Throughout all the events in my life, one in particular sticks out more than the others. As I reflect on this significant event, a smile spreads across my face. As I think of Shanda, I feel loved and grateful.
It was my twelfth year of dancing. I thought it would end up like any other year: stuck in emptiness, forgotten and without the belief of any teacher or friend that I really had the potential to achieve greatness.
However, I met Shanda, a young, talented choreographer (编舞者). She influenced me to work to the best of my ability, pushed me to keep going when I wanted to give up, encouraged me and showed me the real importance of dancing. Throughout our hard work, not only did my ability to dance grow, but my friendship with Shanda grew as well.
With the end of the year came our show time. As I walked to a backstage filled with other dancers, I hoped for a good performance that would prove my improvement. I waited anxiously for my turn. Finally, after what seemed like days, the loudspeaker announced my name. Butterflies filled my stomach as I took trembling steps onto the big lighted stage. But, with the determination to succeed and eagerness to live up to Shanda’s expectations for me, I began to dance. All my troubles and nerves went away as I danced my whole heart out.
As I walked up to the judge to receive my first place shining, gold trophy(奖杯), I realized that dance is not about becoming the best. It was about loving dance for dance itself, a getaway from all my problems in the world. Shanda showed me that I could let everything go and just dance what I feel at that moment. After all the doubts that people had in me, I believed in myself and did not care what others thought. Thanks to Shanda, dance became more than a love of mine, but a passion.

A.By offering her financial help. B.By entering her in a competition.
C.By coaching her for longer hours. D.By awakening her passion for dancing.
26.How did the author feel when she stepped on the stage?
A.Proud. B.Nervous. C.Scared. D.Relieved.
27.What can we learn from the author’s story?
A.Success lies in patience. B.Fame is a great thirst of the young.
C.A good teacher matters. D.A youth is to be treated with respect.

Recent studies in nutritional science emphasize that when we eat may be just as important as what we eat, particularly regarding our first meal of the day. The longstanding debate about breakfast timing has gained new scientific backing from research conducted at the University of California, San Francisco, published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism in January 2024.
The UCSF study defined “early breakfast” as eating within two hours of waking, and “late breakfast” as eating more than four hours after waking. Researchers tracked metabolic(代谢的) markers in two groups of participants over a 12-week period. The findings revealed significant differences in how the body processed nutrients based on breakfast timing.
Early breakfast eaters demonstrated improved insulin sensitivity, better blood sugar regulation throughout the day, and reduced inflammation markers. They also reported feeling more energetic and experiencing weaker urge for food. Late breakfast eaters, conversely, showed higher levels of cortisol in the morning, more difficulty regulating appetite, and a tendency to consume more calories later in the day, particularly in the evening.
Dr. Sarah Mitchell, a nutritionist based in Chicago, emphasizes that while the findings are compelling, breakfast timing must be adapted to individual circumstances. Shift workers, people with medical conditions, and those with irregular schedules need to find patterns that work for their specific situations rather than following rigid guidelines.
Dr. Mitchell offers practical advice for those whose routines don’t accommodate an early breakfast. She recommends having a light snack soon after waking, followed by a proper breakfast later, rather than skipping breakfast entirely. This approach helps stabilize blood sugar and prevents overeating later. Additionally, paying attention to the composition of breakfast — prioritizing protein and fiber over simple carbohydrates — can significantly improve the metabolic response.
The message is clear: the breakfast debate extends beyond nutrients to include timing. Healthy eating isn’t merely about counting calories but also about matching our food intake with our body’s natural rhythms.
28.What did the UCSF study primarily investigate?
A.The nutritional value of different breakfast foods.
B.The relationship between breakfast and weight loss.
C.The health risks of skipping breakfast.
D.The effect of breakfast timing on metabolism.
29. What does the underlined word “conversely” in paragraph 3 most probably mean?
A.Therefore B. Besides C.In contrast D.Meanwhile
30.What advice does Dr. Mitchell give to late breakfast eaters?
A.Skip breakfast to reduce calorie intake. B.Eat a small snack soon after waking.
C.Consume only protein for breakfast. D.Have breakfast exactly two hours after waking.
31.What is the best title for this passage?
A.How Breakfast Timing Affects Your Health.
B.Breakfast: The Most Important Meal of the Day.
C.The Role of Nutrition in Modern Life.
D.Why You Should Never Skip Breakfast.

For years, Jennifer Uchendu had been warning fellow Nigerians about the upcoming dangers of climate change without realizing that a related issue had escaped her attention: she felt increasingly anxious and overwhelmed.
Residents of the global South experience some of the most dramatic effects of climate change, often without contributing significantly to the problem themselves. For Uchendu, who acts as a sustainability consultant in local communities and has launched a blog to help young people reduce their carbon footprint and encourage more accountability among others, it felt like she couldn’t make a difference fast enough.
Then, in 2020, Uchendu saw that UK activists had established climate cafés, where they processed their anger and grief over the warming planet and renewed their resolve. So, she founded the Eco-Anxiety in Africa Project, or TEAP, to help young Africans meet and talk about the emotions they are feeling around climate change.
TEAP’s leaders want to inspire a sense of empowerment among the more than 700 people who have joined the project. Whether the goal is to plant more trees or lower an electricity bill, conversations at TEAP often explore real hardships. “In Nigeria, even though we’ve come together because of climate change, it’s not out of place when someone talks about unemployment or the high prices of food, because we see that these are the broader impacts of the problem,” Uchendu says. “Having something personally related means we can feel comfortable expressing ourselves.”
She has expanded TEAP to several more states in Nigeria and plans to train organizers to create similar spaces in South Africa. Meanwhile, she’s conducting research with the University of Nottingham about the emotional impact of climate change on urban residents in large African cities.
As Uchendu sees it, providing a platform for young Africans to talk about their eco-anxiety is an essential step in continuing the fight for a better future. “If young people feel completely powerless, it’s not just a public health crisis but a disaster for climate change,” she says. “You have to have the energy to do something.” That’s another valuable resource to protect.
32.What was an inner drive for Uchendu to start TEAP?
A.Inspiration from British activists.
B.Emotional burden from climate issues.
C.Frustration with people’s lack of responsibility.
D.Self-expectation as a sustainability consultant.
33.What can we know about TEAP?
A.It has been expanded worldwide. B.It provides solutions for environmental issues.
C.It creates climate conversation spaces. D.It fosters a sense of empowerment globally.
34.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.Eco-anxiety led to climate crises.
B.Public health crisis results from people’s powerlessness.
C.Health crises equal climate disasters.
D.Young people’s eco-anxiety needs protection.
35.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.The Role of TEAP: Fighting African Climate Change.
B.A Global Crisis: Climate Change and Mental Health.
C.Talking It Out: Addressing Eco-Anxiety in Africa.
D.Jennifer Uchendu: A Responsible African Environmentalist.

A Brother’s Hands
Back in the fifteenth century, in a tiny village near Nuremberg lived a family with eighteen children. Eighteen! In order merely to keep food on the table for this big family, the father, head of the household, a goldsmith by profession, worked almost eighteen hours a day. Despite their seemingly hopeless condition, two of the children had a dream. They both wanted to pursue their talent for art, but they knew that their father would never be financially able to send either of them to Nuremberg to study at the academy.
After many long discussions at night in their crowded bed, the two boys finally made a pact(协议). They would toss a coin. The loser would go down into the nearby mines and support his brother with his earnings, while the winner attended the academy. Then, when that brother who won the toss completed his studies, in four years, he would support the other brother at the academy, either with sales of his artwork or, if necessary, also by laboring in the mines. They tossed a coin on a Sunday morning. Albrecht Dürer won the toss and went off to Nuremberg.
Albert went down into the dangerous mines and, for the next four years, financed his brother, whose works at the academy were almost a hit. Albrecht’s works were far better than those of most of his professors’, and by the time he graduated, he had begun to earn considerable fees for his works.
When the young artist returned to his village, the Dürer family held a festive dinner on their lawn to celebrate Albrecht’s homecoming. After a long and memorable meal, Albrecht rose from his position at the head of the table to drink a toast to his beloved brother for the years of sacrifice that had enabled Albrecht to fulfill his ambition. His closing words were “And now, Albert, my brother, it is your turn. Now you can go to Nuremberg to pursue your dream, and I will support you.”
