa one Sunday afternoon when he came across a post and then made a quick decision.
“I saw it and he said everybody can come. I literally got on Skyscanner, I looked for a ticket, and 20 minutes later, I bought the ticket and here I am. I just couldn’t miss a crazy historic opportunity like this,” Warren said after taking part in the last leg of Cook’s epic run.
The Englishman has raised almost $1 million for homeless young people and clean water for Africa — as well as a possible place in the record books.
24. What can be learned about Cook during his run from paragraph 2?
A. He had no company throughout. B. He was always in physical comfort.
C. His journey was free from danger. D. He faced extreme weather conditions.
25. What can we say about Warren’s decision to join Cook’s journey?
A. It was his long expectation. B. It was an immediate reaction.
C. It was a well-thought-out plan. D. It was a requirement for his job.
26. Why did Cook run across Africa?
A. To prove his athletic abilities. B. To break the world record.
C. To collect money for good causes. D. To gain social media fame.
27. Which of the following can best describe Cook?
A. Loving and determined. B. Adventurous and talented.
C. Ambitious and self-centered. D. Funny and peace-loving.

The world is full of people with a poor sense of direction — and their opposites, the folks who always seem to know exactly where they are and how to get where they want to go. By using technologies such as virtual reality and GPS tracking, scientists have been able to watch hundreds, sometimes even millions of people trying to find their way through complex spaces, and to measure how well they do. Though there’s still much to learn, the research suggests that to some extent, navigation (导航) skills are shaped by upbringing.
In 2020, researchers at Queen Mary University of London compared the performance of more than 2, 600 identical and nonidentical twins as they navigated through a virtual environment to test whether navigational ability runs in families. It does, they found — but only modestly. Instead, the biggest contributor to people’s performance was what geneticists (遗传学者) call the “nonshared environment” — that is, the unique experiences each person gets as their life unfolds. Good navigators, it appears, are mostly made, not born.
Hugo Spiers’ experiment at University College London highlighted the impact of experience and culture on wayfinding skills. People from Nordic countries tended to be slightly better navigators, perhaps because the sport of orienteering (定向越野) , which combines cross-country running and navigation, is popular in those countries. Country folks did better, on average, than people from cities. And among city residents, those from cities with more chaotic street networks such as those in the older parts of European cities did better than those from cities like Chicago, where the streets form a regular grid (网格) , perhaps because residents of grid cities don’t need to build such complex mental maps.
Results like these suggest that an individual’s life experience may be one of the biggest determinants of how well they navigate. Indeed, experience may even cause one of the most consistent findings in navigation: men tend to perform better than women. It turns out this gender difference is more a question of culture and experience than of inborn ability.
28. What does the 2020 study on twins suggest about navigational ability?
A. It hardly changes. B. It decreases with age.
C. It’s related to growth. D. It’s remarkably genetic.
29. What might lead to Nordic individuals’ greater navigational ability?
A. Their genetic advantages. B. The popularity of a sport.
C. The simple street networks. D. The superior navigation tools.
30. What does the author imply in the last paragraph?
A. Women tend to have good navigation skills. B. Men perform better than woman naturally.
C. There is no gender difference in navigation. D. Men gather more experience at navigating.
31. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. What Matters about Navigation Skills? B. Genes Determine Navigation Ability.
C. How Can Culture Factors Be Developed? D. Tips on Forming Good Navigation Skills.

Lower-income communities across the United States have long been much slower to adopt solar power than their wealthier neighbors, even when local and federal (联邦的) agencies offer tax breaks and other financial measures. But, commercial and industrial rooftops, such as those among office buildings and factories, offer a big opportunity to reduce what researchers call the “solar equity gap”, according to a new study led by researchers at Stanford University.
“The solar equity gap is a serious problem in poor communities, in part because of income inequalities, but also because residential solar power isn’t usually practical for people who don’t own their homes, ” said Ram Rajagopal, a senior author of the study. “This new study shows that commercial and industrial properties have the capacity to host solar resources to fill in part of that gap. ”
“Using Stanford’ s DeepSolar database, we estimated that solar panels on non-residential buildings could meet more than a fifth of annual residential electricity demand in almost two-thirds of poor communities, ” said Moritz Wussow, the study’s lead author.
To measure the distribution of non-residential solar power devices, the researchers used satellite images and artificial intelligence to identify the number and size of rooftop solar panels in 72, 739 census tracts (人口普查区) across the United States. About one-third of those tracts are assessed to be impoverished by the U. S. government.
If commercial and industrial solar panels can feed their electricity into local power grids, lower-income residents could gain access through community subscriptions rather than by building their own rooftop panels. Commercial and industrial sites also offer greater advantages, compared to individual household solar panels.
“Beyond reducing carbon emissions (碳排放) and slowing climate change, increased access to solar power would offer concrete local benefits to lower-income communities,” said Moritz Wussow.
“This would promote local clean and low-cost energy generation, which would also increase the restoration from power failure and reduce the pollution caused by fossil (化石) fuel power plants—many of which are located in lower-income areas.”
32. What is a barrier to solar power adoption in lower-income communities?
A. The high fixing cost. B. The government’s opposition.
C. Lack of buildings. D. People’s negative attitude.
33. Which can best replace the underlined word “impoverished” in paragraph 4?
A. Disadvantaged. B. Splendid. C. Safe. D. Crowded.
34. The lower-income residents could gain electricity from solar panels by _______.
A. referring to satellite images B. buying it from their community
C. using artificial intelligence D. borrowing it from the industries
35. How could increased solar power access impact lower-income communities?
A. They will end carbon emissions. B. The low-cost energy will disappear.
C. Fossil fuels plants will be replaced. D. Their pollution levels will be lowered.

A young man was driving home one evening on a two-lane (道) country road. Work in this small mid-western community was almost as slow as his old car, and he didn’t know whether to look for it or not. Ever since the factory closed, he’d been unemployed, and with winter coming on, the cold had finally hit home.
It was starting to get dark and light snow was coming down. He’d better get a move on. Then he saw an old lady trapped on the side of the road. But even in the dim (昏暗的) light of day, he could see she needed help. So he pulled up in front of her car and got out.
Even with the smile on his face, she was worried. No one had stopped to help for the last hour or so. Was he going to hurt her? He didn’t look safe and seemed jobless. He looked poor and hungry. He could see that she was frightened, standing out there in the cold. He knew how she felt. He said, “I’m here to help you, Ma’ am. Why don’t you wait in the car where it’s warm? By the way, my name is Bryan. ” The lady felt a little relieved after hearing what Bryan said. She got in her car and thought maybe he was helping for money.
Bryan found all she had was a flat tire, but for an old lady, that was bad enough. He crawled (爬) under the car looking for a place to put the jack (千斤顶) , cutting his finger a time or two. Soon he was able to change the tire. But he had to get dirty and his hands were hurt. As he was doing the work, she rolled down the window and began to talk to him. She told him that she was from St. Louis and was only just passing through.

【答案】Dear Chuck,
I am writing to share with you the research activity I attended in the city culture centre last Saturday. It was a day filled with discovery and learning as we explored the heart of our city’s culture.
During our visit, we explored the world of traditional Chinese calligraphy and painting. The exhibition halls were decorated with breathtaking brushwork, each piece carrying its own historical tale. We visited exhibits featuring traditional crafts and historical artifacts. A live paper-cutting demonstration was particularly captivating, demonstrating the skills behind these complex art forms.
The visit has deepened my respect for our cultural heritages. It was a reminder of the wealth of our traditions and the duty to sustain them.
Yours,

第二节 (满分25分)
【67题答案】
【答案】
She expressed her gratitude for his coming to her aid. The old lady felt so warm in her inner heart as she watched Bryan, a stranger, selflessly change her flat tire in the cold. “You’ve been a blessing today, Bryan, ” she said. Bryan just smiled, saying it was nothing. She asked him how much she owed him. Any amount would have been all right with her. She had already imagined all the awful things that could have happened had he not stopped. But he simply declined and then the car could start again.
Before she drove off, the old lady handed him a small piece of paper with her phone number and address. It read, “If you’re ever in St. Louis, come to me. Maybe I can help you. ” Bryan smiled, feeling a warmth that transcended the cold evening. As he watched her car disappear into the distance, he realized that sometimes, the simple act of helping others can light up not just their day, but also one’s own heart. He headed home, determined to keep looking for work, knowing that kindness always finds a way.
