Do you know about subways? They are trains that run under the ground in big cities. The idea of a subway system was first brought to life in London. The London Underground is the oldest underground railway system in the world. It began its historic run in 1863 with the Metropolitan Line. The trains ran between Paddington and Farringdon, a distance (距离) of just 6.5 kilometres.
After that, more cities wanted these underground trains. Boston in the United States got its own subway in 1897, making it the first in North America. Soon cities like New York, Paris, and Moscow developed their subway systems.
Now, subways are found in many cities around the world. Some of the biggest subway systems are in Tokyo, New York, London, and Beijing.
Subways are known for their speed and how often they come. In some cities, a train arrives every few minutes. Besides, subways are designed with safety in mind. They have automatic systems that can stop the trains if something goes wrong. Plus, there are always people around to help if you need it.
Subways help reduce traffic on the streets. They carry lots of people in one trip, which means fewer cars on the road. This is good for the environment because it leads to less pollution. Modern subways are powered by electricity, not steam or diesel. This makes them quieter and cleaner.
