You can transform yourself and live a better life by making positive changes along the way. Here are some choices that will lead to your transformation. Choose to change bad habits. Some bad habits seem to exist without us realizing it. Make the choice today so that you won’t be ruled by them. You can overcome them, find better alternatives, and become a better you through your struggle! Do it for yourself more than anything. Choose to grow. It’s easy to get stuck in a fixed way of life. However, with a reevaluation and growth comes a beautiful freedom. In choosing to grow, you build your character, develop your strengths, become aware of what needs improvement, and turn into the well-rounded person you need to be to succeed. Choose to seek a balanced life. Where do you need balance? Are you all work and no play? Or the opposite? Neither extreme will lead you to a pleasant life for very long. If you spend too much time working or lock yourself away alone, find the time for social interaction and having fun. If you haven’t been committed to a schedule in a while, make the decision to start following one. Choose to spend time with those you love. This is vital to human existence. We need the loving bonds created by family members and friends. Personal relationships are key to emotional growth and social stability. Choose to live passionately. Whatever your dream is, you can have it. The person you wish to be and the things you wish to achieve are within you. Make the choice to pursue those passions at whatever cost. It may mean clearing out your schedule or doing something you’ve never done. However, the reward from success and personal accomplishment will be worth it. 36. To discuss the importance of personal relationships. D. To describe the benefits of a balanced lifestyle. 37. What does the author imply about overcoming bad habits? A. It requires a sudden, dramatic change in behavior. B. It is a process that happens without conscious effort. C. It can be achieved through deliberate choice and effort. D. It is impossible if one does not have external help. 38. What is meant by “Choose to grow” in the passage? A. To stay in a fixed routine and avoid change. B. To pursue growth and self-improvement. C. To focus on work and ignore social activities. D. To become someone you don’t want to be. 39. What might be the consequence of not having a balanced life? A. Personal relationships will become stronger. B. Professional success will be guaranteed. C. Enjoyment of a happy life may not last. D. Social stability will be enhanced. 40. What does the author suggest as a necessary action for personal accomplishment? A. Following a strict schedule without any breaks. B. Living a peaceful life without any challenges. C. Avoiding social interactions and focusing on work. D. Opening up your calendar to pursue passions. B Plants can’t communicate by moving or making sounds, as most animals do. Instead, plants produce volatile compounds (挥发性化合物), chemicals that easily-change from a liquid to a gas. A flower’s sweet smell, for example, comes from volatile compounds that the plant produces to attract insects such as bugs and bees. Plants can also detect volatile compounds produced by other plants. A tree under attack by hungry insects, for instance, may give off volatile compounds that let other trees know about the attack. In response, the other trees may send off chemicals to keep the bugs away — or even chemicals that attract the bugs’ natural enemies. Now scientists have created a quick way to understand what plants are saying: a chemical sensor called an electronic nose. The “e-nose” can tell compounds that crop plants make when they’re attacked. Scientists say the e-nose could help quickly detect whether plants are being eaten by insects. But today the only way to detect such insects is to visually inspect individual plants. This is a challenging task for managers of greenhouses, enclosed gardens that can house thousands of plants. The research team worked with an e-nose that — recognizes volatile compounds. Inside the device, 13 sensors chemically react with volatile compounds. Based on these interactions, the e-nose gives off electronic signals that the scientists analyze using computer software. To test the nose, the team presented it with healthy leaves from cucumber, pepper and tomato plants, all common greenhouse crops. Then the scientists collected samples of air around damaged leaves from each type of crop. These plants had been damaged by insects, or by scientists who made holes in the leaves with a hole punch (打孔器). The e-nose, it turns out, could identify healthy cucumber, pepper and tomato plants based on the volatile compounds they produce. It could also identify tomato leaves that had been damaged. But even more impressive, the device could tell which type of damage — by insects or with a hole punch — had been done to the tomato leaves. With some fine tuning, a device like the e-nose could one day be used in greenhouses to quickly spot harmful bugs, the researchers say. A device like this could also be used to identify fruits that are perfectly ripe and ready to pick and eat, says Natalia Dudareve, a biochemist at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind. who studies smells of flowers and plants. Hopefully, scientists believe, the device could bring large benefits to greenhouse managers in the near future. 41. We learn from the text that plants communicate with each other by ________. A. making some sounds B. waving their leaves C. producing some chemicals D. sending out electronic signals 42. What did the scientists do to find out if the e-nose worked? A. They presented it with all common crops. B. They fixed 13 sensors inside the device. C. They collected samples from various damaged leaves.. D. They conducted tests on damaged and healthy leaves. 43. How do the sensors inside the e-nose play their part in its operation? A. By creating volatile compounds for analysis. B. Via a process of data interpretation and analysis. C. Through chemical interactions with the compounds present. D. By emitting signals that correspond to the type of plant material. 44. According to the writer, the most amazing thing about the e-nose is that it can ________. A. pick out ripe fruits B. detect the insects quickly C. recognize unhealthy tomato leaves D. distinguish different damages to the leaves 45. We can infer from the last paragraph that the e-nose ________. A. is unable to tell the smell of flowers B. is not yet used in greenhouses C. is designed by scientists at Purdue D. is helpful in killing harmful insects C One might expect that the evergrowing demands of the tourist trade would bring nothing but good for the countries that receive the holidaymakers. Indeed, a rosy picture is painted for the longterm future of the holiday industry. Every month sees the building of a new hotel somewhere. And every month another rockbound Pacific island is advertised as the ‘last paradise(天堂) on earth’. However, the scale and speed of this growth seem set to destroy the very things tourists want to enjoy. In those countries where there was a rush to make quick money out of seaside holidays, overcrowded beaches and the concrete jungles of endless hotels have begun to lose their appeal. Those countries with little experience of tourism can suffer most. In recent years, Nepal set out to attract foreign visitors to fund developments in health and education. Its forests, full of wildlife and rare flowers, were offered to tourists as one more untouched paradise. In fact, the nature all too soon felt the effects of thousands of holidaymakers traveling through the forest land. Ancient tracks became major routes for the walkers, with the consequent exploitation of precious trees and plants. Not only can the environment of a country suffer from the sudden growth of tourism. The people as well rapidly feel its effects. Farmland makes way for hotels, roads and airports; the old way of life goes. The onetime farmer is now the servant of some multinational organization; he is no longer his own master. Once it was his back that bore the pain; now it is his smile that is exploited. No doubt he wonders whether he wasn't happier in his village working his own land. Thankfully, the tourist industry is waking up to the responsibilities it has towards those countries that receive its customers. The protection of wildlife and the creation of national parks go hand in hand with tourist development and in fact obtain financial support from tourist companies. At the same time, tourists are being encouraged to respect not only the countryside they visit but also its people. The way tourism is handled in the next ten years will decide its fate and that of the countries we all want to visit. Their needs and problems are more important than those of the tourist companies. Increased understanding in planning worldwide tourism can preserve the market for these companies. If not, in a few years' time the very things that attract tourists now may well have been destroyed. 46. What does the author indicate in the last sentence of Paragraph 1? A. The Pacific island is a paradise. B. The Pacific island is worth visiting. C. The advertisement is not convincing. D. The advertisement is not impressive. 47. The example of Nepal is used to suggest ________. A. its natural resources are untouched B. its forests are exploited for farmland C. it develops well in health and education D. it suffers from the heavy flow of tourists 48. What can we learn about the farmers from Paragraph 4? A. They are happy to work their own lands. B. They have to please the tourists for a living. C. They have to struggle for their independence. D. They are proud of working in multinational organizations. 49. Which of the following determines the future of tourism? A. The number of tourists. B. The improvement of services. C. The promotion of new products. D. The management of tourism. 50. The author's attitude towards the development of the tourist industry is ________. What started as one man’s effort at age 23 to clean up the Mississippi River, has evolved into a cultural movement that had resulted in over 8 million pounds of garbage being cleaned out of America’s rivers. The enthusiasm and leadership skills that Chad possesses have inspired more than 70,000 people to volunteer their time and resources. Growing up in Hampton, Illinois with the Mississippi River in his backyard, Chad has always loved the water. His family spent the majority of their time on, in and around the river. Chad’s first jobs were on the river as a commercial div er and fisherman. Working on the river gave Chad a first-hand and close-up look at the shores where there was poisonous trash here and there. At age 17, Chad began calling government agencies to tell them about the problem. None of his calls resulted in government action and the trash problem seemed to be escalating every year. Chad decided that it was up to him to make a difference and clean the rivers. At age 23, Chad founded Living Lands & Waters, a not-for-profit organization aimed at preserving rivers in America. Chad worked tirelessly and called businesses to ask for an appointment just to tell the story of what he was seeing along the banks of rivers. Chad heard no during every phone call and was near the emotional bottom. After begging a receptionist at Alcoa, Chad finally secured his first appointment. Alcoa took a chance on the young river kid and gave him his first check for $8,400, enough to cover expenses for his first clean-up project. Since 1998, the organization has grown to include over 10 full-time employees, a fleet of 4 barges (大型平底船), 2 towboats(拖船), 1 crane, 6 workboats, 5 work trucks, and a large box truck to drag trash. 71.
