Throughout 2024, scientists around the world worked hard to make breakthroughs (突破) that could forever change our lives. Let’s take a look at some of them. reusable rockets SpaceX复用火箭 SpaceX made great progress in 2024 with the completion (完成) of several test flights. The most successful one was the fifth which took place on Oct 13, 2024. The Super Heavy booster (助推器), which is part of the Starship rocket, returned safe and sound to its launch site in Texas, US. About seven minutes after launch, the booster flew back and was finally “caught” by two mechanical (机械的) arms from the launch tower. SpaceX will do more tests in 2025, with the first likely to take place in January. The company’s efforts will bring it closer to the goal of creating reusable rockets and eventually helping humans settle on Mars. Biochemistry game-changer AlphaFold2, an AI model, made a significant contribution to biochemistry (生物化学) in 2024. Created by Demis Hassabis and John Jumper from Google DeepMind in the UK, the AI can predict the shapes of almost all 200 million known proteins (蛋白质). This helps scientists quickly identify the functions of different proteins in living things. It is important for understanding difficult issues like antibiotic resistance (抗生素耐药性) and can help with the discovery of better treatments for diseases like Parkinson’s. The two creators won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2024. Welcoming a new system For years, Google’s Android and Apple’s iOS have dominated (主导) smartphone operating systems. However, things changed in late 2024 with the launching of Huawei’s HarmonyOS, China’s first independently-developed operating system. From 2025, all new Huawei products, including smartphones and tablets, will run on this system. HarmonyOS Next is called the “pure blood” version of Harmony, because it no longer supports Android apps and uses its own app gallery. The system also includes an AI voice assistant (助手) that helps people who have trouble speaking.  Deep sea research pioneer On Nov 17, 2024, China’s first domestically built (国产) ocean drilling ship (钻井船), Mengxiang, or “Dream”, went into service. Mengxiang is China’s largest scientific research ship to date. It features highly advanced equipment (设备) that can dig as deep as 11 kilometers below the deep sea floor. By digging deep into Earth’s crust (地壳), we can learn more about how the planet works. The ship also has a digital “super brain”, two intelligent underwater robots and nine laboratories. Its unique engines allow it to travel safely even in super typhoons.  1.What is the purpose of developing reusable rockets from this article? A. To save costs for space exploration. B. To increase the speed of space flights. C. To make it possible for humans to settle on Mars. D. To show the advanced technology of SpaceX. 2. What can we know about the importance of AlphaFold2 from the passage 2? A. It is only useful for studying antibiotic resistance. B. It has a wide range of applications in biochemistry. C. It is mainly used for treating Parkinson's disease. D. It has no practical value in scientific research. 3. What can we know about HarmonyOS Next? A. It is completely different from HarmonyOS. B. It still depends on Android apps. C. It has a unique app gallery. D. It doesn't have an AI voice assistant. 4. What can we infer from the passage about Mengxiang? A. It is the only scientific research ship in China. B. Mengxiang has no intelligent robots. C. It can help us better understand the Earth. D. It is not safe in bad weather. 5.What is the passage mainly about? A. The achievements of science in 2024. B. The challenges of modern technology. C. The history of space exploration. D. Filters can make people look more beautiful and even add funny effects (效果). However, TikTok is making some changes. In November 2024, TikTok said that users under 18 won’t be able to use beauty filters that change their features in ways makeup (化妆) can’t. But don’t worry, funny filters like animal ears will still be allowed. Why the change? Beauty filters can hurt people’s mental health, according to the BBC. A UK-based group called 5Rights found that 34 percent of girls aged 11 to 21 won’t post a photo unless they edit how they look. Another report from Dove, a beauty brand, found that 48 percent of girls who often edit their photos feel worse about their bodies. Seeing these edited images (形象) all the time can make it hard for young people to tell what’s real. They might start to think that perfect, edited images are normal, which can change how they see the world. Jessica Chalmers, an online child safety expert, said that TikTok’s move is “a step in the right direction”. The ban (禁令) only works if users have accounts (账号) with their real ages. However, not everyone under 18 has given TikTok their real age. To help with this, TikTok is testing smart technology to look at things like “happy birthday” messages to guess ages. 1. What change did TikTok make in November 2024? A. It stopped children from using the app. B. It stopped the use of filters on the app. C. It updated its collection of funny filters. D. It banned beauty filters for users under 18. 2. Why did TikTok make the change? A. To keep young people away from screens. B. To make more girls interested in the app. C. To improve young people’s mental health. D. To help beauty brands sell more make-up. 3. What is Jessica Chalmers’ attitude toward the change? A. Unknown. B. Supportive. C. Opposed. D. Doubtful. 4. According to the last paragraph, how will TikTok make its change work? A. By sending messages to its users. B. By guiding its users by their interests. C. By putting an end to some of its users’ accounts. D. By using smart technology to get its users’ real ages. 【答案】DCBD 【解析】 TikTok 于 2024 年 11 月禁止 18 岁以下用户用特定美颜滤镜,旨在改善心理健康,正测试技术落实。 1. D 根据 “In November 2024, TikTok said that users under 18 won’t be able to use beauty filters that change their features in ways makeup (化妆) can’t.”(2024 年 11 月,TikTok 表示,18 岁以下用户将无法使用那些以化妆无法实现的方式改变自身特征的美颜滤镜。)可知答案是 D。 2. C 根据 “Beauty filters can hurt people’s mental health, according to the BBC.”(据英国广播公司报道,美颜滤镜会损害人们的心理健康。)以及后面提到的一些调查数据都表明美颜滤镜对年轻人心理健康有影响,所以 TikTok 做出改变是为了改善年轻人的心理健康。答案是 C。 3. B 根据 “Jessica Chalmers, an online child safety expert, said that TikTok’s move is “a step in the right direction”.”(网络儿童安全专家 Jessica Chalmers 表示,TikTok 的这一举措是 “朝着正确方向迈出的一步”。)可知她是支持这一改变的。答案是 B。 4. D 根据 “To help with this, TikTok is testing smart technology to look at things like “happy birthday” messages to guess ages.”(为了实现这一点,TikTok 正在测试智能技术,通过查看诸如 “生日快乐” 等消息来猜测年龄。)可知答案是 D。 阅读理解E In 2024, the world faced many challenges and uncertainties, affecting everyone in different ways. For many people, peace remained a dream: There were ongoing bombings (轰炸) in the Middle East, the Ukraine crisis (乌克兰危机) continued, and a big change happened when the Assad family rule in Syria came to an end.  Although there were many problems, the year also saw many touching moments that reminded us of the beauty of humanity (人性). I still remember that during the Paris Olympic Games, Chinese badminton player He Bingjiao carried a Spanish pin (徽章) with her onto the podium (领奖台) to show her support for Carolina Marin, a Spanish badminton player who had to give up the competition due to an injury. This act of kindness shows that love and support can bring us together.  At the same time, technology continued to develop to new heights. ChatGPT-4o, Sora, Suno... As artificial intelligence (AI) became a part of our daily lives, many truly experienced their power in 2024. Take me as an example. Thanks to AI, my dream of creating my own songs finally came true. A piece of beautiful music came into being with just a few clicks (点击)!  In 2024, we saw many changes on and about social media. In April 2024, the US passed a rule requiring TikTok to be sold to a non-Chinese company within nine to 12 months or it would face a ban (禁用) in the country. In November, Australia introduced a strict and much-talked-about rule: Kids under 16 can’t use social media. Meanwhile, we also saw more foreigners visiting and sharing videos about their travels in China in 2024, thanks to China’s new visa-free transit policy (过境免签政策).   It’s hard to fit the year 2024 into a short article. But now, as we begin the year 2025, one thing is certain: By working together and being creative, we can find solutions for a better future. 1.What significant event happened in Syria in 2024? A. The Assad family rule came to an end. B. The Ukraine crisis continued. C. The Paris Olympic Games took place. D. TikTok was banned in the US. 2. What does the author imply about the impact of AI on creativity? A. AI limits the potential of human creativity. B. AI makes it easier for people to express their creativity. C. AI replaces the need for human creativity. D. AI has no significant impact on creativity. 3. What message does the story of He Bingjiao carrying a Spanish pin convey? A. Sports should be separated from politics. B. Athletes should focus on their own performance. C. Acts of kindness can unite people across borders. D. Competitions should be more focused on entertainment. 4. What can be inferred about the changes in social media regulations in 2024? A. Social media platforms were encouraged to expand globally. B. There was a trend towards stricter regulations on social media use. C. Social media companies were given more freedom to operate. D. The use of social media was promoted among younger users. 5. What is the author's overall view of the year 2024? A. It was a year filled with only challenges and uncertainties. B. It was a year that was overshadowed by global conflicts. C. It was a year that highlighted the importance of technology. D. It was a year of important progress and positive changes. 【答案】ABCBD 【解析】2024年已经结束。尽管世界面临许多挑战和不确定性,但这一年也见证了许多感人和积极的时刻。 1.A文章中提到:“a big change happened when the Assad family rule in Syria came to an end.” 这句话直接说明了2024年在叙利亚发生的重大事件是阿萨德家族统治的结束。 2. B文章中提到:“Thanks to AI, my dream of creating my own songs finally came true. A piece of beautiful music came into being with just a few clicks!” 这表明作者认为AI使得创作变得更加容易,从而支持了选项B。 3. Ava was nervous, but she stood up and began reading. She was nervous because she stammered (结结巴巴地说), “Em ... Emma was stand ... ing ...” Hearing this, some of the students started laughing. After class, Ava made her way to the library, hoping to avoid those students and practice reading. She sat in a far corner of the library and started practicing. However, after a number of tries, she realized that reading fluently was still too hard for her. She clearly needed a great deal of practice and help. Aliza, one of her classmates who had been watching her for some time, went over to Ava and offered to help. From then on, every day whenever they had free time, Aliza would go to help Ava with her reading. A few weeks later, Ava began to read better and her confidence grew. At the end of the semester, Miss Margaret held a reading test. When it was Ava’s turn, to everyone’s surprise, Ava read the paragraph fluently. Miss Margaret praised Ava on her improved reading ability. Aliza felt proud of Ava as well. Ava and Aliza became good friends after that. Ava was very thankful to Aliza for everything she did. This wonderful train can reach a test speed of 450 kilometers per hour and an operating speed of 400 km/h. When it starts to be used for business, it will be the quickest high-speed train in the world, much faster than the CR400 that runs at 350 km/h. The China State Railway Group, which made this train, said that the CR450 has set new global standards in many important parts like speed, using less energy, making less noise, and braking performance. Even though it goes at a higher speed, its braking is as good as the 350 km/h trains. This is because of the great engineering work that keeps the train steady and safe even when it's fast. The CR450 also cares a lot about making passengers feel comfortable. By using good noise-cutting technology, the inside of the train is as quiet as the 350 km/h trains. Also, What's more, its running resistance has been decreased by 22 percent and its weight has been reduced by 10 percent, which helps to save energy. The inside has been made again, with 4 percent more room, and there are better places to put luggage. Two samples were shown on that day. They were made by different companies, but both want to give passengers a nice trip. The China State Railway Group will do more tests to make sure the train is okay for business use. Since 2012, China's railway has made many new things, like the Fuxing high-speed train, and has built a whole high-speed rail technology system. The CR450 shows China's ability to make new things and its science power. It also shows the good points of China's system, which helps the railway grow. 阅读理解E In 2024, the world faced many challenges and uncertainties, affecting everyone in different ways. 阅读理解F Since Dec 17, 2024, China’s National Immigration Administration (NIA, 国家移民管理局) has relaxed its visa-free transit policy (过境免签政策). Make ticket machines easier to use.  4. What is the main focus of the article? A. China’s push to boost domestic tourism. B. China’s efforts to attract foreign tourists. C. China’s policies to reduce trade barriers. D. China’s role in supporting global economy. 阅读理解G “Ava, why don’t you read this paragraph for us?” Miss Margaret asked. She also came to realize that there are always two types of people in the world: those who make fun of you and those who help you overcome your weaknesses (弱点). The point is that we shouldn’t allow others’ words to hold us back. Instead, we can use their laughter to push us to improve ourselves. But for those who help and support us, we should show how much we appreciate them. Even a simple thank you can go a long way in showing our appreciation.
