We always think that it is OK to leave our plants unattended (无人照料的) during our vacation since we believe that they will survive just fine. After all, plants won’t make noise like pets, so they must be okay. Well, a recent study has found a different answer. A group of scientists from the Tel Aviv University have discovered that some plants scream in a high frequency when they “think” they are in danger.
Scientists did the research on tomato plants by cutting their stems and depriving (剥夺) them of water. A microphone was put 10 cm away from the plants to collect their sound. When the scientists started cutting the stems, the plants began screaming between 20 and 100 kilohertz, which the scientists believe was to warn other plants nearby. When the tomato plants’ stems were cut, 25 ultrasonic sounds were recorded in an hour. When they did not receive enough water, the microphone got even more: 35 times in an hour.
For the first time in history, scientists seem to have evidence that, like animals, plants can make noise in face of difficulty. “People have always believed that plants are silent,” one of the scientists said. “But the truth is that their voices are so high-pitched (高音调的) that we just can’t hear them.”

2.When would plants make noise according to the passage?
3.What did the scientists put near the plants to collect sound?
4.Why did the plants scream according to the scientists?
5.How do you feel after knowing plants can make noise?

Come and save me when you find someone to help us.” “Don’t worry, I’m certain that you will be saved.” Luo said and left.
Three days later, Luo was saved. His first words were, “My workmate was still in danger.” However, when a rescue team arrived at the place, Gan was no longer there. In the next days, they never gave up searching for him.
After hearing of the news about looking for Gan, a local farmer Ni Taigao volunteered to join in the rescue. During the search, he heard Gan’s weak cries for help. He soon saw him lying under the trees. During the past days, Gan depended only on wild fruits and water to survive. The other rescuers arrived, Gan was sent to a nearby hospital.

Yao Jian has been teaching in the Sandun Primary School in Datong, Shanxi Province for more than 20 years. In 1998, he chose to teach village children after graduation. At that time, the conditions of the village school were terrible. Some students had to bring chairs from home to school because there weren’t enough chairs. The number of students became smaller and smaller because many villagers took their children to cities. Some teachers left the school to search for better jobs too. The teachers who stayed there had to teach all the subjects.
“I come from the poor countryside and know how important education is for village children. I will continue teaching in the school till the last student leaves.” Yao said.
Because of his great work, Yao was made the headmaster of the school in 2004. In the same year, his wife started working as a teacher there too. They took good care of the students as if they were their own children. Yao used to have a heart-to-heart talk with other teachers so that they could feel at home in the school and like their work.
Many of the school’s graduates have entered college. Jiao Shufeng, one of them, said, “Yao was my favourite teacher. He helped me form good study habits. I was lucky to have him as my teacher when I was young. Inspired by him, I plan to be a teacher and help more left-behind children to get better education.”

1.What did scientists do the research on?
2.When would plants make noise according to the passage?
3.What did the scientists put near the plants to collect sound?
4.Why did the plants scream according to the scientists?
5.How do you feel after knowing plants can make noise?
