Her biggest achievement: In 1972, she led her medical team to manage to extract qinghaosu from a Chinese herb, which is very effective in fighting malaria.

A short biography of Tu Youyou
Tu youyou, a famous female chemist and scientist, was born in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province in 1930. At the age of 21, she was admitted into Beijing Medical College, majoring in making medicine. Since her graduation in 1955, she has been working for China Academy of Chinese Medical Science. In 1969, Ms Tu worked as the leader of a research team aiming to discover a treatment for malaria. Three years later, she succeeded in extracting qinghaosu from a Chinese herb to cure those patients of malaria.
A New Drug Certificate for qinghaosu was issued by the Ministry of Health of China in 1986. To our excitement, Ms Tu was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine for discovering a novel therapy against malaria in 2015.
In fact, after she made countless attempts, she finally made it with determination. What impresses me most is her persistence and strong will.
