They say eyes are the windows to the soul. Yet behind the “windowpane (窗玻璃)” of my left eye, there was a leak that caused nearly unbearable pain. I was diagnosed with Coats’ disease (外层渗出性视网膜病变) at 8.
My life was consumed by pain and worsening vision. Despite taking medicine and undergoing three surgeries, nothing improved. Eventually, my diseased eye had to be removed.
I was excited to get rid of it since that meant I could get a normal-looking prosthetic eye (义眼) and I would be free of pain. But actually, I hated the way my eye looked almost more than the pain it gave me. I just wanted to be normal and fit in. I was sick of all the stares and questions.
At 18, my eye removal surgery finally took place. The recovery was hard. My eyelid was swollen for a whole week. Yet once the swelling had gone down and the healing was done: No more pain.
However, walking around without an eye was awkward, and a new kind of pain appeared — a realization that I would never be like everyone else. To deal with this, I turned pain into humor and art.`I wore eye patches (眼罩), styled my hair over the empty space, called myself “emo”, and made jokes.
Within a month, I visited a prosthetic eye expert. She made me an eye that looked exactly like my other eye. This experience was liberating, and the shame of being different began to disappear.
When the new eye was put in place, I joyfully took countless selfies. I felt like the window to my soul had been fixed. I had another eye made that has a butterfly where the pupil (瞳孔) sits. I feel like I’ve turned my suffering into art. It has become self-expression. I wear my butterfly eye for special occasions to make me stand out.
I’ve come to realize that standing out is not a bad thing. I turned my pain into freedom. I’m learning to accept who I am — the one-eyed girl. The window to my soul isn’t broken; it’s just custom-made.
41. What did Coats’ disease result in for the author in her life?

Oysters (牡蛎) are enjoyed as delicious dishes worldwide. More than that, they are also “ecosystem engineers”. Facing a declining local oyster population, a group in New York began its “Billion Oyster Project (BOP)” to restore this natural resource, with this year marking its 10th anniversary, reported the BBC.
Oysters help clean the water by removing pollutants like nitrogen (氮), which can cause too much algae (藻类) to grow. “Oysters’ filtration capacity can help the whole ecosystem,” Carrie Roble, an ecologist, told the BBC.
As young oysters gather on shells and grow up over generations, they construct reefs that provide habitats for hundreds of species, creating a lively underwater city of marine (海洋的) life.
Oyster reefs also protect coastlines by acting as natural storm barriers, lessening the impact of large waves and reducing flooding and erosion.
To help restore oyster reefs, the BOP project places oyster babies into rivers in metal cages filled with empty shells and artificial reef balls, using donated shells from restaurants as key materials. These shells offer the necessary hard surface and calcium carbonate (碳酸钙) for young oysters to settle and eventually create an oyster reef.
Thanks to these efforts, more than 140 million oysters have been restored over the past 10 years in the New York City Harbor, and 18 active restoration sites and field stations have been built. The waterways surrounding New York are now the cleanest they’ve been in over 100 years, according to BOP.
However, when counting oysters, it’s difficult to tell if they are restored or drifted there. Baby oysters float for two weeks before settling on a hard surface, requiring extra lab work to trace their origins. “I am very anxious to find out how many came from the restoration oysters,” Professor Matt Hare from Cornell University, who is involved in the project, told the BBC.
What’s more, mud from erosion makes growing oysters more difficult by covering their growth surfaces. The use of nutrient-rich chemicals also leads to algae overgrowth, which reduces oxygen levels.
Other than New York, oyster restoration projects in various countries and regions like Bangladesh, Australia and China’s Hong Kong SAR are also underway. Each project has its unique focus including crosion, storms and water quality.
As for BOP the group is on track to meet its 1-billion oyster goal by 2035, reported Science Line.
46. What is the primary goal of the Billion Oyster Project?
A. To serve oysters in restaurants.
B. To create new species of oysters.
C. To reduce nitrogen levels in the water.
D. To restore the natural oyster population.
47. Why are oysters considered “ecosystem engineers”?
A. They help reduce certain water pollutants.
B. They remove microplastics from water.
C. They eat harmful chemical substances.
D. They stop algae from growing.
48. What can be learned about oyster reefs from Paragraph 3?
A. They are formed in a short time.
B. They rely heavily on other species.
C. They move along with ocean currents.
D They create settlements for other marine life.
49. How does the BOP project help restore oyster reefs?
A. By removing pollutants like nitrogen.
B. By providing habitats for baby oysters.
C. By releasing mature oysters into the sea.
D. By adding calcium carbonate to oyster shells.
50. What is a challenge facing the BOP project?
A. The lack of labs to do work in.
B. The slow growth of baby oysters.
C. Counting and identifying oysters.
D. Oyster overpopulation due to fertilizer use.

William Wordsworth’s metaphor, “Your mind is the garden, your thoughts are the seeds. The harvest can either be flowers or weeds,” resonates with the idea that our mental landscape is similar to a garden, where the seeds of our thoughts determine the nature of our lives. This concept suggests that the way we nurture our thoughts can significantly impact our personal development and success.
Our thoughts are the seeds that, when nurtured with care, can blossom into the flowers of success and happiness. Conversely, neglecting the cultivation of our thoughts can lead to a life overgrown with the weeds of failure and despair. To ensure our minds bear the fruits of our desires, it’s crucial to prepare the soil of our minds with the nutrients of education, health, and effective time management. These elements enrich our mental landscape, providing the ideal environment for our ambitions to take root and flourish.
The principle of sowing and reaping (收获) is as true for our lives as it is for a garden. Just as a gardener who plants tomatoes expects tomatoes, we should anticipate that the intentional cultivation of our thoughts will yield a corresponding harvest in life. Each of us holds the power to choose which seeds to plant, and thus, the responsibility for the outcomes we reap.
Moreover, the impact of our thoughts extends beyond personal success; they also influence our relationships and societal contributions. Kind thoughts and actions can foster harmony and cooperation, while negative thoughts can lead to conflict and isolation. The choice to plant seeds of empathy and understanding can result in a life enriched by strong social bonds and a sense of community. Additionally, our thoughts can shape our resilience in the face of adversity, as optimistic thinking can guide us through challenges, whereas pessimism may hinder our ability to overcome obstacles.
Drawing everything together, the garden of our mind requires deliberate tending. By selecting and nurturing positive thoughts, and by preparing the conditions for their growth, we can harvest a life rich with the fulfillment of our goals and dreams. The choice is ours: to plant the seeds of potential or to let the garden lie fallow (休耕). It is through this conscious cultivation that we can transform our minds from a plot overgrown with weeds into a garden blooming with the flowers of success and the fruits of meaningful contributions to society. The power to shape our destiny lies within us, and it begins with the thoughts we choose to plant today.
51. How does the author illustrate the concept of mental preparation?
A. By explaining it as the cultivation of plants.
B. By relating it to the achievement of personal goals.
C. By associating it with the management of natural conditions.
D. By comparing it to the process of gardening and seed nurturing.
52. What can be inferred about our thoughts from Paragraph 2?
A. They can be cultivated to yield positive results.
B. They can develop our effective time management.
C. They are directly responsible for all our successes.
D. They are unable to change a life filled with despair.
53. What does it suggest about thoughts and life outcomes according to Paragraph 3?
A. Life outcomes are decided in advance. B. Life outcomes are the fruits of our desires.
C. Cultivating thoughts shapes life outcomes. D. Cultivating thoughts depends on life outcomes.
54. What is the main idea of Paragraph 4?
A. The power of thoughts in shaping our lives and relationships.
B. The effect of optimism on overcoming life’s challenges.
C. The role of empathy in building a strong community.
D. The importance of personal success in society.
55. What conclusion can we draw from the passage?
A. We cannot change our destiny. B. Cultivating positive thoughts matters.
C. Personal goals depend on social impact. D. Our thoughts can directly lead to success.
【答案】51. D 52. A 53. C 54. A 55. B

英语笔试
第Ⅱ卷
注意事项:

2.本卷共6小题,共35分。
第三部分:写作
第一节:阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读短文,按照题目要求用英语回答问题。
Earlier this year, I was looking for part-time work. Moonmilk, a cake and ice cream shop nearby, was hiring, so I went in for a trial shift. I practised scooping (舀) ice cream for 20 minutes and talked to the manager for 40 minutes about our favourite pizza spots. I immediately knew this place was special. While I originally just set out to earn some extra money during the summer, the bonds and memories I made there turned out to be more valuable than any paycheck.
Once, a man who works for the union of the local movie theatre came in to place an order. He wanted a cake to celebrate a victory he’ d had in stopping the theatre from being evicted (驱逐) by its landlord. Moonmilk’s owner was touched by the story and refused payment for the cake. Later, the union leader— so moved by the gesture— delivered free movie tickets to Moonmilk staff.
The older women customers are among my favourites. They have a way of making you feel at ease; they often wonder if I’m okay and tell me I look tired. One regular, always alone and smiling, is kind and generous, ordering methodically (有条不紊地) and always declaring we have the best ice cream in the city.
There’s also the guy who comes in frequently to ask if we have the chocolate orange flavour— that we only ever have at Christmas. I always have to say no, but his persistence brings me joy, especially on days when I’m tired.
As with any job, there are unpleasant moments. My wrist often hurts from repeatedly scooping out ice cream, and it’s always annoying when a group of people come in and take way too long to order, holding up all the others waiting.
In the fall, my full-time job’s schedule becomes more demanding and I know I’ll have to scale back my shifts. I’ll miss the busyness of the summer season and will run into my favourite customers less often. The winter months are long and the owner has spoken about days when only three people come in.
But my experience working at this popular spot has helped me feel more connected to my local community. The interactions and connections I’ve made will sustain me until at least next summer. Hopefully, the orange chocolate ice cream has returned by then.

42. Why did the author feel excited about the removal of her diseased eye?
A. She was eager to have better vision.
B. She wanted to look different from others.
C. She expected to get a cool prosthetic eye.
D. She hoped to look more like everyone else.
43. How did the author overcome her “new pain” after her eye was removed?
A. By avoiding social interactions.
B. By seeking help from a support group.
C. By using humor and art to express herself.
D By constantly changing her prosthetic eye.
44. How does the author ultimately view her identity?
A. As a unique individual who stands out.
B. As someone constantly struggling with pain.
C. As someone who can adjust to her environment.
D. As an ordinary person with an extraordinary story.
45. What does the story convey?
A The social shame associated with wearing a prosthetic eye.
B. The medical details and consequences of Coats’ disease.
C. The pressure to obey and the challenges of standing out.
D. The shift from challenges to self-acceptance.

Oyster reefs also protect coastlines by acting as natural storm barriers lessening the impact of large waves and reducing flooding and erosion.
As for BOP, the group is on track to meet its 1-billion oyster goal by 2035, reported Science Line.
