The world’s heaviest pumpkin, weighing 1,247 kg, was grown by an American called Travis Gienger. It weighs more than four polar bears (北极熊) put together. It can be used to make 687 pumpkin pies.
But do you really know pumpkins? Here are five things you may not know about pumpkins.
Pumpkins are not vegetables. They may not be juicy like an apple, but since pumpkins grow from a flowering plant, they are actually a kind of fruit from the squash or gourd (葫芦) family.
Pumpkins aren’t always yellow or orange. While known for their deep orange or yellow colour, they can also be green, red, white and blue. The reason why many pumpkins are orange is that they have carotenoids (类胡萝卜素), the same thing that gives carrots their orange colour.
There are many kinds of pumpkins. You may only see two or three different kinds of pumpkins in the supermarket, but there are about 45 kinds of pumpkins grown all over the world.
Pumpkins are one of the oldest domesticated plants (驯化植物). People have been growing pumpkins for thousands of years. The oldest pumpkin seeds (种子) ever found were discovered in Mexico and they date back to around 7000 BC. It is thought pumpkins came from North America and Central America.
It takes long time to grow a pumpkin. If you want to grow pumpkins at home, you need lots of patience (耐心) for this slow growing fruit. Once you have planted the seeds, it could take up to four months before the pumpkins are ready to pick.

I have visited many places. But the most unforgttable one was the trip to Mount Huangshan with my parents last summer vacation.
We climbed the mountain and enjoyed the beautiful scenery along the way. There were lots of strange rocks, sea of clouds and beautiful wild flowers. It was really tiring during the climbing, but we kept on climbing until the end. When we reached the top of the mountain and saw the amazing view, all the hard work was meaningful. We took a lot of photos and left many wonderful memories.
China is a country full of beautiful scenery and rich culture. I sincerely invite you to come to China and enjoy delicious food.
Best wishes!
Yours,
Li Hua

There was a carriage clock (旅行钟) in the earriage. This was the earliest kind of watch. A blacksmith’s (铁匠的) assistant (助手) happened to see the clock. He wanted to know what it was and asked the Englishman about it. “It is a carriage clock,” said the man. “This machine can tell the time, but it isn’t working now.”
The blacksmith’s assistant wanted to try to repair the clock, so the traveler handed it to him. The assistant was a very clever man, so it was easy for him to repair the clock. He even remembered how it was made. As soon as the traveler had gone on his way, he made a watch of exactly the same type (样式).

41. Which country grows the heaviest pumpkin in the world?

42. How many colors are there in pumpkins?
