The earth is our home. There are some ways that you and your family can use to help the planet and make a difference.

Avoid wasting food.
Don’t take more than you can eat. About one-third of food in some areas is thrown out or wasted.
Care and repair.

Everyone knows that forests help fight climate change. However, a recent scientific report shows that the world lost 300,000 square kilometers of forests in 2024. That’s an area about the size of Italy.
According to the report, fires were the biggest cause of forest loss. ▲ This country has the largest area of rainforest in the world. Last year, it suffered from a long period of dry weather. Wildfires broke out and spread. As a result, about 25,000 square kilometers of the primary rainforest disappeared in the country. This meant fires caused 66% of its forest loss.
The second biggest cause of the world’s forest loss was clearing land for farming. As people need more farmland, they keep cutting down forests every year. In 2024, the area of forest cleared for farming increased by 14% worldwide. The situation was more severe in developing countries. For example, Bolivia’s forest loss doubled in 2024.
Without doubt, something must be done. Experts call on governments, businesses and people to work together before it is too late. It seems that China has set a good example. Thanks to cooperation at many levels, China had the biggest increase in forest area among all countries in 2023. That year alone, newly-planted trees in China covered an area of nearly 45,000 square kilometers, according to a news report. If more countries start to take action like China, the earth will become a greener plant.

A. To show why we need forests.
B. To show how terrible forest loss was.
C. To show what climate change is.

A. Serious. B. Boring. C. Balanced.
31. What’s the best title for the passage?
A. Rainforest Became Larger.
B. Farmland Area Grew Rapidly.
C. Forest Loss Worried the World.
D
Humpback whales (座头鲸) are large sea animals. They spend summers eating food in cold waters and then travel to warm tropical (热带的) areas in winter to have babies. These warm areas are called breeding grounds (繁殖地). These breeding grounds are very important for the whales, because they have the right temperature and few predators (捕食者) like killer whales. This is especially good for baby whales that don’t have much fat under their skin and can’t protect themselves well.
Now, the earth is getting warmer and warmer, and this is mainly caused by human activities, such as driving cars, running factories, and using coal, oil and gas for energy. Global warming also makes the ocean water warmer. Humpback whales need water with a temperature between 21℃ and 28℃ to have babies, as this suitable temperature helps baby whales grow quickly and stay healthy. If the ocean water gets warmer than this, the whales may have to move to a new breeding grounds, but this is hard for them because they like returning to their favorite places every year.
To predict what will happen to humpback whales in the future, scientists did a special project with the help of computer models. First, they collected data (数据) about the current (当前的) ocean temperature and how it has changed in recent years in the areas where whales breed. Then, they used computers to predict how the ocean surface temperature might change by the year 2100. They also tested two different situations: One is that people continue to use lots of fossil fuels (矿物燃料), and the other is that people turn to clean energy like solar power (太阳能).
The results of the project are very worrying. If people keep using lots of fossil fuels, about 67% of the breeding areas will become too warm, which will affect over half of the world’s humpback whales. Even with clean energy, about 35% of the breeding areas may still get too warm. Therefore, we must take action right now to protect these beautiful sea mammals (哺乳类动物) and their breeding grounds.
32. Why are breeding grounds important for humpback whales?
A.They have lots of food.
B. They can help swim faster.
C. They are safe and warm.
33. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. How scientists did the research on whales.
B. When people should start to use clean energy.
C. What computers can do to protect the whales.
34. What does the writer think of the future of humpback whales?
A. Hopeless. B. Serious. C. Cheerful.
35. What may be written in the following text?
A. The ways to save humpback whales.
B. The history of humpback whales.
C. The living areas of humpback whales.

The next day, Karma was told to be in a group she would never want — the boy who was too weak in English, and the two girls who wore strange clothes. Oh, how she wanted to be with her friends. With tears in her eyes, Karma walked up to Mrs. Bartlett. She looked at Karma and seemed to know what Karma was there for. Karma said that she should be in the “good” group. The teacher gently (温柔地) placed a hand on Karma’s shoulder. “I know _________________________, Karma,” she said. “But your group needs you. I need you to help them. Only you can help them.” Karma was surprised and moved. The teacher’s words encouraged her.
“Will you help them?” the teacher asked. “Yes,” Karma replied. Then she bravely walked over to her group. She sat down and they started. Each of them did a part according to their interests. Karma felt herself enjoying her group. They did a good job together. The group members weren’t thought to be excellent just because no one cared enough about them except Mrs. Bartlett.
