She greeted me with a big yawn (哈欠). “Sorry, I didn’t sleep well last night. Two mosquitoes (蚊子) kept me up. I tried to catch them but had no luck. I hate them!” I showed a cartoon (on the right) to Wendy. She laughed. “That’s funny. Now my sleepiness is all gone! Who drew this?” “Xiao Lin, or Lin Dihuan,” I said. “I like his cartoons. They lift you up when you’re feeling down.” Xiao Lin loved painting from an early age. But his family was poor. Instead of getting a professional (专业的) art education, the boy taught himself to draw at the age of fourteen. He bought books and magazines from recycling centers and copied the pictures from them. He began drawing for magazines when he was in middle school. In college, Lin studied medicine at his father’s suggestion, but his love for art remained. After graduation, he chose to teach art instead of working as a doctor. Lin hasn’t let his medical studies go to waste, though. His knowledge about medicine often inspires (赋予灵感) new ideas for his artworks. Lin spends a lot of time drawing every day. While his funny cartoons have received widespread attention and inspired many, they are just a small part of his work. Lin’s drawings often cover traditional Chinese culture. Many people got to know him through his ink-and-brush paintings (水墨画) of China’s 24 Solar Terms (二十四节气). The artist has also used cartoons to introduce young people to ancient Chinese classics. As some of these works have been published and displayed in the West, they have also made foreigners interested in Chinese culture. No matter what Lin draws, you feel relaxed when you see it. Sometimes, we just need to turn to artworks like his for a different take on the world. Last night, I fought hard with a mosquito, and it ended in a draw (平局) — I lost sleep while it missed its meal. 14. What happened to Wendy after she looked at Lin’s cartoon? A. She felt even sleepier. B. She fell asleep quickly. C. She became wide awake. D. She decided to learn painting. 15. What did Lin do when he was fourteen years old? A. He learnt drawing by himself. B. He copied online cartoons. C. He practised drawing with artists. D. He attended an art school. 16. According to paragraph 4, how do Lin’s drawings influence people? A. They inspire them to learn western culture. B. They help them to learn the Chinese language. C. They encourage them to visit Chinese schools. D. They make them curious about Chinese culture. 17. What would be the best title for the passage? A. A Close Look at Chinese Art B. A Comic Take on the World C. A Guide to Drawing Comics D. A Day in the Life of Lin 【答案】14. C 15. A 16. D 17. 根据“That’s funny. Now my sleepiness is all gone!” 根据“Instead of getting a professional (专业) art education, the boy taught himself to draw at the age of fourteen.” 故选A。 根据“As some of these works have been published and displayed in the West, they have also made foreigners interested in Chinese culture.” 根据“No matter what Lin draws, you feel relaxed when you see it. Sometimes, we just need to turn to artworks like his for a different take on the world.” B。 C Put on your 3D glasses and the dinosaur jumps off the screen. There are butterflies in the air around you. How does this happen? At a 3D movie, it seems that a red ball is jumping right at you. But the ball isn’t truly leaving the screen. What’s happening is that your brain and eyes work together to work out the ball’s size, color, shape, and movement. It looks real, but it’s an illusion! Our eyes are like video cameras. They notice every detail of the red ball and how it moves. At the same time, our brain (大脑) guesses what will happen next. That’s why we think the red ball is flying straight at us! But how do 3D movies make objects seem like they’re floating (飘浮) in the air? They trick our brains! Here’s how it works: the movie is filmed using two cameras with lenses (镜头) placed close to each other, just like our eyes. When the movie plays, these two pictures are shown on the screen at the same time. Each picture is a bit different from the other because each camera catches its own view. The two pictures overlap (重叠), and that’s why they look unclear without 3D glasses. This is where the special glasses come in. A 3D movie uses two kinds of light: horizontal (side-to-side) light and vertical (up-and-down) light. The glasses help your left eye see the picture using horizontal light and your right eye see the picture using vertical light. Then, your brain mixes the two pictures into one. That’s when the magic of 3D happens! With 3D glasses, the experience can be fun and exciting. Just remember that it’s all a clever trick to make you feel like you’re right there in the movie! 18. How does the writer start the passage? A. By telling a story. B. By listing some opinions. C. By showing a fact. D. By asking and answering. 19. What does the underlined word “illusion” in paragraph 2 mean? A. Something unreal. B. Something unusual. C. Something unclear. D. Something unpopular. 20. How does the magic of 3D happen? ①The brain mixes the two pictures into one. ②The two pictures are shown on the screen. ③The two pictures look unclear for overlapping. ④The movie is filmed using two cameras side by side. ⑤The 3D glasses help deal with the horizontal and vertical light. A. ③②④①⑤ B. ④②⑤③① C. ③①②④⑤ D. ④②③⑤① 21. In which part of a magazine can we read the passage? A. The Big Hits B. Movie Reviews C. The Superstars D. Secrets of Movies 【答案】18. C 19. A 20. D 21. 根据“Put on your 3D glasses and the dinosaur jumps off the screen. There are butterflies in the air around you.” 故选A。 根据第三段“Here’s how it works: the movie is filmed using two cameras with lenses (镜头) placed close to each other, just like our eyes”可知,④电影使用两个相邻的摄像头拍摄;“When the movie plays, these two pictures are shown on the screen at the same time.”②屏幕上播放两幅画面;“The two pictures overlap (重叠), and that’s why they look unclear without 3D glasses.”③画面重叠因此看起来模糊;“A 3D movie uses two kinds of light: horizontal (side-to-side) light and vertical (up-and-down) light.”⑤3D眼镜分别处理水平光线和垂直光线;“Then, your brain mixes the two pictures into one.”①大脑将两幅画面混合为一幅,这产生了3D魔法。 D。 D When Mom told me that she had bought tickets for the whole family, I started to wonder if I should have been honest about not being chosen to play in the show. They were so excited for me and everyone asked about it. I was unsure whether they would care as much if they knew I was only working behind the scenes. I liked stage crew (剧务), after all. No one could imagine how much I was in love with acting. I totally believed there was chance I would be the one who saved the show if somebody was absent. Once Susan missed rehearsal (彩排) for some reason and I volunteered to stand in and read her lines. The show day came. I woke up at a quarter to five. I had been so excited after the rehearsal the day before that I didn’t get any sleep at all. The lights and curtains (帷幕) the stage crew put up changed the gym (体育馆) into a real theater. Even though I didn’t have to wear theatrical makeup, I did anyway. The smell of the makeup paint was enough to throw me into another world. We had two shows that day, one in front of my schoolmates and one in the evening for the public. During the school show, someone threw a paper plane onto the stage (舞台), and the director had to stop the show and teach everyone about proper audience (观众) manners. Mr. Ellison said, “Live show is challenging. You just have to roll with it. You’ll get used to it. Make sure you’re here by six tonight, and tell the one you’re bringing to come early for good seats. We’re almost sold out.” My sister Diana dropped me off at 5:50 p.m.. The stage crew didn’t have to be there until 6:30, but I was excited, and I still hadn’t told my parents I wouldn’t be on stage. They could find it out when they saw the show — even mine behind the scenes helps make our dreams come true. I would deal with it then. (— Adapted from A New and Distant Star) 22. How did the writer’s family feel about the show? A. Worried. B. Excited. C. Surprised. D. Uninterested. 23. What did the stage crew do to make the gym look like a real theater? A. They put up lights and curtains. B. They guided actors for their show. C. They helped actors with their makeup. D. They sold tickets and helped audience. 24. What does the underlined phrase “roll with it” in paragraph 6 mean? A. Make quick decisions as you can. B. Overthink without finding ways. C. Accept the things as they come. D. Complain without taking action. 25. Which of the following opinions does the writer most agree with? A. Being on stage is a chance to shine and build your confidence. B. Honesty is the most important for a happy and healthy family. C. A gift for acting often comes with a very strong imagination. D. Every role plays a part in helping us reach our goals together. B 23. A 24. C 25. 根据第一段“They were so excited for me and everyone asked about it.” 根据第四段“The lights and curtains the stage crew put up changed the gym into a real theater.” 故选A。 根据第六段“Live show is challenging. You just have to roll with it. You’ll get used to it”可知,现场表演是很有挑战的。 根据最后一度“even mine behind the scenes helps make our dreams come true.” One of the most enjoyable things about the holiday season is spending time with family and friends. This is the column (栏目) where you can tell me what you would like to change about yourself. Welcome to leave your messages. Zhang Yao What I want to change about myself most is my attitude (态度) toward life. Sometimes, I take things too seriously. Once, I thought I did badly in an exam. I became very sad and lost confidence in any other exam. It turned out it was not as bad as I thought. I wish I could be happier about everything! 18 2 Li Jing I want to change my bad temper (脾气) most. I get angry too easily, and hurt the people I love. I really want to work on my temper and be kinder to the people I love. 15 5 Wang Di The only thing I am not pleased with about myself is my teeth. My front teeth are so big that they almost look like buckteeth (龅牙). When I take photos, I avoid giving big smiles. I am also afraid that my classmates will laugh at me. A. “Stop worrying about something that won’t happen.” B “Your kindness and talents matter more than appearance.” C. “Show love and respect to those who truly care about you.” D. “Try to support others and share happy moments with them.” B When I got to school this morning, I ran into Wendy. A They inspire them to learn western culture. A Day in the Life of Lin C Put on your 3D glasses and the dinosaur jumps off the screen. Secrets of Movies D When Mom told me that she had bought tickets for the whole family, I started to wonder if I should have been honest about not being chosen to play in the show. A.
