John James Audubon was an American bird expert and wildlife painter. He was born in 1785 in Saint-Domingue in the Caribbean. He was brought up in France, but at the age of 18, his father sent him to live in the US.
Audubon had always had a fascination for wildlife and, especially, birdlife. He spent much of his time outdoors, studying and drawing nature. One of the things he had been wondering about was whether the same birds returned each year to his farm after disappearing for the winter months. One day, while he was drawing, he had an idea to test his thought. He caught a few birds and tied some cotton around their legs. The next year when he saw a bird with the cotton around the leg return, he knew his ideas were correct. He was one of the first people to start to understand bird migration(迁徙)and make bird watching popular.
As well as his important studies into bird life, Audubon was an amazing artist. He wrote The Birds of America in the US. It is considered to be one of the best bird books ever since. These days it’s also one of the most expensive: an early copy was recently sold for $7 million. For many of the things we buy, we know what’s green and what’s not. For example, we know paper products are greener than cars. That knowledge helps us make eco-friendly (环保的) choices. Our goal at Eco Stitch is to help you buy eco-friendly clothes.
Unless you’ re wearing that wool (羊毛) sweater your grandmother made, you might not know what your clothes are made of. The names of the materials are written on the labels (标签), but have you ever looked at them? Most people are only interested in how beautiful the clothes are. They don’t care whether their clothes are made of cotton or polyester (聚酯纤维).
Even if you know what materials you’re wearing, do you know how eco-friendly they are? Do you know how they were made? How much material is needed? Cotton is taken from natural plants. Many people think it is more environmentally friendly than polyester. Because polyester is man-made. However, a lot of chemicals are used by most cotton farmers. And a lot of water is needed, too. Also, polyester is often made from used plastic bottles. It’s also warmer and lighter than cotton, and less material is needed!
We’re here to help you make the best choices for you.

I was scared of flying. Not just a little. Whenever I got on a plane, I was scared to death. I couldn’t move forward. I’ve cried on planes. As an adult. More than once. The fear wasn’t reasonable, but it was not something I was in control of either. I read about a virtual reality (VR) therapy (虚拟现实疗法) that had helped people like me, so I decided to try it.
STEP 1: GETA REAL DOCTOR
If you want to try this therapy, you’ll need a doctor. That part is real, not virtual! During my sessions (治疗期), however, we spent a lot of time in the virtual world. And even then, the doctor was always in control of the software.
STEP 2: PANIC (恐慌)
The first time I put on a VR headset, I was surprised by my body’s reaction(反应). When you’re in a VR environment, your mind can’t tell what’s real or not real. Just in a few minutes, I was in great panic. My heart beat really fast. And it was difficult for me to breathe. The doctor taught me how to be in control of myself again by using a breathing skill.
STEP 3: REPEAT
At my first session, my fear level was especially high. There was still a lot of fear the second time, but I felt much better than before. With careful breathing, I calmed down. By my third session, I felt almost relaxed.
STEP 4: FLY
Engine noise rising, speed increasing, ground disappearing– and all without the usual fear. I still felt nervous—a real plane is without doubt stronger than a VR plane, but I truly had got over my fear. The VR therapy had worked! I may even take flying lessons if the therapy continues to work so well.
27. What does the underlined “it” in Paragraph l refer to?
A. A plane. B. An adult.

A. Doubtful. B. Supportive.
C. Unclear. D. Worried.
30. Why does the writer write this text?
A. To tell us why she is scared of flying.
B. To discuss how to be in control of oneself.
C. To encourage people to take a plane.
D. To show us her experience of the VR therapy.

He also found 25 new kinds of birds and is regarded as a true hero of early American birdlife protection.

A. Doubtful. B. Supportive.
C. Unclear. D. Worried.
30. Why does the writer write this text?
A. To tell us why she is scared of flying.
B. To discuss how to be in control of oneself.
C. To encourage people to take a plane.
D. To show us her experience of the VR therapy.
