In the year 2024, a new celebrity emerged on the Internet: Moo Deng, a pygmy hippopotamus (矮河马) from Thailand. With her soft, wet skin and a life filled with play and good meals, Moo Deng charmed millions of people. Her name, which means “bouncy pork” in Thai, suits her cheerful personality.
Moo Deng’s rise to fame was more than just a passing trend; it was mainly a reflection of society’s desire for happiness. David Barash, a retired psychology professor, suggests that watching animals can be a way to forget about our troubles. Moo Deng’s playful behavior, from her first teeth to her playful falls, attracted many followers on social media. This led to a big increase in the zoo’s online popularity and inspired fans to create art and new makeup styles. A well-known Thai music company, GMM, even wrote a song for her in many languages.
Tony Sampson, who studies how things become popular online, calls this “emotional contagion (情绪感染).” “This means the emotion that makes us feel something, whether it’s joy or sadness, can spread quickly. While negative feelings can also spread, people often look for the emotion that lifts their spirits. Moo Deng was part of a larger group of animals that captured the Internet’s attention. However, we should treat this emotion reasonably”, he said.
Sai Satardekar, a zoologist, who studies animals’ behaviour, holds the view that people are drawn to these animals because we often think animals have some human qualities, which makes them relatable. Moo Deng’s appeal comes from her behavior that seems familiar to us, even though it might not always be an exact match to her actual feelings. He adds that acknowledging the emotion that animals share with us can be helpful, and Moo Deng might be the emotional support that many of us are looking for.
Moo Deng’s story shows how animals can bring joy and comfort to our lives. Her journey from a zoo in Thailand to the screens of people around the world is a heartwarming example of how the simple joy of an animal can touch our hearts and provide a moment of happiness in our busy lives.
8. What is the primary reason for Deng’s fame?
A. Her unique physical appearance. B. Her story on social media.
C. The public’s need for happiness. D. The zoo’s online popularity.
9. What can we know about from Sampson?
A. People are easily affected by others’ emotion. B. People fail to draw the Internet’s attention.
C. People like the negative emotion better. D. People should refuse “emotional contagion”.
10. What makes Deng attractive according to Satardekar?
A. Her inner emotion open to humans. B. Her comfort brought to humans.
C. Her needs delivered to humans. D. Her qualities similar to humans.
11. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. The ways of becoming a celebrity. B. The reasons for Deng’s popularity.
C. The emotion of attracting people. D. The definition for happiness.

Turning used cooking oil into pleasant smelling soap might sound like magic. But that’s what Janetti Francischi has been doing since 2020. Dispensing the soap in her community, Francischi has not only made residents in her neighbourhood use the valuable products but also contributed to the environment by repurposing a common waste item.
Inspired by her mother, who was a druggist, Francischi pursued a bachelor’s degree in biomedical sciences and a master’s degree in pharmacology (药理学) at the University of Sao Paulo. She also earned a PhD there. After 32 years as a professor at the Federal University of Minas Gerais, where she taught more than 5,000 students, Francischi retired in 2017.
Seeing the mess of used oil in the kitchen and heavy waste from community oil pollution, Francischi felt an urge to help her community to change the situation. Based on what she had learnt, Francischi started producing bars of soap from used cooking oil.
Francischi tried the soap-making process at her home. The first step was to extract the oil with a cloth to remove any residues (残渣). After that, she heated water to near boiling point and added sodium hydroxide (氢氧化钠), mixing it very well until they dissolved. Then, she added the cooking oil. This is the most challenging part because the mixture must be stirred with a stick for 40 minutes. To increase foaming and fragrance, she also added some washing powder. Then she poured it into a plastic container, and cut it hours later.
Francischi collected cooking oil first from her family, friends and neighbors and later from small businesses, such as street food sellers. She distributed the soap in the community. People came, brought their bottles of oil and returned later for their soap. She also partnered with the non-governmental organization Seu Vizinho in a poor neighborhood where even basic items can be considered a luxury. She designed four workshop sessions last summer to teach more people, where the participants were provided with all the materials. Francischi did this work as a volunteer. She hopes to continue with this project for the rest of her life.
12. What does the word “dispensing” in paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. Giving out. B. Taking in. C. Putting away. D. Using up.
13. What inspired Francischi to make soap at home?
A. Her mother’s influence. B. Her academic background.
C. Her wish for new career. D. Her concern for pollution.
14. What is the last but one paragraph mainly about?
A. The inspiration of recycling. B. The process of making soaps.
C. The way of collecting oil. D. The plan of helping people.
15. What may Francischi do in the future?
A. Do her design work. B. Develop new products.
C. Share ways to make soap. D. Teach back to university.
【答案】12. A 13. D 14. B 15. C

【12题详解】
词义猜测题。根据划线单词句中“…Francischi has not only made residents in her neighbourhood use the valuable products but also contributed to the environment by repurposing a common waste item.( Francischi不仅让她附近的居民使用这种有价值的产品,而且通过重新利用一种常见的废物,为环境做出了贡献)”可知,Francischi让社区居民使用这些有价值的产品,由此猜测她在社区分发自己做出来的产品。所以“dispensing”应该是分发、给予的意思,和A选项giving out“分发”意思相近。故选A项。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“Seeing the mess of used oil in the kitchen and heavy waste from community oil pollution, Francischi felt an urge to help her community to change the situation.( 看到厨房里乱糟糟的废油和社区石油污染产生的大量废物,Francischi感到迫切需要帮助她的社区改变这种状况)”可知,Francischi看到厨房用过的油造成的混乱以及社区油污染产生的大量垃圾,想要帮助社区改变这种状况,所以是对污染的担忧促使她在家制作肥皂。故选D项。
【14题详解】
主旨大意题。根据倒数第二段“Francischi tried the soap-making process at her home. Then she poured it into a plastic container, and cut it hours later.( Francischi在家里尝试了这种制皂方法。第一步是用一块布提取油,去除任何残留物。之后,她把水加热到接近沸点,加入氢氧化钠,充分混合,直到它们溶解。然后,她加入了食用油。这是最具挑战性的部分,因为混合物必须用棍子搅拌40分钟。为了增加泡沫和香味,她还加了一些洗衣粉。然后她把它倒进一个塑料容器里,几小时后切开)”可知,这段主要讲的是制作肥皂的过程。故选B项。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“She designed four workshop sessions last summer to teach more people, where the participants were provided with all the materials. Francischi did this work as a volunteer. She hopes to continue with this project for the rest of her life.( 去年夏天,她设计了四个工作坊来教更多的人,所有的材料都提供给了参与者。Francischi是作为志愿者做这项工作的。她希望在她的余生中继续这个项目)”可知,她去年夏天举办工作坊教更多人制作肥皂,并希望余生继续这个项目。由此推知,未来她可能会继续分享制作肥皂的方法。故选C项。

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Entering the eighth grade meant a new classroom to me, but the change had nothing to do with me. From my perspective, a classroom was just a classroom. I longed for the outdoor world, the hills of Tennessee where I was raised. My teachers didn’t value the attraction of hidden caves, gentle streams and the wild bears, just as I didn’t find much interest in math, history and the art of calligraphy. My head teacher often told me, “Douglas, you need to concentrate on your study instead of daydreaming.”
However, the rugged land, the wildlife and the adventures that awaited outdoors were all I could think about while I was chained to my eighth-grade desk. It seemed to me that there were two types of people in the world: those who belonged to the classrooms and those who belonged to the mountains. The teacher, Miss Cook, seemed to know which one I belonged to and had put me far away from the window.
“Douglas Clark.” She caught me when I was daydreaming and said she’d visit my parents if it continued. I made a joke on her. The class laughed, but Miss Cook did not. “How clever!” she said. “I think you should stay after school and share more of your cleverness.”
After school, I was waiting for Miss Cook’s punishment in the classroom when she came in and said to me. “I want you to tell me what you love about the world outside that window,” she said.
I was so puzzled that I didn’t know what to say. Was she setting some kind of trap? But Miss Cook really seemed interested. She listened attentively and even smiled as I shared my thought with her. “I’d like you to write a 100-word story about the outdoor adventure you enjoyed most.” She said and let me go home.
I turned in my paper the next day and waited for Miss Cook’s reaction. “This story was wonderful!” She said.
“I would like you to write another story, but remember to do your other assignments first.” Miss Cook said.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Miss Cook read dozens of my stories that year.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
“I would like you to write another story, but remember to do your other assignments first.” Miss Cook said. Her words made me realize that I needed to balance my passion for the fascinating outdoor world and my boring schoolwork. From then on, I committed myself to the classes and submitted my assignments on time every day. Gradually I found it was easy for me to understand what the teachers taught and began to fall in love with the school subjects. At the same time, encouraged by the teacher, I picked up my pen and recorded my observation and feelings of the world out of the window.
Miss Cook read dozens of my stories that year. She gave me precious advice on writing each time, which motivated me to keep writing. With her support, I not only improved my writing but also became interested in my studies. I began to look forward to the classes, which gave me the chance to learn and grow. I was really grateful that Miss Cook opened a door to the sea of knowledge for me, where I knew I belonged to the classroom as well as the outdoor world.

Born into a farmer’s family in Dalian, northeast China’s Liaoning Province, Dong Lina suffered from congenital (先天的) eye disease and went blind at the age of 10.
Like many visually-impaired children she finished compulsory education at a school for disabled people and began learning Tuina. In 2003, she finally obtained a job. Her life then was like a fixed route, but Dong was unwilling to take it for granted. “Teachers always told me not to give up learning new knowledge because it could give me more options in life,” she said.
One day she found an anchor (节目主持人) training program for visually-impaired youth. Dong realized that this might be her big moment, and she made a life-changing phone call.
After the training at the organization, Dong was recommended to a workshop at a radio station where she was the only visually-impaired person in the class. Her physical disability forced her to make an extra effort in her spare time. “My pronunciation was often not accurate, yet I could not correct it by looking into the mirror, and the teacher figured out a way that I touched his mouth to follow the way he pronounced,” said Dong.
Despite all the difficulties, Dong achieved the top level in the Mandarin proficiency test. In 2015, she became the host of a radio program and in 2020, she returned to the Communication University of China to pursue a master’s degree in broadcast and television.
“Life may not be perfect but we can make up for it with our own hard work and the support of society,” said Dong.
4. Why did Dong learn Tuina?
A. To have a fixed route. B. To make a living.
C. To become an anchor. D. To pursue a degree.
5. How did Dong improve her pronunciation?
A. By following the way directly. B. By touching her own mouth.
C. By feeling the teacher’s mouth. D. By looking into the mirror.
6. What may mainly contribute to Dong’s success?

After that she heated water to near boiling point and added sodium hydroxide (氢氧化钠), mixing it very well until they dissolved.
C Her wish for new career.

Miss Cook read dozens of my stories that year.
