A
Do you know the sun’s warmth is a kind of useful energy? Want to try using it yourself? Let’s do a cool project—making a solar tower!
You can try this project at home. You just need some tape, a pin (别针), paper, three cans and two big thick books. Now, we’re going to build the solar tower. First, make a pinwheel (纸风车) with a piece of square paper. In the second stage, cut off the tops and bottoms of the cans, place the cans on top of each other and tape them together. Next, use a pin to connect the pinwheel with the tower. Finally, put the can tower on top of the books, which are 5 cm apart from each other. So there’s a gap (间隔) at the bottom, allowing the air to enter the tower.
Now, all we have to do is to set the whole thing near a window where there’s direct sunlight. When the sun shines on the tower, it gets hot and warms the air in it. The warmer air moves upward through the tower and makes the pinwheel turn around as it passes by. Then cooler air comes in through the gap from the bottom of the tower, gets heated up, and rises, so the cycle goes on. This is how it works. How amazing!
So next time you feel the warm sun on your face, remember that it’s more than just a nice feeling—sunlight is a powerful and useful source of energy.
36.How does the writer introduce the topic?
A.By listing numbers. B.By asking questions.
C.By stating opinions. D.By giving examples.
37.How many steps does it take to build a solar tower?
A.2. B.3. C.4. D.5.
38.Why do we leave a gap between the two books?
A.To stop the tower from falling off. B.To make the air get into the tower.
C.To stop the books from heating up. D.To make the air get out of the tower.
39.How does the air travel through the tower? (for warm air; for cold air.)
A. B. C. D.
40.On which part of a newspaper can we probably find the text?
A.Science. B.Society. C.Lifestyle. D.Environment.

38.细节理解题。根据“Finally, put the can tower on top of the books, which are 5 cm apart from each other. So there’s a gap (间隔) at the bottom, allowing the air to enter the tower.”可知,在这两本书之间留出空是为了让空气进入塔内。故选B。
39.推理判断题。根据“When the sun shines on the tower, it gets hot and warms the air in it. The warmer air moves upward through the tower and makes the pinwheel turn around as it passes by. Then cooler air comes in through the gap from the bottom of the tower, gets heated up, and rises, so the cycle goes on. This is how it works.”

Thanks to Earth, we have fresh air to breathe, clean water to drink and warm sunshine to enjoy. But it seems that we may think these things are normal and not realize that our planet is getting “sick”.
Among all the environmental problems, climate change sits at the top. Global average (平均的) temperatures have risen by more than 0.5°C since 1992. A half-degree temperature rise is a big thing. It means that heat waves can last around one third longer and rainstorms will be about one third stronger. The increase in sea levels will be much higher, according to NASA.Countries like Singapore that are at low places may be covered by the ocean in the future.
But this is not the only problem people are facing. It’s getting harder to get fresh water. Ocean pollution has become serious. Since 1992, the human population has grown by 2 billion, while the populations of all other animals have fallen by nearly 30 percent.
Scientists say that we are experiencing the sixth huge extinction in history. More than two-thirds of the world’s wildlife could be gone by the end of the decade (十年) if action isn’t taken soon, according to the World Wildlife Fund. The Amur leopard, black rhino and Cross River gorilla are some animals that are in danger of dying out completely.
However, we have made some progress by making the hole in the ozone layer smaller. That’s because we gradually stopped using chemicals that can break down ozone.
This shows that when we make quick and strong decisions, we can make positive changes.
41.What may happen if global average temperatures rise by 0.5°C?
A.The ocean will cover China.
B.Cold waves can last a third longer.
C.Sea levels will be three times higher.
D.Rainstorms will be more serious.
42.What does the underlined word “extinction” probably mean?
A.繁殖 B.灭绝 C.迁徙 D.进化
43.Which of the following environmental problems are mentioned in the text?
①Air pollution. ②Ocean pollution.
③Fewer animals. ④Smaller ozone layer.
A.①② B.②④ C.①③ D.②③
44.What’s the writer’s attitude (态度) to the future of our planet?
A.Negative. B.Doubtful. C.Hopeful. D.Proud.
45.What’s the structure of the passage?
A. B. C. D.
【答案】41.D 42.B 43.D 44.C 45.A
【导语】本文主要介绍了地球上的问题。
41.细节理解题。根据“A half-degree temperature rise is a big thing. It means that heat waves can last around one third longer and rainstorms will be about one third stronger.”可知,气温上升半度是件大事,这意味着热浪持续时间会延长大约三分之一,暴雨将增强大约三分之一。故选D。
42.词义猜测题。根据“More than two-thirds of the world’s wildlife could be gone by the end of the decade (十年) if action isn’t taken soon, according to the World Wildlife Fund.”可知,据世界野生动物基金会称,如果不尽快采取行动,到本十年末,世界上超过三分之二的野生动物可能会消失。由此可知,这里的extinction应该表示“灭绝”,故选B。
43.细节理解题。根据“Ocean pollution has become serious”和“More than two-thirds of the world’s wildlife could be gone by the end of the decade (十年) if action isn’t taken soon, according to the World Wildlife Fund. ”可知,文章提到了海洋污染以及更少的动物这两个问题,故选D。
44.观点态度题。根据“This shows that when we make quick and strong decisions, we can make positive changes.”

What would you like for lunch? Maybe, a battery? Although it sounds unusual, this has already been realized by scientists as they develop electronic things you can eat.
Robofood, a program led by Dario Floreano from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne, Switzerland, has been the pioneer. Together with scientists from Wageningen University, the Netherlands, it has made a new drone (无人机). Half of the parts inside can be eaten! The program plans to create robots that can be eaten and foods that act like robots by mixing food science and robots in a new way.
According to the scientists, the wings (翅膀) of the drone were made from rice cakes glued together using oil and chocolate. This drone can find missing people and carry food or medicine necessary to them. Parts of the drone can be eaten since they meet food safety standards set up by the United Nations.
However, the main problem is finding stronger eatable materials for the drone’s wings to prepare for bad weather and high temperatures—of course, the chocolate may melt (融化) easily.
Robofood also developed an eatable sensor (感应器) to help watch stomach sickness. It’s eaten by the patient to check the conditions inside. Unlike other sensors out there today, it’s designed to be easily broken down, reducing the risk of leaving any remains inside the body.
The invention of Robofood also helps with environmental protection. The world’s first fully eatable batteries can help deal with the growing problem of throwing away used batteries. Some parts of the battery are made of vitamin B2 and another natural ingredient that can be found in many fruits including apples. So the new battery can be more friendly for nature.
46.What is Robofood going to work on?

C.The bad weather drones experience.
D.The chocolate used to make drone’s wings.
49.What do we know about the sensor by Robofood?
A.It is broken down easily.
B.It helps watch heart sickness.
C.It reduces the risk of cancer.
D.It helps protect the environment.
50.In which section of a newspaper can you probably find the text?
A.Health and sport. B.History and culture.

I wish there would be a way to describe China in a simple word but that’s impossible.
51 In my English classes when the students were asked what they would do if they only had a few hours to live, most students told me they would spend their last few hours with their families and parents.
52 I teach in Shenzhen, a beautiful city which is next to Hong Kong and I live here better. The foods are cheaper than those in the US, so are clothing and things of everyday use. People pay less for the public transportation, too.

54 I seldom saw the things mentioned of the creative changes China has made. But the economic miracles (经济奇迹) have the big problems.
55 To be honest, if I compare China with the US, my answer has always been the same: “We are not worse or better than each other; we are only different.”
A.It’s a tradition to value education in China.
B.I realize that family is everything in China.
C.I am often asked which country I consider better.

Brooke has just become the 12-ranked rock climbers in the world. One of her coaches explains that she’s so good because she has really strong fingers and the amazing flexibility (柔韧性) of a child. That helps her a lot and means she can do things older climbers have never thought of doing.
Brooke comes from a climbing family. Both her parents are past climbing champions (冠军). Her father stopped climbing some years ago, but her mother, Robyn, who won four world cup titles one after another for four years, is still climbing. She runs a club for young climbers in Colorado, USA and coaches Brooke and her teammates. Sometimes it’s difficult for mother and daughter to work together so closely, but they really respect and trust each other and Brooke says her mum is a great coach. Brooke says that her mother gives her a lot of good advice and is a very important part of her climbing life. Robyn can be strict, but she really loves climbing mountains, and she passes this passion on to her students. Robyn says “Brooke is very determined (坚决的) and is very good at encouraging herself. This helps her when she’s facing the challenges of this difficult sport. She is also very hardworking.” Success in rock climbing is something you have to work at. To be a world-class sportswoman of any kind, you have to push yourself and train hard and that’s what Brooke does, every day, at the club and at home. Brooke says that climbing is always a part of her everyday life. They even have a climbing wall in their house!
But climbing isn’t only hard work. It’s fun too. Brooke loves climbing and when she’s on a high rock, she feels happy. Strangely, she says that when she looks down, she isn’t scared. All she does is think about how cool it is to be so small compared to the rock.

A. B. C. D.

A.Eatable robots. B.Useful sensors.
C.Natural batteries. D.Amazing drones.
47.Why is the drone mentioned in the text?
A.To serve as an example.
B.To show how scientists make it.
C.To compare it with an old model.
D.To explain how hard development is.
48.What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?
A.The materials scientists find.
B.The problems scientists face.

53 However, it is reported that still there are a few children who can’t afford the money of schooling. But the government organized Project Hope many years ago. It creates conditions for the poor children to go back to school.
D.You’ll not know China unless you go closer to it.
E.I was used to reading the news of China in the US.
F.The cost of living here isn’t as high as that in the US.

56.Brooke’s mother is very good at climbing, isn’t she?
57.What does Robyn do to train young climbers?
