A year ago, I started my journey to the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC), full of dreams and hopes. I was grateful to my father for he always supported me, his only son, on my art journey. I was excited about the new life ahead and started packing my bags weeks before leaving.
However, when I actually began this journey, everything was different from what I expected. The first few weeks were the hardest time of my life. Every night, I found it hard to sleep because I missed home so much. I didn’t know how to deal with these heavy feelings. Then I found some ways to solve my emotional problems. I joined many campus activities and looked for internship opportunities. In my free time, I tried new hobbies like photography and music. I tried to keep myself busy and make each day interesting so that I wouldn’t think about how lonely I felt.
Soon, I started to feel very stressed and even had trouble sleeping. Finally, I decided to get help from a counselor (顾问). With his help, I realized that I needed to find a healthy way to deal with my emotions instead of avoiding them. I started learning meditation and breathing exercises, which helped me relax and focus again. I understood that I needed to find a balance between my studies and my emotional needs.
How could I find this balance? I told myself that I had the ability to overcome these problems. I decided to be more active in social activities while staying focused on my studies. My first semester at college finally ended, and I not only achieved excellent academic results but also made many new friends. This is why I want to share my story-I hope to help other students realize that they are not alone when facing challenges and that it is always possible to find ways to overcome difficulties.

Scientists on a National Geographic research trip to the Solomon Islands have discovered the world’s largest coral (珊瑚). The single coral colony (群), made up of around one billion tiny animals, is so large that it can be seen from space.
Though underwater corals may look like rocks, they are actually made out of millions of tiny animals called coral polyps (珊瑚虫). Together, the polyps form a colony. A coral reef (礁) is normally built out of lots of colonies of different kinds. But in this case, scientists discovered a giant structure built entirely out of one species of coral. All of the coral polyps in this colony are the same kind. And the researchers believe this colony includes about one billion coral polyps.
The coral colony is 34 meters wide and 32 meters long, and about 5.5 meters high. It is believed to be between 300 and 500 years old. The coral colony is mostly brown, but it also has yellow, blue, and red spots. The coral colony is home to many kinds of sea life, including shrimp, crabs, and different kinds of fish. The newly discovered coral colony sits in water that’s around 10 meters deep, and seems to be doing well — even when many other corals aren’t.
In recent years, coral reefs around the world have been damaged by rising ocean temperatures caused by global warming. This is often called coral bleaching because huge areas of corals can turn white as they die. As of 2023, around 75% of the world’s coral reefs have been affected by coral bleaching.
Since this giant coral colony is doing well, that may mean that it can survive in warmer temperatures. Clearly, it had to be strong to remain alive for hundreds of years. As one scientist said, “Anything old is really good at surviving.” That could be good news: It might mean that the colony will be able to produce new corals that can survive in warmer waters.
28. What is special about the newly discovered coral colony?
A. It is found around the islands.
B. It has many sea animals on it.
C. It is made up of the same kind of coral.
D. It includes colonies of various types of coral.
29. What is paragraph 3 mainly about the newly discovered coral colony?
A. Its basic facts. B. Its poor situation.
C. Its history of growth. D. Its living environment.
30. Which word can best describe the situation of the corals in the ocean now?
A. Uncertain. B. Pleasing. C. Lively. D. Worrying.
31. Why is this new discovery important?
A. It gives us hope for the survival of coral.
B. It proves to be a totally new type of coral.
C. It shows ancient animals are good at surviving.
D. It helps us find ways to control ocean warming.
D
Did you know that even if you exercise regularly, you might still be what researchers call an “active couch potato”? Think about this: If you exercise once a day for 30 to 45 minutes, you could still spend 80% to 90% of your waking hours sitting. A study in England showed that while over 55% of adults met the recommended physical activity guide lines, they still sat for about 10 hours a day.
Spending too many hours inactive each day, including watching TV (a classic couch potato activity), can increase the risk of fitness and more than 30 other chronic (慢性的) illnesses. Inactivity has also been found to raise chances of heart disease. This imbalance can cancel out many of the positive effects of exercising, such as controlling blood sugar and improving blood flow (流动) to the legs and brain. Just four to six hours of inactivity can cause a drop in an enzyme (酶) that helps the body use fat for energy.
Researchers from New Zeal and compared people who sat for 18 hours without exercising with “active couch potatoes” who exercised for 30 minutes between two nine-hour periods of inactivity. They also compared these groups with a third group who did light exercise for just two minutes every half an hour. The sedentary and “active couch potato” groups had higher blood sugar levels, while the light exercise group had better blood sugar control.
The results of these studies point to the same conclusion: No matter how active you are, it’s important to be less of a couch potato — or a more active one. So, if your New Year’s resolution is to start a new exercise plan, remember to take breaks to avoid sitting too long by walking for a few minutes throughout the day too.
32. What does the term “active couch potato” suggest about regular exercise?
A. Regular exercise should be avoided.
B. Long regular exercise is unnecessary.
C. Regular exercise isn’t always good for health.
D. Daily one-time short exercise isn’t enough for good health.
33. What do we know about being inactive for too many hours each day?
A. It can reduce chances of heart disease.
B. It can quicken blood flow to the legs and brain.
C. It can be good for enzyme activity for fat usage.
D. It can increase the risk of fitness and chronic illnesses.
34. What do the underlined words “The sedentary” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. People who are inactive for a long time.
B. People training others to do proper exercise.
C. People who like doing exercise during work.
D. People doing exercise more than 3 hours a day.
35. What is the text?
A. A paper on working too long. B. A personal diary.
C. An article on health. D. A news report on chronic illnesses.

One evening, while working at the convenience store in my neighborhood, I noticed a young girl, about 8 years old, who looked very tired, carrying several bags. Concerned about her well-being, I approached her and asked if she needed any help. She told me that she was waiting for a friend and felt a bit lost in the area.
Seeing her young face and the tiredness in her eyes, I decided to buy her some food and water. I invited her to stay inside the store until her friend arrived, ensuring that it was safer inside. She agreed and seemed glad to have a place to rest.
As we chatted, she mentioned that she was planning to meet up with her neighbour, one of her best friends. They were planning a little adventure around town. I could see that she was excited but also a bit nervous about the plan.
Wanting to ensure her safety, I softly asked if she had told her parents about her whereabouts(行踪). She admitted that she hadn’t. I explained to her how important it was to let her parents know where she was, so they wouldn’t worry about her.
“Do you think I should call them now?” she asked, looking uncertain.
“Yes, I think that’s a good idea,” I replied. “They’ll be relieved to know you’re safe.”
“But I can’t remember their telephone numbers,” she said helplessly.
I decided to call a policeman I knew well who often patrolled (巡逻) our area. The policeman arrived quickly and dealt with the situation with great care. He spoke kindly to the girl, asking her about her plans and her friend. He told her the importance of staying safe and keeping her parents informed.
Some minutes later, the girl’s neighbour, an older girl, arrived. The policeman spoke to them about the possible dangers of wandering (闲逛) around town. He encouraged them to call their parents and let them know they were safe. Luckily, the older girl remembered her mother’s telephone number well. The policeman soon got in touch with her mother.

【答案】28. C 29. A 30. D 31. A

【29题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第三段“The coral colony is 34 meters wide and 32 meters long, and about 5.5 meters high. It is believed to be between 300 and 500 years old. The coral colony is mostly brown, but it also has yellow, blue, and red spots. The coral colony is home to many kinds of sea life, including shrimp, crabs, and different kinds of fish. 【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“In recent years, coral reefs around the world have been damaged by rising ocean temperatures caused by global warming. This is often called coral bleaching because huge areas of corals can turn white as they die. As of 2023, around 75% of the world’s coral reefs have been affected by coral bleaching.(近年来,全球变暖导致海洋温度上升,世界各地的珊瑚礁遭到破坏。这通常被称为珊瑚白化,因为大面积的珊瑚在死亡时会变白。截至2023年,全球约75%的珊瑚礁受到珊瑚白化的影响。)”可推知,现在海洋中珊瑚的状况令人担忧,故选D。
【31题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Since this giant coral colony is doing well, that may mean that it can survive in warmer temperatures. Clearly, it had to be strong to remain alive for hundreds of years. As one scientist said, “Anything old is really good at surviving.” That could be good news: It might mean that the colony will be able to produce new corals that can survive in warmer waters.(由于这个巨大的珊瑚群落状况良好,这可能意味着它可以在较温暖的温度下生存。显然,它必须坚固才能存活数百年。正如一位科学家所说:“任何古老的东西都非常善于生存。”这可能是个好消息:这可能意味着该珊瑚群将能够产生能够在温暖水域中生存的新珊瑚。)”可推知,这个新发现的珊瑚群很重要是因为它给了我们珊瑚生存的希望。故选A。
【答案】32. D 33. D 34. A 35. C

67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I decided to call a policeman I knew well, who often patrolled (巡逻) our area.

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】参考范文:
The policeman and I together waited for the older girl’s mother to arrive. Soon, the older girl’s mother reached the store. She was very grateful for our help and thanked us for keeping her child and the girl next door safe. “I can’t thank you both enough for your kindness,” she said warmly. The mother insisted on inviting us to dinner as a gesture of her appreciation. During the meal, the atmosphere was filled with a mix of relief and joy. The girls apologized for leaving homes without telling their parents, promising never to do it again.
After the meal, the older girl’s mother paid for it. The girls were brought home by the mother, who was happy to have them back safe and sound. As they left, they waved at me with a smile, and I felt fulfilled. The experience taught the girls the importance of communication and safety, and it brought a sense of relief and happiness to everyone involved. This incident has reminded me that even a small action can make a big difference to others’ lives. By simply showing concern and taking the right steps, we are able to prevent a potentially worrying situation.
