A
Riding a shared bike on the street, you might hear some people speaking Chinese aloud. Turning to the right, you see a Sichuan-style restaurant. After walking into a store, you see that Huawei smartphones are on sale. But you’re not in China—you’re in Manchester in Britain. In fact, you might see similar things in many other cities. Chinese products have been going all over the world.
Chinese food has been enjoyed in Western countries for a long time. To meet local people’s tastes, Chinese restaurants have made some changes to the dishes. “One example is the meat,” said Yin Hang, a Chinese student who is studying in Australia. “We like to eat meat with the bone (骨头) in, but people here don’t. So the local Chinese restaurants provide big pieces of meat without bones, even for fish.”
Some Chinese brands are also becoming more popular. It is reported that in many cities in Europe, many stores sell TCL televisions, Haier fridges and Lenovo computers. More than half of US—owned drones (无人机) are Chinese models. According to China Daily, they’re not only made in China, but also designed and developed in the country.
More and more people trust Chinese brands. “Made in China” becomes cool. “They are beautiful and offer something special that American phones don’t have,” an article on CNN once said about Chinese smartphones.
As it is said, Chinese government has been trying its best to improve its national brands of all kinds to meet the needs of modern life.

‘Made in China’ means quality (质量)
For a long time, “made in China” made people think of cheap, low-quality goods. China was just the world’s factory. But now Chinese brands are going global and being well-known.
Time magazine recently made a list of the 100 most influential companies in the world. Several Chinese companies were included, such as tech giants Alibaba, Huawei, Tencent, DJI(大疆), TikTok and DiDi Chuxing.
These companies are shaping the world with advanced (先进的) technology. Time reported that DJI holds 70 percent of the global drone market This year, it launched a new drone with a set of glasses that give users a first-person view of their drone’s flight. TikTok has become one of the most popular apps in the US with its never-ending stream of videos. Some 50 million US users spend an average of 46 minutes on it every day.
Chinese fashion has also attracted global consumers. In 2011, Chinese sneaker brands Feiyue, Huili and Li-Ning gained international attention. More recently, Shein has become one of the most popular Chinese fast fashion brands overseas. In 2020, its operating income reached over 10 billion dollars, an increase of 100 percent over the previous year, Global Times reported. Many European buyers say Shein is affordable, fashionable and of high quality.
In the future, Chinese brands will continue to develop. Thanks to a bigger market, improved supply chains and efficient manufacturing (高效的产能), “this is the best era for the development of local brands,” Yan Qiang, a partner with Beijing-based Hejun Consulting, told Global Times.

Xu, 30 years old, was born in Henan. At a young age, he moved to Guangdong with his parents. In 2016, Xu left his well-paid job. Then he started making videos about clothes. It was not a new thing for him. He worked in a clothes factory for four years after middle school.

32.What will come to people’s minds when we mention “made in China” in the past?

34.What’s DJI’s new drone like?
