As we enjoyed our trip in Paris, I noticed that the people we came across were helpful, kind and nice. One day, an employee from a burger place across the street from our hotel noticed my Cleveland Cavaliers cap. We struck up a conversation about basketball and he encouraged me to visit his establishment.
The next day we stopped there — a snack bar, and the guy that I talked to wasn’t there. Overall, there was room for about a dozen people to eat in the place. The guy that was taking my order spoke a little English, just enough for me to understand. Midway through my attempt to place my order, he apologized that his English wasn’t very good. I thought for a split second and responded “et mon francais est très mal!”
He froze for a moment and the look on his face was priceless. It was some combination (混合) of shock, surprise, being impressed and a little amusement. He shook my hand and said “okay, okay that’s good! ”
It was just a small connection with someone on the other side of the world, someone I’ll probably never see again. But for that instant there was a cool connection between two people, both understanding that speaking other languages wasn’t easy! Both appreciating each other’s effort to communicate in a way that the other person would understand, no matter how bad our attempts were.
Later I found that my direct translation wasn’t exactly what I intended. I didn’t find that out until much later! I was attempting to say “and my French is very bad”, what came out instead was “and my French is very wrong”. That was so much better because I just proved my point even more without knowing it.
Perhaps the best part of the story is that the burger that I got was the best burger that I’ve ever had in my life! I still dream about that burger and laugh every time I think about going to that burger spot.
24.What does the author think of their trip in Paris?
A.Pleasant. B.Hard. C.Adventurous. D.Embarrassing.
25.How did the guy respond when he first heard the author’s poor French?
A.He felt funny. B.He felt angry.
C.He was amazed. D.He was indifferent.
26.What value is the author trying to promote through the story?
A.Willingness and courage. B.Kindness and adventure.
C.Forgiveness and generosity. D.Understanding and respect.
27.What does the author want to express in the last paragraph?
A.He likes eating burger best. B.He speaks highly of that snack bar.
C.He is impressed by the snack bar trip. D.He dreams to visit the snack bar again.

Tens of millions of bees are likely being killed each day by vehicles (车辆) in the western United States, a new study finds. The paper, published in Sustainable Environment, is the first to show how cars may be causing the loss of bees. Bees are important because they help pollinate (传粉) wild plants and a third of the world’s crops.
Scientists have studied the “insect disaster” by counting dead insects along roadsides. Most studies have focused on forests and larger insects. But bee diversity (多样性) is greatest in dry, open areas, and most bees are tiny — just 2 to 25 millimeters long.
A research team from Utah State University studied bee deaths by driving on highways, paved roads, and unpaved roads during the day when bees are active. They made 29 trips around Utah in spring and summer, traveling more than 9,334 kilometers, and identified bees that were hit by cars. Every trip resulted in at least one bee death, and they found 14 different species.
The researchers guessed that one car driving between Salt Lake City and Moab might kill 50 to 175 bees. Based on traffic data, that means several million bees are killed when 94,000 cars travel that route each day. Millions of cars run in Utah daily, and similar trips happen in nearby states, so the total number of bees killed each day in the region is likely in the tens of millions.
Although the numbers are based on simple assumptions (假设) they are still important. There are ways to reduce these deaths. Research has shown that bees usually avoid crossing roads unless there are plants in the middle. So, creating healthy habitat along both sides of a road, but not in the middle, could help.
28.What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.Limitations on such studies. B.The influence of climate on bees.
C.Living areas of various bees. D.Scientists’ efforts to study diversity.
29.How does the author mainly develop paragraph 3 and paragraph 4?
A.By making a comparison. B.By listing related numbers.
C.By showing real data related to bees. D.By stating the result of the team’s study.
30.Which is one way to prevent bees from being killed?
A.Raising drivers’ awareness. B.Placing flowers in the middle.
C.Growing plants on roadsides. D.Leaving more space available.
31.What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A.To explain the bee’s diversity. B.To remind readers to drive less.
C.To introduce the danger to bees. D.To ask people to grow more flowers.
D
Are you attracted to far- away places? Do you prefer to vacation away from other tourists? Are you careful to take only memories and to leave only footprints (足迹)? If you answered yes to more than one of these questions, you just might be an ecotourist.
Ecotourists are people who want to experience the real natural world and leave it that way when they return home. It started in the 1990s and ecotourism (生态旅游) is now growing three times faster than the tourism industry at large. The Ecuador’s Amazon Basin (盆地) is contributing to that development, and it gives a view of what ecotourism looks like.
At the Ecolodge, a small group of cabins (小屋) sits Kapawi Ecolodge in the middle of the Achuar people’s reserve (保护区) and is only reached by air. From here, visitors can explore parts of the Amazon rainforest seen by few outsiders. Local guides explain how the forest is like their supermarket, where they find food, clothing, medicine and tools. As a result, tourists learn to appreciate the local culture as well as the natural environment.
The owners of Kapawi pay monthly rent to the Achuar people, but they also train the community to run and manage the lodge. They have agreed on a plan to turn the operation over to the Achuar completely by 2011. The owners are working to make ecotourism benefit the local people.
You probably won’t start your own ecolodge, but you can be an ecotourist if you follow these guidelines: Protect the environment; Support local businesses; Respect the local customs and traditions.
The world is full of attractive places to visit. As an ecotourist, you can enjoy them yourself and make sure that they remain beautiful for future generations as well.
32.What do we know about Ecotourists?
A.Their travel has little bad influence on the natural world.
B.They travel to the places without any public transportation.
C.They prefer destinations with amazing and unique adventure.
D.Their travel is mainly for escaping from the modern civilization.
33.Why are local guides talked in paragraph 3?
A.To give an example of career. B.To explain how to live in the rainforest.
C.To show the importance of natural resource. D.To attract more outsiders here to live a life there.
34.What can you do to be an ecotourist?
A.Respect local customs. B.Buy food from other parts.
C.Adventure in the far- away places. D.Travel by air or on foot.
35.On which part of the newspaper can you read this text?
A.Politics. B.Economy. C.Literature. D.Sightseeing.

We usually divide a year into four seasons. However, in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) theory, there are five seasons — spring, summer, late summer, fall, and winter. Each of the five has many features which guide us to change our habits to keep the balance between our body and the external environment.
Winter in TCM
The ancient Chinese believed that winter is the Yin “阴” season in nature. 36 So, winter is the time of year to reflect on health, save strength and regain energy, preparing ourselves for the start of new life in the spring. Different aspects of our lives like exercise, diet and emotions can influence our health and, therefore, our well-being in winter.
37
In TCM theory, winter is a season to feed ourselves both spiritually and physically. Activities in the season have a turn inwards. For example, we can do more writing, reading and other soul-nourishing (滋养灵魂的) activities. Although energetic exercise should be avoided, it’s important to keep our body healthy with gentle exercise, especially outdoor activities, in which we can get fresh air and sunlight. In addition, we should also go to bed earlier to save more energy. 38
Foods for winter
The principle of harmony between what we eat and the season is based on hundreds of years of experience in TCM. It suggests that we embrace locally-grown and seasonable foods, which is the way nature intends us to eat. During the winter, there are many foods beneficial to us. 39 — pumpkins, potatoes, root vegetables, winter greens, carrots, cabbage, mushrooms, and pears. Besides, hot soup, whole grains and roasted nuts also offer nourishment to feed the body in cold winter months. But always remember, moderation in all things is important.
Moods in winter
According to TCM theory, stress, depression and unresolved anger can also weaken our immune system, allowing external factors to affect our body in winter. 40 Meditation (冥想) and breathing techniques are particularly helpful, especially in relieving stress. TCM also offers a variety of treatments such as massage (按摩) and herbal formulas to manage our moods.
A.Activities in winter
B.Exercises in winter
C.Most of them naturally grow in this season
D.It is inactive, cold and dark, which makes us slow down.
E.If you exercise properly in winter, you can enjoy yourself.
F.Everyone can enjoy winter if they live and exercise appropriately.
G.So, keeping a good mood is especially important in this cold season.

Growing up in the USA, I always wanted to experience another culture. The 41 came when I was 15. After a few months of planning and 42 , I was ready to spend the second semester of my first high school year 43 an exchange student in Australia.
44 in Perth was one of the most exciting moments of my life. I realized then that there was no turning back. The family I would live with was waiting for me, and it would only be five days 45 the new school year. The school I attended was 46 my school back in the States. I was quite 47 at first, especially never having been to a new school — even in the US. Everything went without 48 , though. The teachers were welcoming and the students were friendly.
The most 49 time was travelling with other exchange students around Australia during our semester break. The few weeks we 50 together were full of amazing activities.
At the end of our 51 in Australia, we had three weeks to share our stories and help each other deal with leaving. It was only 52 that our last day together was filled with tears. We packed our camp, 53 e-mail addresses and gathered together for a final good-bye.
Upon coming home, an open mind was again important. Resettling home took time and 54 , but at last I made it. All the while, I was thoughtful to letting my family and friends know how happy I was to be home and how much I had missed them — though the experience is still 55 with me. So, if you have the opportunity to study abroad you most certainly should.

Becoming the captain of the cheerleaders is a significant accomplishment when you’re in Grade Eight, about to conclude your school journey with a sense of glory. At least, that’s what I had expected. The process of counting the votes only took about five minutes, but for me, it felt like an hour and a half. As Coach Williams prepared to announce, I inched to the edge of my seat ready to spring to my feet as soon as she said my name.
“Girls,” she began, “Laura Shaw has been elected Captain of the Maplewood High School cheerleading team.” A great cheer was heard throughout the gym, but all I could do was to contain my hysteria (歇斯底里). How could this be? Was everyone blind? Didn’t they realize I had my heart set on this?
As everyone cheered for Laura, I didn’t move a step toward her. It felt like she had stolen my moment and my dream. After a few minutes, I walked over to Laura with shaky legs and softly said, “Good luck, Laura.” in a whisper that barely masked my urge to cry.
Laura hugged me close and said,“I wasn’t expecting this, Annie. What a shock.”I didn’t lash out at (痛斥) her but in my heart I wanted to do just that. Who was she to claim the title I had worked three years to earn?
All the way home, I sobbed. There was no way I was going to stay on a team so blind they couldn’t see who should be the captain. The next morning, however, I went to my closet and took out my uniform. Once holding it close to me in my hands, I knew I couldn’t quit. As heartbroken as I was, my true love was cheering with my teammates.
How very hard it was to go to that first practice after Laura had been named captain. When I arrived, Coach Williams asked me to take three of the new girls and work with them on our basic drills. Laura was assigned three new girls as well.
Just then Laura suggested all eight girls working together, and though I hesitated, I eventually agreed.

At the award ceremony, Laura won her captain’s award, and then came the final “Cheerleading Spirit Award”.

66.Live a healthy life
Hello, everyone!
Living a healthy life is important to each of us. However, many high-school students don’t have healthy living habits. For example, a lot of them often lose themselves in playing computer games and stay up very late at night. What’s worse, most of them go to school without breakfast.
In my opinion, health is the most important thing. We need to live a healthy life. Here are some suggestions. First, having a good sleep is necessary. We should get up early and go to bed early. Moreover, it’s vital to keep a balanced diet. Students need to have breakfast every morning on time, and eat enough vegetables and fruits.
That’s all. Thank you!
67.范文
Just then Laura suggested all eight girls working together, and though I hesitated, I eventually agreed. We? Was she kidding? I just wanted to hate her and she kept making it harder and harder for me to do that. It wasn’t just that she showed interest in me—her interest was warm and genuine. Laura always made sure to include me when discussing changes in our routine and eventually I overcame myself and we grew to be very close friends.
At the award ceremony, Laura won her captain’s award, and then came the final “Cheerleading Spirit Award”. Later in the evening we arrived and listened as the various trophies were awarded to the most valuable player of each sports team. Just as Laura walked off the stage, Coach Williams stepped up to the microphone again and announced that there was one final trophy to be awarded. The cheerleading “Spirit Award” would now be presented to the girl who showed the most dedicated effort. When I heard my name announced I imagined I was as shocked Laura was coming toward me. We hugged each other, and Laura whispered, “Nobody deserves this more than you.”
