The ability to predict (预言) the future is a rare talent. US author Isaac Asimov (1920-1992) was able to do exactly this.
Asimov was one of the greatest science fiction writers of his age. Back in 1983, he was asked to predict what the world would look like in 2019. Now that we’re here, let’s see what he got right.
Asimov thought computers would cause a revolution in the future that would be as big as the industrial revolution (工业革命) of the 19th century. Amazingly, he was correct. He also said that “mobile (可移动的) computerized objects” would be an important part of everyday life. Here, he correctly predicted the widespread use of smart phones and tablets (平板电脑). He also had a great deal to say about space exploration. The International Space Station and Tiangong Space Station proved his prediction that we would not simply visit space, but try to live there as well.
How was Asimov able to predict the future so well? Asimov taught himself to read at the age of 5. He read the newspapers and magazines that were sold in his parents’ candy store. He went on to study chemistry (化学) at Columbia University in New York. But he became bored with pure (纯粹的) lab science. Instead, he thought hard about the social change that can be caused by technology. He shared his ideas with the public through his books. He pictured what was coming around the corner for humanity (人性) in his works, such as in the Galactic Empire (《银河帝国》) series.
“His predictions are…fascinating,” Calum Chase, an English writer, told BBC News. “He was a genius.”
46. In what part of a newspaper could you read this passage?
A. Health. B. Science. C. People. D. Travel.
47. Which prediction did Asimov make?
A. All revolutions in the future would be caused by computers.
B. Smart phones and tablets would be popular among young people.
C. Humans will visit Mars as easily as taking trips on Earth one day.
D. Mobile computerized objects would be used in people’s everyday lives.
48. What does the underlined word “picture” mean in English?
A. draw B. describe C. read D. search
49. Which one is the best title for the passage?
A Technology flies out of our imagination B. Who let the cat out of the bag?
C. The death of a great leader D. How our dreams change our world

As the world’s number of bees has been falling in recent years, many countries and places are looking for methods to protect these lovely insects. The UK city of Leicester has its own plan in the works.
As part of a city-wide plan to be a greener city within the next 10 years, the city has begun to turn its traditional bus stops into what they are calling Living Roofs or Bee Bus Stops to attract bees and other insects. And they hope to complete all 479 bee-friendly bus shelters by 2022.
A Bee Bus Stop brings the city many advantages (优势), making it a happier and greener place for both animals and people to live in. Different from a traditional one, it has a small garden with flowers and grass on its top. Every bus stop will help support the city’s biodiversity (生物多样性) and collect rainwater that falls on the roof as well. “People are as excited as we are to see the first of Leicester’s Bee Bus Stops across the city taking shape,”says the City Mayor Adam Clarke.
Also, this new modern bus stop will be set with a solar panel (太阳能电池板), to provide lighting and energy for the bus stop below. Besides (除此之外), Bee Bus Stops will help reduce the urban heat island effect (热岛效应) by taking in some heat during the summer months. “The mix of solar power and living roofs is another step forward for our plan to make a greener city by 2030.” Clarke said.
The new bus stops are part of Leicester’s ongoing “Bee Roads” program, which started in 2017. Till now, over 5. 5 kilometers of roadside in the city has been planted with flowers to help make the city a safe place for insects.
50. The first paragraph was written mainly to ________.
A. share the bees’ problems B. show the writer’s interest
C. introduce the city plan D. call on us to protect insects
51. What does the underlined “it” in Paragraph 3 refer to?

Have you ever been afraid? Do thunder and lightning make your heart beat faster? Maybe your mouth goes dry when your teacher says you will be given a test, or your palms (手掌) sweat when it’s your turn to give your report in front of the class. Perhaps you get butterflies in your stomach when you see the bully (欺负人的人) who chooses you.
We all have fears sometimes. That’s true no matter how big we are or how brave we can be. Fear of getting too close to a campfire may save you from a bad burn. And fear of getting a bad grade on a test may make you study hard. Being nervous can also sharpen your senses and help you perform better during a track meet (田径运动会). Some people even enjoy being a little scared. That’s why they like to watch scary movies.
Usually, our bodies go into fight only when there is something to fear. However, sometimes this happens when there doesn’t seem to be anything to be frightened about. When you feel scared but there doesn’t seem to be a clear reason, that’s called anxiety (焦虑). For some kids, the feeling of anxiety or worry can happen at any time. For others, it might appear only at certain times, like when they are leaving their home or family to go somewhere. For some people, this feeling of anxiety happens almost all the time and gets in the way of what they want to do.
Tell your parents if your anxiety becomes strong and is getting in the way of what you want to do. Your parents can take you to a doctor, who can help to find out if a medical problem is making you feel anxious. But you can also try these ways to kill the feeling yourself.
54. What does the underlined phrase “get butterflies in your stomach” (Paragraph 1) probably mean?
A Get angry. B. Get nervous. C. Get hurt. D. Get excited.
55. What does the writer want to show in the second paragraph?
A. Brave people won’t feel fear whatever happens. B. Children are easier to show fear than adults.
C. Fear is a sign of being sick and unhealthy. D. Fear can be good to people sometimes.
56. According to the passage, we can learn that anxiety ________.
A. often appears before an important exam B. appears when people face some frightening things
C. can’t be treated once it begins D. sometimes doesn’t seem to have a clear reason
D
“I remember everything about it,” Scrooge said.
“Then it is strange that for so many years you have never thought about it,” the spirit said. They walked along the road, Scrooge recognizing every gate and tree, until a little town could be seen ahead with its bridge, church, and river. Some small horses came toward them with boys upon their backs, who called to other boys in carts, driven by farmers. All these boys were happy and shouted to each other until the fields were full of their laughter.
The boys came nearer, and as they came, Scrooge knew and called out their names. He felt so happy to see them all again.
“We’re now at the school,” said the spirit. “Only one child is there, left alone by the others.”
Scrooge knew who the child was, and he began to cry. They walked on and soon came to the school house. It seemed to be empty, and it needed to be repaired. They walked through the house until they came to a room that was empty except for a small boy sitting at a desk, reading. The spirit touched Scrooge on the arm and pointed to the boy. It was Scrooge when he was young. Scrooge sat down and cried as he looked at himself as he used to be.
Suddenly, a man wearing strange clothes stood outside the window. He was leading a horse.
“It’s Ali Baba!” Scrooge exclaimed excitedly. “It’s dear old, honest Ali Baba! Yes, yes, I remember. One Christmas, I was left here all alone, and the other boys had all gone to their homes. He did come, for the first time, just like that.”
Scrooge remembered how lonely he had been as a child. “Poor boy!” he said, and tears came into his eyes. “I wish,” he said, putting his hand in his pocket, and looking about him after drying his eyes, “but it’s too late now.”
“What do you wish?” asked the spirit.
“There was a boy singing a Christmas carol at my door last night. I should have given him something. That’s all.”

Besides (除此之外), Bee Bus Stops will help reduce the urban heat island effect (热岛效应) by taking in some heat during the summer months. “The mix of solar power and living roofs is another step forward for our plan to make a greener city by 2030.” Clarke said.

A. Get angry. B. Get nervous. C. Get hurt. D. Get excited.
55. What does the writer want to show in the second paragraph?

C. Fear is a sign of being sick and unhealthy. D. Fear can be good to people sometimes.
