Winter solstice (冬至) is officially the start of a new season. It marks the shortest day and longest night of the year. Here are some ancient winter solstice celebrations and how they’ re marked.
Dongzhi
In Chinese, Dongzhi literally means “winter’s arrival”. Traditionally celebrated as an end-of-harvest festival during the Han Dynasty, today it is an important time to spend with family and eat a hearty meal of tangyuan or dumplings.
Inti Raymi
Peru’s winter solstice is celebrated in June and honors the Incan sun god Inti. Banned during the first years of the Spanish conquest (征服), the festival has since been brought to life and now takes place in the city of Cusco, once the center of the Incan Empire. Festivities include holding feasts and a series of ceremonies.
Shab-e Yalda
For centuries Iranians around the world have gathered on winter solstice to celebrate Yalda, meaning birth or rebirth. In many Central Asian countries, Yalda is a time when loved ones gather to eat, drink, and read poetry and welcome the sun. Nuts and fruits like watermelons are symbolic, as their red colors represent dawn and life.
Toji
In Japan, the winter solstice comes with several rituals (仪式) and customs to welcome the return of the sun. One custom dating back hundreds of years involves taking a hot bath with yuzu, a fruit known for its healing properties. Other traditions include foods containing the “n” sound, as they are believed to bring good luck.

Imagine having the opportunity to sing together with hundreds of other people while you are at home alone. You can do this in a virtual choir (虚拟合唱团). Virtual choir members record themselves while they perform alone on video. These videos are uploaded onto the Internet, and then they are put together into one video that you can see online — a virtual choir. Anyone can take part in a virtual choir from anywhere — all you need is a video camera and an Internet connection.
The virtual choir was the idea of award-winning composer and conductor Erie Whitacre. Born in the USA on 2 January, 1970, Whitacre began studying music at the University of Nevada in 1988. He fell in love with Mozart’s classical music when he sang for the university choir. He graduated from university in 1995, and then received a master’s degree in musical composition in 1997. Over the next 10 years, Whitacre’s original compositions began to become quite popular among choirs and singers. This led to the creation of the virtual choir.
In 2009, Whitacre received a video of a girl who was singing one of his works. Inspired, he asked his fans to make videos, which he then joined together into one performance. His first virtual choir, Lux Aurumque, had 185 singers from 12 different countries. It has received millions of views on the Internet. Since then, the virtual choir has become a worldwide phenomenon. Whitacre’s next effort was the Virtual Youth Choir for UNICEF. Altogether, 2,292 young people from 80 countries joined in to sing Whitacre’s song What If.
A virtual choir helps connect ordinary people together and enables them to add their voices to those of other individuals and become part of the global community. It has proved to be a positive influence on the lives of many people and a wonderful way for people around the world to sing with one voice and thus make the world a better place.
4. What do we know about virtual choir?

D. Its video is a combination of different people singing separately

Certain personalities may help centenarians (百岁老人) reach their advanced age according to a Spanish study.
Lola Merino at the Complutense University of Madrid and her colleagues interviewed 16 women and three men aged between 100 and 107 years across Spain. Detailed analysis of the interviews identified 35 positive personalities in total, eight of which the team considered to be “central” because they were shared by most of the 19 interviewees.
One of these central personalities was vitality, defined as being energetic and participating in activities. One 100-year-old woman told the team how she was staying aged 98 and stays active by giving up elevators and walking up stairs. Commitment to various goals was another personality, with one “very determined” 101-year-old woman recalling an incident four years ago when she broke her hip and was walking unaided only a month or so later. Intelligence, including a good memory and past academic successes, and being in control and able to make your own decisions were other shared personalities. A 100-year-old woman sand: “I’ve always followed my own judgement, even though others told me no, and time has proved me right.”
Finally, the researchers picked up on the participants’ resilience (恢复力). A 101-year-old man said, “I was very close to my wife; I was 97 when she passed away. At first, I was bad off, but then I thought that you have to be strong.”
The study also included centenarians from Spain, but Sunil Bhar, who directs a well-being clinic for older people in Melbourne, Australia, says he sees many of the same personalities. In particular, strong relationships and a “can-do” attitude appear to be important, probably by helping prevent depression, he says. Depression has been linked to a compromised (受损的) immune system and even dementia (痴呆), says Bhar. According to Merino, there are some ways to build up these personalities for people who lack them.
8. How are the “central” personalities illustrated in the passage?
A. By giving examples. B. By listing numbers.
C. By making predictions. D. By making comparisons.
9. Who is most likely to reach his or her advanced age according to the passage?
A. A man who seldom takes part in activities.
B. A man who always follows others’ judgement.
C. A woman who has achieved academic successes.
D. A woman who rarely commits herself to her goals.
10. What can be a suitable title for the passage?
A. Personalities Linked to Long Life B. Vitality Contributing to Long Life
C. Centenarians Living in Spain D. Advice Given by Centenarians
11. What might the author continue talking about?
A. How to deal with depression.
B. How to develop a “can-do” attitude.
C. How to build up strong personal relationships.
D. How to develop personalities related to long life.

A study recently published in Science shows that skyglow (天空光) is increasing much faster than expected based on observational data acquired from satellites.
The first author of the study Kyba and colleagues said, the global average increase calculated is in fact 9.6%, almost five times faster than previously believed. The two continental areas most polluted by artificial light, North America and Europe, see annual growth of 10.4% and 6.5%, respectively. Kyba declares that if the skyglow continues to increase at the current rate, a child born in a place where there are 250 stars will be able to see no more than 100 on his/ her18th birthday and will not see any more before reaching middle age.
The skyglow problem is no less serious than the pollution of the air we breathe or the plastic that adds in the seas and ends up in the food chain. All the great civilizations of the past have developed thanks to the vision of the celestial vault (天穹) and the cyclical (周期的) phenomena it shows. Agriculture, herding, navigation, and several other human activities have benefited greatly from viewing the night sky. We would know practically nothing about the universe if we hadn’t had the opportunity, until now, to observe it and to analyze the light that comes from everything in it.
The view of the starry sky, a common human legacy (遗产) over thousands of years, has been all but lost to most people now living in urban and suburban settings. It is estimated that over 80% of the world’s population live in an urban environment that is so brightened by artificial light as to have negative effects on their health: sleep disturbances, obesity, and some other types of diseases. And it’s not just humans who suffer from light pollution. Nocturnal (夜间活动的) animals, in particular, find themselves forced to change their habits or habitats. Skyglow can also affect the timing of migrations (迁徙) and other seasonal behaviors by disrupting biological clocks.
Only the most ignorant human beings can think that artificial light is only progress and not even a problem that needs to be solved as much as possible. Unfortunately, ignorance generates more ignorance.
12. What can be inferred according to Kyba?
A. The skyglow will definitely increase at the same rate.
B. Europe sees annual growth of 10. 4% in artificial light.
C. Fewer stars will be seen if skyglow continues to increase.
D. The previous global average increase of skyglow was about 48%.
13. What does the author want to say by mentioning human activities like agriculture?
A. The increase of skyglow in recent years.
B. The significance of viewing the night sky.
C. The seriousness of air and plastic pollution.
D. The necessity of knowing about the universe.
14. Which is closest in meaning to “disrupting” in paragraph 4?
A Setting. B. Adjusting. C. Slowing. D. Disturbing.
15. What is the writer’s attitude towards the result of the study?
A. Unclear. B. Uncaring. C. Concerned. D. Approving.

How to Build Self-Confidence
Self-confidence: one’s belief that they can meet all the demands of a task. Some people are born with it, and everyone else is out of luck, right? Wrong! Self-confidence is not something people are born with, like their height or hair color. ____16____
One simple self-confidence builder is positive self-talk. What you say to yourself influences how you feel about yourself. Telling yourself “I can’t do anything right” or asking “Why did I even try?” could ruin you. ____17____ Rather than focusing on your failure, identify ways that you can improve, and try again.
Another way to boost your confidence is to believe in yourself. ____18____ If you put in the work to learn how to do something, believe in your ability. Don’t let doubt steal your energy and motivation away.
____19____ Thinking that you are better than other people won’t give you confidence. Instead, it will make you arrogant (傲慢的). And thinking you are worse than others won’t make you humble (卑微的); it will fill you with envy. Fight back by counting your blessings. Keep a gratitude journal and write down all the things that you’ re thankful for.
Facing your fears is another way to build self-confidence. You might have a talent for public speaking. ____20____ Even if you fail, leaving your comfort zone can make you stronger. Don’t let fear become an obstacle in your journey toward excellence!
Finally, showing kindness to others is a great way to build self-confidence. Showing kindness reminds you that you can make a difference in the world. When you make others feel good, you, in turn, feel good about yourself.
A. It is mainly determined by our genes
B. It’s a skill that anyone can start practicing today.
C. Then what exactly can you do to get over your fear?
D. But how will you know if you never overcome your fears and try it?
E. One of the ugliest enemies of self-confidence is comparing yourself to others.
F. Studies show that a strong belief in yourself can increase your chance of success.
G. Instead, if you get a very bad grade on a test, try saying “I will do better next time.”

Everyone wants to be a cheerleader (拉拉队员). Every girl wants the chance to shine, to have all eyes on her, to be the one to wear the uniform, be part of the school sports team. Everyone wants to be a cheerleader but not everyone gets the chance.
In the fall of my senior year in high school, I was faced with more pressure than I knew how to handle. My friends and I were applying to college, taking the college admissions tests and writing essays. It was in the midst of these other pressures that cheerleading tryouts (选拔) for the sports team took place every year.
Out of the many who tried out, only ten special senior girls made it. I knew I had to be one of them.
My younger sister, Molly, started high school that year. I thought she would have it especially easy since I had already told her everything to expect: which teachers to fear, which courses were easy.
The first few weeks of school were filled with tension for me With everything going on, I admit I wasn’t too attentive (关注的) to Molly. Still, I waited for her every afternoon in the parking lot to drive her home. I thought that was enough for her, getting a ride instead of having to take the bus, like many of the other freshmen.
Cheerleading practice was held after school and sometimes ran long during those weeks before the tryouts. However late I was, Molly always waited for me, watching me from the distance.
On Friday morning, the day of the tryout, I drove Molly to school as usual. Molly must have sensed my nervousness and didn’t say anything the whole ride to school. But when she got out of the car she handed me a note, saying, “No matter what happens today, whether you make the team or not, I think you are the best sister in the world.”

Dear Alex,
How is everything going with you? You mentioned an interest in Li Bai, a luminary of the Tang Dynasty. He was born in 701 AD and led a life full of wanderings. These travels colored his poetry, which is known for its rich imagery and impassioned expression. Whether painting landscapes or voicing ambitions, his lines leap off the page. Even today, his works are pillars of Chinese literature, captivating readers globally and preserving the allure of the Tang age.
Yours,
Li Hua

Finally, the moment of the tryout came. The gym was filled with nervous energy as girls practiced their routines, their voices echoing off the walls. I took a deep breath, trying to calm the butterflies in my stomach. As the music started, I focused on every move, every jump, every cheer. I gave it my all, pouring my heart and soul into the performance. When it was over, I felt a mix of relief and anxiety, wondering if I had done enough.
With excitement, I couldn’t wait to meet Molly. I rushed out of the gym, my heart pounding with anticipation. There she was, waiting for me with a smile on her face. “How did it go?” she asked eagerly. I told her everything, the nerves, the performance, the uncertainty. She listened intently, her eyes filled with admiration. “You did your best, and that’s all that matters,” she said, hugging me tightly. In that moment, I realized how lucky I was to have a sister like Molly, whose support meant everything to me.
