Dear Ryan,
I hope this email finds you well. I have some thoughts on using AI for grading our English essays that I would like to share with you.
While I see the benefits of faster feedback, I am concerned about the accuracy and reliability of AI in understanding the subtle details of our writing. AI might miss implied meanings, humorous expressions, or the creativity in our essays, leading to incorrect evaluations. To address these concerns, I suggest only using AI as a supplementary tool. It can provide initial feedback on grammar, spelling, and basic structure, while you can review the content, coherence, and overall quality. This combined approach would ensure a more comprehensive and fair assessment.
Thank you for considering my perspective. I look forward to your feedback.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

Dear Ryan,
I hope this email finds you well. I am writing to share my thoughts on the idea of using Al technology to assist with grading our English essays.
I believe this is a promising approach that can provide us with more timely and consistent feedback on our writing. AI can analyze various aspects of our compositions, such as grammar, structure, and vocabulary usage, which can help us identify and correct our mistakes more effectively. However, I also think it would be beneficial if you could still provide some personalized feedback, especially on the content and creativity of our essays. These are areas where AI might not be as reliable, and your insights would be invaluable in helping us improve our writing skills.
Thank you for considering our opinions. I look forward to learning more about how AI will be integrated into our class.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

“Come on, Eileen. One more try.” I said. “This time I’ll hold your finger and show you how much pressure to use. Guess what, it took me a while to get the hang of swiping.” added I. I held her finger gently and her face lit up when the menu appeared. “I want a selfie with you. Show me how to use the camera!” My heart sank a bit, but she didn’t need a lot of help and we sent her friend Emily a photo of us both laughing. “I can’t wait to show everyone my new phone,” she said happily. “Thank you for your patience, Tom.” (99 words)
I was not feeling so hopeless any more now. Great-grandma’s spirit inspired me greatly. It occurred to me that if a 92-year-old lady could learn new skills, then so could I. I had no doubt that I would find something I liked even more. There must be a job out there for me somewhere and I was sure to find it. I headed home with a smile on my face and a whole lot of love for my amazing great-grandmother. My great-grandmother would always be a role model for me to learn from. (85 words)

Jim Johnson, a mail carrier, was an institution in the leafy Westmoreland, Westhaven and Westover
Hills neighborhoods, just north of downtown Wilmington, where he delivered much more than the mail.
He knew all the kids and their pets by name; he carried in the groceries; he took note of unlocked doors,
offered gardening advice, and taught more than a few young boys the art of the curveball. When he
wasn't doing all that, Jim was running across a checkerboard of green lawns(草坪) to ensure the local
postal service did not fall short of its daily promise.
Though the postal service is often disparaged now, the trust in local postal service lives on. In
many communities, that trust is won every day when life-saving medicine, greeting cards, social
security checks, college acceptance letters-even the bills-appear in mailboxes in front of the houses.
After more than three decades, Jim approached his final days on the job much like any other. He
drove a boxy postal truck to North DuPont Road for the first unofficial stop of the day. Butch, a dog
who belonged to one of the neighbors, was waiting just like every day before. And just like every day
before, he got into the jump seat and they were off. On the route, Jim and Butch had become
inseparable. Now, the dog and the mailman would ride off to retirement together. At every stop, Jim
accepted the parting good wishes of families that had become his own. There were tears and laughter,
and hugs filled with warm memories.
It's been 33 years since Jim left the route, but we are still reminded of the deep bond established
between community and letter carrier. That's what the postal service means to us.
4. What do we know about Jim Johnson from the first paragraph?
A. He's open-minded. B. He's sharp-eyed. C. He's warm-hearted. D. He's strong-willed.
5. What does the underlined word "disparaged" in paragraph 2 mean?
英语 共 8 页 第 页 3
A. Refused. B. Criticized. C. Investigated. D. Suspended.
6. What did Jim do besides daily delivery on his final days of work?
A. He drove Butch to its owner. B. He sent presents to his friends.
C. He prepared a retirement party. D. He said goodbye to the neighbors.
7. What is the author's purpose in writing the text?
A. To remember a respected mail carrier. B. To record an unforgettable experience.
C. To raise funds for the postal service. D. To call for harmony in the community.

That dinosaurs ate the mammals that ran beneath their feet is not in doubt. Now an extraordinary
fossil newly described in Scientific Reports, unearthed by a team led by Gang Han at Hainan
Vocational University of Science and Technology in China, shows that sometimes the tables were
turned.
The fossil-dated to about 125 million years ago, during the cretaceous period- was formed when a
flow of boiling volcanic mud swallowed two animals seemingly locked in a life-and death fight. The
one on top is a mammal. This animal is a herbivorous species closely related to the Triceratops (三角恐
龙). Animal interactions such as this are exceptionally rare in the fossil record.
One possibility is that the mammal was eating something already dead other than hunting live prey.
These days it is uncommon for small mammals to attack much larger animals. But it is not unheard of.
And Dr. Han and his colleagues point out that those mammals which eat dead bodies typically leave
toothmarks all over the bones of the animals. The dinosaur's remains show no such marks. There is also
a chance the fossil could be a fake. More and more convincing fakes have emerged, as this one
did-though Dr. Han and his colleagues argue that the complexly connected nature of the skeletons(骨路)
makes that unlikely, too.
Assuming it is genuine, the discovery serves as a reminder that not all dinosaurs were enormous
during the Cretaceous and not all mammals were tiny. From nose to tail, the dinosaur is just 1.2 meters
long. The mammal is a bit under half a meter in length. Despite being half the size, the mammal has
one paw firmly wrapped around one of its prey's limbs, and another pulling on its jaw. It is biting down
on the dinosaur's chest, and has ripped off two of its ribs. Before they were interrupted, it seems that the
mammal was winning.
8. Which idiom is closest in meaning to underlined part "the tables were turned" in paragraph 1?
A. The fittest survives. B. The hunters become hunted.
C. Fortune always favors the brave. D. The truth will always come to light.
9. Why does the author mention the "tooth mark" in paragraph 3?
A. To prove the fossil was fake. B. To show the forming of the fossil.
C. To illustrate the process of hunting. D. To suggest the dinosaur was hunted alive.
10. What makes Dr. Han think the fossil is genuine?
英语 共 8 页 第 页 4
A. The size of the fossil. B. The absence of fake fossils.
C. The complexity of the skeletons. D. The consistency of the opinions.
11. What is the function of the last paragraph?
A. It offers a cause. B. It highlights a solution.
C. It supports the conclusion. D. It provides a new discovery.
D
It's not easy being a customer service agent – particularly when those customers are so angry with
a product that they want to yell at you down the phone. That's why the Sonos, a maker of home-audio
systems, hired Sierra, an AI start-up, to provide it with a customer service program powered by
generative artificial intelligence (AI).
In recent years, the customer service industry has become famed for driving customers mad with
its use of technology. Because it is expensive for firms to use humans to solve their customers'
problems, they make the process as inefficient as possible by forcing you to press a extremely
confusing combination of numbers or chat with a bot that recites prepackaged responses.
Now entrepreneurs are betting that generative AI can make it all less awful. Unlike the former,
generative-AI bots(程序) do not echo routine responses to narrow questions. Instead, they create their
own responses informed by the firms' training materials and previous customer-service interactions.
That raises two tricky questions. Advocates for the technology say that customers will no longer
have to wait endlessly and point out that programs will be fluent in many languages and have
easier-to-understand accents than foreign call-center agents. Customers, though, are yet to be convinced:
64% of those surveyed by Gartner said they would prefer it if companies didn't use AI for customer
service, mostly because they worry it will make it even more difficult to reach a human. What is more,
generative-AI bots have a tendency to project complete confidence in their responses even when they
are wrong, which could cause chaos. Earlier this year Air Canada was forced to repay a customer who
was incorrectly promised a discount by the airline's AI chatbot.
A second question is what all this means for the call-centre agents. It is predicted that generative
AI would lead to a 20%-30% reduction in customer-service jobs by 2026. For now, Mr Goeller says
Clearsource is focused on using generative AI to help train its human agents. But he adds, "I would be
putting my head in the sand if I said AI wouldn't replace people.
12. How does generative AI differ from traditional customer service, according to the passage?
A. It is curious and multilingual. B. It is intelligent and interactive.
C. It is polite and communicative. D. It is cost-effective and welcoming.
13. Why do most customers favor service agents instead of generative AI?
A. They find it challenging to deal with.
B. They still value human-to-human contact.
C. They believe it will not fully deliver its promise.
英语 共 8 页 第 页 5
D. They worry about falling victim to its efficiency.
14. What can be inferred from the passage about generative AI in customer service?
A. It struggles to bridge the language gap.
B. It becomes the major concern for service agents.
C. It is only problematic in highly-regulated industry.
D. It completely removes human agents from service.
15. What is the writer's purpose of writing the passage?
A. To present the analysis of capabilities of AI.
B. To argue the AI's replacement of service agents.
C. To explore the impact of AI on customer service.
D. To promote the dominance of AI in customer service.

Most of the time, we human beings are so unwilling to change that we completely ignore its
beauty. I don’t get it, why? 16 I believe change is the most beautiful thing an individual can
seek after.
As people connect changes with something beneficial, we all claim to believe in change being
good, yet so many of us aggressively oppose it. And why? Because of familiarity. 17
Even for those of us who say we love change, it’s hard to accept and adapt. However, sometimes
change can be a frightening thing. There’s no denying that life is unpredictable and more often than
not, we’re forced to make a change we didn’t really prepare for or expect. We lose jobs, we lose
people, we move to another country or we find ourselves in unfavorable circumstances that we weren’t
taught how to handle. 18
Life is full of unavoidable changes. How can you develop personally and expect to stay in the
same place? 19 When you start growing, you’ll notice changes in your surroundings. You’ll
notice changes in your friends’ group. You’ll notice changes even in your preferences. Nothing stays
the same if you want to grow as an individual.
Even though change may be painful and so hard sometimes, it’s still better than the pain of feeling
powerless as you watch your dreams pass you by. Don’t be afraid of change. Embrace (拥抱) it with
open arms. 20 I genuinely believe that life is too short to stay in the same place or in the same
rigid mindset!
A.Not everyone can accompany you.
B.Where there’s growth, there’s change
C.Change can be scary but it can also be beautiful.
D.That’s not the only reasons you embrace changes.
英语 共 8 页 第 页 6
E.Look forward to new experiences and learn from those new stories.
F.These things force you to change what you weren’t ready to change.
G.Sometimes we’re convinced that knowing something well means it’s right.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My great-grandmother Eileen is fierce, loyal and strong and a bit of legend in her own lifetime,
which now stretches to 92 years. I should add that we’re not allowed call her Gran, because she says it
makes her feel old.
That summer, I lost my job and felt hopeless. One day, I paid a visit to her. She picked up a box
which she placed on the coffee table. “There you go,” she said. “You do know what you’re doing with
these things, don’t you?”
It was a new phone. Her current mobile was pretty ancient. I was amazed it was still going.
“Yes,” I said.
“Good. That’s why I ask you. You young people know more about such things than us oldies. You
can take it home with you and get it all set up,” she went on. “Then, when you bring it back, you can
show me how to use my new phone, such as getting on the Internet, sending e-mails and so on.” She
smiled so sweetly that I felt a surge of love for her.
I grabbed the box and stood up. Setting up the phone would be easy. It was teaching her how to
use it that may prove challenging. The following day I headed back to my great-grandmother’s with
the phone. “Here’s your phone. It’s all ready to use.”
For the next hour, I was busy setting up her passcode and fingerprint recognition, which she said
was like something out of James Bond.
She chose a picture for her screen and it was all going so well until I tried to show her how to
swipe(滑动屏幕). “What do you mean, swipe?” she asked. She was 92, I reminded myself. This had
been tiring for her.
She pressed at the up arrow and got angry when nothing happened. When I finally got her to swipe,
she didn’t put the right amount of pressure on and the menu slipped away. After what seemed like hours,
she threw the phone across the room and it landed on the sofa. “Take it away!” she howled. “I want my
old phone back!”
I picked up the phone and was about to leave to give her time to cool down when I realized I
didn’t want to go home when she was angry upset.
