Paragraph 1: Returning to his office the next day, he found a package on his desk. The return address
“
Mr. Harold
Belser
”
caught his attention. Jack tore open the package. There inside was the gold box and an envelope. Jack蒺s hands shook
as he read the note inside.
“
Upon my death, please post this box and its contents to Jack Bennett. It蒺s the thing I valued
most in my life.
”
A small key was taped to the letter.
Paragraph 2: His heart racing, and tears filling his eyes, Jack carefully unlocked the box. There inside he found a
beautiful gold pocket watch. With great care, he opened it. Inside he found these words carved:
“
Jack, thanks for your time!
Harold Belser.
”
Eventually, Jack realized what Mr. Harold Belser valued most was the time he spent with him in that old
house in his childhood days. Jack held the watch for a few minutes, then called his assistant and called off his appointments
for the next two days.
“
Why?
”
his assistant asked surprisingly.
“
I need some time to spend with my wife and son,
”
he
said.

False Fear of Big Fish
Many people believe sharks are dangerous and will always try to hurt or even kill humans.
1.
A shark exhibition at the National Aquarium
(
水 族 馆
)
in Baltimore, US, proves this.
Visitors can touch young sharks, see their eggs develop and watch a dozen different species swim
smoothly around a huge tank.
Most people fail to realize that attacks don蒺t happen very often. Humans are more likely to be
killed by lightning than by a shark. 2. There, kids can learn, from an early age, not to
fear sharks.
“
People fear what they don蒺t know,
”
said Nancy Hotchkiss, an organizer of the exhibition.
“
Shark has been around for 400 million years and plays an important role in the ocean蒺s food
chain. We want people to discover that sharks are amazing animals that need our respect and
protection.
”
3. A study, published in January in the US magazine, Science, found that almost all
recorded shark species have fallen by half in the past 8 to 15 years.
Thousands of sharks are hunted in Asia for special foods, such as shark fin
(

)
soup.
And many others get caught in nets, while fishermen are hunting other fish. 4.
“
Some fishing methods are actually cleaning out the ocean for sharks,
”
said Dave Schofield,
the manager of the aquarium蒺s ocean health program. 5.

Golf is different. In a win鄄at鄄all鄄costs world, the game holds itself to a higher standard. Golf
isn蒺t a game where referees watch closely. In golf tournaments, dozens of competitors are spread

Technology is forever changing the way we get our news. Many people now get a lot of their
news on electronic devices, instead of traditional media, such as newspapers, television or radio. It
is reported that an increasing number of people are also turning to social media for information.
Now, there is a new technology that could greatly change the way we get the news:

Honesty became a medal of honor. When one of the game蒺s early stars, Bobby Jones, was
praised for calling a penalty on himself at the 1925 US Open, he replied:
“
You might as well
praise a man for not robbing a bank.
”
So even the error had no effect on Zach蒺s final score
—
he has never used the extra club, the
teenager packed up his medal and dropped it in the mail.
“
But this was golf, and rules are rules.
I just knew what I had to do,

computer鄄created news readers. Recently, China launched what it called the world蒺s first artificial
intelligence, or AI news presenters.
The news readers, supported by machine learning technology, are based on two real鄄life
Chinese newsmen. One is able to present newscasts in English, the other in Chinese. A report said
machine learning was used to examine video images and sounds of the two newsmen. Similar
technology has been used to create video products known as
“
deepfake
”
videos. A deepfake
video that looks real, but was electronically changed. Such videos can make people appear to say
things they never said.
It蒺s said that the AI presenters will be a great improvement to the news team because they
“
can work 24 hours a day
”
on its website and on social media. One of the presenters even
promised to
“
work tirelessly
”
to keep people informed. Some machine learning experts said the
system showed China蒺s latest progress in voice recognition, text鄄to鄄speech technology and data
analysis.
Others wondered about the effects robots might have on employment and workers. Some
people argued that only low鄄level jobs requiring heavy labor will be easily replaced by robots.
Others praised the technology as a way for companies to make money from low鄄cost labor
machines. Some businesses have experimented with similar technology for possible use in news
operations.
Britain蒺s BBC recently released a video that used machine learning to make it look like one
of its news readers speaking different languages. The London鄄based company that developed the
system says its goal is to
“
remove the language barrier
”
for many different kinds of video across
the Internet. Also, Amazon蒺s working on Alexa smart speaker system to create a special news
reader voice.
