Millions of people crowded onto trains, airplanes and buses across China last week. They were hurrying home, to be with their families for China's most important holiday, Chinese New Year. More than one billion people around the world are celebrating the New Year.
History Behind the Holiday
The Chinese New Year is celebrated at the second new moon after the winter solstice (冬至). According to an ancient legend, Buddha(佛祖) asked all the animals to meet him on Chinese New Year. 12 animals came, and Buddha named a year after each animal. The animals were: the mouse, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog and pig.
A Good Year to Be a Pig
Buddha announced that people born in each animal's year would have some of that animal's personality. If you were born in 1959, 1971, 1983 or 1995, you were born in the year of the Pig. People who were born in these years are believed to be polite, honest, hardworking and loyal. They are also supposed to be lucky, which is why many Chinese like to have babies in a Pig year. They are said to get along best with people born under the year of the Rabbit, Goat, Tiger, Dragon, Horse and Dog.
Festivals, Lions and Feasts
On Chinese New Year's Eve, the Chinese celebrate with fireworks, family gatherings, and feasts. One of the most popular ways to celebrate the holiday is the lion dance. The lion is regarded as a holy (神圣的) animal. During celebrations, dancers dressed as lions (or holding up paper lions in the air) perform to bring good luck to the people they visit at their homes or businesses. People often wear in red, which symbolizes fire. Legend has it that fire can drive away bad luck. The 15day New Year season is celebrated with firecrackers, dragon dances and visits to friends and relatives. The celebrations end with the Lantern Festival, when brightly colored lanterns are hung in parks around China.
21. Why do many parents want a baby born in a Pig year?
A. A pig is a gentle animal.
B. The baby would be friendly to others.
C. It would bring pride to its parents.
D. It is regarded as lucky.
22. People wear red clothes during the festival in order to ________.
A. look beautiful
B. get rid of bad luck
C. appear like a fire
D. suit the atmosphere of the festival
23. The Spring Festival ends with ________.
A. buying lanterns. B. lion dance. C. the Lantern Festival. D. fireworks.

Why do Chinese people love hot pot so much? As the winter months are coming in, more and more people are sitting around a table enjoying this kind of traditional meal. I find myself wondering what it is about this traditional meal, which has existed for more than 1, 000 years. What makes it a Chinese food favorite? It seems that the answer lies beyond the dish itself.
Hot pot isn’t just designed to keep you warm during the cold months; it’s also a social experience. It’s a “theater” cooked food that turns a meal into an event. There is a lot of fun for everyone to have in adding some foods to the hot pot.
Hot pot is eaten not less than two hours. For this reason, it is often considered an evening’s entertainment, and a time to spend with friends and families. However, many Westerners would be put off by the idea of other people sticking chopsticks in their food. When we come to eat at the table in the UK, we often have our own shares, although the experience is still a social one.
A similar experience to the hot pot can be found in Korean barbecue restaurants, which let you cook your own meat. This allows people to have their meat done however they want.
For most Westerners, the idea of going to a restaurant to cook their own food is very strange. But having a go, I find it’s now one of my favorite meals in Beijing. The steam from the pot left my clothes smelling of food when I got home, but perhaps this was also part of the experience. When the cold wind is blowing outside, I am sitting around with my good friends, eating and drinking. For me it’s like a dinner party where my taste buds (味蕾) and my appetite are equally satisfied in the warm company of friends.
24. What is the main reason why hot pot is popular in China?
A. It has a history of over 1, 000 years.
B. It is a fun social experience.
C. It serves people with many kinds of foods.
D. It keeps people very warm in winter.
25. How long do people spend in enjoying the traditional meal?
A. More than three hours.
B. less than two hours.
C. at least two hours.
D. All the evening.
26. We can conclude from the article that British people generally ________.
A. enjoy cooking their own food in restaurants
B. prefer a Korean barbecue to Chinese hot pot
C. don’t like sharing food with others in restaurants
D. don’t mind the smell of food staying on their clothes
27. What is the author’s attitude to hot pot?
A. Serious. B. Unconcerned. C. Humorous. D. Appreciative.

Food sometimes gets poisoned(中毒) with harmful things. A person who eats such food can get an illness called food poisoning. Food poisoning is usually not serious, but some types are deadly. The symptoms of food poisoning usually begin within hours of eating the poisoned food. Fever is one of the most common symptoms.
Certain microorganisms(微生物) cause most types of food poisoning. Bacteria and other microorganisms can poison eggs, meat, vegetables, and many other foods. After entering the body, these tiny living things release(释放) poisons that make people sick.
Some chemicals(化合物) can also cause food poisoning. They are often added to food while it is being grown, processed, or prepared. For example, many farmers spray chemicals on crops to kill weeds and insects. Some people may have a bad reaction to those chemicals when they eat the crops.
Some plants and animals contain natural poisons that are harmful to people. These include certain kinds of seafood, grains, nuts, seeds, beans, and mushrooms.
When people handle food properly, the risk of food poisoning is very small. Microorganisms multiply rapidly in dirty places and in warm temperatures. This means that people should never touch food with dirty hands or put food on unwashed surfaces. Food should be kept in a refrigerator to stop microorganisms from growing. Meat needs to be cooked thoroughly to kill any dangerous microorganisms. People should also wash food covered with chemicals before eating it. Finally, people should not eat wild mushrooms or other foods that grow in the wild. Some of these foods may contain natural materials that are poisonous to humans. In addition, some types of fish can be poisonous.
Most people recover from food poisoning after a few day of resting and drinking extra water. If people eat natural poisons, they must go to the hospital right away to have their stomachs emptied.

As I inch closer to my sixth decade, I can’t help but reflect on my life’s journey.
My path has taken many twists and turns, as it does for most, and I am grateful for each chapter and all the characters who were a part of my script. Through all the seasons, hills and valleys, I have grown in all areas of life and as a human being in general.
My husband and I have always wanted to retire near the ocean. We are active and love the outdoors. Finally, we were getting closer to our goal. I had put in my final years for retirement at MES, the wonderful school I spent the majority of my teaching career. I had three years left, but with Illinois’ bad weather, I had it in my mind to get us to Florida sooner than expected.
Our son is stationed at Hurlburt Field near Destin, Florida, and after visiting him there, we fell in love with the pretty coast. The salt air, heat, and humidity did my sinuses (鼻窦) and body good. I was back to running daily and did not once suffer from knee pain or sinus issues during our time there. We discussed it when we returned to Illinois, and I decided to act. I applied for teaching jobs in the Destin area.
Fortunately, I landed a teaching job at a great school and left MES. We put our house up for sale and were looking forward to this next adventure.
I moved to Florida in late July to start my next chapter while my husband stayed back to wrap things up.
I got into my new school on Aug. 1st and began preparing to move from teaching seventh to fourth graders.
However, back home, we weren’t selling our house. Besides, we couldn’t find housing in Florida. After much discussion, we decided the timing wasn’t right because of many unforeseen factors, so I packed up and drove back to Illinois.

Dear Smith,
How’s everything going? Knowing that you are fascinated by my hometown, I am extremely delighted to extend an invitation to you to pay a visit to it. Here are some details concerning it.
Located in the eastern part of Hainan province, my hometown, Wanning, is a small city surrounded by seas, with mild and pleasant weather. There is a national park in our city, where a crowd of rolling hills expand further, dotted with sheep and cattle grazing grass leisurely. My hometown is also famous for its delicious sea food. Once you have a taste of it, you will never forget it.
Welcome to my hometown. I would be more than glad to be your guide to show you around.
Yours Sincerely,
