One year before, at age 18, Leszyeski had aged out of foster care (寄养中心), having been in the system since she was four when her single mother was no longer able to care for her. Leszyeski was now enrolled in college hoping to become a doctor. And the only furniture she had in her apartment was an air mattress with a hole in it.
Then she learned about an organization Chairity. The organization provides furniture and household goods for young adults who have left foster care. Leszyeski reached out to Charity, a nonprofit formed by 23-year-old Maria Paparella.
Paparella first became aware of foster care in elementary school when her parents were considering adopting a child. The plan didn’t work out, but Paparella often found herself thinking about that child. “I’m really close with my family, and I just couldn’t imagine being completely on my own at 18,” she says.
At 16, Paparella visited Summit County Children Services, with a list of questions, trying to understand what aging out looked like. One of her questions was “What’s not being met for these young people?” Near the top of the list was furniture. “That struck home,” says Paparella. The idea of “moving into an apartment without a bed to sleep on or a sofa to sit on” pulled at her heartstrings.
Paparella contacted her parents’ friends, asking if they had spare furniture to donate. A local furniture store offered free ware-house space and its delivery truck. Watching the recipients’ faces when they received a bed, a couch — whatever — was amazing. Paparella remembers delivering a gold lamp to a woman and watching her polish it lovingly, getting rid of dirt and fingerprints.
Today, Chairity has given furniture to nearly 200 young adults in homes across six Ohio counties. Paparella is convinced these contributions give the recipients hope and confidence. Leszyeski agrees. “It makes me feel like I’m not different from other people. My whole life, I’ve felt abnormal,” she says, “Now, I feel normal.”
41.Which can best describe Leszyeski’s life after leaving foster care?
A.Tough but hopeful. B.Poor and aimless.
C.Wealthy but boring. D.Independent and carefree.
42.Why did Paparella found Chairity?
A.To get some financial benefits from it. B.To help those aging out of foster care.
C.To aid the needy couple adopt a child. D.To ask people to donate some couches.
43.Which of the following statements about Paparella is true?
A.She became aware of foster care in high school. B.Her parents successfully adopted a child.
C.She doesn’t know how to live alone without her family. D.She doesn’t like her family.
44.When was Paparella most touched at the age of 16?
A.Living without parents. B.Moving into a new house.
C.Getting free truck delivery. D.Visiting a foster care center.
45.What does Leszyeski think of Chairity?
A.It changes young adults’ whole life. B.It brings confidence to the recipients.
C.It has helped lots of homeless people. D.It makes people different from others.
【答案】41.A 42.B 43.C 44.D 45.B
根据第一段“One year before, at age 18, Leszyeski had aged out of foster care (寄养中心), having been in the system since she was four when her single mother was no longer able to care for her. Leszyeski was now enrolled in college hoping to become a doctor. And the only furniture she had in her apartment was an air mattress with a hole in it. (一年前,18岁的Leszyeski离开了寄养家庭,她从4岁起就被寄养在寄养中心中,因为她的单亲母亲无法再照顾她。Leszyeski现在上了大学,希望成为一名医生。她公寓里唯一的家具是一个有洞的气垫床垫)”可知,家里唯一的家具也是破损的,可知生活过的尤其艰难。根据第二段的“Then she learned about an organization Chairity. The organization provides furniture and household goods for young adults who have left foster care. Leszyeski reached out to Charity, a nonprofit formed by 23-year-old Maria Paparella. (然后她了解到一个组织Charity。该组织为离开寄养家庭的年轻人提供家具和家庭用品。Leszyeski向Charity求助,这是一家由23岁的Maria Paparella成立的非营利组织)”可知,尽管她生活困苦,但是得知有一个慈善组织能为他们这样的年轻人提供家具和家庭用品,Leszyeski向Charity求助,所以是充满希望的。故选A。
由文章第二段中“The organization provides furniture and household goods for young adults who have left foster care. (该组织为离开寄养家庭的年轻人提供家具和家庭用品)”可知,她创办Chairity是为了帮助那些离开寄养中心的年轻人。故选B。
43.细节理解题。由文章第三段中““I’m really close with my family, and I just couldn’t imagine being completely on my own at 18,” she says. (我和我的家人关系非常亲密,我无法想象自己在18岁时完全独自生活)”可知,她不知道没有家人怎么独自生活。故选C。
44.细节理解题。由文章第四段中“At 16, Paparella visited Summit County Children Services, with a list of questions, trying to understand what aging out looked like. One of her questions was “What’s not being met for these young people?” Near the top of the list was furniture. “That struck home,” says Paparella. (16岁时,Paparella带着一系列问题参观了萨米特县儿童服务机构,试图了解离开寄养中心后的生活会是怎样的。她的问题之一是:“这些年轻人有什么需求没有得到满足?”列在首位的就是家具。“这深深触动了我,”Paparella说)”可知,当Paparella16岁时,她最感动的时候是在访问寄养中心时。故选D。
45.细节理解题。由文章最后一段中“Paparella is convinced these contributions give the recipients hope and confidence. Leszyeski agrees. “It makes me feel like I’m not different from other people. My whole life, I’ve felt abnormal,” she says, “Now, I feel normal.” (Paparella坚信,这些捐赠能让收件人看到希望和信心。Leszyeski也表示赞同。“这让我觉得自己和别人没什么不同。一直以来,我都觉得自己很异常,”她说,“现在,我觉得正常了。”)”可知,Leszyeski认为Chairity能给接受者带来信心。故选B。

Fish often travel in schools. How and why each fish does what it does is what makes their schooling so puzzling to scientists. Now scientists think they have a clue as to why schooling is so common. It saves the fish energy—lots of energy.
A new study has compared the energy a fish uses as it swims. And moving in a school reduced the energy a fish used by more than half compared to when it swam alone, it found. “The whole idea of measuring what it costs animals to move is an important one,” says George Lauder, a fish biologist at Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass., and an author of the new study. Many physiologists have been looking into this for years, he notes. “This is the first paper, I think, that’s really measured that comprehensively.”
Lauder and Zhang, also at Harvard, worked with giant danio, small fish that love to swim. Sometimes the team put eight at a time into a water tank shaped a bit like a racetrack. Other times, they just put in a single fish. The danio didn’t loop (绕圈) around the tank like race cars. Instead, they swam in one spot, like a runner on a treadmill (跑步机), as a motor pushed the tank’s water around, creating a current. As the fish swam, a special device called a respirometer (呼吸器) measured how much oxygen they used. Oxygen helps to fuel muscles. For example, people who sprint (短跑) use a lot of oxygen. Afterward, they often need a few minutes to recover and catch their breath. Here, the researchers used oxygen as a gauge (测量标准) of how much energy the fish used to swim in place.
Researchers filmed giant danio in an experimental flow tank to study their movements and energy use. To make them swim fast—like a sprinter—the researchers increased the speed of the circulating water current. When they slowed the water, the fish slowed too. Schooling fish used less oxygen than when they swam alone. And, they took less time to recover from a sprint. In other words, they had an easier time “catching their breath” after schooling.
By schooling, fish can save their energy for other important things, says Frank Fish. He works at West Chester University in Pennsylvania, where he studies the dynamics of motion in animals. For instance, if fish are young, they can put that energy into growth. As adults, they can use it to reproduce or to avoid predators (捕食者).

根据第一段“Fish often travel in schools. How and why each fish does what it does is what makes their schooling so puzzling to scientists. Now scientists think they have a clue as to why schooling is so common. It saves the fish energy—lots of energy.(鱼经常成群结队地游动。每条鱼的行为方式和原因使得科学家们对它们的鱼群行为感到困惑。现在,科学家们认为他们找到了为什么学校教育如此普遍的线索。它节省了鱼的能量——大量的能量。)”可推知,第一段作者主要提出了一个论点,故选D。
47.细节理解题。根据第二段中“The whole idea of measuring what it costs animals to move is an important one(衡量动物移动成本的整个想法是一个重要的想法)”可知,根据第2段可知,研究的关键衡量动物移动的成本。故选C。
根据第三段中“The danio didn’t loop (绕圈) around the tank like race cars. Instead, they swam in one spot, like a runner on a treadmill (跑步机), as a motor pushed the tank’s water around, creating a current.(丹尼奥鱼不像赛车那样绕着坦克转一圈。相反,它们在一个地方游泳,就像跑步机上的跑步者一样,电机推动水箱中的水,产生水流)”可知,达尼奥鱼通常在固定地点游泳。故选C。
49.推理判断题。根据第四段中“Researchers filmed giant danio in an experimental flow tank to study their movements and energy use. To make them swim fast — like a sprinter — the researchers increased the speed of the circulating water current. When they slowed the water, the fish slowed too. Schooling fish used less oxygen than when they swam alone. And, they took less time to recover from a sprint. In other words, they had an easier time “catching their breath” after schooling.(研究人员在实验流动池中拍摄了巨型达尼奥鱼,以研究它们的运动和能量使用。为了让它们像短跑运动员一样游得更快,研究人员提高了循环水流的速度。当他们放慢水流速度时,鱼也放慢速度。成群的鱼比单独游动时消耗的氧气更少。而且,他们从冲刺中恢复的时间更少。换句话说,他们成群后更容易“喘口气”)”可知,作者写第4段的目的是明确实验方法和结果。故选B。
50.主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段“Fish often travel in schools. How and why each fish does what it does is what makes their schooling so puzzling to scientists. Now scientists think they have a clue as to why schooling is so common. When you choose a friend, you should be very careful. A good friend can help you study. You can have fun together and make each other happy. Sometimes you will meet fair weather (晴天) friends. They will be with you as long as you have money or luck, but when you are down, they will run away. How do I know when I have found a good friend? I look for certain qualities of character, especially understanding, honesty and reliability .
Above all else, I look for understanding in a friend. A good friend tries to understand how another person is feeling. He is not quick to judge. Instead, he tries to learn from others. He puts himself in the other person’s place, and he tries, to think of ways to be helpful. He is, also a good listener.
At the same time, however, a good friend is honest. He does not look for faults in others. He notices their good points. In short, good friends will be honest to each other and accept each other.
Another quality of a friend is reliability. I can always depend on a good friend. If he tells me he will meet me somewhere at a certain time, I can be sure that he will be there. If I need a favour, he will do his best to help me. If I am in trouble, he will not run away from me.
There is a fourth quality that makes a friend special. A special friend is someone with whom we can have fun. We should enjoy our lives, and we would enjoy our friendship. That is why I especially like friends who are fun to be with. A good friend likes the same things I like. We share experience and learn from each other. A good friend has a good sense of humour, too. He likes to laugh with me. That is how we share in the joy of being friends. And I know that he is looking for the same quality in me.
When I meet someone who is reliable, honest, and understanding, I know I’ve found a friend!
51.If you have fair weather friends, what will happen to you?
A.You will become rich.
B.You can be sure that you get real friends.
C.You will be refused when you get into trouble.
D.They will give you all that they have when you need help.
52.Which is the most important the writer thinks in choosing a friend?
A.Honesty. B.Reliability. C.Understanding. D.A sense of humour.
53.What does the underlined word “down” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A.Cloudy. B.Unusual. C.Unhappy. D.Pleased.
54.What will a good friend do?
A.He will look for faults in others. B.He will do his best to help me.
C.He likes to laugh at me. D.He is funny.
55.What does this passage mainly talk about?
A.the qualities of a friend B.where to choose friends
C.how to get along with friends D.the importance of having a friend
【答案】51.C 52.C 53.C 54.B 55.A
根据第一段中“Sometimes you will meet fair weather(晴天)friends. They will be with you as long as you have money or luck, but when you are down, they will run away. (有时你会遇到酒肉朋友。只要你有钱或运气好,他们就会和你在一起,但当你down时,他们就会跑掉。)”可知,当你有一些酒肉朋友的时候,你有钱或运气好,他们就会和你在一起;反之,当你陷入困境时,你会被拒绝。故选C。
52.细节理解题。根据第二段中“Above all else, I look for understanding in a friend. A good friend tries to understand how another person is feeling.(最重要的是,我希望朋友能理解我。好朋友会试着去理解另一个人的感受。)”可知,对作者来说寻找朋友最重要的是朋友能够理解作者。故选C。
53.词义猜测题。根据划线词前面的内容“They will be with you as long as you have money or luck(只要你有钱或运气好,他们就会和你在一起)”以及后文的“they will run away.(他们会逃跑。)” 故划线词与C选项“Unhappy(不开心)”为同义词。故选C。

A选项“the qualities of a friend(朋友的品质)”概括文章主要内容,符合题意。故选A。
When Poppy Johnson, a 23-year-old London-based college student, was only five, she accidentally saw Michael Jackson’s Thriller music video. Ever since then, she has been suffering from a fear of pop legend Michael Jackson.
Every time she sees or hears anything about Michael Jackson — a song, an interview or even a poster, she will experience a moment of fear. Her fear even grows stronger at home, as Poppy’s parents are big fans of Michael Jackson and have a collection of souvenirs around their house. But she never tells them this would add to her fear at home. Poppy explained, “I never really spoke about it or told it to other people, as I worried they’d think I was silly.”
Managing her fear of Michael Jackson hasn’t been easy for Poppy, who would often excuse herself whenever she was out with her friends and a Michael Jackson song started playing. She would then spend a few minutes somewhere else trying to take her mind off it.
Earlier this year, when the documentary Finding Neverland came out, news and photos of Michael Jackson were everywhere online. At that time, Poppy’s life was quite tough and she always felt that her heart was in her mouth.
Poppy recently started opening up about her unusual fear and even started taking steps to handle it. She started seeing a hypnotherapist (催眠师). After four weeks, she now says things are getting better. In addition, she told her parents that the things related to Michael Jackson at home made her feel fearful and finally her parents understood her and completely removed all the things about Michael Jackson.
Now Poppy’s situation is getting better and better. She reminds anyone else who experiences similar things that it is important to seek help as early as possible.
56.What made Poppy feel fearful at home? (no more than 10 words)
57.How did Poppy usually avoid things related to Michael Jackson in public?(no more than 10 words)
58.What does the underlined part in Paragraph 4 mean? (no more than 5 words)
59.What did Poppy do to deal with her fear? (no more than 15 words)
60.What do you think of Poppy’s situation and what is your suggestion? (no more than 20 words)
56.The souvenirs about Michael Jackson collected by her parents. 57.By trying to go somewhere to focus on something else. 58.She felt very frightened. 59.She turned to a hypnotherapist for help and opened her heart to her parents. 60.I think that her situation is fearful. It’s unwise to keep problems to ourselves and we should bravely face problems and ask for help.
根据第二段前两句“Every time she sees or hears anything about Michael Jackson—a song, an interview or even a poster, she will experience a moment of fear. Her fear even grows stronger at home, as Poppy’s parents are big fans of Michael Jackson and have a collection of souvenirs around their house.”(每当她看到或听到任何关于迈克尔·杰克逊的东西——一首歌、一次采访甚至一张海报,她都会感到恐惧。 The souvenirs about Michael Jackson collected by her parents.
根据第三段“Managing her fear of Michael Jackson hasn’t been easy for Poppy, who would often excuse herself whenever she was out with her friends and a Michael Jackson song started playing. She would then spend a few minutes somewhere else trying to take her mind off it.”(对波比来说,克服对迈克尔·杰克逊的恐惧并不容易,每当她和朋友出去玩,听到迈克尔·杰克逊的歌时,她就会找借口走开。 By trying to go somewhere to focus on something else.
根据第四段第一句“Earlier this year, when the documentary Finding Neverland came out, news and photos of Michael Jackson were everywhere online.”(今年早些时候,当纪录片《寻找梦幻岛》上映时,迈克尔·杰克逊的新闻和照片在网上到处都是。) 故推知her heart was in her mouth意为“感到害怕的”。 She felt very frightened.
根据第五段“Poppy recently started opening up about her unusual fear and even started taking steps to handle it. She started seeing a hypnotherapist. After four weeks, she now says things are getting better. In addition, she told her parents that the things related to Michael Jackson at home made her feel fearful and finally her parents understood her and completely removed all the things about Michael Jackson.”(波比最近开始公开她不寻常的恐惧,甚至开始采取措施来处理它。 She turned to a hypnotherapist for help and opened her heart to her parents.
I think that her situation is fearful . It’s unwise to keep problems to ourselves and we should bravely face problems and ask for help.或I think her situation gives us a good warning lesson. It is important to seek help as early as possible, whoever experiences similar things.

46.In writing Paragraph 1, the author aims to ________.
A.raise a question. B.make a comparison.
C.propose a definition. D.present an argument.
47.According to Paragraph 2, what is the key to the study?
A.Reducing the energy a fish uses while swimming.
B.How to force the fish to swim in schools.
C.Measuring the cost of animal movement.
D.How to measure fish swimming habits comprehensively.
48.What can we learn from Paragraph 3?
A.Giant danio loves to swim in circle.
B.It was no way to measure how much oxygen the danio consumed.
C.The danio usually swam in a fixed spot.
D.The danio used little energy while sprinting.
49.What is the author’s purpose in writing Paragraph 4?
A.To stress the necessity of this experiment.
B.To clarify the experimental method and result.
C.To suggest a way to measure the energy used by fish.
D.To emphasize the importance of the experiment.
50.What makes the best title for the passage?
A.An Experiment with Giant Danio.
B.Swimming in Schools Lets Fish Save Lots of Energy.
C.How does Giant Danio Swim?
D.Giant Danio Likes Travelling in Schools.

I felt that my ear drums almost got broken. His 25 was only two feet away from my ears. For a while, I thought of 26 back and stopping him yelling. People around were turning to look at him, and I could read their 27 , “Is he never going to stop?”
At halftime I 28 by walking for a few minutes outside the stadium. I was thinking of seeking an empty seat in the student section across the stadium 29 the thought occurred to me—I could write something about this!
30 , when returning to my seat, I missed my steps and fell 31 on the stairs. As I was struggling to 32 , a pair of huge hands helped me from behind. I looked back and saw Super Lungs’ smiling face and 33 eyes. I suddenly felt that he was gentle and kind somehow.
