Grammar and Vocabulary Section A Directions: After reading the passage below, fill in the blanks to make the passage coherent and grammatically correct. For the blanks with a given word, fill in each blank with the proper form of the given word; for the other blanks, use one word that best fits each blank. Sleep Is Your Superpower Did you know that you have the ability to reduce your chances of having a car accident, improve your ability to fight off illnesses, and decrease your risk factors for heart disease and Alzheimer’s? Yes. Everyone has that superpower, in fact, we use it every day — sleep. Sleep is one of the most powerful activities ___1___ our bodies undergo. Often times, sleep is thought of as a passive process in which we merely lie in bed and wake up the next morning, with ___2___ happening in between. This could not be ___3___ (far) from the truth. Sleep is vital for learning and for the formation of new memories, growth, and development. The American Society of Sleep Medicine advises adults ___4___ (get) at least 7 hours of sleep each night. Matthew Walker, ___5___ professor of Sleep at the University of California, argues that sleep is the foundation for good health. A lack of sleep puts you at risk of cardiovascular problems, ___6___ heart attacks, strokes, arrhythmias and heart failure. In a 2011 study, it ___7___ (report) that lack of sleep increases a person’s risk of getting or dying from heart disease by 45%. When we sleep, the heart relaxes and starts to pump blood at a lower pressure. However, when you do not get enough sleep, your blood pressure goes up and your heart does not relax. This is partly ___8___ people who do not get enough sleep are at higher risk of high blood pressure or hypertension. In a study carried out in the US, ___9___ they deliberately infected test subjects with another type of Coronavirus (rhinovirus — responsible for the common cold), it was observed that subjects who got at least 7 or more hours of sleep at night were 4 times less likely ____10____ (infect), while those who got less than 7 hours were reported to have a lower number of T-killer cells responsible for eliminating foreign invaders from the body. The immune system is particularly boosted during slow-wave sleep stage. Section B Directions: Complete the following passage by using the words in the box. Each word can only be used once. Note that there is one word more than you need. A. fire B. requests C. effective D. inexperienced E. casual F. training G. acknowledge H. demonstrate I. panic J. vacancy K. screening Weird Job Interviews Finding a new job isn’t always easy. You search for a suitable ___11___, send in an application form and if that goes well, you might be invited for an interview. For some, this is when the ___12___ sets in — you’re going to be faced by a panel of strangers who’ll ___13___ difficult questions at you, and you’ll have to actually prove yourself. But how would you feel if, instead of being naked why you want the job, you’re asked to stand up and dance? From the perspective of a company, it wants to hire the right person because they can make a big difference to the success of the organization. It therefore needs to test a candidate in the most appropriate way to discover how suitable he or she may be. A good interview process should involve careful ___14___ of job applicants and ___15___ questions that every applicant gets asked. But that’s not always the case. Alison Green is an author and creator of the workplace advice column ‘Ask a Manager’. She told the BBC that some companies “give their interviewers little or no ___16___ and often leave them completely on their own when it comes to figuring out what to ask job candidates.” She mentions that some interviewers are too ___17___ and some focus on building a good rapport (友善) and end up hiring the candidate they just ‘clicked with’, regardless of their skills and abilities. A(n) ___18___ interviewer may think it’s clever to ask ‘if you were an animal, what kind would you be?’ That has been asked, Alison Green says, but in reality this has no connection with the job. And there have been inappropriate ___19___, such as one job seeker being asked to show the interviewer the inside of her handbag to ____20____ how organized she was. Talking of inappropriate, the BBC heard from a number of people who were surprised by the questions they were asked in an interview. Mature student Kevin Helton said that “the interviewer asked, ‘you used to be in the Army, how many people have you killed?’” Ⅲ. Reading Comprehension Section A Directions: For each blank in the following passage there are four words or phrases marked A, B, C and D. Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context. No one warned me that in my early 40s, I would start talking softly and longingly into prams (婴儿车). But when the right time came, I had, of course, every intention of becoming a conscientious, involved ___21___. As a psychotherapist, I am much aware of how life-transforming a good relationship with grandparent can be. It ___22___ so much more than treats, extra quality time and cheap nannying. Good grandparents help build psychological security by making their grandchildren feel part of a much wider and stable supportive family ___23___. They also give them a sense of their place in history and evolution and give their life a meaningful sense of perspective. Even when we reach adulthood, our psychological health can be ___24___ by the relationship that we may or may not have had with our grandparents. I frequently work with people who have a less than perfect relationship with their own parents. Many times I have been able to help people heal ___25___ by simply reawakening a cherished memory of a much happier and more unconditionally loving relationship with a grandparent. Alan was, in his own words, “a hopeless case of workaholism”. He still felt driven by trying to please his ___26___ perfectionist father. But, fortunately, I discovered that he had also ___27___ a much more unconditional kind of love from his calmer, happier and affectionate grandfather. Putting a photo of his grandad on his desk helped Alan keep his promise to himself to maintain better balance in his life. Nowadays, the chances of children and grandparents having intimate, satisfying relationships are fast ___28___. Recent research revealed that in Britain, one out of twenty grandparents is likely to have had no ___29___ whatsoever with at least one of their grandchildren during the past five years. There are many reasons for this new distancing of generations. Sometimes, it’s mere ___30___ that keeps them apart. I recently met a woman who proudly showed me a picture of her family in Australia. Unfortunately she told me, she hadn’t ever visited them, and hadn’t even seen her five-year-old granddaughter. The ___31___ aspect of this story was that, however sad this situation was for both parties, there appeared to be no bitterness or hatred. But many grandparents feel quite ___32___. They’re being forced apart from their grandchildren by less acceptable factors of modern society. Perhaps pressure of time maintains the distance. ___33___, nowadays, even if close extended families live within easy visiting distance, they may still not see much of each other. Parents often spend so much of their precious weekends cleaning, shopping and decorating that they hardly have time to get to know their children. ___34___, the children themselves may have such a heavy weekend of programmed activity that their time is also stretched to its limits. A visit to or from grandparents feels like a(n) ___35___ that no one can afford. 21. A. babysitter B. grandparent C. psychologist D. supporter 22. A. offers B. deserves C. demands D. assigns 23. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read. (A) Fifteen years ago, I took a summer vacation in Lecce in southern Italy. After climbing up a hill for a panoramic (全景的) view of the blue sea, white buildings and green olive trees, I paused to catch my breath and then positioned myself to take the best photo of this panorama. Unfortunately, just as I took out my camera, a woman approached from behind, and planted herself right in front of my view. Like me, this woman was here to stop, sigh and appreciate the view. Patient as I was, after about 15 minutes, my camera scanning the sun and reviewing the shot I would eventually take, I grew frustrated. Was it too much to ask her to move so I could take just one picture of the landscape? Sure, I could have asked her, but something prevented me from doing so. She seemed so content in her observation. I didn’t want to mess with that.. Another 15 minutes passed and I grew bored. The woman was still there. I decided to take the photo anyway. And now when I look at it, I think her presence in the photo is what makes the image interesting. The landscape, beautiful on its own, somehow comes to life and breathes because this woman is engaging with it. This photo, with the unique beauty that unfolded before me and that woman who “ruined” it, now hangs on a wall in my bedroom. What would she think if she knew that her figure is captured (捕捉) and frozen on some stranger’s bedroom wall? A bedroom, after all, is a very private space, in which some woman I don’t even know has been immortalized (使……永存). In some ways, she lives in my house. Perhaps we all live in each others' spaces. Perhaps this is what photos are for: to remind us that we all appreciate beauty and that we all share a common desire for pleasure, for connection, for something that is greater than us. That photo is a reminder, a captured moment, an unspoken conversation between two women, separated only by a thin square of glass. 36. What happened when the author was about to take a photo? A Her camera stopped working. B. A woman blocked her view. C. Someone asked her to leave. D. A friend approached from behind. 37. According to the author, the woman was probably . A. enjoying herself B. losing her patience C. waiting for the sunset D. thinking about her past 38. In the author’s opinion, what makes the photo so alive? A. The rich color of the landscape. B. The perfect positioning of the camera. C. The woman’s existence in the photo. D. The soft sunlight that summer day. 39. The passage can be seen as the author’s reflections (反思) upon . A. a particular life experience B. the pleasure of traveling C. the art of photography D. a lost friendship (B) Nest (T3007ES) Learning Thermostat (恒温器), Easy Temperature Control for Every Room in Your House. (C) Many employees must be tempted to query on a daily basis when they see their bosses headed down the wrong track. But caution, for fear of appearing insubordinate or foolish and thus possibly at risk of losing their jobs, often leads workers to keep silent. A culture of silence can be dangerous, argues a new book, “The Fearless Organization”, by Amy Edmondson, a professor at Harvard Business School. Some of her examples are from the airline industry. One was its deadliest accident: a crash between Boeing 747s in the Canary Islands in 1977 when a co-pilot felt unable to query his captain’s decision to take off based on a misunderstanding of instructions from air-traffic control. The risks may be lower than life or death in most organizations, but companies also suffer when people keep silent, Ms Edmondson believes. Volkswagen was caught up in a scandal(丑闻) over diesel(柴油)emissions from 2015. The engines of its diesel models did not meet American emissions standards and engineers devised a system to fool the regulators. Ms Edmondson says the company’s culture had been one based on threaten and fear; Ferdinand Piëch, its longtime boss, boasted of telling engineers they had six weeks to improve the bodywork fitting on pain of dismissal. In the circumstances, engineers were understandably unwilling to mention the bad news on emissions standards and instead worked around the problem. In a corporate culture based on fear and intimidation, it may appear that targets are being achieved in the short term. But in the long run the effect is likely to be counterproductive. Studies show that fear inhibits learning. And when confronted with a problem, scared workers find ways of covering it up or getting around it with inefficient practices. The answer is to create an atmosphere of “psychological safety” whereby workers can speak their minds. In a sense, this is the equivalent of Toyota’s “lean manufacturing” process, which allows any worker who spots a problem to stop the production line. This does not mean that workers, or their ideas, are immune from criticism, or that they should complain incessantly. As mundane(平凡的)tasks are automated, and workers rely on computers for data analysis, the added value of humans will stem from their creativity. But as Ms Edmondson’s book amply demonstrates, it is hard to be either constructive or creative if you are not confident about speaking out. 43. The underlined word “insubordinate” means . A. being inferior B. disobeying a superior C. getting aggressive D. being ignorant 44. We can conclude from Paragraph 3 that . A. Volkswagen’s engineers designed a system to meet American emissions standards B. when facing problems, scared workers resolve them directly C. Volkswagen’s engineers were at risk of losing jobs D. the culture of fear and intimidation must be counterproductive in the long term. 45. Which of the following is TRUE according to the author? A. A culture of being silent can be life-threatening. B. The risk of keeping silent is not necessarily associated with life and death. C. Volkswagen’s culture is on the basis of fear. D The value of humans lies in originality in today’s highly-automated world. 46. What is the passage mainly about? A. An introduction to Amy Edmondson’s new book. B. The disadvantages of fear and intimidation culture. C. Companies will perform better if employees are not threatened into silence. D. People need to be confident when they are speaking out. Section C Directions: Complete the following passage by using the sentences given below. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need. In business, there is a speed difference: It’s the difference between how important firm leaders say speed is to their competitive strategy and how fast the company actually moves. The difference is important regardless of industry and company size. ____47____ In our study of 343 businesses, the companies that choose to go, go, go to try to gain an edge ended up with lower sales and operating incomes than those that paused at key moments to make sure they were on the right track. What’s more, the firms that “slowed down to speed up” improved their top and bottom lines, averaging 40% higher sales and 52% higher operating incomes over a three-year period. ____48____ They thought differently about what “slower” and “faster” mean. Firms sometimes fail to understand the difference between operation speed (moving quickly) and strategic speed (reducing the time it takes to deliver value). Simply increasing the speed of production, for example, may be one way to try to reduce the speed difference. But that often leads to reduced value over time, in the form of lower-quality products and services. In our study, higher-performing companies with strategic speed always made changes when necessary. They became more open to ideas and discussion. ____49____ And they allowed time to look back and learn. By contrast, performance suffered at firms that moved fast all the time, paid too much attention to improving efficiency, stuck to tested methods, didn’t develop team spirit among their employees, and had little time thinking about changes. Strategic speed serves as a kind of leadership. ____50____ That kind of strategy must come from the top. A. How did they disobey the laws of business physics, taking more time than competitors yet performing better? B. Teams that regularly take time to get things right, rather than plough ahead full bore, are more successful in meeting their business goals. C. More haste, less speed, which in the study proves wrong. D. Companies fearful of losing their competitive advantage spend much time and money looking for ways to pick up the speed. E. They valued efficiency rather than consideration. F. They encouraged new ways of thinking. 51. Directions: road the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point (s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible. A plan to restore green spaces The UK government has revealed a plan to protect and restore England’s wild life. It focuses on at-risk species by making canals, rivers and streams cleaner and expanding green spaces. The new Environmental Improvement Plan sets goals to create or restore more than 5,000 square kilometres of wildlife habitats across England and restore 400 miles of rivers. It will create or expand 25 national nature reserves. New woodland will also be planted alongside rivers. At the moment, access to green spaces is not equal across the UK. Around 4% of people live more than 10 minutes away from their nearest park. The Environmental Improvement Plan aims to make sure households in England are within a 15-minute walk to a green space. As well as helping more people to act close to nature, the plan should increase England’s biodiversity. A species Survival Fund will be set up to help some of England’s most endangered animals, such as red squirrels (松鼠) and watch rats. The Government has set targets to boost these species by 2030. There are also targets to reduce food waste, glass, metal, paper and plastic by 2028, and to improve the quality of water in rivers. New rules mean that the Government will have to consider the environmental effects of any policy it puts forward. These goals are part of a 25- year plan that was launched in 2018. The aim of the plan is to improve the environment “within a generation” which is roughly 25 years. Although lots of people have welcomed the plan, not everyone is impressed. Pail de Zylva, from the charity Friends of the Earth, said it wasn’t clear enough how the goals would be met and that many of them were like promises the Government had already made but not yet delivered. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Ⅴ.
