sadness with each other, which is also important in other relationships. And as a friend, you should always lend a hand while
they are in need. Besides, try to appreciate your friends蒺 advantages, for nobody is perfect and being tolerant is what a
qualified friend should do.
Hopefully these tips above can help, and I look forward to your reply soon.

A good teacher is like a shining star to students. Miss Li, my senior high school English teacher, is a shining star in my
life. Miss Li, like a shining star, shines in my path of success.
When I began my senior high school years, I had difficulty in learning English. I dared not speak English aloud in
public because of my poor pronunciation and intonation. I could not get high marks and my grammar was not right at all.
Frustrated and afraid of being laughed at, I never put up my hand to answer questions in English class. When Miss Li found
out my situation, she encouraged me and lent me a hand. She patiently taught me English grammar, helped me understand
how to write a good sentence, and lent me many English books and magazines, which rapidly improved my English. With
her help, I became interested in English and eventually got high marks.

1. Maybe it蒺s time to ask your boss for a raise. Tory Johnson, CEO of Women for
Hire, offered these tips:
★ Don蒺t jump over the process. Many people avoid having a conversation about salary
because they are uncomfortable talking about money. They also think that any requests they make
will fall on deaf ears. That蒺s a cop鄄out
(
逃避
)
. You have to be willing to step up to the plate.
★2. Think about your performance, the demands of your position, your past and
future responsibilities, and your track record for the past year.
★Don蒺t get emotional. In an effective negotiation
(
协商
)
, focus on being respected and fairly
compensated
(
补偿
)
. You蒺re asking for more money because you蒺re smart and competent, not
because someone likes you as a friend.
★ Do research comparable salaries. Before discussing salaries with your boss, do your
homework and find out the going salary in your industry. Figure out what comparable positions
pay based on level of experience and education. Check with the Department of Labor statistics
(

)
, survey sites such as Salary.com, and industry鄄specific trade associations. 3. But
you must realize that they may inflate
(

)
their answers.
★4. If you tell your boss you are going to leave unless you receive a 10 percent
raise, then be fully prepared to pack your bags.
★Do offer alternatives to a large鄄increase pay. If the company won蒺t move your base salary,
see if they will agree to a bonus

How happy is the little stone.
That ramble in the road alone,
And doesn蒺t care about careers,
And exigencies never fears

Whose coat of elemental brown
A passing universe put on;
And independent as the sun,
Associates or glows alone,
Fulfilling absolute decree

Getting rid of dirt, in the opinion of most people, is a good thing. However, there is nothing
fixed about attitudes to dirt.
In the early 16th century, people thought that dirt on the skin was a means to block out
disease, as medical opinion had it that washing off dirt with hot water could open up the skin and
let ills in. A particular danger was thought to lie in public baths. By 1538, the French king had
closed the bathhouses in his kingdom. So did the king of England in 1546. Thus it began a long
time when the rich and the poor in Europe lived with dirt in a friendly way. Henry Ⅳ , King of
France, was famously dirty. Upon learning that a nobleman had taken a bath, the king ordered
that, to avoid the attack of disease, the nobleman should not go out.
Though the belief in the merit
(

of dirt was long鄄lived, dirt has no longer been
regarded as a nice neighbor ever since the 18th century. Scientifically speaking, cleaning away
dirt is good to health. Clean water supply and hand washing are practical means of preventing
disease. Yet, it seems that standards of cleanliness have moved beyond science since World War

Ⅱ . Advertisements repeatedly sell the idea: clothes need to be whiter than white, cloths ever
softer, surfaces to shine. Has the hate for dirt, however, gone too far?
Attitudes to dirt still differ hugely nowadays. Many first鄄time parents nervously try to warn
their children off touching dirt, which might be responsible for the spread of disease. On the
contrary, Mary Ruebush, an American immunologist
(

, encourages children to play in
the dirt to build up a strong immune system. And the latter
