When Tina Farr visits the year 2 classroom at her Oxford primary school, she can feel the changed atmosphere since play was put firmly back on the curriculum (课程). “The children come running up with things they have made. There is always a shop on the go so they will be pricing up something or finding change,” the headteacher says.
Play-based learning — letting children move around, make up games and explore within loosely guided activities — usually stops when they attend primary school. Lessons then become desk-based, focused on reading and writing.
Farr had long championed the value of play, working hard to bring it into breaktimes. “Teachers would recognise what we do and it doesn’t take any more planning than the standard approach.” With play-based learning in place for her year 1 and 2 children, Farr then looked at where else she could change any practices that weren’t working. “If a practice isn’t in line with healthy child development, why are we doing it?”
The school’s year 5 children — aged 9 and 10 — were struggling to sit still in a tight space so she removed all the furniture. “The impact was immediate and impressive. Children now choose where and how to learn. A class once struggling with attention is now calm and engaged.” A teacher noted: “Their self-regulation has improved greatly. They settle down to work much more readily.”
Farr believes the outdated system needs urgent change. “We have neuroscience (神经科学) tell us children learn through play.” In June the school sailed through its Ofsted inspection. “The inspector really understood our play-based learning.” Farr’s message is that her approach can be rolled out. “It’s blown my mind how engaged the children are. It’s phenomenal,” she says.
4. What change does Farr bring to her school?
A. Additional income. B. Flexible environments.
C. Upgraded equipment D. Diverse outdoor games.
5. Why did Farr decide to change other ineffective practices?
A. To reduce teachers’ workload. B. To enhance the school’s reputation.
C. To improve students’ academic results. D. To promote kids’ well-being and growth.
6. Which of the following can best describe Farr according to the last paragraph?
A. Firm and confident. B. Mild and cooperative.
C. Humble and grounded. D. Merciful and generous.
7. What message does the text mainly convey?
A. Actions speak louder than words. B. Keep your play clean until the last whistle.
C. All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. D. By learning to obey, you learn to command.

What will astronauts wear in 50 years? A brand-new spacesuit is being developed. Called the Exploration Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EEMU), the spacesuit protects astronauts from the tough environment of the lunar surface, which is different from that astronauts have been exploring in low Earth orbit.
Progress on the suit has been overshadowed “The EEMU represents the first new spacesuit NASA has developed in over 40 years,” George Nield, the associate administrator for commercial space transportation at the Federal Aviation Administration, said. “So far, it looks like things are on schedule.”
Nield outlined the agency’s plan to build five EEMU suits. One for design tests is almost done and should be completed in December. A second will be built for qualification testing and a third will be tested in orbit on the International Space Station. The final two will walk on the moon in 2024 on a mission called Artemis 3.
In addition to the main spacesuits, each astronaut will also require an internal cooling garment (衣服), and NASA has now completed the first prototype of that undergarment. The agency also needs to improve the backpack-like Portable Life Support System that astronauts carry to stay alive.
Meanwhile, NASA got a sense of how the new suit will perform on the moon by testing the design underwater. Underwater, astronauts can get a feel for moving around in a spacesuit and using the tools they will operate during a spacewalk, Lately, NASA has been using the pool to study movements like collecting moon rock and dust, navigating a ladder and planting a flag on the lunar surface.
8. What is the text mainly about?
A. What people will wear in the future.
B. How astronauts will walk on the moon.
C. NASA is developing a new spacesuit.
D. A spaceship will soon be sent to the moon.
9. What will the second suit be used for?
A. Design tests. B. Qualification testing.
C. Walking on the moon. D. Tests on the International Space Station.
10. What does the underlined word “prototype” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A. Pattern. B. Copy. C. Test. D. Design.
11. Why did scientists test the spacesuit underwater?
A. Because the spacesuit would feel lighter.
B. Because the result was clear to observe.
C. Because it was easy to carry out the tests.
D. Because it gave astronauts a feel of walking in a spacesuit.

Bathing in the sun has been considered a health hazard for at least four decades. It mainly comes from ultraviolet (UV) light, which the Sun emits alongside visible radiation. The risks UV poses are real, but a new research suggests it may be time to consider the benefits. According to a study published recently in Health and Place, increased UV exposure appears to make people significantly less likely to die of cardiovascular (心血管) disease as well as cancer.
To conduct their analysis, the researchers from the University of Edinburgh used data from over 360,000 people in the UK Biobank, a database. They identified two groups more likely to have high UV exposure: those who claimed to use sunbeds or sunlamps; and those living in sunnier locations. To check that their assumptions about the subjects’ UV exposure were correct, the scientists also looked at vitamin D levels in a subset of blood samples. As vitamin D is synthesised in the skin in the presence of certain forms of UV radiation, it is a reliable indicator of solar exposure.
Their analysis showed that sunbed-users were 23% less likely to die of cardiovascular disease, and 14% less likely to die of cancer, than non-users. Similar trends held depending on where people lived. Sunbed-users, in other words, lived an average of 48 days longer than non-users over the 15 years during which they were studied.
The exact mechanism whereby UV light might lengthen lives is unknown. The authors believe part of the explanation may lie in vitamin D’s competence in boosting the immune system and improving bone health. They also point to nitric oxide (NO,一氧化氮), a powerful blood-vessel widener capable of reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease. A prior research published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology showed that NO is released in skin cells that have moderate exposure to some UV radiation, and sunlight helps move it into the circulatory systems. But for now, experts agree the study is not a licence to stop wearing sun cream.
12. How does the author present the issue in the first paragraph?
A. By giving examples. B. By defining a concept.
C. By providing a long-held opinion. D. By making comparison.
13. What is employed to measure UV exposure?
A. The locations of living. B. The length of sunbathing.
C. The frequency of sunbathing. D. The level of vitamin D in blood.
14. Which mechanism is a possible way UV exposure lengthens life?
A. Reducing bone density. B. Moving the circulatory system.
C. Restricting the immune system. D. Releasing NO to widen blood vessels.
15. Which of the following is the best title for this article?
A. Sunbathing: Risking Our Skin. B. UV Exposure: Benefits or Not?
C. Sun Cream: A cure for UV Exposure. D. Vitamin D: A Way to Lengthen Lifespan?

Have you ever walked away from a conversation with the sinking feeling that you said too much? Not because you were impolite or inconsiderate — but because you tried to explain yourself to someone who didn’t really want to understand? ____16____
Over-explaining happens often in our daily lives. This behavior originated in early survival strategies. For those raised in emotionally unpredictable households, clarity may be a form of self-protection to prevent punishment or emotional fallout. ____17____ People who have ever undergone trauma tend to explain a lot to avoid conflict or rejection.
Regardless of origin, the pattern is the same: We spend unnecessary energy trying to justify our right to take up space, to say no, or to make choices others might not like. ____18____ Clear language like “I’ve made my decision,” and “Let’s shift the conversation,” can actually do the trick. These direct statements prioritize emotional honesty without over-disclosure. And they don’t leave space for negotiation where none is guaranteed.
____19____ You spend less of it in practicing, defending, or recovering, and you needn’t always react to others’ discomfort. You also start attracting a different kind of relationship. It is based not on performance or submission, but on mutual respect. ____20____ You begin healing the part of you that believed love had to be earned through explanation. The version of you who felt unsafe being misunderstood learns a new truth: Your worth was never conditional or dependent on being agreeable or persuasive.
A. If so, you are not alone.
B. But maybe the biggest shift is internal.
C. Like any behavioral change, this takes practice.
D. But it’s not impossible to rid ourselves of the trouble.
E. When you stop over-explaining, you reclaim emotional energy.
F. Have you ever explained to show your politeness and consideration?
G. Over-explaining can also come from the way our brain is wired by past experiences.

Grandma worked as a housewife all her life. For decades, she cooked, cleaned, and cared for everyone in the family. When her children grew up and moved away, the busy rhythm that had filled her days disappeared overnight. The house stayed spotless, yet strangely lifeless. She often stood by the window, watching people hurrying by, as if the whole world were moving forward while she stood still, unsure of where she truly belonged. To fill the long afternoons, she picked up her old hobby — knitting (织). Most afternoons, her needles clicked softly in the quiet house. She kept knitting sweaters for me, though I never wore them — as a member of the school hands-on club, I admired her superb skills, but they felt too old-fashioned compared with what I could buy online. Still, she never seemed to mind, smiling as she went on knitting.
One day, I noticed her constantly talking to her phone. I thought she was calling a friend, but guess what? She was livestreaming, showing people online how to knit a sweater! I couldn’t believe it! The technology itself seemed far beyond her. “Maybe I can still be useful,” she told me with a shy smile as she balanced her phone against a teacup for support.
However, the comments online were far from friendly. “Who would watch this?” someone wrote. “Go take a rest, Granny,” another added. I saw her hands tremble for a moment before she steadied them again.
I wanted to fire back, but was stopped by Grandma. “Even if only one person learns things from me, it’s worth it.” Still, a quiet sadness remained in her eyes. Each evening, she sat under the lamp, her needles clicking busily, her voice soft but determined as she livestreamed to a nearly empty audience. Watching her persistence, I felt both proud and helpless — I longed to ease her struggle, yet the right way to reach her seemed just beyond my grasp.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
Then an idea hit me — Grandma could join our hands-on club!

B 5. D 6. A 7. C

C 9. B 10. A 11. D

C 13. D 14. D 15. B

根据第一段中“Bathing in the sun has been considered a health hazard for at least four decades.(至少四十年来,晒太阳一直被认为是一种健康危害。)”
根据第二段中“To check that their assumptions about the subjects’ UV exposure were correct, the scientists also looked at vitamin D levels in a subset of blood samples. As vitamin D is synthesised in the skin in the presence of certain forms of UV radiation, it is a reliable indicator of solar exposure.(为了验证他们对受试者紫外线暴露的假设是否正确,科学家们还检查了一部分血液样本中的维生素D水平。由于维生素D是在某些形式的紫外线辐射存在的情况下在皮肤中合成的,因此它是太阳暴露的一个可靠指标。)”可知,通过血液中维生素D的水平来测量紫外线暴露。故选D。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段中“They also point to nitric oxide (NO,一氧化氮), a powerful blood-vessel widener capable of reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease. A prior research published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology showed that NO is released in skin cells that have moderate exposure to some UV radiation, and sunlight helps move it into the circulatory systems.(他们还指出一氧化氮(NO)是一种强大的血管扩张剂,能够降低心血管疾病的风险。发表在《皮肤病学研究杂志》上的一项先前研究表明,NO在皮肤细胞中释放,这些细胞受到一定程度的紫外线辐射,阳光有助于将其转移到循环系统。)”可知,释放一氧化氮扩张血管可能是紫外线暴露延长寿命的一种可能机制。故选D。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是根据第一段中“The risks UV poses are real, but a new research suggests it may be time to consider the benefits.(紫外线带来的风险是真实的,但一项新的研究表明,或许是时候考虑它的益处了。)”以及最后一段中“The exact mechanism whereby UV light might lengthen lives is unknown.(紫外线延长寿命的确切机制尚不清楚。)” B“UV Exposure: Benefits or Not?(紫外线暴露:有益还是有害?)”

A 17. G 18. D 19. E 20. B

根据前文“Have you ever walked away from a conversation with the sinking feeling that you said too much? Not because you were impolite or inconsiderate — but because you tried to explain yourself to someone who didn’t really want to understand? (你是否曾在一场对话后离开时,带着一种自己说得太多的不安感?不是因为你无礼或考虑不周——而是因为你试图向一个根本不想理解你的人解释自己?)”引出“过度解释”的话题,可知,此空需回应这种经历是否普遍。A选项“If so, you are not alone. (如果是这样,你并不孤单。)”中“if so”直接承接前文的设问场景,又自然过渡到下文“Over-explaining happens often in our daily life. (过度解释在日常生活中很常见。)”的论述,符合语境。故选A项。
根据前文“Over-explaining happens often in our daily lives. This behavior originated in early survival strategies. For those raised in emotionally unpredictable households, clarity may be a form of self-protection to prevent punishment or emotional fallout. (过度解释在日常生活中很常见。这种行为源于早期的生存策略。对于在情绪不稳定的家庭中长大的人来说,清晰的解释可能是一种自我保护方式,以防止惩罚或情绪波动。)”可知,前文已提及过度解释的一个起源(早期生存策略与家庭环境),此空需补充其他起源。G选项“Over-explaining can also come from the way our brain is wired by past experiences. (过度解释也可能源于过去经历塑造的我们的大脑思维模式。)”中“also”体现递进关系,补充了“过往经历”这一起源,符合语境。故选G项。
【18题详解】
根据前文“Regardless of origin, the pattern is the same: We spend unnecessary energy trying to justify our right to take up space, to say no, or to make choices others might not like. (无论起源如何,这种模式都是相同的:我们花费不必要的精力,试图证明自己有权利占据空间、说“不”或做出别人可能不喜欢的选择。)”可知,前文指出了过度解释的问题与负面影响,此空需转折并引出解决方法。D选项“But it’s not impossible to rid ourselves of the trouble. (但要摆脱这个困扰并非不可能。)”中“but”形成转折,打破前文“过度解释带来困扰”的负面氛围,“not impossible”传递出“可改变”的积极信号,自然引出后文“Clear language like “I’ve made my decision,” and “Let’s shift the conversation,” can actually do the trick. (像‘我已经做了决定’和‘我们换个话题吧’这样简洁的表达其实能解决问题。)”的具体方法,符合语境。故选D项。
【19题详解】
根据后文“You spend less of it in practicing, defending, or recovering, and you needn’t always react to others’ discomfort. (你会少花精力去练习、辩解或恢复,也不必总是对别人的不适做出反应。)”可知,后文描述的是“停止过度解释”后节省精力的好处,此空需总领该内容。E选项“When you stop over-explaining, you reclaim emotional energy. (当你停止过度解释时,你会重新获得情感能量。)”中“reclaim emotional energy”直接概括了后文“少花精力在辩解、恢复”的核心好处,符合语境。故选E项。
【20题详解】
根据前文“You also start attracting a different kind of relationship. It is based not on performance or submission, but on mutual respect. (你还会开始吸引一种不同类型的关系。这种关系不基于表现或顺从,而是基于相互尊重。)”及后文“You begin healing the part of you that believed love had to be earned through explanation. (你开始疗愈内心那个认为“爱需要通过解释来争取”的部分。)”可知,前文阐述的是停止过度解释带来的“外在关系”变化,后文说明内在变化,故此空需转折并深入到“内在”层面。B选项“But maybe the biggest shift is internal.

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;

Then an idea hit me — Grandma could join our hands-on club! The next week, she arrived with her basket of colorful yarn. As she started knitting, she chatted about her craft, her fingers dancing over the needles and yarn. My club friends crowded around, bursting with questions: “How do you make this pattern?” “Do you knit for kids?” Grandma smiled, pausing to demonstrate. Later, we helped her adjust the camera angle for clear close-ups, pick trendy background music, and provide youth-friendly sweater designs, making her livestream far more engaging.
With club friends’ help, Grandma soon became an Internet celebrity as “Knitting Granny”. Having attracted thousands of followers, she went on to showcase more patterns online. Comments changed from teasing to admiration: “I wish my grandma could teach me like this!” “So heartwarming!” She even sparked a trend called “warm fashion”, inspiring young people to knit family gifts and share stories of connection. No longer lonely, she found rhythm and purpose in life again. As I slipped on the sweater she had made for me, it struck me that Grandma hadn’t simply regained her place — she had redefined it.
