Having a lisp (made me feel shy about talking because I was afraid of being
laughed at.So,I usually kept quiet to avoid feeling awkward. This meant I didn't talk much with
other kids my age. When people thought of me,they would say,"Kathy?Oh,she's the quiet one."
That's what most people would say when they thought of me.as if"Quiet"were part of my name.
I was okay with that.I didn't need to be heard.
Last September, however, that all changed.I started my creative writing class with Ms.Haist,
a teacher known for her ability to inspire students.Every day we would be given a different
writing task and,if we wished,we could share what we had written.I remember listening to others
read their work and thinking:"That will never be me.I'll never have the courage to do that."
One day.I wrote a short story that I was really proud of.It was special to me because it was
about a character who had some problems like me,but found a way to be strong.I wanted to share
my story with everyone,to let the words I wrote come to life outside of'my notebook. My heart
was pounding really fast as I raiscd my hand.
In my head,I could hear those little voices telling me."You have a lisp.remember?Besides.
your writing isn't that good.Just stay quiet."These were the same voices that made me feel unsure
and scared.
