We’d just downsized our home. As grateful as I was to have a roof over our heads, I couldn’t help but feel blue. Our old house was beautiful and huge. Our current home? Half the size and crowded. We’d had to give away or throw away a lot of our stuff. But there were still boxes everywhere, from the family room to the garage (车库).
The day after the move, while the kids were in school, I tackled more boxes. By the afternoon, I’d made real progress. The furniture was unpacked. The photos were hanging on the walls. But it just didn’t feel like home.
Maybe I could change that. I checked the kitchen cupboard and saw that I had enough ingredients to bake chocolate chip cookies. Just like my grandma used to make whenever I needed cheering up. Wouldn’t that be a nice surprise for the kids? When they got home from school, there’d be fresh cookies waiting for them on the kitchen counter.
I put on my apron (围裙), measured out the brown sugar and butter and got to work. One by one, I added eggs to the mixer (搅拌机).
POP!
What in the world? The mixer stopped working. My mixer was broken. “Really?!” I felt like screaming. It was just a kitchen device, but it felt like the last straw. What more did I have to give up?
What would my grandma do? She’d lived through the Great Depression and had lost everything. Even in the face of hardship, she’d kept her family together. She used whatever she had to get by. Grandma wouldn’t quit. She’d find another way. Inspired, I ran to the garage and searched the remaining boxes. Found it!
I pulled out Grandma’s old white mixer. The one she’d passed on to me. She’d purchased it back in the 50’s and it was ancient. I’d marked the box it was in as “easily broken”, but the movers hadn’t paid attention. They’d dropped it anyway.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;

I wondered if it still worked.

Two hours later, the kids opened the door and said, “Mmmm, cookies!”
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
I wondered if it still worked. With a mixture of hope and doubt, I plugged it in and turned it on. To my surprise, the old mixer hummed to life, blending the ingredients with a satisfying rhythm. It wasn’t as powerful as my modern one, but it was doing its job. As I continued mixing, I thought about how she had always been able to find joy in the simplest things. This old mixer was a symbol of her resilience and determination. I was determined to make the best cookies possible with it, just like she had done for me so many times before.
Two hours later, the kids opened the door and said, “Mmmm, cookies!” Their faces lit up with surprise and delight as they saw the plate of freshly baked chocolate chip cookies on the kitchen counter. They each took a cookie, bit into it, and sighed with happiness. I watched them, feeling a deep sense of satisfaction. The cookies had done their magic, bringing a touch of warmth and love to our smaller space. And as I looked at Grandma’s old mixer, I realized that sometimes, the things we think are broken can still bring us the greatest joy.

It was a sunny afternoon in the park. The grass was green, and the flowers were in full bloom. Children were playing, and people were walking their dogs. Among them was a little girl named Emma. She was skipping along the path, enjoying the beautiful day.
Suddenly, she heard a faint meowing sound. She stopped and listened carefully. The meowing seemed to be coming from a nearby bush. Emma walked over to the bush and had a quick glimpse of inside. There, she saw a tiny, frightened kitten. The kitten was all alone, and its fur was dirty and matted (乱蓬蓬的).
Emma felt so sorry for the kitten. She slowly reached out her hand, trying to coax (哄劝) it to come to her. The kitten was hesitant at first but then sniffed her fingers and allowed her to pick it up. Emma cuddled the kitten in her arms, trying to warm it up. She looked around, hoping to find the kitten’s owner, but there was no one in sight.
Emma decided to take the kitten home. She knew her parents might not be too happy about it, but she couldn’t just leave the poor thing. When she got home, her parents were surprised to see the kitten. Emma explained what had happened and begged them to let her keep it. Her parents looked at each other and finally agreed, but only if she took good care of it.
Emma was overjoyed. She gave the kitten a bath, carefully washing away the dirt. The kitten meowed softly as she dried it with a towel. She then made a cozy bed for it in a box and gave it some food and water. The kitten ate hungrily, as if it hadn’t eaten in days.
Over the next few days, Emma spent all her free time with the kitten. She named it Whiskers. She played with it, taught it to use the litter box, and took it to the vet to make sure it was healthy. Whiskers grew stronger and more playful.
One day, Emma took Whiskers to the park where she had found it. She wanted to show it the place where their adventure began. While they were playing, a woman approached them. She looked at Whiskers and gasped (倒吸气).
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;

Emma thought about the woman’s proposal for a moment and then nodded.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
The woman screamed, “That’s my kitten! I’ve been looking everywhere for it!” The woman exclaimed, “That’s my kitten! I’ve searched everywhere!” Emma, stunned, clung to Whiskers, explaining, “I found it alone in the bush, scared and hungry.” The woman clarified Whiskers had escaped days prior. Doubting her, Emma scrutinized the woman until she showed photos on her phone. Realizing Whiskers belonged to her; Emma was saddened but agreed to the woman’s proposal: Emma could visit and receive updates.
Emma thought about the woman’s proposal for a moment and then nodded. She gently handed Whiskers to the woman. The woman thanked her again and again and gave Emma a big hug. As the woman walked away with Whiskers, Emma felt tears rolling down her cheek. But she also felt a sense of happiness because Whiskers was going back to its rightful owner. From that day on, Emma visited Whiskers regularly. The woman usually sent Emma pictures and videos of Whiskers. Emma also made a scrapbook filled with all the memories of her time with Whiskers.
