B An adventure-loving pet cat called Rayne Beau returned home to his owners in California after getting lost in Yellowstone National Park two months ago. His owners, Penny and Susanne Anguiano, took Rayne Beau to Yellowstone in June for the cat’s first trip to the forest. However, the holiday ended badly after Rayne Beau was shocked and ran into nearby trees. Though the Anguianos searched for four days, they were unable to find their lost pet, finally returning home to Salinas with heavy hearts. Despite heading home, Ms. Anguiano said she never lost hope she would find him and took a double rainbow she saw on the drive home as “a sign” that he would be OK. In August, the Anguianos received a surprise phone call from Rayne Beau’s microchip company to tell them their pet was safe and well at the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) in Roseville, California. The animal shelter was nearly 1,448 km from Yellowstone, and just 322 km away from their home. A woman who first saw Rayne Beau wandering the streets of the northern California city fed him until she managed to catch him on 3 August, taking him to the local SPCA. When Susanne picked him up the following day, she said: “I believe truly that he made that journey mostly on his own. His paws were really beat up, and he lost 40% of his body weight because of inadequate nutrition. He was not cared for.” It remains a mystery how Rayne Beau got to Roseville, and his owners are hoping the public may be able to fill in the blanks. Rayne Beau has now been fitted with a GPS global tracker in case of further misadventure. His owners say they will practise “camping in their driveway to get him used to it,” before hitting the road again. 24. How did Rayne Beau’s owners feel when heading home? A. Positive. B. Desperate. C. Settled. D. Touched. 25. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about? A. Rayne Beau’s way back on its own. B. The sighting of Rayne Beau at SPCA. C. The unexpected discovery of Rayne Beau. D. The finding of Rayne Beau in Yellowstone. 26. What does the underlined words “fill in the blanks” mean in paragraph 4? A. Give information. B. Conduct a survey. C. Shoulder responsibility. D. Launch a tracking device to it. 27. What is done to prevent Rayne Beau from missing again? A. Building up its courage. B. Fixing a tracking device to it. C. Familiarizing it with camping. D. Removing its painful memories. C It was a truth known to Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell back in 1968, but now scientists have caught up with them: there really are not nothing like the real thing. A study in the Netherlands has revealed that real works of art in a museum stimulate the brain in a way that is 10 times stronger than looking at a poster. The independent study used eye-tracking technology and MRI scans to record the brain activity of volunteers looking at genuine artworks and their reproductions. Scientists found the volunteers had a response that was 10 times stronger when looking at the former. The volunteers, aged between 21 and 65, were attached to a brain scanner and eye-tracking equipment and asked to look at five paintings in the museum, plus posters of them in the museum shop. “If you want to know what people think, it is better to measure it than to ask them,” the lead researcher of the study said. “The results were extraordinary.” The real artworks aroused a strong positive response in the precuneus, part of the brain involved with consciousness, self-reflection and personal memories, researchers said. Gerrit van Honthorst’s The Violin Player gave a positive stimulus of 0.41 out of 1 in real life, for instance, but just 0.05 in poster form. The research also analysed Girl with a Pearl Earring. The popular work attracted most overall attention and drew the eye in what researchers described as a “sustained attention loop” — a triangle between the girl’s highlighted eye, mouth and pearl earring. Erik Scherder, a professor in neuropsychology (神经心理学) invited to comment on the results, said the study underlined the importance of culture. “It shows what it does for your brain when you see a real artwork,” he said. “This is a rich environment that really makes a difference, particularly for children in the growth period.” 28. What did volunteers do during the study? A. Making creations. B. Observing paintings. C. Operating devices. D. Identifying originals. 29. Why do real artworks lead to a stronger stimulation? A. They are rich in details. B. They reflect cultural significance. C. They possess higher market value. D. They engage more deeply with the brain. 30. What can we infer from Erik Scherder’s words in the last paragraph? A. Children should be exposed to cultural differences. B. Artworks and posters form a diverse cultural setting. C. The value of artworks cannot be ignored in education. D. Posters are equally effective in helping brain development. 31. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. Reproductions Harm Innovations. B. Genuine Artworks Heal Mental Diseases. C. New Technology Assists Brain Activity Analysis. D. Real Art Stimulates Brain Much More than Reprints. D It is a classic problem for job seekers and anyone: If you brag (吹嘘) about your accomplishments, you seem more competent—but less likable. The solution? Add a bit of playfulness when discussing your talents. A team of researchers have found that “humorbragging”—referring to your accomplishments through a veil of humor—allows people to play up their skills without being described as vain. And that makes them more likely to get hired or get their opinions accepted. “The self-enhancing humor helps them be seen as confident without sacrificing likability” says Jieun Pai, an assistant professor at Imperial College London who led the research. The researchers used a series of studies to test the impact of what they called humorbragging. In one instance, they sent out two resumes to 345 companies—but one resume added a dash of self-promotional humor instead of being purely serious: “The more coffee you can provide, the more output I will produce.” The resume with the joke got an email or a callback by 156 companies, versus 125 for the other. In another case, the researchers found that study participants were more likely to hire chefs who are humorous when selling themselves. One chef described making a soccer-themed cake for a boy’s fifth-birthday party and mentioned that he got the biggest tip he had ever seen. A baker who was the hiring favorite told the same story, but ended up by saying, “I am just glad that I only had to make the soccer ball, not actually kick one.” “People need to be cautious, though, when using humor to sell themselves,” Pai says. Self-deprecating (自嘲式的) humor without any bragging at all, or humor intended to belittle others in any form, doesn’t have the same positive impact that humorous bragging does, according to the research. “We sometimes use self-deprecating humor, but that may lead to the opposite result that was intended,” she says. “It doesn’t help you be seen as more competent.” 32. What do we know about humorbragging? A. It lowers likability. B. It is favored by employers. C. It is a must for job seekers. D. It makes one appear overconfident. 33. Which aspect of humorbragging does the research team focus on? A. Various forms. B. Psychological causes. C. Beneficial effects. D. Practical applications. 34. What can we say about the two chefs from paragraph 4? A They expect the same salary. B. They differ in working experience. C. They specialize in different types of cakes. D. They adopt distinct ways of self-introduction. 35. Which example agrees with Pai’s advice on humorbragging? A. I’m a challenge addict—bring on the tough stuff! B. I’m an office clown, who always makes everyone laugh. C. I’m the master of the “almost got it”—close enough is good enough. D. I may not be the smartest person, but I’m surely smarter than the next guy! When it comes to being fit and healthy, most of us know by now that 10,000 steps is recommended everywhere as a target to achieve. ___36___ The 10,000 steps a day target seems to have come about from a trade name pedometer (计步器) sold in 1965 by Yamasa Clock in Japan. The device was called “Manpo-kei”, which translates to “10,000 steps meter”. This was a marketing tool for the device and has seemed to have stuck across the world as the daily step target. ___37___ But while some research has shown health benefits at 10,000 steps, recent research from Harvard Medical School has shown that, on average, approximately 4,400 steps a day is enough to significantly lower the risk of death in women. This was when compared to only walking around 2,700 steps daily. The more steps people walked, the lower their risk of dying was, before leveling off at around 7,500 steps a day. ___38___ Although it’s uncertain whether similar results would be seen in men, it’s one example of how moving a little bit more daily can improve health and lower risk of death. ___39___ One easy way to do that is to increase your current step count by about 2,000 steps a day. Other easy ways to move more daily include walking to work if possible, or taking part of an online exercise program if you’re working from home. ___40___ And given that even small amounts of physical activity positively impact your health, taking regular breaks to move around if you’re working at a desk all day will help to easily get more physical activity. A. No additional benefits were seen with more steps. B. Is walking 10,000 steps every day really necessary? C. But do you know where this number actually came from? D. There are several ways to increase steps or simply move more. E. It’s even included in daily activity targets by popular smart watches. F. The ways to improve our health lie in many aspects such as exercising more. G. Meeting with friends for a walk rather than in a cafe or pub can also be useful. In 2013, Kahn-Scolaro’s sister, Susan Kahn, was diagnosed with pancreatic (胰腺的) cancer. This year, our group’s experience was particularly unforgettable, not just for the final outcome, but for the voyage we set out on hand in hand. As the final week approached, panic set in. We had taken on a challenging project of building a complex robot model which we thought would be a surprise to the judges, but it seemed like everything was going wrong. Time was not on our side, we still had a lot to do, and mistakes were made along the way. The instructions were so confusing that we couldn’t make sense of them. To make matters worse, some of the essential parts appeared to be missing. It seemed as if the universe itself were plotting against us. The weight of looming failure pressed heavily on our shoulders. We were cross to complain or blame each other. Feeling defeated and frustrated (沮丧), four of us were on the edge of giving up. Just when all hope seemed lost, the group leader, Mary came to our rescue. She patiently sat down with us. “Hey, guys, cheer up! Time is limited, it’s impossible!” Lily murmured. “But I really thought we couldn’t do this. It’s impossible!” Lily murmured. “Don’t give up. Remember what Winston Churchill said, ‘Success is not final, failure is not fatal; it is the courage to continue that counts.’ We can do this.” “Yes. But great things never come easy,” Mary stood up, “We’ve come this far; we can’t quit now. We are a group, let’s work together and we can make it. Come on, my friends!” Her encouragements was like a ray of light in the darkness. The other five group members stood up one by one and said firmly, “You’re right. Let’s keep going.” “That’s the spirit! Together, we’ll overcome this challenge.” We put our hands together. With Mary’s leadership, we regained our confidence and started working together. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Finally, the day of the science fair arrived. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 2024-2025学年高二年级上学期期末考试 英语试题 本试卷共150分,考试时间为120分钟。 How much is the shirt? In Siberia. 19. What caused the wildfires in the Arctic? A. Strong winds. B. More lightning strikes. C. High temperatures. 20. What is the text mainly about? A. The Arctic fires. B. The habitat loss. C. The death of animals. A 18. B 19. C 20. W: Hundreds of huge wildfires have broken out all across the Arctic Circle. Areas in the Arctic are warming twice as fast as anywhere else on the planet. There are so many fires and they are so big that the smoke from them can be seen from space. Meteorologists report that the Arctic is having its hottest June ever and is suffering its worst wildfire season on record. There are huge blazes covering large areas of Greenland, Siberia, Scandinavia and Alaska. In Alaska, there are as many as 400 fires burning out of control. In Greenland, melting on the vast Greenland ice sheet has started a month earlier than usual. The World Meteorological Organization has said the Arctic fires are “unprecedented”. Scientists say the fires and suffocating smoke could have an effect on global warming. Meteorologist Mark Parrington explained what caused the wildfires. He said,” Temperatures in the Arctic have been increasing at a much faster rate than the global average, and warmer conditions encourage fires to grow and persist once they have been started.” Dry ground, more lightning strikes and strong winds have caused the fires to spread very quickly. A lot of ice has melted and the flames have set fire to methane — filled earth below the ice. This is releasing huge amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. The fires have also caused serious habitat loss and have killed uncountable numbers of animals. A NYC Rental Cars Taking a trip to New York City? When Susanne picked him up the following day she said: “I believe truly that he made that journey mostly on his own. A 25. C 26. A 27. 根据第二段“Despite heading home, Ms. Anguiano said she never lost hope she would find him and took a double rainbow she saw on the drive home as “a sign” that he would be OK. 故选A项。 根据第三段“In August, the Anguianos received a surprise phone call from Rayne Beau’s microchip company to tell them their pet was safe and well at the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) in Roseville, California. The animal shelter was nearly 1,448 km from Yellowstone, and just 322 km away from their home. A woman who first saw Rayne Beau wandering the streets of the northern California city fed him until she managed to catch him on 3 August, taking him to the local SPCA.(今年8月,Anguiano一家意外地接到了来自Rayne Beau的微芯片公司打来的电话,告诉他们,他们的宠物在加州罗斯维尔的防止虐待动物协会(SPCA)安然无恙。 根据划线部分上文“It remains a mystery how Rayne Beau got to Roseville, and his owners are hoping the public (Rayne Beau是如何来到罗斯维尔的仍然是个谜,他的主人希望公众……)” 故选A项。 根据最后一段“Rayne Beau has now been fitted with a GPS global tracker in case of further misadventure.(Rayne Beau现在已经安装了GPS全球追踪器,以防发生更多的不幸)”可知,为防止Rayne Beau再次失踪,给它装了个追踪装置。故选B项。 C It was a truth known to Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell back in 1968, but now scientists have caught up with them: there really are not nothing like the real thing. B 29. D 30. C 31. 根据文中第三段中“The volunteers, aged between 21 and 65, were attached to a brain scanner and eye-tracking equipment and asked to look at five paintings in the museum, plus posters of them in the museum shop. 根据文中第四段中“The real artworks aroused a strong positive response in the precuneus, part of the brain involved with consciousness, self-reflection and personal memories, researchers said. 根据文中最后一段中Erik Scherder所说的“This is a rich environment that really makes a difference, particularly for children in the growth period. 根据第一段中“A study in the Netherlands has revealed that real works of art in a museum stimulate the brain in a way that is 10 times stronger than looking at a poster. D。 D It is a classic problem for job seekers and anyone: If you brag (吹嘘) about your accomplishments, you seem more competent—but less likable. The solution? Add a bit of playfulness when discussing your talents. A team of researchers have found that “humorbragging”—referring to your accomplishments through a veil of humor—allows people to play up their skills without being described as vain. And that makes them more likely to get hired or get their opinions accepted. “The self-enhancing humor helps them be seen as confident without sacrificing likability,” says Jieun Pai, an assistant professor at Imperial College London who led the research. A. They expect the same salary. B 33. C 34. D 35. 根据第二段“A team of researchers have found that “humorbragging”—referring to your accomplishments through a veil of humor—allows people to play up their skills without being described as vain. And that makes them more likely to get hired or get their opinions accepted. 根据第三段“The researchers used a series of studies to test the impact of what they called humorbragging. In one instance, they sent out two resumes to 345 companies—but one resume added a dash of self-promotional humor instead of being purely serious: “The more coffee you can provide, the more output I will produce.” The resume with the joke got an email or a callback by 156 companies, versus 125 for the other. 根据第四段“A baker who was the hiring favorite told the same story, but ended up by saying, “I am just glad that I only had to make the soccer ball, not actually kick one.” 根据最后一段““People need to be cautious, though, when using humor to sell themselves,” Pai says. Self-deprecating (自嘲式的) humor without any bragging at all, or humor intended to belittle others in any form, doesn’t have the same positive impact that humorous bragging does, according to the research. 可知,Pai建议不要贬低自己或者贬低他人,否则会适得其反,选项A中的“I’m a challenge addict—bring on the tough stuff!”(我是挑战迷——越难的事情越好!) 故选A。 When it comes to being fit and healthy, most of us know by now that 10,000 steps is recommended everywhere as a target to achieve. C 37. E 38. A 39. D 40. 【36题详解】 前文“When it comes to being fit and healthy, most of us know by now that 10,000 steps is recommended everywhere as a target to achieve. (说到健美和健康,我们大多数人现在都知道,一万步是到处推荐的目标)”提到走一万步维持健康的目标,后文“The 10,000 steps a day target seems to have come about from a trade name pedometer (计步器) sold in 1965 by Yamasa Clock in Japan. (每天走一万步的目标似乎源自1965年日本Yamasa钟表公司推出的一款计步器的商品名)”说明这一目标的来源,因此C项“But do you know where this number actually came from? 【37题详解】 前文“This was a marketing tool for the device and has seemed to have stuck across the world as the daily step target. (这是该设备的一种营销工具,似乎已经成为全球各地的日常步数目标)”提到走一万步作为日常步数目标流行起来,因此E项“It’s even included in daily activity targets by popular smart watches. 【38题详解】 前文“The more steps people walked, the lower their risk of dying was, before leveling off at around 7,500 steps a day. 故选A。 【39题详解】 后文“One easy way to do that is to increase your current step count by about 2,000 steps a day. Other easy ways to move more daily include walking to work if possible, or taking part of an online exercise program if you’re working from home. 【40题详解】 “One easy way to do that is to increase your current step count by about 2,000 steps a day. Other easy ways to move more daily include walking to work if possible, or taking part of an online exercise program if you’re working from home. 其他简单的每天多运动的方法包括走路去上班,如果可能的话,或者如果你在家工作,参加一个在线锻炼项目)”介绍各种增加日常活动量的具体方法,因此G项“Meeting with friends for a walk rather than in a cafe or pub can also be useful. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】With Mary’s leadership, we regained our confidence and started working together. We went through the instructions step by step and sorted out the parts and organized them in a way that made sense. Each of us took on different tasks according to our strengths. Some of us were responsible for assembling the parts, while others focused on programming the robot. Tired as we felt, we put in long hours to make sure our project was completed on time. During that period, we remained positive and supportive. We corrected our mistakes and encouraged each other to keep going. Finally, the day of the science fair arrived. We were nervous but also proud of what we had accomplished. To our great surprise and delight, our robot model won the first prize. The whole group was overjoyed. We hugged each other, tears of joy streaming down our faces. We knew that it was our teamwork and mutual support that had led to this success. Mary smiled and said, "We did it together!” Everyone was filled with a sense of achievement. We understood that when we faced difficulties and helped each other, nothing was impossible. 1】Some of us were responsible for assembling the parts, while others focused on programming the robot.
