I LOVE CHINESE!
David Brown is a 15-year-old boy from the UK. This summer he is studying Chinese in a summer camp in Gansu Province. This is what he told our interviewer.
What do you think of Gansu?
Well, I think it’s fantastic. Summer is the best season to visit Gansu. I enjoy the pleasant weather a lot. Gansu also has many pretty views with a long history.
Is there anything else you especially like about it?
Yes, the friendly people and delicious foods.
When we were in Tianshui City 3 days ago, we tried malatang, a traditional spicy hot pot dish. I like it a lot. Beef noodles and niangpizi are also my favorites. I haven’t tried huidouzi. But it seems very tasty.
Where are you staying in Gansu?
I’m staying with some very nice families in different cities in Gansu. That’s quite helpful for learning Chinese and experiencing the life and culture here. That’s why I’ve chosen home-stay.
Do you like learning Chinese?

There is no doubt that technology has had a big influence on our lives. People from all around the world can now talk to each other almost at once on mobile phones and the Internet. People can easily solve their problems with the help of computers and the world wide web. With this technology, it seems that the world is more connected now than ever before. Even so, there have been worries about technology making people feel lonely and disconnected from others around them.
So does this mean that technology makes us lonely?
In my opinion, it is hard to say Yes or No.
It’s true that humans need communication with each other. If we depend on technology too much to communicate, this can badly impact our mental (心理的) health. For me, technology is a tool. And just like any other kind of tool — like scissors, a pencil or a ruler, for example, it depends on how we use it: in a right way or in a right place. Take social media (社交媒体) as an example. If you only use it to compare yourself with others, you might feel sad and lonely. But if you use it as a tool to connect with friends and family or to start a new community to talk about your hobbies and interests, the loneliness will turn into love and friendship.
When you feel lonely after staring at your computer screen all day, maybe you can use that technology to reach out to a reliable (可靠的) friend and invite him or her out for lunch or a coffee.
6.According to the writer, technology is ________ .
A.a tool B.an influence
C.a pair of scissors D.a way of communication
7.What’s the meaning of the underlined word “impact” in Paqugraph 4?
A.帮助 B.促进 C.影响 D.进入
8.According to the passage, if people use technology too much, people may ________ .
A.sleep less B.live longer C.feel lonely D.get more jobs
9.When we use technology to________ others, we can find love and friendship.
A.argue with B.compete with C.connect with D.compare with
10.What’s the main idea of the passage?
A.Social media is important to us. B.Technology can be good and bad to us.
C.People need to communicate with each other. D.Computers and the Internet help us with our work.
Nobody wants to lose, but we must accept that losing is a part of life. After all, we can’t win all the time. However, we can learn something valuable from every failure(失败). This may help us succeed in the future. So we must know how to be a good loser.
We must not be afraid of losing. When we lose, just take it with a smile and look on the bright side of it. Failure can’t be avoided in our life. Edison failed 10,000 times before he invented the light bulb(灯泡). When he was asked how he felt, he said that he hadn’t failed 10,000 times but had learned 10,000 things which didn’t work. We must know that history is full of examples of men and women who achieved success although they failed many times.
Losing is not very disgraceful. We must accept our failure and learn to take advantage of it. Remember that it can be helpful. Take action to walk out of it. When we lose, think about what we did and how we can improve. If someone else can help, we’ll be lucky enough. Maybe he or she has been through the same experience before. Many people enjoy helping others solve problems. This can save us a lot of time in learning how to avoid the same mistakes in the future.
We should face our failure when we lose. There is only one winner in every competition. Some win, while some lose. That is a usual way of life. If we offer our congratulations(祝贺)to the winners and share in their happiness, we won’t feel sorry for our failure.
In a word, being a good loser will help us to succeed in life. It might be painful at the beginning, but there are many advantages. Good losers set examples to us, and most importantly, they finally win.
11.What can we learn from every failure according to the text?
A.A way of life. B.A valuable thing. C.A general rule. D.A secret of success.
12.In the writer’s eyes, why did Edison achieve success?
A.He got help from others. B.He happened to make it.
C.He avoided possible mistakes. D.He saw the bright side of losing.
13.What does the underlined word “disgraceful” probably mean?
A.Bad. B.Personal. C.Dangerous. D.Interesting.
14.What does the writer advise the losers to do in a competition?
A.Express the regrets. B.Forget the failure.
C.Share in the winners’ enjoyment. D.Join in another competition.
15.What is the best title for the text?
A.Ideas about How to Avoid Mistakes B.Experience in Dealing with Problems
C.Advice on How to Be a Good Loser D.Advantages of both Success and Failure

China is the name of a country. But the word china also means porcelain (瓷器). I think porcelain is the symbol of China. Chinese people invented it, so China is called “the nation of porcelain”. Chinese porcelain is sold at home and abroad. It is so beautiful that all my family like it. I even have a Chinese porcelain vase (花瓶) in my bedroom.
Grace, France
In my eyes, chopsticks can stand for China. They are quite different from our tableware (餐具)—forks and knives. It is hard but fun for me to learn how to use chopsticks. I bought some beautiful chopsticks as gifts when I returned to France.
Joe, England
When I think of China, dumplings come into my mind. Families in China always get together and make dumplings during festivals. When my family visited China, I learned how to make dumplings from my Chinese friends. We talked and laughed. It was a wonderful experience.

It is commonly believed that children are too young to fully appreciate (欣赏) the experience and knowledge of their elders, while many think that old people don’t understand the young. But actually (事实上), both groups have a lot to learn from each other.
James Smith runs the Smith’s Care Home in my city. It is mainly an organization (机构) for serving the elderly. But not all of its visitors are old people. The home also includes a childcare center for pre-school kids. There is a playground in the care home, where the elderly can play with the kids. In this way, they can learn more about each other, and respect (尊重) and understand one another.
I suppose this is quite an interesting idea. For one thing, we live in a world where there are more and more old people. The world is facing this problem and its population ages. It will be important for young people to be able to understand and care for the elderly in the coming years.
Regretfully, my own grandparents weren’t around when I was little, as they had already passed away. I never got to learn what the world was like through their eyes, or what kinds of problems they might have faced when they were my age. To me, their lives will always be a mystery — hard to understand or explain.
However, I think I can still learn from other people of older generations (辈). I might find some of their ideas out of date, and they might believe that my generation’s way of thinking is strange or incorrect. But we can still learn from each other anyway.
21.What is special about the Smith’s Care Home?
A.It is only a childcare center actually.
B.The elderly look after kids carefully there.
C.It accepts both the elderly and pre-school kids.
22.In the writer’s opinion (观点),what problem is the world facing?
A.There are more and more old people.
B.The world’s population is dropping rapidly.
C.The world is short of care homes for old people.
23.What does the underlined word “mystery” mean in Paragraph 4?
A.笑话 B.悲剧 C.谜团
24.How does the writer develop his/her idea in this text?
A.By giving examples. B.By listing numbers. C.By raising questions.
25.What is the main purpose of the text?
A.To explain why the world’s population ages.
B.To encourage different generations to learn from each other.
C.To show that older generations’ ways of thinking are incorrect.
As language learners, it’s important to use dictionaries. Paper dictionaries are often great choices for us. They lead us to think in a more exact way. However, with the rapid development of the Internet, many websites and apps offer us information about the language we are learning, so some language learners like online dictionaries better. Here is what some students think of the two kinds of dictionaries.
Lin Tao, 14
I like to look up something in a paper dictionary better. Their explanations are so clear that I can understand them better. I don’t think some online dictionaries are believable. There are many incorrect usages which can make us confused.
Wang Lan, 15
If we are not good at memorizing English words, we can look up their meanings online very soon. It helps us finish reading the English articles more smoothly. If we are good language learners, we can always learn more in a shorter time with an online dictionary. It saves much time.
Meng Hao, 14
My paper dictionary is a great friend for me. Whenever I don’t know the meaning of a new word, I can learn it well by understanding the notes and the example sentences in the paper dictionary.
Tian Xiao, 13
I don’t like carrying a heavy dictionary wherever I go. It’s really convenient to learn a language with the help of an online dictionary. We don’t need to spend much time looking up new words. Using an online dictionary makes a more effective learner.

We shouldn’t spend all our money in one go. It’s important for us to have a budget (预算) . In other words, we need to think about how much money we have and what we really want to spend it on. Realizing that our pocket money can’t cover everything we want, we should make smart spending choices.
We should set a clear goal and watch our money grow. If we wish to own a new bicycle but can’t afford it, we can save our pocket money. How? Write down how much money we have in a notebook and watch it grow. After we have enough, we can buy that wonderful bicycle we’ve dreamed about! Reaching our goal will greatly satiate us.
We can talk with our parents about how money is used and where money goes. Do you know what a bank account (账户) is? If not, communicate with our parents. We can also go to the supermarket with our parents to experience how money is spent in the real world.
