In the late 1940s, it was common to see young students practicing table tennis on a chalk-drawn table on the sidewalk at night. As a second-grader in a primary school, I began my journey with table tennis on such a table. Later, I became a player and then a coach of a national team, watching generations of players contribute to the success of table tennis.
Recently, at the age of 84, I received a national honorary title. I said, “Choosing to play table tennis is a decision I totally do not regret.”
During times when we didn’t have much, I even made my own bat (球拍). I would buy old photo frames made of plywood (胶合板) from stores, and then turn them into bases of bats, I would then attach rubber (橡胶) to make a simple bat. I recalled, “The ‘clang’ sound of hitting the ball with such a bat was very satisfying.
I formed a team called Red Flag at school. During holidays, we played friendly matches with ping-pong fans from nearby factories and schools. I often visited different places, where I could watch high-level players and learn from them.
In a competition held in 1961, I won third place in the men’s table tennis singles event. I also won the first-ever men’s doubles and mixed doubles championships for our team. In 1975, I became the head coach of the women’s table tennis team in my country. Under my guidance, the team always won the women’s singles title in competitions.
One of the outstanding athletes I discovered and trained became an extremely good table tennis player. Though she was short, she could see every ball coming her way as an opportunity. This allowed her to launch (发起) more attacks than others. Moreover, she had a strong desire to win and trained very hard.
24. What inspired the author to begin playing table tennis?
A. His love for making rubber bats.
B. International competitions on TV
C. Encouragement from his school coach and friends.
D. The sights of students playing on chalk-drawn tables.
25. What challenge did the author face when playing table tennis in his early days?
A. Poor lighting conditions. B. Limited access to equipment.
C. Difficulty of finding partners. D. Long distance between his home and tables.
26. What do we know about the author according to the last three paragraphs?
A. He introduced table tennis as an Olympic sport. B. He won his best honour in his seventies.
C. He trained the women’s team for his country. D. He led the men’s team to get many world titles.
27. What is the best title for the text?
A. The Art of Making a Bat. B. My Journey with Table Tennis
C. The Comment on a Table Tennis Champion D. My Process of Shaping the Future of Table Tennis
【答案】24. D 25. B 26. C 27. B

Koalas are known for their furry ears, round faces, and big black noses. They spend most of their time sleeping in the treetops of eucalyptus (桉树) forests. Because they love staying high up and moving very little, it is hard to find these cute Australian animals. But a new method might make it easier.
In areas where koalas, kangaroos, and other animals live, scientists are using a new way to find them. They capture DNA floating in the air using filters (过滤器) made of cheesecloth, a type of cloth often found in kitchens. These filters are placed between two metal plates. The scientists tested this method at 26 sites in four nature reserves in Queensland, Australia. At each site, they placed two filters - one about 1.5 meters above the ground with a fan to draw in air, and the other closer to the ground.
After a few days, the researchers collected the filters and studied the material caught in them. They were happy to find koalas’ DNA as well as DNA from eleven other species that live in the area.
Koala populations have dropped a lot in recent years because of wildfires and diseases. In 2022, the Australian government said that koalas are endangered in some parts of the country. To help protect them, scientists have used advanced tools like thermal imaging drones (无人驾驶飞机) and sound recorders to find koalas. The new method is cheaper and easier to use.
“Some of the work in this study is really an important step,” said an ecologist. The experiment was done in an uncontrolled environment, where things like strong winds or rain could affect the results. “The fact that they were still able to have some success is really encouraging,” he said.
28. What does the underlined word “capture” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Measure. B. Create. C. Limit. D. Catch.
29. What is a major reason for the application of the new method?
A. Koalas are in danger of dying out in America.
B. Falls in the numbers of koalas worries authorities.
C. There are few professionals to operate the device.
D. Some advanced equipment is too expensive to use.
30. Which of the following describes the ecologist’s attitude to the study?
A. Supportive. B. Uncertain. C. Doubtful. D. Disappointed.
31. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To request the government to make a difference.

When you listen to people speaking a language you don’t understand, it might seem like the words are flying past your ears at lightning speed.
But some languages really do seem to be spoken faster than others. Even if you know a little Spanish or Japanese, watching a TV show in those languages can be difficult! There’s a good reason for this — they are spoken faster! According to a 2019 study, speakers of these languages use more syllables (音节) per second.
In these two languages, speakers use almost eight syllables per second. Researchers studied 17 different languages. They took 170 recordings of native speakers reading the same 20 texts translated into their language and compared the speeds. For example, Mandarin (普通话) was spoken at just over five syllables per second. But this doesn’t mean that conversations in Mandarin last much longer than those in Japanese. Researchers found that while languages are spoken at different speeds, the rate at which people communicate information is about the same.
So how does that work? To understand more, the researchers looked at each syllable in the texts to see how much information each one carries. Some single syllable words give us a lot of information; for example, the words “hope” or “love” in English. These words give us much more information than many single syllables that are just sounds or parts of words.
Some languages are packed more densely (稠密地) with information, so speakers don’t need many syllables to communicate the same amount of information. The average Spanish syllable is not densely packed with information, so people speak faster. Mandarin, however, is densely packed with information, so it is spoken more slowly. This means that everyone finishes communicating at about the same time!
32. Why are Spanish and Japanese mentioned in paragraph 2?
A. To stress they are popular with TV. B. To explain how they are developed.
C. To prove why they are hard to learn. D. To state some languages are spoken quickly.
33. Which part is focused on in the study?
A. People’s identities. B. Language speeds.
C. Content of the text. D. Conversation time.
34. How did the researchers study the information rate in languages?
A. By analyzing information on each syllable. B. By comparing sentence lengths.
C. By measuring speaking speed. D. By counting words.
35. What do researchers find in the end?
A Mandarin uses more syllables than Japanese.
B. People need less time to understand Spanish.
C. More syllable words mean more information.
D. People speaking different languages communicate information at similar rates.
【答案】32. D 33. B 34. A 35. D
【解析】

There’s a good reason for this — they are spoken faster!(但有些语言确实似乎说得比其他语言快。即使你懂一点西班牙语或日语,看那些语言的电视节目也会很困难!这是有原因的——它们说得更快!)”可知,第二段提到西班牙语和日语是为了说明有些语言说得很快。故选D。
【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“They took 170 recordings of native speakers reading the same 20 texts translated into their language and compared the speeds.(他们录制了170段以母语为母语的人阅读同一20篇翻译成他们语言的文本,并比较了语速。)”可知,研究的重点是语言速度。故选B。
【34题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“To understand more, the researchers looked at each syllable in the texts to see how much information each one carries.(为了更深入地了解,研究人员查看了文本中的每个音节,以查看每个音节携带了多少信息。)”可知,研究人员是通过分析每个音节的信息来研究语言中的信息率的。故选A。
【35题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“Researchers found that while languages are spoken at different speeds, the rate at which people communicate information is about the same.(研究人员发现,虽然语言的语速不同,但人们传递信息的速率大致相同。)”可知,研究人员最终发现说不同语言的人以相似的速率传递信息。故选D。

I loved going to school. But since May transferred from another school, the atmosphere had become a bit strange. Everyone thought her attitude was a bit tough. May was about five feet eight inches tall, making her the tallest kid in our fifth-grade class and, in fact, the whole school. She challenged the shy third graders and her competitive (好胜的) spirit in gym class put pressure on the boys.
To avoid unnecessary trouble, I always kept a certain distance from her. I hoped it could stay that way. But everything changed one morning when I came to class with a new hairstyle. It all started when my best friend Jamie said my hair looked nice. I felt happy. However, I noticed May’s serious look, which made me a bit nervous, but I continued focusing on my math work. Then, as May walked past me, she commented, “Nice braid (辫子).”
I felt a bit surprised. I looked at her, then felt worried because I saw May make a scissors-like motion (动作) with her fingers towards me. I got nervous and misunderstood, thinking that she wanted to cut off my braid. After thinking, I decided to hide in the restroom after school to avoid meeting May on the way home.
I did this for a few days, feeling anxious. One morning, my mom noticed my change. She could see the stress in my eyes and the way I hesitated (犹豫) before leaving for school. She knew something was bothering me. So she asked what had happened. I told her, “May wants to cut off my braid.” Tears started rolling down my cheeks. Mom held my hand and said, “Don’t be afraid, honey. You might have misunderstood May. She might just want to make friends with you but doesn’t know how to express it.

【答案】 After hearing my mom’s words, I fell into deep thought. Did she really just want to make friends with me? I wasn’t sure, but I was willing to find out. I decided to talk to May. So I found her at break. I took my courage in both hands and said, “Hi, May. I wanted to invite you to my house this weekend,” my voice trembling slightly. Then, something unexpected happened. May smiled. Her smile was warm and sincere. “I’d love to come,” she replied. I felt a wave of relief wash over me.
When May came to my house on Saturday, we greeted each other warmly. We spent the day talking and laughing. She talked a lot, and at that moment, I realized she was just a girl who wanted to be accepted. She told me about her love for basketball. I shared my interests in reading and drawing. We discovered we had a lot in common. From then on, we became good friends. I never thought it was my braid that helped us build a new friendship.

30 Which of the following describes the ecologist’s attitude to the study?
A. Supportive. B. Uncertain. C. Doubtful. D. Disappointed.
31. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A To request the government to make a difference.
B. To stress the influence of environmental problems.
C. To introduce a new technique in protecting koalas.
D. To make koalas’ living conditions known to more people.
D
B People need less time to understand Spanish.
C. More syllable words mean more information.
D. People speaking different languages communicate information at similar rates.
