1.直接信息题——在原文中可直接找到答案,常用who,what,when,where,why和how等提问。

For more information, please click here.

Let’s get the bad news out of the way first: Dried fruit is a concentrated source of calories and sugars. The keys to getting the most out of it are to keep portions (份额) small and avoid those with added sugars. And choose the fruits that offer the biggest benefits, like the three here.
1. Apricots

Li Lin, a senior high 3 student, is preparing an argumentative essay on sea exploration. He has collected some texts for reference, two of which are shown below for his writing.
Text 1
Exploring the sea usually means exploiting it, which has caused numerous problems and will continue to cause more.
More exploration means more pollution. The Deepwater Horizon spilled over 200 million gallons (加仑) of oil into the sea in 2010. Plastic pollution is also harmful, killing many birds and fish, and has even been found in our tap water. Mining for resources is damaging, especially in the Arctic. Climate change has led to less ice, which means we can look for more fossil fuels(化石燃料) further north. But if we burn these, the ice will melt more, thus worsening this negative cycle. Whales and dolphins are also overfished for their meat or for research. Although this was banned in 1982, some countries are still “murdering” these intelligent creatures without mercy.
The sea stretches out immeasurably but it is more sensitive than we think. If we don't protect it, future generations will not forgive us.
Text 2
To truly understand our planet, we must explore the oceans which cover most of it. Opponents may be concerned, but sea exploration matters to the future.
Gaining more insights into the sea will also help us manage its resources better. Logging new species will improve our understanding of life on the earth. It may enable us to discover new medicines, as well as new sources of food and energy. Accessing the deep ocean may provide hints of events such as earthquakes. The population of the world is growing and we need new resources for future development. There are probably vast amounts of resources under the sea and ice, not just oil and gas but also valuable minerals. The related environmental risks should be balanced with economic needs. Hopefully, as technology improves, we can have more options for managing this balance.
40. Which of the following can be inferred from the texts?
A. Plastic pollution has directly contributed to the melting of Arctic ice.
B. Logging new species could lead to advancements in medicine and food production.
C. Overfishing has been completely stopped due to international bans introduced in 1982.
D. The population growth worldwide has reduced the need for deep-sea resources.
41. Before writing, Li Lin puts forward some questions. Which question CAN NOT Li Lin find the answer to from the texts?
A. What's the purpose of sea exploration?
B. How does sea exploration cause damage to the sea?
C. What benefits can sea exploration bring to other research fields?
D. What can we do to balance environmental protection and sea exploration?
42. If Li Lin is determined to write an essay based on opinions from both texts, which of the following will most probably be the central theme of his essay?
A. Ways to improve the efficiency of sea development.
B. Technological breakthroughs in sea exploration.
C. Balance between the impact of sea exploration and its benefits.
D. Appeal to protect the sea from unsustainable exploration.

■Lisa — Exhibition programmes Organizer, Science Museum
I’M responsible for putting temporary exhibitions together. This includes planning and designing the exhibition and promoting it. I have to read up about the subject of the exhibition beforehand and then talk to important people in the area so that I can establish the main themes and alms of the exhibition, and plan what objects and pictures should be displayed. I have to make sure the public can understand the thinking behind the exhibition, which means planning Interactive displays, workshops and theatre. I also have to bring in engineers and electrician s to make sure the final display is not dangerous to visitors. Before the exhibition opens, I help design and write the leaflets that well use to tell people about it.
■Sarah — Marine conservationist
I live by the coast and work from home. This involves responding to telephone enouines, producing education al resources and setting up training courses. Occasionally, I go into our main office but generally I am on the coast. I also work with schools and study centres and run courses for coastal managers and those Involved in making decisions about the fate of the seas. I do things like take them out to sea in a boat in an attempt to make them think more about the life underneath them. This often changes their views as it’s very different from making decisions using a computer screen. I am extremely lucky because conservation is my hobby, so the job has many highs for me. The downside of the job is that I work for a charity, so there is a constant need for more money. This means I’m always looking for more resources and I’m not able to achieve everything I want.
■Janet — Teacher of London Taxi Drivers
THE first thing I do when I get here at 7.30 a. m. is check the accounts. Then I see what new maps and documents need to be produced in order to learn the runs or routes necessary to pass the London taxi- driver test By midday, about 50 students are in school, working out how to make the journeys. They work out the most direct route, using the correct one- way streets, and right-and left-hand turns. I get involved when there’s a difference of opinion — like whether you can do a right turn ala particular junction. When they’ re close to the test, I’ll give them a simple route and no matter what way they say they’ll go. I’ll tell them they have to use another route because the road is closed. The next student will have to find a third route and again. I’ll come up with a reason why they can’t go that way. It’s just to make them think.
■Chris — Map Publisher
MY work is pretty varied. I have to make sure that the publishing programme matches market requirements, and ensure that we keep stocks of 300 or so of the books that we publish. We have very high standards of information and content. We receive many letters from readers on issues such as the representation of international boundaries and these in particular require a careful response. I discuss future projects and current sales with co- publishers. I work as part of an enthusiastic Group which makes the job that much more enjoyable. The negative side, as with many jobs, is that there is far too much administration to deal with, which leaves less time to work on the more interesting tasks such as product development and design.
4.According to the passage, whose job involves much outdoor work?
A.Lisa’s. B.Sarah’s. C.Janet’s. D.Chris’s.
5. needs to introduce problems that require solutions in her work.
A.Lisa B.Sarah C.Janet D.Chris
6.According to Chris, which of the following is the downside of her work?
A.Financial limitation. B.Lack of time for something interesting for her.
C.Readers’ misunderstanding. D.Too much negotiations with co- publishers.

Max Flannel is back to grapple with your workplace headaches.
Q1: Dear max, I am a 23-year-old social-media marketer who has only recently been required to return to the office. I had been told that the office would be great for having watercooler conversations. My office doesn’t seem to have a watercooler. What should I do?
Al: Now you ask, I’m not really even sure what a watercooler is. But the basic idea is to find a place where you know colleagues are bound to go regularly and where you can engage in light conversation about whether they saw anything good on TV last night. My advice is to hang around any tap and you should meet colleagues fairly regularly.
Q2: I have just been promoted into a senior role. I have noticed that many of my new peers like to open meetings with small personal anecdotes about something that happened to them that day-a minor cycling accident, say, or a chance encounter with an old acquaintance. It seems to be a way of getting people to relax a bit. The trouble is that nothing interesting ever seems to happen to me. What should I do?
A2: I wouldn’t worry too much. Those stories are mostly made-up and all deliberately boring. No executive ever opens a meeting talking about how they woke up in their own clothes but in a total stranger’s apartment. The goal is only to put people at their ease by making the speaker seem faintly human. Just say exactly what you put in your message above and then make your face go a bit vulnerable. That should do the trick.
Q3: I can never time my interjections correctly. If I try to judge when a speaker is about to stop talking, I either break in too early and end up apologizing for interrupting, or am a beat too slow and someone else grabs the floor. Do you have any tips?
A3:There are only three ways to handle this common problem. One is to start so loudly that everyone immediately gives way. You may come up against a fellow-shouter and then it’s just a battle of nerves: who is going to give way? The second is to raise your hand and wait: you’ll get your turn eventually and be listened to. The third is to get promoted. If you are senior enough, it doesn’t matter how ridiculous a point you are making;everyone gives way. Keep sending me your problems, and enjoy the break!
7.Which of the following will benefit most from the passage?
A.An experienced career adviser.
B.A graduate who is eager to find a job
C.A young manager who has just been promoted.
D.A CEO who wants to expand his business abroad.
8.What does the underlined phrase “grab the floor” in Q3 probably mean?
A.solve problems voluntarily B.take the initiative to speak first
C.keep silence during a conversation D.deliberately interrupt others’ speech
9.Which of the following statements might Max Flannel agree with most?
A.It’s harmful for supervisors to look vulnerable in front of others.
B.You don’t need a real watercooler to have a watercooler conversation.
C.Getting promoted is the best way to avoid being interrupted at corporate meetings.
D.It’s advisable to make up some engaging stories about yourself to increase your popularity.

Selling a Car to CarMax: How The Process Works
What is CarMax?
If you’re looking for used cars, you’ve likely come across a CarMax used car dealership or visited its website. CarMax has over230 locations across the country, and you can also buy a car through the retailer completely online. One advantage that CarMax has over completely online car retailers is that you can schedule a test drive at a vehicle’s CarMax location. Make an appointment with CarMax two working days prior to your test drive.
Will CarMax Buy Any Vehicle?
CarMax will buy most cars, even old cars that don’t even run. CarMax will even buy cars that they don’t expect to sell, such as badly damaged vehicles, that they will sell to auction. There are exceptions to the vehicles that CarMax will buy. The retailer will not buy a salvage vehicle. It will also not buy one with frame damage or flood damage.
Here are the three basic steps to help you navigate the process.
Step 1: Do Your Research
Before you begin the process, you should do your research. There are a few online tools to help you estimate your car’s trade-in value like the iSeeCars Price my Car Tool, Kelley Blue Book (KBB), or Edmunds. These prices can give you a good starting point and help you understand the value of your car
Step 2: Get an In-Person or Online Appraisal
When you take your vehicle in for an appraisal, the inspection process will take around 30 minutes. The appraisal team will give you a written offer that is valid for seven days, which will allow you to shop around for a better offer or to secure your replacement vehicle. Keep in mind that this offer is non-negotiable.
Step3: ________________
If you decide to have CarMax handle the sale of your car, you will then complete the necessary paperwork in the finance office. If you’re also purchasing a car through CarMax, your trade-in can be applied to your down payment (首付款).
16.According to paragraph 1 and 2, what is TRUE about CarMax?
A.Customers can only do in-person trade if they choose CarMax.
B.Arranging for test drives earns CarMax edge over other dealers
C.CarMax is willing to give an offer to owners of any used car.
D.Consumers can have a test drive even without reservation.
17.The underlined word “Appraisal” in paragraph 4 is closest in meaning to ________.
A.Evaluation B.Deal C.Repair D.Exchange
18.Which of the following best fits the blank in paragraph 5?
A.Negotiate for a Better Price B.Book a Test Drive
C.Maintain Your Car D.Accept the Offer

1.直接信息题——在原文中可直接找到答案,常用who,what,when,where,why和how等提问。

For more information, please click here.

解析:文章开篇便表明写信目的是 “to inform you of the official merger”,并提及 “ You may have been hearing noises about this combination”,这说明公司是想确认员工之前听到的合并消息,所以答案是 D。
解析:根据 “Change is always difficult and when people hear the word, "merger," it often comes with a sense of anxiety and worry.”
解析:从 “In the next coming months, there will be many changes taking place, but I want to reassure you that we will be doing our best to minimize layoffs. We anticipate very few, if any, job losses...”
解析:句子 “If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to talk to your managers.” 在 [2] 处的前文提到 “we have spoken to senior staff and told them to bring any questions, with your permission, to our attention so that we can make this transition as smooth as possible.”,这部分内容也是关于员工提问以及公司希望妥善处理问题以确保过渡顺利的,所以此句子放在 [2] 处最合适,B 选项正确。
merger/combination:合并
sense of anxiety and worry:焦虑和担忧的情绪
dedication to...:对……
virtual one - on - one sessions:虚拟一对一咨询
1. “We are writing this letter to inform you of the official merger (some call it combination) of Ellis Janes Financial Services with Connor O'Neal and Sons Financial Services.”
分析:这是一个简单句,“to inform you of...” 是动词不定式作目的状语,表明写信的目的;“of Ellis Janes Financial Services with Connor O'Neal and Sons Financial Services” 是介词短语作后置定语,修饰 “merger/combination”,说明是哪两个公司的合并。
2. “As of June 1, our company will become Janes and O'Neal Financial Services.”
3. “In the next coming months, there will be many changes taking place, but I want to reassure you that we will be doing our best to minimize layoffs.”
“In the next coming months, there will be many changes taking place” 是一个 there be 句型的句子,“taking place” 是现在分词短语作后置定语,修饰 “changes”,表示 “即将发生的变化”;“but I want to reassure you that we will be doing our best to minimize layoffs” 是一个主从复合句,“but” 连接两个并列的句子,在后面的句子中,“that we will be doing our best to minimize layoffs” 是宾语从句,作 “reassure” 的宾语,“to minimize layoffs” 是动词不定式作目的状语。
4. “While they may not have an immediate answer for you, we have spoken to senior staff and told them to bring any questions, with your permission, to our attention so that we can make this transition as smooth as possible.”
“While they may not have an immediate answer for you” 是一个让步状语从句,表示 “虽然他们可能无法立即给您答复”;“we have spoken to senior staff and told them to bring any questions, with your permission, to our attention so that we can make this transition as smooth as possible” 是主句,其中 “we have spoken to senior staff and told them...” 是并列谓语结构,“to bring any questions, with your permission, to our attention” 是动词不定式短语作宾语补足语,“so that we can make this transition as smooth as possible” 是目的状语从句,说明前面动作的目的。

根据最后一段“The negative side, as with many jobs, is that there is far too much administration to deal with, which leaves less time to work on the more interesting tasks such as product development and design.(与许多工作一样,负面的一面是,要处理的行政事务太多了,这样一来,用于产品开发和设计等更有趣的任务的时间就少了)”可知,克里斯的工作缺点是没有时间做她感兴趣的事情。故选B。

根据第一段“Max Flannel is back to grapple with your workplace headaches.(Max Flannel回来了,为你解决工作场所的头痛问题)”可知,本文主要解决工作场所的头痛问题,再根据Q1“Dear max, I am a 23-year-old social-media marketer who has only recently been required to return to the office.(亲爱的max,我是一名23岁的社交媒体营销人员,最近才被要求回到办公室)”是一个刚回办公室的销售人员,Q2“I have just been promoted into a senior role.(我刚刚被提升到一个高级职位)”是一位刚晋升的经理,以及Q3“I can never time my interjections correctly.(我总是无法准确地把握插话的时机)”是一位无法准确地把握插话的时机的人,结合选项可知,应是C项“A young manager who has just been promoted.(刚被提升的年轻经理)”将从这篇文章中受益最大,因为有和他有同样经历的人的问题。故选C项。
根据前文“I can never time my interjections correctly. If I try to judge when a speaker is about to stop talking, I either break in too early and end up apologizing for interrupting, or am a beat too slow(我总是无法准确地把握插话的时机。
根据A1中“Now you ask, I’m not really even sure what a watercooler is. But the basic idea is to find a place where you know colleagues are bound to go regularly and where you can engage in light conversation about whether they saw anything good on TV last night. My advice is to hang around any tap and you should meet colleagues fairly regularly.(现在你问起,我甚至不太确定饮水机是什么。

【答案】16.B 17.A 18.D
根据第一段中“One advantage that CarMax has over completely online car retailers is that you can schedule a test drive at a vehicle’s CarMax location.(CarMax相对于完全在线的汽车零售商的一个优势是,你可以在CarMax指定的地点安排试驾)”可知,安排试驾使CarMax比其他经销商更有优势。
根据第四段中“…the inspection process will take around 30 minutes.(检查过程大约需要30分钟)”以及“…give you a written offer that is valid for seven days, which will allow you to shop around for a better offer or to secure your replacement vehicle.( 给你一份有效期为七天的书面报价,你可以在这段时间里货比三家,寻找更好的报价,或者确保你的新车安全)”可知,当你把你的车进行评估时,评估团队会给你一份有效期为七天的书面报价。 故选A项。
根据最后一段中“If you decide to have CarMax handle the sale of your car, you will then complete the necessary paperwork in the finance office.(如果你决定让CarMax处理你的汽车销售,那么你将在财务办公室完成必要的文件工作)”可推知,“接受这个报价”最适合第五段的空白处内容。故选D项。
