Text 10
M:We all know that exercise has many benefits.Mostly,we can tell by how much better we feel after exercise. And if we are overweight, exercising more usually helps with weight loss.Scientific research also supports this general understanding about exercise. Many studies are done on how different sports affect the human body. One recent study was done by the scientists of the American Cancer Society and Harvard University. It received information from people with 15 different types of cancer.Researchers found that there was lower risk for 7 of these 15 cancer types when people exercised. Also, the more they exercised, the lower their risk became. For example, men who exercised 7.5 hours a week had an 8% less chance of getting colon cancer(结肠癌).And men who exercised 15 hours a week had a 14% lower risk. These results are not just numbers.Adults should get physical activity at recommended levels to lower the risk of cancer.Actually, scientists suggest that most adults can get enough exercise by walking 30 minutes a day at a rate of 3 miles per hour.

The Best National Parks to Visit in Winter
While most parks tend to draw families in the summer and fall, there are also ideal spots for adventurous winter trips.
Yellowstone National Park,Wyoming
The country’s oldest and best-known national park takes on an almost otherworldly atmosphere in winter:the air filled with rolling steam, the strong colors of hot springs, the surrounding white landscapes, let alone the impressive wildlife during this time, like bison, wolves, and playful red foxes.Just book a guided hiking tour to get a ranger’s perspective on the park and local people.
Joshua Tree National Park,California
With its giant red rocks and unique trees, you’ll feel like stepping onto a foreign planet as you spend hours hiking the Panorama Loop or Maze Loop. The park is recognized as an International Dark Sky Park, featuring virtually zero light pollution and the country’s best views of a starry sky.
Grand Canyon National Park,Arizona
A significantly lower number of visitors in winter mean you can take in unblocked views of the South Rim,and get to see the rare beauty of the Grand Canyon dusted with snow. For those adventurous and daring,it is recommended to hike the Bright Angel Trail and take the chance to see the canyon’s wintertime wildlife, including mule deer, elk, and bald eagles.
Virgin Islands National Park,St.John
Surprise! Not all wintertime national park trips need to involve snow.Virgin Islands National Park is most famous for its white-sand beaches. You can also hike inland to visit old sugar plantations,or venture out to the water to swim along with sea turtles and manta rays. You will definitely enjoy a different winter here.

Along the coastline in northeastern Australia, many flying foxes are infected with a deadly disease. That’s where Pam Tully comes in.
Many mother flying foxes fall from the trees and die.Pam walks miles in the rainforest, collecting babies still clinging(紧抱) to their dying mothers. It’s very tiring work.Pam relies on a few volunteers to help rescue the flying foxes during the migration season.Usually, they are college students who come Down Under for a semester of life in the rainforest.Canace came from America to lend a hand to her aunt Pam,and to look for some kind of purpose in life after her mother passed away.
Losing your mother is never easy, but for a teenage girl, the loss at a time of emotional need and guidance is particularly affecting.Going off to live in wilderness half a world away seemed a good thing to do.Pam accepted her with open arms and invited Canace to stay as long as she wanted. After all,she did need the help.So Pam taught Canace to feed the baby flying foxes, keep them wrapped in nappies, nurse them back to health and take them back into the wilderness to rejoin their families.
Day after day,Pam led Canace through the rainforest, collecting babies and bringing them back to the shed where they were treated by an animal doctor, fed every two hours by bottle and even taught to fly. Each flying fox released back into the wild was a victory. And each time one winged away, the loss Canace felt seemed just a little bit less.
We never really get over the loss of a love done, but when we take care of a weak creature,or reach out to somebody else who is hurting, the wound heals just a little bit,and the hurt becomes a memory of being loved.

The low percentage of women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics(STEM) careers is often attributed(归因于) to men being believed to be better at the sort of thinking those fields require.Though studies have debunked the view, they have largely been based on results acquired from various several standardized tests. Now,researchers from Pennsylvania’s Carnegie Mellon University have found evidence that is hard to overlook:MRI(磁共振成像) proves that young girls and boys use the same mechanisms and networks in the brain to solve math problems.
The groundbreaking study to evaluate the biological gender differences in the math talent of young children was led by the university’s professor of neuroscience,Jessica Cantlon. For their study, the team selected 104 young children, between 3 and 10 years old, divided almost equally by gender. The scientists used a functional MRI to observe their brain activity as they engaged in math tasks. These included watching age-appropriate educational videos and doing math exercises such as counting and addition,as well as reading for comparison.
“We looked at which areas of the brain respond more strongly to mathematics content in the videos and tasks, compared to non-math content like reading or the alphabet,” Cantlon said.“When we do that in girls,we see a particular network of the brain respond, and when we do that same analysis in boys,we see the exact same regions.”
So why do girls and young women tend to avoid math and STEM careers in general? Cantlon thinks it may be rooted in social and cultural conventions.Previous studies have indicated that parents tend to spend more time with young boys in play that inspires spatial cognition(空间认知) such as toys that involve learning number skills and shapes and solving puzzles.Educators were also observed to spend more time with boys during math class.

Electric cars are supposed to help the world go green and stop hurting the planet.Engineers at Brown University and the University of Maryland are taking that goal to another level, with a new idea for batteries made from trees, according to new findings published in Nature.
Lithium-ion batteries(锂电池) have become the new form of rechargeable batteries thanks to their extraordinarily long charge. You’re probably reading this story from a device powered by such a battery. Most electric cars like ones made by Tesla use lithium-ion batteries.
These batteries use a liquid solution that conducts lithium ions from the battery’s cathode and anode(阴极和阳极),but the liquid is not what helps ensure electrical power goes from the battery to the device it’s powering. The problem is that this liquid is made of harmful materials that are sometimes unstable. They sometimes have explosive results.A solid conducting structure would prevent this from happening, but it could be likely to crack and break, making the battery useless.
An ideal material for solid state lithium-ion batteries would be thin and flexible to resist structural stresses, and it is wood from a tree. The team in charge of the new research developed a mixed material made of copper(铜) and fibers coming from wood. They tested it out as a model for conducting ions back and forth in a lithium-ion battery, and found it works 10 to 100 times better than other solid-state conductors—a record high.
The new findings are just based on basic model tests, and a rechargeable battery made of trees is still quite a way off.But if it passes test as a practical form of energy,it can very well replace current rechargeable batteries. It is not hard to imagine electric cars having better sales for their real green, but saying that their batteries are just made from trees is beyond our imagination.
32.How are engineers making electric cars greener according to the text?
A.By improving the materials of batteries.
B.By reducing lithium ions in the batteries.
C.By using liquid to conduct electric power.
D.By producing more lithium-ion batteries.

33.What is the advantage of lithium-ion batteries?
A.They contain eco-friendly liquid.
B.They offer electrical power stably.
C.Their charge lasts for a long time.
D.They are safe and unlikely to explode.
34.Why is wood chosen as the solid-state conductor?
A.It is resistant to structural pressures.
B.It is much thicker and less changeable.
C.Its copper and fibers conduct ions well.
D.It proves to be a practical form of energy.
答案 A
35.What can we infer about batteries made of trees from the last paragraph?

Think back to the last time you shopped for fruits and vegetables. You may have noticed some items labelled with the word “organic”. 36
“Organic” refers to the way food is grown. To be labelled as organic, food production must meet strict guidelines. These can be different depending on where you live.In the United States, organic food must be grown or raised without using pesticides or chemical fertilizers.
37 That changed after the Industrial Revolution.During the 20th century, many ideas that were used by factories and big businesses were put into action on farms. This helped some farms grow larger and produce more.
The organic movement was started to get back to the old traditional ways of farming. Why? Many believe the chemicals and pesticides used in modern farming can be harmful to your health. 38 And those who support the organic movement also point to its benefits for the environment.
Have you ever compared organic and non-organic foods at the grocery store? If so,you know that organic food tends to cost more. This happens for many reasons.Organic farming produces fewer crops. 39 Additionally, organic farms spend more money taking care of the animals they raise. These and other factors drive the cost of organic food up.
Is organic food worth the extra cost? Some people believe it is.They may think it tastes better or just prefer to eat food that has not been grown using chemicals. 40 They are still trying to find a major difference between organic and non-organic foods in terms of safety, nutrition,or taste.Still, others argue that the environmental benefits of organic food make it worth the price.
A.Have you ever wondered what that means?
B.The cost of production is also usually higher.
C.For most of history, almost all food was organic.
D.Are you wondering if organic food is right for you?
E.Many people are willing to pay more for organic food.
F.Some also think organic food is naturally more nutritious.
G.Scientists have studied organic and non-organic foods for many years now.
36.答案 A
故选A。

I took part in the Man vs Wild activity this summer vacation.
During the activity,I was in a group with a boy from New Zealand. It went all right at the beginning. However,on the third day,we got lost in the mountains and couldn’t find our way back to the camp. What was worse,we ran out of food.We had our mobile phones but there was no signal. To save ourselves,we created a large SOS using tree branches and were finally rescued by helicopter.
It was a valuable experience, from which I benefited a lot.
I was in my room, unwilling to head to the community theatre with “my brother” Henry. He was just adopted by my parents recently.I was not in the mood for being onstage with him.
“Kristie, come here,” my mom called.Following her voice,I found her outside the bathroom, holding a wet book. She gave the book a shake.“Henry’s book was in the bathtub.Did you put it there?” She glared at me—something she never did before Henry came to our home.I didn’t wet his book on purpose.Tears of hurt clouded my eyes.Worse still, she promised to buy him a new copy.My heart ached.Henry was stealing my mother’s love.He was ruining my life.
Meanwhile,Henry was just nearby, absorbed in working on a complicated rope knot(绳结) as usual. Why did a boy like him do the girly work? Far from manly!
Soon,it was time to have to set off for the community theatre. As Henry walked ahead of us to the car,my mom took me aside and said in a low voice,“It’s the first time for Henry to be onstage.Be kind to him,Honey.” I nodded but sighed.Being kind didn’t use to be hard. But after Henry moved in,everything felt different. The theatre used to be a special place for my parents and me.With Henry involved,it didn’t seem so special any more.
Finally,it was our stage time.My heart beat wildly.I forgot my annoyance at Henry for a while. As we kids lined up,ready to act out our short play,I realized how loosely I had tied the drawstring(束带) on my skirt.Sure enough,my skirt began to drop.Laughter from the audience could be heard, and even though I was wearing shorts under my skirt,I could feel my face burst into flames. However,my hands were full.If only someone could help me out!
Right then,Henry sensed my embarrassment.
After the performance,I found Henry and tapped him on the arm gratefully.
Right then,Henry sensed my embarrassment. He immediately came to my aid.He pulled up my skirt and skillfully tied the drawstring with a beautiful knot. When I saw what Henry did for me,something deep in my mind began to change. It seemed as if my cold heart began to melt slowly and my annoyance at him gradually gave way to guilt.I regretted having treated him as a stranger. While my mind was wandering, our performance time came.It turned out a great success, thunderous applause filling the whole theatre.
After the performance,I found Henry and tapped him on the arm gratefully.“Thanks,” I said with a grateful smile on my face.I had to admit that but for his timely help,I would have been extremely embarrassed.Without his knotting skill, the performance would have been quite different.“KNOT a problem. You are my sister,” he grinned innocently, saying humorously.Surrounded by the cheerful atmosphere,I felt a flood of warmth of a big family.Maybe it wouldn’t be so bad to have a new person in my corner of the world after all.
