A Have you ever been really hungry, but there wasn’t much to eat in your kitchen? Did you throw together a bunch of stuff you had on hand and were pleasantly surprised when it tasted good? You aren’t alone. Some of our favorite foods were created by accident. Here’s a sample menu of some familiar foods that would never have happened if someone hadn’t created them by mistake. POTATO CHIPS One of the world’s favorite snacks is the result of a complaint. In 1853, a man was eating dinner at Moon’s Lake House in Saratoga Springs, New York. He ordered fried potatoes, a popular side dish. But when they came out of the kitchen, he didn’t think they were crispy enough. He sent them back to the kitchen, where Chef George Crum was so angry at having his cooking criticized that he sliced the potatoes really thin, put lots of salt on them, and fried them. Not only did the diner love them, but everyone else did, too. They soon became a specialty of the restaurant. TOFU Tofu, or bean curd, is made by curdling (使凝结) fresh soya milk, pressing it into a solid block, and then cooling it. Tofu was accidentally invented in China 2,000 years ago, when a cook added seaweed to soya milk, which made it curdle. This is the same process that is used for making cheese. Like cheese, tofu is a great example of how really messing up a recipe can create something unexpectedly good. CHEESE PUFFS Did you ever wonder who thought up cheese puffs? The company that invented them wasn’t even trying to make food for people. It was trying to make animal feed. In the 1930s, the Flakall Company of Wisconsin made animal food from small, flaked pieces of grain. One day, an employee, Edward Wilson, watched workers pouring cornmeal (谷粉) into the flaking machine, wetting it to keep it from clogging (堵塞). Because the machine was very hot, the wet cornmeal came out of it in puffy ribbons that hardened when they hit the air. Wilson took some of the ribbons home, added oil and flavoring to them, and voila! Cheese puffs! 1. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage? A. Seaweed is also used for making cheese. B. Chef George Crum didn’t like to criticize others’ cooking. C. Cold wet cornmeal hardened when they hit the air. D. Bean curd dates back 2000 years in China . 2. What do the three foods have in common? A. They are the results of complaints. B. They were not created on purpose. C. They weren’t originally made for people. D. They are all popular throughout the world. 3. What’s the purpose of the text? A. To compare the features of some foods. B. To inform readers of some foods. C. To recommend some foods. D. To introduce the origins of some foods. 根据TOFU部分中的“Tofu was accidentally invented in China 2,000 years ago, when a cook added seaweed to soya milk, which made it curdle.”2000年前,一位厨师在豆浆中加入海藻,使豆浆凝结,意外地在中国发明了豆腐。 根据首段中的“Some of our favorite foods were created by accident. Here’s a sample menu of some familiar foods that would never have happened if someone hadn’t created them by mistake.” 根据首段中的“Some of our favorite foods were created by accident. Here’s a sample menu of some familiar foods that would never have happened if someone hadn’t created them by mistake.” B All the Beauty in the World, Patrick Bringley’s memoir (回忆录) about his 10 years working as a guard at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art (Met), brings new meaning to the term “art appreciation”. During 8–12 hour shifts spent among the galleries, he takes advantage of the gift of time to study the masterpieces he’s been hired to protect and to think about the role of art throughout history. Bringley is not the only Met staffer to write about the institution. But Bringley’s “guard’s-eye view” is unique, and he presents his personal story with sincerity. After his brother Tom’s death from cancer in 2008, Bringley gave up his job as a journalist for a job in which “I was happy to be going nowhere”. He explains, “I had lost someone. I did not wish to move on from that. In a sense, I didn’t wish to move at all.” Bringley doesn’t say when he decided to channel his experience of finding peace into art, but this story about jumping off the career ladder in order to find the space for quiet reflection is surprisingly suited to our times. All the Beauty in the World offers well-chosen facts about the museum to support Bringley’s personal tale. As interesting as these facts are, it’s Bringley’s reflections on dozens of individual paintings, photographs, sculptures and ancient artifacts that turn this book into a tribute (致敬) to the power of art. Discussing Alfred Stieglitz’s photographs of his wife, he writes, “I think that sometimes we need permission to stop and adore things, and a work of art gives us that.” In a Vermeer port rait of a dozing maidservant, he is moved to see that the artist caught “that feeling we sometimes have that a private setting possesses a holiness (神圣) of its own. It was my constant feeling in Tom’s hospital room”. As rich in moving insights as the Met is in treasures, All the Beauty in the World reminds us of the importance of learning not about art, but from it. This is art appreciation at a high level. 4. What makes All the Beauty in the World different from other books by Met staffers? A. Its author’s personal sad story. B. Its author’s unique point of view. C. Its well-chosen facts about the museum. D. Its detailed introduction to the artworks. 5.Why did Bringley decide to become a guard at the Met? A. To remember his dead brother. B. To enrich his journalism career. C. To find some peace and quiet in art. D. To study the artworks more closely. 6. How does Bringley tell the museum stories in his memoir? A. By relating museum facts to his personal life. B. By interviewing retired museum staff members. C. By presenting the background of each masterpiece. D. By engaging visitors in the discussion of the artworks. 7. What does the author think of the book as a whole? A. It reveals the inner world of the author. B. It offers new insights into art appreciation. C. It tells little-known facts about the museum. D. It deserves to be read for some peace and quiet. 作者介绍了Patrick Bringley的回忆录《All the Beauty in the World》以及他在纽约大都会艺术博物馆工作10年的经历。 根据第二段“Bringley is not the only Met staffer to write about the institution. But Bringley’s “guard’s-eye view” is unique, and he presents his personal story with sincerity.”Bringley并不是唯一一个写大都会博物馆的员工。 根据第二段“After his brother Tom’s death from cancer in 2008, Bringley gave up his job as a journalist for a job in which “I was happy to be going nowhere”. He explains, “I had lost someone. I did not wish to move on from that. In a sense, I didn’t wish to move at all.” Bringley doesn’t say when he decided to channel his experience of finding peace into art, but this story about jumping off the career ladder in order to find the space for quiet reflection is surprisingly suited to our times.”2008年,他的哥哥汤姆因癌症去世后,Bringley放弃了记者的工作,转而从事一份“我很高兴自己哪儿也去不了”的工作。 根据第三段“All the Beauty in the World offers well-chosen facts about the museum to support Bringley’s personal tale.”《All the Beauty in the World》提供了精心挑选的关于博物馆的事实来支持布林利的个人故事。 故选A项。 根据第一段“All the Beauty in the World, Patrick Bringley’s memoir (回忆录) about his 10 years working as a guard at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art (Met), brings new meaning to the term “art appreciation”.”Patrick Bringley的回忆录《All the Beauty in the World》讲述了他在纽约大都会艺术博物馆当警卫的10年经历,为“艺术欣赏”一词带来了新的含义。以及最后一段“As rich in moving insights as the Met is in treasures, All the Beauty in the World reminds us of the importance of learning not about art, but from it. This is art appreciation at a high level.” C The word “art” usually evokes (唤起) images of white-walled galleries, abstract paintings costing millions of dollars and wealthy people, far removed from our everyday experience. Yet, art in 21st century is a different story. The Internet has weakened the idea that art appreciation is only for the rich. It has enabled more people than ever to have access to art. Netizens are not only consumers of art but creators and participants, too. The social media has made it much easier to share unprofessional work with the whole world. An unprofessional artist can now sell work or get advertising money from online videos. “A picture is worth a thousand words” is the motto of data visualisation (可视化) fans. The amount of information available today can be huge, so some people are working on presenting data using visually appealing diagrams that are easy for the public to understand. Of course, diagrams can also be used by dishonest people to mislead the audience, so we need to take care to interpret them the right way. Another way that art advances education is by enabling us to understand concepts that are invisible to the naked eye. For most biology students, the names and functions of dozens of proteins go in one ear and out the other, but unforgettable videos like “The Inner Life of the Cell” turn proteins into tiny people with different jobs in a city of large machinery. The same goes for concepts in physics such as black holes—we can understand them better with the help of artists who have backgrounds in both art and science. Even though most people may not be consciously aware of it, art is all around us. As most of our surrounding environment is man-made, everything in it contains some element of art and can influence our behaviour—telling us where to go or how to interact with objects, feeding us true or false information and controlling our emotions. Art indeed has a greater impact than many would believe it does. 8. What is the second paragraph mainly about? A. How the Internet provides service for the rich. B. How the Internet brings art closer to everyone. C. How netizens can contribute to art. D. How people appreciate and use art. 9. What’s the author’s attitude towards using diagrams in paragraph 3? A. Optimistic. B. Disapproving. C. Objective. D. Indifferent. 10. What can be inferred from paragraph 4? A. Videos turn proteins into tiny people. B. Videos explain concepts better than pictures. C. Art helps students understand some concepts. D. Art helps artists have more backgrounds. 11. Which of the following best describes art in the 21st century? A. Accessible and powerful. B. Abstract and graceful. C. Expensive and digital. D. Traditional and controversial. 根据第二段“The Internet has weakened the idea that art appreciation is only for the rich, It has enabled more people than ever to have access to art.” 根据第三段“Of course, diagrams can also be used by dishonest people to mislead the audience, so we need to take care to interpret them the right way.” 根据第四段“Another way that art advances education is by enabling us to understand concepts that are invisible to the naked eye.” 根据最后一段“Even though most people may not be consciously aware of it, art is all around us.” 及“Art indeed has a greater impact than many would believe it does.” A。 D I was riding my special motorbike this past weekend and stopped at a store. Mr. Bryant does all kinds of things—and I will, too.” Her father hugged me and said, “I was sitting here praying for a gift for Amy that would encourage her. Identify your values. 2 Make a list of the values that drive you, or the issues you care about, and then look for organizations with complementary (互补的) missions and opportunities. For instance, if your primary motivation is to strengthen social connections with peers, you might look to organizations such as school groups that require interaction with other parents, or neighbors. If you’re motivated to serve the less fortunate, you might target organizations that work with housing-insecure populations, people with disabilities or members of historically disadvantaged groups. Motivations for volunteering are as diverse as the volunteers harboring them. 3 Try to involve the whole family. Many parents who volunteer turn giving back into a family affair. Community service is a great way to teach kids the value of selflessness. 4 Look for volunteer engagements that welcome people of all ages and abilities, and schedule time for the whole family to participate —whether that means spending an afternoon picking up trash on the side of the highway, or a week in a faraway flood zone. 5 Once you find a well-run organization that aligns with (符合) your availability, values, talents, and objectives, work with your contact there to set a volunteer schedule that fits your life. If you’re exploring a frequent engagement —say, a weekly or biweekly commitment—think carefully about how much time you can afford to donate. It’s better to commit to shorter or less frequent volunteer hours than to take on an unmanageable workload. A. What motivates you to give back? B. Don’t bite off more than you can chew. C. Are you ready to build a list of ideal places to volunteer? D. It’s also an opportunity to spend more time with your family. E. Don’t overthink the process of finding opportunities to volunteer. F. Whatever your motivations are, there’s an organization out there that needs your help. G. Now comes the most difficult part: finding volunteer opportunities that are right for you. 1.【答案】G 【解析】根据上文“You’ve sized up the benefits of volunteering, looked over your schedule, and decided you have both the time and desire to give back to your community.” 以及下文“Here are some tips to find and get suitable volunteer opportunities in your area—or farther afield.” 2.【答案】A 【解析】根据本段标题“Identify your values.” 以及下文“Make a list of the values that drive you, or the issues you care about, and then look for organizations with complementary missions and opportunities.” 故选A。 3.【答案】F 【解析】根据上文“If you’re motivated to serve the less fortunate, you might target organizations that work with housing-insecure populations, people with disabilities or members of historically disadvantaged groups. Allow me to explain my reasons and offer some suggestions. Firstly, disrupting your regular sleep pattern can result in fatigue, thus ultimately affecting your overall well-being. Secondly, as an exchange student, it is essential to prioritize your studies. Overindulging in late-night matches can potentially distract you from your academic work. Considering these concerns, I suggest you strike a balance between your passion for football and your need for adequate sleep. You may consider recording the matches and watching them at a more suitable time without compromising your sleep routine or academic commitments. I sincerely hope you take these suggestions into consideration. Yours sincerely, Li Hua 第二节(满分25分) 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。 It wasn’t fair. Aminah always studied hard, so there was nothing unusual about her receiving top marks at the end of the year. But Farhan was often playing with the village boys when he should have been studying. To help motivate him this year, their father had promised to buy him a bicycle if his grades improved. Aminah was sure that even this generous offer wouldn’t change her brother’s habits. But when Farhan started staying home and studying, everyone was surprised. At the end of the school year, Aminah received top marks as she always did. And, as usual, her parents gave her 100 rupees (卢比) as a reward. For the first time, Farhan got top marks too. True to his word, their father came home with a bicycle. It was well used, and much of the paint had been chipped (脱落) off. But to Farhan, it was the most beautiful bicycle in their country. Farhan’s friends cheered when they saw it. It was understood that something as precious as a bicycle would be shared with everyone. Well, almost everyone. After a few days of watching Farhan and the village boys learning to ride, Aminah and her friends grew bitter. They spent afternoons on the hill just north of the village, sitting in the shade of a mango tree and watching the lazy stream flow at the foot of the hill. They could hear the boys cheering and laughing on the other side of the hill. “Why doesn’t he let us ride, Aminah?” asked Fatima. Aminah shrugged (耸肩), trying to act as if she didn’t care. “He and the other boys just want the bicycle all for themselves!” replied Shehnaz. Sarah shook her head. “But Aminah is his sister! He should share with her.” An older sister commanded respect. As they talked, the boys’ screams grew closer. Aminah looked up and saw her brother on his bicycle at the top of the hill. “Look! I can do it!” Farhan yelled at the top of his lungs. He had finally gotten the hang of it. The boys cheered as he began to speed up. 注意: 1. 续写词数应为150左右; 2. 请按如下格式在答题纸的相应位置作答。 Suddenly, Farhan lost control of the bicycle, heading in the direction of the girls, toward the stream. Farhan looked at Aminah, then at his bicycle, then back at his sister. 【范文】 Suddenly, Farhan lost control of the bicycle, heading in the direction of the girls, toward the stream. “Help! Help! I can’t control its speed,” Farhan cried at the top of his voice. So nervous and frightened was Farhan that he had no idea how to stop the bicycle. Seeing the bike running at breakneck speed toward them, all the girls but Aminah shouted with fright and then ran away to avoid being hit. However, it was at the very moment that Aminah stood in the middle of the road, trying to pull the bike to slow down with all her strength. Finally, the bike stopped with no one being hurt. Farhan looked at Aminah, then at his bicycle, then back at his sister. He scratched his head, asking, “Aren’t you afraid of being hit?” “I could run away, but you’re my brother. I can’t leave you in danger,” Aminah replied in a determined voice. Hearing the words, he felt a sense of warmth welling up inside his body with tears of gratitude streaming down his cheeks. It hit him that he didn’t share his joy of getting the bike with his sister, let alone invite her to have a ride. Ashamed and guilty, he looked sincerely at his sister, “Would you like to have a try? I can teach you how to ride.” “Sure!”, Aminah agreed with delight. All boys and girls present cheered and laughed. After that, Farhan shared everything he had with his sister. 2 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 广州新东方优能中学教育 2024 年广州市海华高级中学高三期末考 英语 第一部分 阅读理解(共两节,满分50分) 第一节(共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5) 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。 A Have you ever been really hungry, but there wasn’t much to eat in your kitchen? B All the Beauty in the World, Patrick Bringley’s memoir (回忆录) about his 10 years working as a guard at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art (Met), brings new meaning to the term “art appreciation”. C The word “art” usually evokes (唤起) images of white-walled galleries, abstract paintings costing millions of dollars and wealthy people, far removed from our everyday experience. D I was riding my special motorbike this past weekend and stopped at a store. As I was getting my wheelchair off the back, a man watched me from his car and I noticed a wheelchair in his back seat. We spoke for a moment and I asked him about the wheelchair. He answered that it was for his daughter. “Well, do you think she would like to go for a ride on my motorbike with me?” I asked. He seemed shocked that a total stranger would ask him this. He thought about it for a second and said, “OK, as long as I can follow you.” He introduced me to Amy and he sat her on my back seat. Her father followed me for a few miles and she talked non-stop about what she wanted for Christmas. As we came back to the store, she said, “This ride is the best Christmas present I could ever receive. I have been in a wheelchair my whole life and didn’t know I could do this.” Then she turned to him and said, “Oh Daddy, I’m going to be OK. Mr. Bryant does all kinds of things—and I will, too.” Her father hugged me and said, “I was sitting here praying for a gift for Amy that would encourage her. She often felt that her life was dull compared to other children. God answered my prayer (祷告) just now. Now I pray that God will bless you for your gift to Amy today.” Being kind and thoughtful to others, we can be an answer to prayer. 12. What can we know about the author? A. He was a disabled man. B. He usually drove too fast. C. He worked in a store. D. He often helped people in trouble. 13. How did the father feel at first when the author invited his daughter for a ride? A. Anxious. B. Embarrassed. C. Surprised. D. Moved. 14. According to the passage, the girl __________. A. was not allowed to do some sports B. used to be a completely healthy person C. was unwillingly to communicate with a stranger D. usually felt sad about life because of her disability 15. What did the author’s gift refer to according to the girl’s father? A. The motorbike. B. The wheelchair. C. The ride. D. The prayer. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 You’ve sized up the benefits of volunteering, looked over your schedule, and decided you have both the time and desire to give back to your community. 1 Here are some tips to find and get suitable volunteer opportunities in your area—or farther afield. 第二部分 语言知识运用(共两节,满分30分) 第一节(共15小题;每小题1分,满分15分。) 阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 At the school Art Festival, I was asked to design the costumes for three school plays. 2 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
