American companies are developing unmanned planes that are larger than drones( 无人机).
The goal is to help farmers and reduce risks to human safety.
When Hector Xu was learning to pilot a helicopter(直升机) in college with his best friend, he
remembered having a few terible experiences while flying at night. That led him to research unmanned
plane systems. Then. Xu formed Rotor Technologies in 2O2l to develop unmanned helicopters.
Rotor has built two unmanned helicopters that the company calls Sprayhawks, Rotor aims to
have as many as 20 Sprayhawks ready for market next year. The company is also developing
efficient(高效的) helicopters that would fly materials into areas struck by earthquakes. The
helicopters could also be used to fight wildfires.
For now, Rotor is paying attention to farming. A major attraction of automation(自动化)in
farming flights is safety. Because special airplanes fly at around 24O kph and only about 3 meters
off the ground, there are tens of accidents(事故) each year. The small planes hit power lines cell
towers and other planes. Older planes in disrepair and pilot tiredness play a part in accidents.
In recent years, safety and cost concerns have led to a number of drones flying above farmers'
fields. But the size of the drones means they can only work over a small amount of the area that a
plane or helicopter can. This is providing an opening for companies building bigger unmanned
planes like Rotor.
Companies like Rotor have developed their systems to work even when bad events come up.
D. Botor's
helicopter, for example, has a half-dozen communication systems and, for now, a pilot in control.
If the ground team can't get in touch with the helicopter, Rotor has a system to dispose of it. The
system makes sure the engine can be turned off and the helicopter can perform a controlled landing

Many travelers face a common problem: jet lag(时差反应). 36 It usually results froma
difference in daylight hours, especially in a long distance travel. Here are some tips on how to deal
with jet lag.
37 There are many ways to do so. One of them is very expensive. That is, paying a lot for
a bigger seat and more space in an airplane can prevent sleep deprivation(缺乏). Most people
can't afford so much money to travel. But scheduling flights properly can help. For example,
flying from Europe to North America during the day so that when passengers land, it is night and
they can sleep. If you take the evening flight instead, you'll be woken up at midnight to be served
breakfast and land an hour or two later. 38
Being in sunlight is important to setting your body clock again. That could mean either
avoiding the morning sun or seeking it out, depending on where you started. Getting light in the
morning will move your body clock forward. Sleeping for a short time during the day is okay, but
scientists warn against sleeping for longer periods later in the day. 39
Business travelers might want to consider arriving a day or two ahead of any important meetings
or events. Being jet-lagged can lead to unwise decisions and unpleasant feelings. Tourists might not
need to think as clearly as business travelers. 40 Tourists are advised to get enough sleep
before doing anything that might be dangerous or that requires a lot of attention, like driving.
A. Yet they should still be careful.
B. It is the feeling of tiredness people get when traveling
C. Doing so might make it harder to sleep through the night
D. If the light doesn't work, there's another way: drink coffee.
E. People who travel long distances often want to prevent jet lag.
F. In this case, both jet lag and sleep deprivation can seriously affect you
G. Nobody wants to miss the fun because they are too tired to enjoy their vacation.

It was a beautiful day, and James, who was in his last year of college, took a flight to visit his
uncle in New York. James was studying medicine and he wanted to become a doctor like his uncle.
But he thought he was not good enough and still had much to learn.
While waiting at the airport lounge(候机室), James sat beside an elderly woman. At first,
they were busy with their own business. The woman was knitting(织) a scarf. James was reading a
medical journal, eager to increase his knowledge. After a while, the woman's knitting needle
dropped onto the floor. James, noticing this, quickly picked it up for her.
The woman smiled and said, "Thank you, young man. You're very kind." James replied
with a warm smile, "You're welcome." This simple exchange broke the ice between them. They
started chatting, and James learned that the woman was on her way to visit her grandchildren. She
told him stories about her family and how much she missed them: James listened carefully and
shared with her some of his own experiences and dream of becoming a doctor.
Before long, it was time to board the plane. James helped the woman carry her bag and find
her seat. Everything went smoothly and everyone was expecting a dream journey.
As the plane reached its altitude(高度), the workers were busy serving drinks and snacks. It
was quiet in the plane. James just closed his eyes, trying to get some much-needed rest.
After about one and a half hours, the flight was near New York. Suddenly, a call broke the
quietness, "Is there a doctor on board? We have a passenger who is in great need of help now."
James opened his eyes and checked what happened. Then he found that the woman he met at
the airport lounge was lying in her seat. Her face was pale and it seemed that she was in great pain.
