After meeting with King Charles III and officially being named prime minister, Starmer addressed the nation from Downing Street. He promised to fix Britain but warned it could take time. Thursday's election was a particularly heavy repudiation of former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's Conservative Party, which was in power during a tumultuous decade in British politics that included Britain's departure from the European Union, political infighting, scandals and a run of four prime ministers in five years. Starmer has pledged to bring a period of pragmatic calm to British politics. Since the 2019 election, Britain has been bruised by the disruption of Brexit, its divorce from the EU which took effect in early 2020 and further slowed economic growth. A big challenge for Starmer and Labour is they won't have much money to spend to improve public services such as the healthcare system and an aging network of railways.
