第一节
Dear Sir or Madam,
I’m Li Hua, a student from Xinhua school. I’m writing to apply to work as a part-time interpreter in your company.
I have a good command of spoken English, which enables me to communicate with others in English with great fluency. Moreover, I have won the first prize in an English speech contest held in our school and I was awarded the best singer in an English singing contest last month. The part-time job appeals to me a lot and I also wonder when I am supposed to work for your company if I am luckily chosen.
I will be more than grateful if I am given a chance. I am convinced that I will perfectly live up to your expectations. Looking forward to your early reply.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
第二节
George stared at the ground, thinking hard. That cap would make Ronny feel he really belonged to the fellow group. But he himself had longed for it so much. He bit his lower lips, with his hand tightly clutching the dollar. Ronny’s words constantly flashed through his mind. It hit him that he should do something nice for Ronny. He bent down and gave a shout, “Look! Look here!” They all crowded around. There almost hidden in the leaves was the unmistakable green of a dollar bill! Overwhelmingly excited and delighted, Ronny picked up the bill. “Come on!” someone shouted, and they then made a dash for the store. “Why not come together and get something else with your dollar?” Beth asked George.
Forcing a smile, George showed Beth the empty pocket. Eyes wide open, Beth uttered in surprise, “George, you didn’t really find Ronny’s dollar. It was yours.” George nodded, a broad smile flickering across his face. He explained in a calm tone that the baseball cap mattered a lot more to Ronny. With the cap, he thought, Ronny would feel it easier to fit in with others. After knowing what her brother had done, Beth felt a flush of pride flooding over her. And not far away from them, Ronny was among the group of boys, wearing his new cap. The look on his face made George feel good-very good. The one dollar had traded what he thought was more than a cap.

根据文章第一段““A beautiful field of flowers can be a rather noisy place. It’s just that we can’t hear the sounds.” Scientists at Tel Aviv University have conducted a six-year experiment, proving that plants make noise in certain stressful situations.(“一片美丽的花田可能是一个相当嘈杂的地方。只是我们听不到声音。”特拉维夫大学的科学家们进行了一项为期六年的实验,证明植物在某些紧张的情况下会发出声音。)”以及第二段“Plants produce a high frequency (频率) clicking sound, and when short of water, or damaged, the clicks become far more regular. They also made different sounds, depending on whether they were thirsty or injured. “Each plant and each type of stress is related to a specific sound,” said Professor Lilach Hadany, who led the research study.(植物会发出高频率的咔哒声,当缺水或受损时,咔哒声会变得更有规律。它们也会发出不同的声音,这取决于它们是口渴还是受伤。“每种植物和每种类型的压力都与一种特定的声音有关,”领导这项研究的利拉克·哈达尼教授说。)”可知,这项为期六年的实验表明植物在有压力的情况下会发出有规律的声音。故选B。
29. 推理判断题。根据文章第三段“The researchers used an algorithm (算法) to separate the noises, successfully telling the difference between the sounds depending on whether they were dry or cut. The algorithm did this in a greenhouse setting which included far more surrounding sounds, but it was still able to recognize the particular cries for help of the plants.(研究人员使用了一种算法来分离噪音,成功地根据它们缺水还是受到切割来区分声音。该算法在温室环境中进行了这项工作,温室环境中有更多的周围声音,但它仍然能够识别出植物的特殊呼救声。)”可知,该算法用来分离噪音,辨别声音。故选D。
30. 细节理解题。根据文章最后一段“A study led by Reda Hassanien of China Agriculural University in Beijing years ago, also proved that plants reacted to sound waves, with some plants greatly increasing their yield. While evidence shows that plants can react to sounds, there’s no evidence today that they can actually hear them.(几年前,中国农业大学的Reda Hassanien领导的一项研究也证明了植物对声波的反应,一些植物的产量大大提高。虽然有证据表明植物可以对声音做出反应,但现在还没有证据表明它们真的能听到声音。)”可知,植物可以发出声音并对声波做出反应。故选C。
31. 主旨大意题。根据文章第一段““A beautiful field of flowers can be a rather noisy place. It’s just that we can’t hear the sounds.” Scientists at Tel Aviv University have conducted a six-year experiment, proving that plants make noise in certain stressful situations.(“一片美丽的花田可能是一个相当嘈杂的地方。
根据第一段“What once was forest today produces the corn that feeds people, cattle and, when made into ethanol(乙醇), cars.(昔日的森林如今变成了玉米地,可以供养人、养牛,在玉米制成乙醇后,还能为汽车提供燃料。)”和第二段中的“ Now, the nation’s airlines want to power their planes with corn, too.(现在,美国的航空公司也想用玉米为飞机提供燃料。)”
根据第三段“The airlines’ ambitious goal would likely require nearly doubling ethanol production, which airlines say, with great expectation, would decrease their greenhouse gas emissions. If they succeed, it could transform America’s Corn Belt, stimulating farmers and ethanol producers, but potentially further damaging one of the nation’s most important resources: groundwater.(航空公司雄心勃勃的目标可能需要将乙醇产量增加近一倍,航空公司满怀期望地表示,乙醇产量将减少温室气体排放。如果他们成功了,这可能会改变美国的玉米带, 农民和乙醇生产商,但可能会进一步损害美国最重要的资源之一:地下水。)”以及从该词后的 but可知, stimulating 和后文的“damaging one of the nation’s most important resources: groundwater.(损害美国最重要的资源之一:地下水)”构成转折关系,所以猜测 stimulating应表示“刺激”。故选B项。
根据文章第四段“Corn requires a lot of water to grow and it can take hundreds of gallons to produce a single gallon of ethanol. But as airlines take the idea of ethanol, the vital groundwater faces serious risks. (玉米的生长需要大量的水,而生产一加仑乙醇可能需要数百加仑的水。但随着航空公司采用乙醇的想法,重要的地下水面临着严重的风险。)”可知,燃料中乙醇使用增加的潜在风险是对地下水的压力更大。故选D项。
35. 细节理解题。根据文章最后一段“It pointed to a 2022 department study that concluded that the United States could significantly reduce pressure on groundwater by shifting fuel production away from water-intensive crops like corn, instead growing more crops that don’t require irrigation(灌溉), like various types of straw, grasses and trees. Hopefully, a better approach will be soon studied and adopted.(它指出,2022年国务院的一项研究得出结论,美国可以通过将燃料生产从玉米等耗水作物转向种植更多不需要灌溉的作物,如各种类型的秸秆、草和树木,来显著减轻地下水压力。希望不久将研究并采用一种更好的方法。)”可知,2022年的研究建议使用一些替代材料来生产燃料。故选B项。

W: Have you finished decorating your house yet?
M: No, I've only just finished the bathroom. It's taken such a long time. I've still got the kitchen and the living room to do.
Text 2
M: Okay, Madam. May I see your driver's licence, please?
W: What? Did I do anything wrong? I am wearing a seat belt. Oh, is it because one of my lights is out?
M: Madam, did you realize you were going 60 miles per hour in a 30 miles per hour zone?
Text 3
W: The movie doesn't start until later. I was thinking we could get some food first.
M: I'm not that hungry. I still need to get my mum a Christmas present. Maybe we could check out a few stores?
W: Sure. Let me just grab a snack before we go.
Text 4
M: Excuse me, do you have the book called Leading from the Library?
W: Yes. We have only one left in store. You can get a 10% discount for it.
M: Great. I'll take it.
Text 5
W: Henry, do you know Hafthor Julius Bjornsson?
M: Certainly. He played the character called The Mountain in my favourite TV series
Game of Thrones. He's very strong and big, so he's very impressive.
Text 6
M: Has it been a long tiring day, honey?
W: Yes. I can hardly keep my eyes open now. I started working at my computer at nine o'clock this morning and I don't think I looked away until five.
M: Really? No breaks at all?
W: Not one.
M: Well, you're home now. Just relax and have an early night.

W: Of course, I won't be walking there. Maybe taking the subway is the best choice.
Traffic can be pretty bad on the weekends, and it might be hard to find a parking space.
Right, Desmond?
M: Well, there are usually plenty of spots on Rickard Avenue, and that's just a 5-minute walk from the courts. So, I'll probably drive then.
W: So, do you want to meet for breakfast before the event begins?
M: Sure. I need to be at the park by 9:30 a.m., so let's meet one hour before that.
Text 8

M: You mean you have been accepted into the programme?
W: I sure have.
M: That's wonderful. You must be excited.
W: Excited but nervous. You know I have to work on some basic conversation skills.
M: How much German can you understand?
W: Only a little now. But I'm going to take a special language class next month.
M: I wish I were as clever as you are at foreign languages. I would love to study abroad.
W: Then why don't you? The school has a lot of programmes that don't require the knowledge of a foreign language. You can have a try.
M: I thought all programmes required one to know a foreign language. Thank you for letting me know this.
Text 9
M: Hi, professor. I was hoping I could have a moment of your time if you're not too busy. I'm having some problems getting started on my paper and hoping you could give me some advice.
W: Sure. Can you remind me what your topic is?
M: The general topic I chose is beauty, but that's as far as I've got. I don't really know
where to go from there.
W: Yeah, that's much too large a topic. You really need to narrow it down in order to make it more accessible. Otherwise, you'll be writing a book.
M: Exactly. That's what I wanted to ask you about. I was hoping it would be possible for me to change topics. I'm really more interested in nature than beauty.
W: I'm afraid you have to stick to the assigned topic. Still, since you're interested in nature, then that certainly can be worked into your paper. We've talked about Hume before in class, right?
M: Oh yeah, he's the philosopher who wrote about where our ideas of beauty come from.
W: Exactly. I suggest you search for some information about him in the library and start from there.
M: Great. Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions, professor.
W: If there's anything else you need, please come to see me in my office at any time.
Text 10
Nicholas Sparks is an American author and storyteller whose books have consistently been turned into major Hollywood films. Although not all of his books were sold to Hollywood, all have been The New York Times best-sellers. He has sold over 97 million copies worldwide, with over 65 million of them within the United States alone. He lives with his family in North Carolina. He is also considered to be very generous with his money. In 2011, he created the Nicholas Sparks Foundation to make more opportunities available to children from poor families. His foundation, which he started with his wife, creates scholarships for children from low-income families in rural communities. Sparks has had a very successful career, and he owes that to education. "The education I received prepared me for the world I would be facing in the future," he said. Even though he is worth an estimated 75 million dollars or so, Sparks seems to live the values he presents in his books.

A
November is often overlooked as December approaches, but it’s an ideal time to arrange an escape from the dull skies of northern Europe. Here’s our pick of the best holiday destinations in November.
Vatnajökull, Iceland
Iceland’s name becomes increasingly accurate in November, as sub-zero temperatures arrive more frequently. This is the best time for tourists to enter into the heavenly world of ice caves—more accurately, glacier caves—as these changing holes need to be safely frozen before they can be explored.
Lanzarote, Canary Islands
Lanzarote provides an amazing break in November. The first week aside, there are few school holidays this month—a bonus for peace-seekers. With gardens designed by the famous Lanzarote architect César Manrique, Meliá Salinas is a big-name resort (度假胜地) with local style, set between two beaches.
Jackson Hole, Wyoming
During the winter, Jackson Hole is a wonderland of snow skiing, snowmobiling and ice- skating. If you’re looking for some fast-paced family fun, try the Alpine Slide, where you can slide down 2,500 feet of Snow King Mountain in a bobsled (雪车). No matter when you’re planning your trip, you should book early.
Vancouver Island, Canada
Part of British Columbia, Vancouver Island was originally the land of the Kwakwaka’ wakw, Nuu- chah-nulth and Coast Salish peoples. Today, the island is valuing the original cultures more and more. Planning means you can take your time seeking out activities that celebrate native people’s culture. Remember that you must order the ferries (渡船) from the mainland ahead of time.
21. Where would tourists preferring quiet destinations like to go?
A. Vatnajökull. B. Lanzarote. C. Jackson Hole. D. Vancouver Island.
22. What do the last two destinations have in common?
A. They need to book in advance. B. They have colourful cultures.
C. They are famous for snow sports. D. They are suitable for all the family.
23. Where is the text most probably taken from?
A. A coursebook. B. A survey report. C. A guidebook. D. A geographical paper.

Anantawan was born without most of his right forearm. The disability was a barrier to music when, in fifth grade, he said his music teacher wanted all the students to learn to play the recorder (竖笛).
Instead of giving up, Anantawan and his parents decided to find him a different instrument to explore his musical talent. “My family chose the violin because they thought it was the most beautiful instrument,” Anantawan saiD. They contacted the Toronto-area hospital near the family, asking them to create an adaptive cast (石膏) on his arm that would allow the then 10-year-old to hold the bow (琴弓).
A group of engineers worked alongside Anantawan to build a special device. With it, Anantawan could use the bow and use his shoulder to make the sound. “From the very first note that I was playing, I was really attracted to the sound and the connection of my body to the instrument and being able to express my imagination,” he said.
Although Anantawan is grateful for the technology that allows him and others with disabilities to find access to music, he said the most important part of access is the inclusive attitude of teachers, supporters and those who encourage young learners or musicians by telling them they can do anything.
Anantawan is working to provide that space for others. As an associate professor at the Berklee College of Music, Anantawan founded the Music Inclusion Ensemble, a group of students with disabilities that provide accommodations for musicians according to their needs. Anantawan hopes to inspire people without being defined only by the challenges they face as a result of their disability.
24. Why did Anantawan’s family get in touch with the hospital?
A. To find a man-made hand for him. B. To inspire him to learn to play the recorder.
C. To gain advice on adapting a violin. D. To add something to his right arm.
25. What does Anantawan think is the key to the disabled’s access to music?
A. Fair competition. B. Inclusive attitudes. C. Enough resources. D. Lasting cooperation.
26. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. Why Anantawan becomes active. B. Who Anantawan plays music with.
C. What Anantawan contributes his time to. D. How Anantawan lives in his free time.
27. Which of the following can best describe Anantawan?
A. Open-minded and sporty. B. Appreciative and kind.
C. Wealthy and humorous. D. Calm and lonely.
C
“A beautiful field of flowers can be a rather noisy place. It’s just that we can’t hear the sounds.” Scientists at Tel Aviv University have conducted a six-year experiment, proving that plants make noise in certain stressful situations.
Plants produce a high frequency (频率) clicking sound, and when short of water, or damaged, the clicks become far more regular. They also made different sounds, depending on whether they were thirsty or injured. “Each plant and each type of stress is related to a specific sound,” said Professor Lilach Hadany, who led the research study.
Focusing particularly on tomatoes, wheat and corn, the plants were placed in a soundproof (隔音的) room and recorded by microphones. Some plants were starved of water, others cut, and a control group was left undamaged. The researchers used an algorithm (算法) to separate the noises, successfully telling the difference between the sounds depending on whether they were dry or cut. The algorithm did this in a greenhouse setting which included far more surrounding sounds, but it was still able to recognize the particular cries for help of the plants.
On average, the human ear can hear sounds up to around 20kHz, while the sounds produced by plants are in the 40-80kHz region, far beyond our hearing. “The sounds made by plants can’t be heard by humans but can probably be heard by various animals, such as bats, mice and insects,” Hadany tells us. Though this has yet to be proven, it’s possible that these creatures use this information to choose which plants to eat.
A study led by Reda Hassanien of China Agricultural University in Beijing years ago, also proved that plants reacted to sound waves, with some plants greatly increasing their yield. While evidence shows that plants can react to sounds, there’s no evidence today that they can actually hear them.
28. What can we know from the six-year experiment?
A. Plants of different types make the sound of the same frequency.
B. Plants produce more regular sound in certain stressful situations.
C. Plants make sounds with a much lower frequency when stressed.
D. Plants make the sound of the same frequency whatever the situation.
29. What is the algorithm used for in the research?
A. To record the sounds. B. To control the sounds.
C. To produce the sounds. D. To identify the sounds.
30. What has been proven by scientists according to the passage?
A. Plants can hear each other’s cry for help.
B. Animals can hear the sounds made by plants.
C. Plants can make sounds and respond to sound waves.
D. Animals decide what to eat based on the sounds plants make.
31. Which of the following is the best title of the text?
A. Sounds That We Can’t Hear
B. Beautiful Songs from Plants
C. Plants React to Different Types of Stress
D. Plants Talk, Especially When Stressed
D
Vast lands of America are dominated by corn, nearly 100 macres of it, stretching from Ohio to the Dakotas. What once was forest today produces the corn that feeds people, cattle and, when made into ethanol (乙醇), cars.
Now, the nation’s airlines want to power their planes with corn, too. United Airlines signed a deal with a Nebraska ethanol company to buy enough sustainable fuel, to power 50,000 flights a year. The government could decide on its tax incentives (税收激励) for the industry as soon as December. “Mark my words, the next 20 years, corn farmers are going to provide 95% of all the sustainable airline fuel,” President Biden said in July.
The airlines’ ambitious goal would likely require nearly doubling ethanol production, which airlines say, with great expectation, would decrease their greenhouse gas emissions. If they succeed, it could transform America’s Corn Belt, stimulating farmers and ethanol producers, but potentially further damaging one of the nation’s most important resources: groundwater.
Corn requires a lot of water to grow and it can take hundreds of gallons to produce a single gallon of ethanol. But as airlines take the idea of ethanol, the vital groundwater faces serious risks. “We’re on track to massively increase water usage without any real sense of how sensitive our groundwater is,” said Jeffrey Broberg, who is concerned about groundwater in Minnesota, a major corn state.
The Department of Energy said in a statement that “water use is a critical part of the conversation surrounding bio-energy sustainability”. It pointed to a 2022 department study that concluded that the United States could significantly reduce pressure on groundwater by shifting fuel production away from water-intensive crops like corn, instead growing more crops that don’t require irrigation (灌溉), like various types of straw, grasses and trees. Hopefully, a better approach will be soon studied and adopted.
32. What can we learn from the first two paragraphs?
A. Farmers will increase 95% of their ethanol production.
B. The sustainable fuel will not be popular in the future.
C. Corn will be an influential source in the fuel industry.
D. The government stops the new fuel for the groundwater.
33. What does the underlined word “stimulating” mean in paragraph 3?
A. Preventing. B. Inspiring. C. Destroying. D. Impressing.
34. What is the potential risk of the increased use of ethanol in fuel?
A. The shortage of corn production. B. The increase in global warming.
C. A rise in clean-energy tax credits. D. Higher stress on the groundwater.
35. What did the 2022 study suggest according to the last paragraph?
A. Expand the corn planting area. B. Use some alternative materials.
C. Cut down the daily water usage. D. Turn to the government for help.

George was so excited he could hardly wait to get to the store. He walked so fast that his sister Beth had to run. “Do you have to hurry like that?” she puffed. On his way from school he had seen that baseball cap in Rogers’ store window. Only a dollar and this was the last cap! George had looked at the cap a long time. He wanted it more than anything. Every boy at school had one.
George thought of his piggy hank, into which he put every coin for running errands (差使) for his family and neighbors.
George raced home, not stopping for anything. He held the fat iron pig, opened it carefully, and poured out the coins. Ten...twenty...thirty...ninety cents. If only he had one more dime
Lost in thought, George stared out the window. “What’s wrong, George?” asked Mother George told about the money and the cap. “If you give me what you have, I’ll add a dime,” Mother said, handing him a dollar bill.
George jumped up. “Oh, thanks, Mom. That’s great!” George gave all his coins to Mother and took the dollar bill. And away went George and Beth to the store with the dollar bill in George’s pocket.
They turned the last comer. Ahead was a group of boys and girls, talking heatedly and looking down at the sidewalk.
One of the children was Ronny, a new boy who had been in this town only a short time. Ronny’s father had been sick, so there wasn’t much money for extras—like baseball cap.
“What’s the matter?” Beth asked, anxiously.
“It’s Ronny,” answered one of them. “He’s been working and finally saved up a whole dollar, and now it’s lost!”
George went over to Ronny.
“We’ll all help look. We’ll find it!”
“I was going to get that last cap in Rogers’ window. I wanted it a lot. With that cap, I could join them.” Ronny said slowly.
Suddenly George remembered how Ronny had watched the fellows playing baseball, his eyes lighting up eagerly as they shouted and ran.
