Potassium sorbate (山梨酸钾) is a tasteless salt, primarily known for its role as a preservative (防腐剂) in food and drinks. Researchers have spent the last 50 years studying potassium sorbate as a food preservative, and their findings ____11____ (confirm) its safety. This preservative is commonly found in a variety of food and drinks, including baked goods, canned fruit and yogurt. ____12____ makes potassium sorbate so popular is that it does not change a product’s taste, smell, or appearance. In addition, the preservative dissolves easily in water, ____13____ allows it to work effectively at room temperature. ____14____ food, this chemical is used in personal care items as an antimicrobial (抗菌剂) and preservative. It is also approved for use in cat and dog food, as well as in other animal feed. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), labels potassium sorbate as“generally regarded as safe” ____15____ it does not build up in the body when consumed. Instead, it is simply broken down into water and carbon dioxide. While normal dietary intake is considered safe, very high doses may raise concerns. In 2015, the EFSA set a temporary acceptable daily intake of 3 mg per kg of body weight per day. This limit ____16____ (introduce) in response to concerns regarding developmental issues seen in animal studies. In experiments, rats ____17____ (give) 300 mg per kg per day showed harmful effects. The EFSA thus set a standard which is 100 times lower for human safety. Although it is not poisonous in ____18____, potassium sorbate added to food can sometimes be polluted with harmful substances like heavy metal during production, ____19____ presence can lead to health risks. Thus, it’s a good idea to read the labels carefully when you are hesitating to choose food. When they discover something exciting, like the perfect dumpling or a breathtaking mountain view, they don’t keep it to themselves. Instead, they ____22____ it and post it on social media, where it can create a ripple effect. Vivid descriptions, mouth-watering food shots, or snippets of adventures inspire followers, leaving them ____23____ to experience these places first-hand. Lesser-known cities thus become overnight sensations, and once quiet locations are quickly abuzz with visitors. This trend creates great opportunities for cities and travellers ____24____. That’s the power a post, picture or video on social media can have. Many young travellers now plan trips entirely based on ____25____ from platforms like Xiaohongshu or Douyin. They search for the coolest spots, the best eats and the most beautiful backdrops. However, with great power comes great responsibility. While the passion of youth is ____26____, it also brings challenges. Traffic jams, safety risks, and pressure on bike-sharing services have all highlighted the ____27____ of unchecked enthusiasm. This serves as a reminder that viral trends need to be managed thoughtfully. By using social media wisely — sharing ____28____, respecting local communities and thinking ahead — our intrepid (无畏的) adventurers can drive positive change. Their posts can breathe new life into hidden destinations, turning them into cultural hotspots while helping to ____29____ what makes them special. Cover letters seem like a lost art when it comes to applying for jobs in this digital world. They are becoming less of a ____31____ and more of an option. ____32____application processes make it easier for many candidates to apply, which sometimes means many more applications need to be sorted through before decisions are made. This may be a reason why a cover letter doesn’t hold the same value it used to and job seekers in many cases are ____33____ it. “Only a small percentage of applications we receive include cover letters, perhaps 10 percent,” says Tracy McShane-Wilson, executive director of talent acquisition at Grant Thornton LLP, a US-based accounting firm. ____34____, those who omit a cover letter, or deliver one with an obviously halfhearted effort, could be ____35____ an opportunity to set themselves apart from the crowd. “You can generally tell when a candidate is very ____36____ about a particular position or the organization, as he will take more time to study and then express why the role or organization fits well within his own professional goal and passion in a cover letter,” says Valerie Keels, head of D. A well-written cover letter could be the ____37____ between getting your foot in the door and getting the response letter from a company telling you that those in charge of hiring are ____38____ with your qualifications but have decided to pursue other candidates at this time. “The number of applicants has increased significantly over time, due to the greater ____39____of information about open roles through job sites and social media,” says Wilson. Given the amount of competition, she and other hiring managers say putting a little effort into composing a thoughtful cover letter could go a long way. For one, it tells a hiring manager how interested you are in the position you’ re applying for. “If you are the type of person that is _____40_____engaged and takes the time to write a cover letter, then you’ re probably also the type of person that cares about making sure that it is well-written, informative and _____41_____,” explains Wilson. Including a cover letter also tells a lot about a candidate’s most basic communication skills. Andrea Alaimo is the director of human resources at US-based logistics firm Redwood Logistics. She points out that _____42_____ she is not the only person involved in the hiring process, and thus not the only one _____43_____have to impress if they want to make it to the next round of the hiring process. “In the end, each hiring manager _____44_____how important mastery of the written word is for the role they are seeking to fill, but confirming good written communication skills can only help our review of a person’s total communication skills, from traditional writing skills to today’s _____45_____ communication methods,” she says. 31. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read. (A) In winter, Harnmerfest is a thirty-hour ride by bus from Oslo, though why anyone would want to go there in winter is a question worth considering. It is on the edge of the world, the northernmost town in Europe, as far from London as London is from Tunis, a place of dark and fierce winters, where the sun sinks into the Arctic Ocean in November and does not rise again for ten weeks. I wanted to see the Northern Lights. But now as I picked my way through Osto in late December, I was beginning to have my doubts. Things had not started well. I had overslept at the hotel, missing breakfast, and had to leap into my clothes. I couldn’t find a taxi and had to drag my overweight bag eight blocks to the central bus station. I had had huge difficulty persuading the staff at the Kreditkassen Bank on Karl Johans Gate to cash sufficient traveler’s cheques to pay the 1,200-kroner bus fare — they simply could not be made to grasp that the William McGuire Bryson on my passport and the Bill Brvson on my traveler’s cheques were both me — and now here I was arriving at the station two minutes before departure, and the girl at the ticket counter was telling me that she had no record of my reservation. “This isn’t happening,” I said. “I’m still at home in England enjoying Christmas.” Actually, I said, “There must be some mistake. Please look again.” The girl studied the passenger list. “No, Mr. Bryson, your name is not here.” But I could see it, even upside-down. “There it is, second from the bottom.” “No,” the girl decided, “that says Bernt Bjornson. That’s a Norwegian name.” “It doesn’t say Bernt Bjornson. It says Bill Bryson. Look at they, the two l’s. Miss, please,” But she wouldn’t have it. “If I miss this bus, when does the next one go?” “Next week at the same time.” Oh, splendid. “Miss, believe me, it says Bill Bryson.” “No, it doesn’t.” “Miss, look, I’ve come from England. I’m carrying some medicine that could save a child’s life.” She didn’t buy this. “I want to see the manager.” “He’s in Stavanger” “Listen, I made a reservation by telephone. If I don’t get on this bus, I’m going to write a letter to your manager that will cast a shadow over your career prospects for the rest of this century.” This clearly did not alarm her. Then it occurred to me. “If this Bernt Bjornson doesn’t show up, can I have this seat?” “Sure.” Why don’t I think of these things in the first place? “Thank you,” I said. 46. What can be learned from the passage about Hammerfest? A. It is located in the South of the city of Oslo. B. It is where the Northern Lights can be seen. C. It is known as a town without sufficient power supply. D. It remains in the darkness from November till next March. 47. The writer got to the station just two minutes before the train departed because he spent much time ________. A. cashing his traveler’s cheques B. packing everything into his luggage C. waiting for a taxi to send him there D. choosing suitable clothes to wear 48. By “Oh, splendid”, the writer meant that he actually felt ________. A. puzzled B. amazed C. worried D. relieved 49. Why did the writer say he was carrying some medicine and he would write to the manager? A. To tell the girl what he really wanted to do. B. To show the girl how angry he was with her. C. To warn the girl of the potential consequences. D. To persuade the girl to allow him onto the bus. A. an advertisement for medicine B. an introduction of a guidebook C. a cartoon about psychologists D. an introduction of a health plan (C) It’s an annual argument. Do we or do we not go on holiday? My partner says no because the boiler could go, or the roof fall off, and we have no savings to save us. I say you only live once and we work hard and what’s the point if you can’t go on holiday. The joy of a recession means no argument next year---we just won’t go. Since money is known to be one of the things most likely to bring a relationship to its knees, we should be grateful. For many families the recession means more than not booking a holiday. A YouGov poll of 2,000 people found 22% said they were arguing more with their partners because of concerns about money. What’s less clear is whether divorce and separation rates rise in a recession---financial pressures mean couples argue more but make splitting up less affordable. A recent research shows arguments about money were especially damaging to couples. Disputes were characterised by intense verbal aggression, tended to be repeated and not resolved, and made men, more than women, extremely angry. Kim Stephenson, an occupational psychologist, believes money is such a big deal because of what it symbolizes, which may be different things to men and women. “People can say the same things about money but have different ideas of what it’s for,” he explains. “They’ll say it’s to save, to spend, for security, for freedom, to show someone you love them.” He says men are more likely to see money as a way of buying status and of showing their parents that they’ve achieved something. “The biggest problem is that couples assume each other knows what’s going on with their finances, but they don’t. There seems to be more of a taboo(禁忌)about talking about money than about death. But you both need to know what you’re doing, who’s paying what into the joint account and how much you keep separately. In a healthy relationship, you don’t have to agree about money, but you have to talk about it.” 54. What does the author say about vacationing? A. People enjoy it all the more during a recession. B. It is the chief cause of family disputes. C. It makes all the hard work worthwhile. D. Few people can afford it without working hard. 55. What does the author mean by saying “ money is known…to bring a relationship to its knees”( Lines1-2, Para.2)? A. Money is considered to be the root of all evils. B. Few people can resist the temptation of money. C. Some people sacrifice their dignity for money. D. Disputes over money may ruin a relationship. 56. The YouGov poll of 2,000 people indicates that in a recession ________. A conflicts between couples tend to rise B. couples show more concern for each other C. it is more expensive for couples to split up D. divorce and separation rates increase 57. The author suggests at the end of the passage that couples should ________. A. put their money together instead of keeping it separately B. make efforts to reach agreement on their family budgets C. discuss money matters to maintain a healthy relationship D. avoid arguing about money matters to remain romantic (D) Parenting tips obtained from hunter-gatherers in Africa may be the key to bringing up more children, researchers have suggested. The idea is based on studies of communities such as the Kung of Botswana where each child is cared of by many adults. Kung children as young as four will help to look after younger ones and “baby-wearing”, in which infants are carried in slings (婴儿背带) is considered the norm. According to Dr. Nikhil Chaudhary, an evolutionary anthropologist at Cambridge University, these practices, known as alloparenting, could lead to less anxiety for children and parents. Dr. Annie Swanepoel, a child psychiatrist, believes that there are ways to incorporate them into western life. In Germany, one scheme has paired an old people’s home with a nursery. The residents help to look after the children, an arrangement similar to alloparenting. Another measure could be encouraging friendships between children in different school years to mirror the unsupervised mixed-age playgroups in hunter-gatherer communities. In a paper published in the Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, researchers said that the western nuclear family was a recent invention which broke with evolutionary history. This sudden shift to an “intensive mothering narrative” which suggests that mothers should manage child care alone, was likely to have been harmful. “Such narratives can lead to maternal exhaustion and have dangerous consequences,” they wrote. By contrast, in hunter-gatherer societies adults other than the parents can provide almost half of a child’s care. One previous study looked at the people of the Democratic Republic of Congo. It found that infants had an average of 14 alloparents a day by the time they were 18 weeks old and were passed between care givers eight times an hour. Chaudhary said that parents now had less childcare support from family and social networks than during most of humans’ evolutionary history, but introducing additional caregivers could reduce stress and maternal depression, which could have a “knock-on” benefit to a child’ s wellbeing. An infant born to a hunter-gatherer society could have more than ten caregivers — this contrasts sharply to nursery setting in the UK where regulations call for a ratio of one carer to four children aged two to three. While hunter-gatherer children learnt from observation and imitation in mixed-age playgroups, researchers said that western “instructive teaching”, where pupils are asked to sit still, may contribute to conditions such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (注意力缺陷多动障碍). Chaudhary said that Britain should explore the possibility that older siblings helping their parents “might also enhance their own social development.” 58. According to the passage, alloparenting refers to________. A. sharing childcare among community members B. teaching parenting skills to older children C. carrying infants anywhere their parents go D. engaging all the family members in childcare 59. The scheme in Germany is used to ________. A. encourage an attempt to facilitate intergenerational communication B. illustrate an approach to integrating alloparenting into western society C. introduce the conventional parenting style in western culture D. highlight the differences between western and African ways of living 60. What can be inferred about the nurseries in the UK? A. They tend to fall short of official requirements. B. They have difficulty finding enough caregivers. C. They need to improve their carer-to-child ratio. D. They should try to prevent parental depression. 61. Which of the following would be the best title? A. Instructive Teaching: A Dilemma for Anxious Parents B. For a Happier Family, Learn from the Hunter-gatherers C. Mixed-age Playgroup, a Better Choice for Lonely Children D. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. “I want to see the manager.” “He’s in Stavanger.” “Listen, I made a reservation by telephone. If I don’t get on this bus, I’m going to write a letter to your manager that will cast a shadow over your career prospects for the rest of this century.” This clearly did not alarm her. A. conflicts between couples tend to rise B. couples show more concern for each other C. it is more expensive for couples to split up D. divorce and separation rates increase 57. The author suggests at the end of the passage that couples should ________. A. put their money together instead of keeping it separately B. make efforts to reach agreement on their family budgets C. discuss money matters to maintain a healthy relationship D. avoid arguing about money matters to remain romantic 【答案】54. C 55. D 56. A 57. C 【解析】 【导语】本文是夹叙夹议文。文章主要讲述在经济衰退时期人们对钱的看法和人们的关系状况。 【54题详解】 推理判断题。根据第一段“I say you only live once and we work hard and what’s the point if you can’t go on holiday.”(我说你只活一次,我们努力工作,如果你不能去度假,那还有什么意义。)可知,在作者看来,度假才使得努力工作有意义。故选C。 【55题详解】 词句猜测题。根据第二段“money is known to be one of the things most likely to bring a relationship to its knees”(钱被认为是最有可能让一段关系破裂的东西之一)可知,作者认为说关于钱的话题会毁掉人们之间的关系。 故选A。 【57题详解】 细节理解题。根据最后一段“In a healthy relationship, you don’t have to agree about money, but you have to talk about it.”(在一段健康的关系中,你们不需要在钱的问题上达成一致,但你们必须谈论这个问题。)可知,作者建议,要想保持夫妻之间的健康关系,必须要讨论钱的问题。故选C。 (D) Parenting tips obtained from hunter-gatherers in Africa may be the key to bringing up more children, researchers have suggested. Chaudhary said that parents now had less childcare support from family and social networks than during most of humans’ evolutionary history but introducing additional caregivers could reduce stress and maternal depression, which could have a “knock-on” benefit to a child’ s wellbeing. Tracing the History of Parenting: from Africa to Europe 【答案】58. A 59. B 60. C 61. 根据第一段“The idea is based on studies of communities such as the Kung of Botswana where each child is cared of by many adults. Kung children as young as four will help to look after younger ones and “baby-wearing”, in which infants are carried in slings (婴儿背带) is considered the norm.(这个想法是基于对社区的研究,比如博茨瓦纳的Kung,那里的每个孩子都由许多成年人照顾。四岁的Kung儿童会帮助照顾更小的孩子,baby-wearing,即用婴儿背带把婴儿随身抱着,被认为是常态。)”以及第五段第一句“By contrast, in hunter-gatherer societies adults other than the parents can provide almost half of a child’s care.(相比之下,在狩猎采集社会中,除了父母之外的其他成年人可以提供孩子近一半的照顾。)”可知,alloparenting指的是社区成员共同照顾孩子。故选A项。 【59题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段中的“Dr. Annie Swanepoel, a child psychiatrist, believes that there are ways to incorporate them into western life. In Germany, one scheme has paired an old people’s home with a nursery. The residents help to look after the children, an arrangement similar to alloparenting.(儿童精神病学家Annie Swanepoel博士认为,有办法将它们融入西方生活。在德国,一个方案将养老院与幼儿园配对。居民们帮忙照顾孩子,这是一种类似于异亲育儿的安排。)”可知,德国的这个方案是用来举例说明如何将异亲育儿融入西方社会的。故选B项。 【60题详解】 推理判断题。根据倒数第三段中的“An infant born to a hunter-gatherer society could have more than ten caregivers — this contrasts sharply to nursery setting in the UK where regulations call for a ratio of one carer to four children aged two to three.(在狩猎采集社会中出生的婴儿可能有10多个照顾者——这与英国幼儿园的设置形成了鲜明对比,英国规定,2至3岁的儿童,看护者与儿童的比例为1:4。)”可推知,英国的幼儿园需要改进看护者与儿童的比例。故选C项。 【61题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第一段第一句“Parenting tips obtained from hunter-gatherers in Africa may be the key to bringing up more children, researchers have suggested.(研究人员提出,从非洲狩猎采集者那里获得的育儿技巧可能是养育更多孩子的关键。)” IV. By integrating PE into the exam system, we emphasize the importance of physical health from an early age, encouraging students to develop a balanced lifestyle. Secondly, it addresses the prevalent issue of student neglect towards physical exercise due to academic pressures, promoting a holistic educational approach.
