Chinese poet, critic, and translator Yu Guangzhong died at the age of 89 in Taiwan. Mr. Yu was a young college student in the Chinese mainland when his family moved to Taiwan in 1949.
Mr. Yu was prolific (多产的), publishing more than 50 books of poetry, prose (散文) criticism and translations over seven decades. He traveled frequently. Besides Hong Kong, he wrote and taught in Europe, the United States and, after the travel ban was lifted in 1987, the Chinese mainland.
“The Chinese mainland is like my mother, Taiwan is a wife, Hong Kong is a lover, and Europe is a mistress,” he wrote in a 1998 essay titled From Mother to an Affair.
In Yu Guangzhong’s poem Nostalgia (《乡愁》), he describes his memory for his late mother as a grave, which separates them into two different worlds: Nostalgia was a low grave/Me on the outside/Mother on the inside.
However, the fact that Nostalgia became so famous also disturbed Yu because among the over 1,000 poems that he had written, Nostalgia seemed to be the only one that the public ever talked about and appreciated. “I’d like to think of Nostalgia as my business card, but unfortunately it got too big that it kept people from seeing the real me,” Yu once said.
To him, writing was an inseparable part of life that shouldn’t be affected by age or anything else. He spent his whole life working, even in his 80s. Whenever people asked him whether he still kept the habit of writing up, he would always answer, “Why don’t you ask me if I’m still breathing?”
4. What can we infer from paragraph 2?
A. Mr. Yu liked travelling in Hong Kong most.
B. Mr. Yu once settled in America.
C. Foreign affairs often bothered Mr. Yu.
D. At one point, residents of Taiwan were forbidden to go to the Chinese mainland.
5. Both the essay From Mother to an Affair and the poem Nostalgia show that ______.
A. Yu lived a happy life
B. Yu missed the Chinese mainland
C Yu had complex feelings about Taiwan
D. Yu often wondered what would happen to his life
6. What can we know from paragraph 5?
A. Yu felt proud of himself.
B. Nostalgia left Yu in trouble.
C. Nostalgia was the best among Yu’s poems.
D. Many Chinese people know the poem Nostalgia.
7. The last paragraph mainly tells us that ______.
A. Mr. Yu never stopped writing
B. Mr. Yu often argued with others
C. Mr. Yu’s works will be kept alive
D. Mr. Yu were misunderstood by many people
D 5. B 6. D 7. A
根据第二段中的“Besides Hong Kong, he wrote and taught in Europe, the United States and, after the travel ban was lifted in 1987, the Chinese mainland. (除香港外,他还在欧洲、美国写作和教学,1987年旅行禁令解除后,他又前往中国大陆)”可推知,台湾人一度被禁止前往中国大陆。故选D。
【5题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段““The Chinese mainland is like my mother, Taiwan is a wife, Hong Kong is a lover, and Europe is a mistress,” he wrote in a 1998 essay titled From Mother to an Affair. (“中国大陆就像我的母亲,台湾是妻子,香港是情人,欧洲是外遇,”他在1998年一篇题为《从母亲到外遇》的文章中写道)”及第四段“In Yu Guangzhong’s poem Nostalgia (《乡愁》), he describes his memory for his late mother as a grave, which separates them into two different worlds: Nostalgia was a low grave/Me on the outside/Mother on the inside. (余光中在诗歌《乡愁》中,将对已故母亲的怀念描述为一座坟墓,将他们分隔成两个不同的世界:乡愁是一个低矮的坟墓/我在外面/母亲在里面。)”可推知,散文《从母亲到外遇》和诗歌《乡愁》都显示出余光中对中国大陆的思念。故选B。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段“However, the fact that Nostalgia became so famous also disturbed Yu because among the over 1,000 poems that he had written, Nostalgia seemed to be the only one that the public ever talked about and appreciated. “I’d like to think of Nostalgia as my business card, but unfortunately it got too big that it kept people from seeing the real me,” Yu once said. (然而,《乡愁》这首诗如此出名也让余光中感到困扰,因为他曾写下的一千多首诗中,似乎只有《乡愁》一首为公众所谈论和欣赏。“我愿意把《乡愁》视作我的名片,但遗憾的是,它太过显眼,以至于让人们忽视了真正的我,”余光中曾说道。)”可知,公众只谈论和欣赏《乡愁》,由此可推知很多中国人都知道《乡愁》这首诗。故选D。
【7题详解】
主旨大意题。根据最后一段“To him, writing was an inseparable part of life that shouldn’t be affected by age or anything else. He spent his whole life working, even in his 80s. Whenever people asked him whether he still kept the habit of writing up, he would always answer, “Why don’t you ask me if I’m still breathing?” (对他来说,写作是生命中不可分割的一部分,不应该受到年龄或其他任何东西的影响。他一生都在工作,甚至在80多岁的时候。每当人们问他是否还保持着写作的习惯,他总是回答:“你为什么不问我是否还在呼吸呢?”)”可知,最后一段主要告诉我们余光中先生一生从来没有停止过写作。故选A。

Tired of standing in line? Wait a bit longer, and you may never have to again. Everyone from Amazon to Silicon Valley startups is trying to eliminate lines in retail (零售) stores.
Amazon has opened 24 of its Amazon Go stores, which use cameras and artificial intelligence to see what you’ve taken off shelves and charge you as you walk out. Some startups are closely copying Amazon’s approach to using AIpowered cameras fixed in ceilings. But others are trying an entirely different way to skip the checkout: smart shopping carts. These companies have added cameras and sensors (传感器) to the carts, and are using AI to tell what you’ve placed in them. A builtin scale weighs items, in case you have to pay by the pound for an item. Customers pay by using a credit card, or through an online payment system. When customers exit the store, a green light on the shopping cart indicates that their orders are complete, and they’re charged.
The startups behind the smart shopping carts, including Caper and Veeve, say it’s much easier to add technology to the shopping cart than to an entire store. Amazon Go stores rely on hundreds of cameras in the ceiling. The shelves also include sensors to tell when an item is removed. Ahmed Beshry, cofounder of Caper, believes the technology to run Amazon Go is too expensive to use in a large grocery store. Neither Caper nor Veeve has said how much their smart shopping carts will cost, making it difficult to compare the different formats. Shariq Siddiqui, CEO of Veeve, said he’s finding increased interest from retailers given Amazon’s steady expansion of Amazon Go since the first Amazon Go store opened in Seattle in 2018. “We’re always happy when Amazon is doing something,” Siddiqui said. “They force retailers to get out of their old school thinking.”
Each time a business uses artificial intelligence and cameras, it raises questions about customer privacy and the impact on jobs.Beshry notes that the cameras in his smart shopping cart point down into the cart, so only customers’ hands and part of their arms will be captured (拍摄) by cameras.
8. Which of the following best explains the underlined word “eliminate” in Paragraph 1?
A. Cross. B. Remove.
C. Extend. D. Break.
9. What do we know about the smart shopping carts?
A. They are linked to the cameras fixed in the ceilings.
B. They can tell customers where to find what they want.
C. They flash the green light when the order is cancelled.
D. They are able to recognize purchases placed in them.
10. What does Beshry think of the technology applied in Amazon Go stores?
A. It is far more expensive than their smart shopping carts.
B. It may increase the cost of running a large grocery store greatly.
C. It has attracted many more retailers than before.
D It is likely to help retailers to think differently.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. The New Technology Promotes Retail Sales
B. AIpowered Cameras Are Used in Retail Stores
C. Smart Shopping Carts Will Let You Skip the Line
D. Artificial Intelligence Affects the Future Job Market
B 9. D 10. B 11. C

根据第一段中“Tired of standing in line? Wait a bit longer, and you may never have to again.(厌倦了排队?再等一段时间,你可能就再也不用这么做了。)”提出可能不再需要排队了,划线词所在句“Everyone from Amazon to Silicon Valley startups is trying to eliminate lines in retail (零售) stores.(从亚马逊(Amazon)到硅谷的初创企业,所有人都在试图eliminate零售商店里的排队现象。)”
根据第二段中“These companies have added cameras and sensors (传感器) to the carts, and are using AI to tell what you’ve placed in them.(这些公司在购物车上增加了摄像头和传感器,并使用人工智能来识别你在购物车里放了什么。)”
根据第三段中“Ahmed Beshry, cofounder of Caper, believes the technology to run Amazon Go is too expensive to use in a large grocery store.(Caper的联合创始人艾哈迈德·贝什里(Ahmed Beshry)认为,运行Amazon Go的技术过于昂贵,无法在大型杂货店中使用。)”
所以“Smart Shopping Carts Will Let You Skip the Line(智能购物车让你不用排队)”是文章最佳标题。故选C项。
D
People rarely use just one sense to understand the world, but robots usually only rely on vision and, increasingly, touch. Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) researchers find that robots could improve markedly by adding another sense: hearing.
“A lot of work showed sound could be useful, but it wasn’t clear when it came to robotics,” said Lerrel Pinto, who recently earned his Ph. D. in robotics at CMU. He and his colleagues found the performance rating was quite high, with robots that used sound successfully classifying objects 76 percent of the time.
To perform their study, the researchers created a large data set, recording — at the same time — video and audio of 60 common objects, such as toy blocks, hand tools, and tennis balls — as they slid or rolled around a tray (托盘) and crashed into its sides. The team recorded these interactions using Tilt-Bot attached to the arm of a Sawyer robot. They could place an object in Tilt-Bot and let Sawyer move Tilt-Bot in random directions as cameras and microphones recorded each action.
Though the size of this data set is the largest, other researchers have also studied how intelligent agents can collect information from sound. Oliver Kroemer, assistant professor of robotics, once led research into using sound to judge the number of materials, for example rice, by shaking a container, or calculating the flow of those materials from a spoon. The usefulness of sound for robots is therefore not surprising.
Robots can predict the sound of unseen objects with the input of existing sound programs. This study will be useful for the advancement of robotics. The next step will be making the robots work on vision and hearing at the same time. For example, if the robot sees a cup and hears it, then it ought to be able to lift and move the cup without spilling (使洒出) what is inside. If scientists work on such special subjects, robots could soon become similar to humans.
12. What is CMU’s study on?
A. How useful sound is to robots. B. How robots understand the world.
C. How many senses robots could have D. How sound determines robotic action.
13. What is Tilt-Bot according to the text?
A. A camera. B. A microphone. C. A tray. D. A block.
14. Why is Oliver Kroemer mentioned?
A. To refer to his research data. B. To explain his great achievement.
C. To prove CMU’s finding is no surprise. D. To stress uniqueness of CMU’s research.
15. What will the researchers continue to research?
A. Robots’ vision-sound-action. B. Similarities between robots and man.
C. Applications of sound in other fields. D. Improvement of robots’ control over objects.
A 13. C 14. C 15. A

根据第一段中的“Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) researchers find that robots could improve markedly by adding another sense: hearing.(卡内基梅隆大学(CMU)的研究人员发现,通过添加另一种感官——听觉,机器人的性能可以显著提升。)”以及第二段中的““A lot of work showed sound could be useful, but it wasn’t clear when it came to robotics,” said Lerrel Pinto, who recently earned his Ph. D. in robotics at CMU.( “很多研究表明声音可能是有用的,但在机器人技术领域还不清楚具体如何应用,”最近在卡内基梅隆大学获得机器人学博士学位的Lerrel Pinto说道。)” 故选A项。
根据第三段中的“To perform their study, the researchers created a large data set, recording — at the same time — video and audio of 60 common objects, such as toy blocks, hand tools, and tennis balls — as they slid or rolled around a tray (托盘) and crashed into its sides.(为了进行他们的研究,研究人员创建了一个大型数据集,同时记录了60种常见物体(如玩具积木、手工工具和网球等)的视频和音频,这些物体在托盘上滑动或滚动,并撞击托盘边缘。)”可知,研究人员将60种常见物体放在托盘里来进行实验,结合“The team recorded these interactions using Tilt-Bot attached to the arm of a Sawyer robot. They could place an object in Tilt-Bot and let Sawyer move Tilt-Bot in random directions as cameras and microphones recorded each action.(研究团队使用安装在Sawyer机器人手臂上的Tilt-Bot来记录这些互动。他们可以把一个物体放在Tilt-Bot中,然后让Sawyer以随机的方向移动Tilt-Bot,同时摄像头和麦克风记录下每一个动作。)”可知,他们通过使用固定在Sawyer机器人手臂上的Tit-Bot来记录这些互动,他们可以将物体放在Tilt-Bot里,让Sawyer朝任意方向移动Tilt-Bot,由此可推知,Tilt-Bot应该是一个托盘。故选C项。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“Oliver Kroemer, assistant professor of robotics, once led research into using sound to judge the number of materials, for example rice, by shaking a container, or calculating the flow of those materials from a spoon.(机器人学助理教授Oliver Kroemer曾经领导了一项研究,即通过摇晃容器来判断材料的数量,例如大米,或者计算从勺子中流出的材料流量,以此利用声音进行评估。)”可知,此处是对Oliver Kroemer实验的介绍,结合“The usefulness of sound for robots is therefore not surprising.(因此,声音对机器人的有用性并不令人惊讶。)”
根据最后一段中的“The next step will be making the robots work on vision and hearing at the same time. For example, if the robot sees a cup and hears it, then it ought to be able to lift and move the cup without spilling (使洒出) what is inside.(下一步将是让机器人同时利用视觉和听觉工作。例如,如果机器人看到一个杯子并听到它,那么它就应该能够在不洒出杯内物品的情况下拿起并移动杯子。)”可知,接下来研究人员的研究方向是让机器人同时依靠视觉和听觉来行动。故选A项。

G. Have you ever chosen photos that lead others to the rosiest conclusions about your life?
A 17. D 18. G 19. C 20. E
根据前句“Are you frequently depressed by the feeling that life is leaving you behind particularly when you look over social media sites and are faced with all the exciting things your friends are up to?(你是否经常感到生活离你而去,尤其是当你浏览社交媒体网站时,面对着朋友们正在做的所有令人兴奋的事情?)”及下一段“FOMO, or Fear of Missing Out refers to the perception that other people’s lives are superior to our own. It appears as a deep sense of envy, and constant exposure to it can have a weakening effect on our self-esteem(自尊).(FOMO指的是别人的生活比我们自己的生活更优越的看法。它表现为一种强烈的嫉妒感,持续暴露在这种情绪下会削弱我们的自尊。)”可知,空处为承上启下句,即强烈的嫉妒感是很多人都有的感觉,引出下文对FOMO的介绍。所以选择项A“If so, you are not alone.(如果是这样,你并不孤单。)” 故选A。
根据前句“While feelings of envy and lack of confidence seem to be human nature, social media seems to have added fuel to the fire. (嫉妒和缺乏自信似乎是人类的天性,而社交媒体似乎在火上浇油。)”和后文“Social media, with its built-in appeal, allows us to share only the best presentations of our life, while leaving out the more boring aspects. Although this could be characterized as dishonest, it is the atmosphere social media seems to demand. (社交媒体,以其固有的吸引力,让我们只分享我们生活中最好的一面,而忽略了更无聊的方面。虽然这可以被定性为不诚实,但这似乎是社交媒体所需要的氛围。)”可知,空处提问社交媒体为什么会有火上浇油的刺激作用,以引出下文对其原因的介绍。所以选择项D“Why does it have such a stimulating effect? (为什么它有这样的刺激作用?)”符合上下文语境。故选D。
【18题详解】
根据前句“Consider your own social media posts. (考虑一下你自己的社交媒体帖子。)”和后文“Well, so have others. And what they’ve left hidden is the fact that boredom, loneliness and unpleasant chores are an unavoidable part of everyone’s life, and you’re not the only one feeling left out. (其他人也是如此。而他们所隐藏的事实是,无聊、孤独和不愉快的家务是每个人生活中不可避免的一部分,你不是唯一一个被忽略的人。)”可知,呈现在社交媒体上一般都是经过选择过的,代表生活美好方面的。所以选择项G“Have you ever chosen photos that lead others to the rosiest conclusions about your life? (你有没有选择过一些照片,让别人对你的生活得出最美好的结论?)”符合上下文语境。故选G。
【19题详解】
空处为本段主题句,根据后文“You may not be a regular at fancy parties or a climber of dizzying peaks, but you have your health, a place to live and real friends who appreciate your presence in their lives. (你可能不是高档派对的常客,也不是攀登令人眼花缭乱的高峰的人,但你有健康的身体,有居住的地方,有真正的朋友,他们会欣赏你在他们生活中的存在。)”可知,本段主要介绍要学会欣赏积极的事物。所以选择项C“Learn to appreciate the positives. (学会欣赏积极的事物。)”符合上下文语境。故选C。
【20题详解】
根据前句“We are all flooded daily with photos of other people’s perfections, but really, what does it matter? (我们每天都被别人完美的照片淹没,但说真的,这有什么关系呢?)”可知,我们不能社交媒体上的完美照片的影响,因为它们不一定是真实的。所以选择项E“They are probably no more real than the funniest reality TV show. (它们可能并不比最有趣的电视真人秀更真实。)”符合上下文语境。故选E。

It was Tamika’s turn to tell her class where she went this summer. She stood up proudly. “This summer I went to Bradley,” Tamika announced. “They have a big market there. My mom bought a painting and I got second-hand inline skates. We had a great time there. ”
“That’s not a trip,” Jeremy whispered loudly to his partner. “It’s only half an hour from here. My dad and I often go to Bradley to buy tools for his repair shop.”
“Jeremy, no interrupting,” said Miss Snowdent, their teacher. “And Bradley has a fine market. I’m glad that Tamika can tell us about it. Go ahead, Tamika.” Miss Snowden smiled warmly at her, encouraging her to continue.
But Tamika didn’t feel proud of her family’s trip to Bradley any more and she just felt embarrassed. Tamika dropped her head and said in a low voice that she was finished, and then hurried back to her desk. She hoped that the other kids didn’t notice her face turning red.
Tamika listened as Peter talked about his cruise to Jamaical. She heard about Mary’s trip across the Atlantic to Ireland. She heard about John’s horseback ride through the Grand Canyon. It seemed as if everyone but her had taken a big trip over the summer. “I never get to go anywhere. ” Tamika thought to herself. A sense of sadness clouded her the whole day.
After school things got worse. One of the wheels on Tamika’s skates came loose. Now she couldn’t even skate. Sitting on the sidewalk, Tamika tried to fix her wheel but did not know how. Then Miss Snowden happened to pass by. She walked up with a smile on her face, asking. “You look unhappy, Tamika. Why are you sitting here?” Tamika lowered her head, tears building up inside her eyes. “Want to talk about it?” Miss Snowden asked kindly. Tamika nodded, trying to avoid Miss Snowden’s eyes! Bending down, Miss Snowden said in a whisper: “You know, Tamika, actually we don’t always have to travel far to learn anything.” Tamika looked up with watering eyes and wondered what Miss Snowden meant.

Looking at the tears in Tamika’s eyes and recalling her embarrassment in class, he was overwhelmed with some regret. “I shouldn’t have said that. Tamika must be very sad.” At the thought of this, Jeremy stepped forward and offered his apology to Tamika. Miss Snowden gave Jeremy a thumbs-up and then asked, “One of the wheels on Tamika’s skate came loose. Can you fix it?”
“Yes. I can fix it,” Jeremy said with confidence. Right away, he got down to deal with the wheel, with Tamika standing beside him. While working, he explained how to deal with the loose wheel step by step and Tamika listened carefully. Soon, the wheel was fixed. “Thank you. And I think I’ve learned how to deal with a loose wheel.” Tamika showed her thankfulness. Hearing this, Miss Snowden patted Tamika’s shoulder, “See? We don’t have to travel far to learn anything, Right?” Tamika’s lips curved into a big smile, “Yes, Miss Snowden. You’re right. It’s true that we don’t have to travel far to learn anything.”

4 What can we infer from paragraph 2?
A. Mr. Yu liked travelling in Hong Kong most.

D. At one point, residents of Taiwan were forbidden to go to the Chinese mainland.
