“You look like a friend of mine.”
You’ve probably heard that before.
It may seem obvious that we all have a doppelgänger—he or she isn’t related to us but looks like us—somewhere in the world. But no one was able to prove it until now. According to a new study, doppelgänger do exist, and they may share more than just looks.
Canadian artist Francois Brunelle has been taking photos of total strangers who look alike since 1999. Scientists in Spain studied 32 pairs of Brunelle’s models.
They compared black-and-white photos of the 32 pairs using 3 different kinds of facial recognition software (面部识别软件). All of the people also took DNA tests and answered questions about their lives—for example, about their diet and whether they had pets.
Using all the facial recognition software, the scientists found that 16 of the 32 pairs were very similar. After they studied the DNA of the 64 people, they found that 9 of the 16 very similar pairs also had some of the same DNA, with 19,277 shared genetic variations (遗传变异).
They also found the 16 pairs shared physical characteristics (身体特征) such as weight and height, as well as habits and behavior like smoking and education. It means that the shared genes affect not only looks, but also living habits.
Manel Esteller, who was a member of the research team, said, “As the population of the world is so large, it is natural that there will be strangers with similar faces and similar DNA.”

Recently, the 20-minute park theory (理论) is a hot topic on social media. This theory suggests that a 20-minute visit to a park can help people feel better, according to the International Journal of Environmental Health Research. Whether you exercise or simply take a walk in the park, it can help you relax. Actually, it is nature that benefits (使受益) us.
How does nature have a good influence on our body and mind? Studies show that when we are in natural environments, our heart rate and blood pressure reduce. Also, being outdoors, seeing trees, hearing birds’ songs, looking at the sky, and feeling in connection with nature help to lower people’s stress, reduce anxiety and increase their confidence.
What can we do to connect with nature? In fact, nature is all around us. For example, we could take up a new hobby or activity that allows us to spend more time outside, such as bird watching, gardening, or simply going for a run or walk in the park or the forest. Changing the way to school or work could also make a difference. We will certainly benefit even from just walking to work through a park or a quieter area with more trees.
Many people are making a close connection with nature. Huang Bingbing, an office worker in Shenzhen, is one of them. There are many community parks now. She is used to visiting the small park near her company during her weekday lunch breaks. “On that grass field, I could connect with living plants and animals, allowing me to have a fresh mind and forget about the stress from work for a while, ” Huang said.
Lately the 20 minute park theory has enjoyed popularity online. According to it, people can 25 , walk or do other things at a park for 20 minutes to relax. That’s because 26 is good for both body and mind. To connect with it, we just need to spend more time outside like in a park or the forest. Besides, it will be 27 helpful if we walk through a quieter place with more trees on the way to school or work. 28 the community park during the lunch break is also a nice way. Maybe you will forget about stress and your mind will be 29 after your stay. Have a try!
