With a background in the arts, Danielle Ross knew she wanted a creative, hands-on job, but she never thought she’d be using toys on a daily basis for work.
When Ross started her new role two years ago, she made history as the first female master builder for the LEGOLAND New York Theme Park. She spends her days creating and maintaining the park’s 15,000 Lego (乐高) models with a focus on adding “all kinds of diversity that’s represented in the real world,” she said, especially at Miniland, the small model country of 10 destinations in the US.
Every day, Ross and the rest of the model shop do their rounds around the park to make sure everything looks perfect and repair anything that goes wrong. She works on a team of eight and is one of the four master builders. The rest of the team comprises two animators, a manager and a designer. When it’s a big model, it takes the entire team’s cooperation. “We each build a part of it. It is like putting together a puzzle,” she said.
Sometimes the team has to figure out how to build new models when there aren’t the most obvious Lego piece choices, and they need to be creative and assess what the needs are. “You have to figure out how to build something using other pieces,” she said. “It is like an equation (等式) — think of how six can be made with three and three or four and two. It always turns out perfect in the end.”
“Being out in the park is great,” Ross said. “I want to inspire all kids to follow what they want to do and see they can have a fun, exciting job.” She also makes sure she creates models of all types of people so everyone feels represented at the park.
4. What is Ross’s job in the park?
A. Organizing field trips.
B. Designing and promoting new toys.
C. Introducing famous destinations.
D. Building and maintaining Lego models.
5. What do we know about Ross’s team?
A. It is a large team.
B. It usually works on big models.
C. Cooperation is sometimes required.
D. The members love solving puzzles together.
6. What does Ross want to explain by mentioning the equation?
A. The process of assessing the needs.
B. The various ways of building Lego models.
C. The importance of learning maths well.
D. The obvious choices of building models.
7. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. Ross’s career advice.
B. Lego model types in the future.
C. The meaning of Ross’s job.
D. Lego’s inspiration for kids’ future career
D 5. C 6. B 7. C

As I write, I have 101 unread WhatsApp messages, 254 unread iPhone messages, and 46,252 unread emails across three separate accounts. For me, Inbox Zero is a faraway goal.
But it is the WhatsApp messages, specifically the WhatsApp group chats, that terrorize me the most. If I were a woman of courage, I would simply exit these chats, but I feel the weight of social obligation, and so I remain. I am not the only person to feel this way. Last month, WhatsApp bowed to public pressure and announced that users would be able to exit groups invisibly, without informing other members of their decision.
“I am probably on the wrong side of history on this,” says Danny Groner, 39, a marketing director from New York. “Just to be clear. It’s not about my cousins.” Groner is referring to a 25-strong WhatsApp group composed of his first and second cousins. It is a space to keep up with family news.
“Everyone is well-meaning,” says Groner. “But I wasn’t getting any value out of it.” Groner has left the group three times. Each time, a cousin has added him back in, usually to wish him a happy birthday or happy anniversary, and Groner has gone straight back out again.
Although Groner is often told that he is rude, he is also an unlikely hero for the WhatsApp group resistance. “I have so many people telling me that the chats reduce them to an army of modern-day Mrs Bennets and that they wish they could get out of groups, but they’re afraid they’ll offend people if they leave.”
It is worth remembering that WhatsApp, if used within due limits, can play a positive role in connecting people, says Gazit, a lecturer in information science at Bar-Ilan University in Israel. “I am a member of a WhatsApp group of moms,” Gazit says. “We discuss the issue of new motherhood, they provide me with support when I need it, and we exchange information. It’s great,” Irene, a 41-year-old marketing strategist from London, says, “If something needs to be coordinated (协调), I’d set up a WhatsApp group for that specific reason. But I’d delete it afterward.”
8. How does the author feel when exiting a WhatsApp group?
A. Relieved. B. Stressed. C. Determined. D. Disappointed.
9. What does the underlined part in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Resisting the WhatsApp group.
B. Cutting off connections with relatives.
C. Being unresponsive to group messages.
D. Removing a member from the family chat group.
10. Why does Groner leave his family chat group?
A. It is valueless to stay. B. Some members are rude.
C. He has nothing to say there. D. There are too many messages to handle.
11. What can we learn about WhatsApp from the stories of Gazit and Irene?
A. Getting out of it is unwise. B. It does more bad than good.
C. Its new feature is necessary. D. Using it wisely is the key.
B 9. A 10. A 11. D

Most people hate mosquitoes — but scientists are about to build a “mosquito factory” to release modified mosquitoes.
The modified mosquitoes carry a bacterium called Wolbachia pipientis which can be naturally found in most insect species. However, it’s rarely discovered in mosquitoes. “We actually grow these mosquitoes that contain the bacterium,” Scott O’Neil. An Australian scientist who is involved in the project, told CBC News. When the modified mosquitoes are released, they slowly spread the bacterium to the population.
Several studies have demonstrated the insects’ success. For example, a controlled experiment in Indonesia showed that the modified insect helped reduce the cases of the disease dengue by 77 percent, according to a study paper published in 2021.
The World Mosquito Program has announced that it will release modified mosquitoes in many of Brazil’s urban areas over the next 10 years. The aim is to protect up to 70 million people from diseases such as dengue, a disease mainly spread by mosquitoes. Dengue patients may have mild symptoms like fever, but severe cases can lead to death.
Brazil has one of the highest rates of dengue infection in the world, according to the Nature website. “More than 1,000 people died of dengue in 2022 because of the spread of mosquitoes. It’s going everywhere,” Luciano Moreira, a scientist at the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, told CBC News.
Another way to prevent mosquitoes from spreading diseases is by producing genetically modified (GM转基因的) mosquitoes. In 2022, the US Environmental Protection Agency cleared the release of 2.4 billion GM mosquitoes in California and Florida.
According to the agency, GM mosquitoes carry two types of genes: a self-limiting gen that prevents female offspring from surviving to adulthood, and a marker gene that allows researchers to identify GM ones in the wild. After being released, GM mosquitoes lay eggs, so the genes are passed on to offspring. In this way, the number of female mosquitoes is reduced, therefore reducing the chance of spreading disease.
12. Why are the modified mosquitoes grown according to Scott O’Nei?
A. To spread one of bacteria. B. To make money for the scientists involved.
C. To reduce the number of insects in the world. D. To prevent mosquitoes from biting people.
13. What can we infer from the experiment in Indonesia mentioned in the text?
A. Dengue is not a serious disease in Indonesia.
B. Modified mosquitoes have no effect on dengue.
C. Mosquitoes in Indonesia are not carriers of dengue.
D. Modified mosquitoes can significantly decrease dengue cases.
14. What does the underlined word “cleared” in paragraph 6 mean?
A. Removed. B. Approved. C. Cleaned. D. Blocked.
15. What might be the best title for the text?
A. The Benefits of GM Mosquitoes B. Modified Mosquitoes to Fight Diseases
C. Genetic Engineering in Medical Research D. The World GM Mosquito Program’s Success
A 13. D 14. B 15. B

Born in London on 28 November 1772, Luke Howard was interested in the weather from an early age ____16____ He was instead easily distracted (分心) by the clouds he could see through the window. He started his career as a pharmacist, producing and sending out medicines for people. ____17____ He soon became an amateur meteorologist
In 1802, Howard presented his research in a lecture to the Askesian Society, a club for people who were interested in science. At this point, meteorology hadn't progressed as much as other sciences, because it was difficult to take observations when the weather was always changing. To take his observations, Howard did sketches (草图) of the clouds as they moved and changed in the sky. ____18____
Howard suggested that although the shapes of clouds were changing, there were three basic types of clouds in the sky, to which he gave Latin names. ____19____. The second was“cumulus”, meaning heap (一堆) or pile. And the third was “stratus”, meaning layer or sheet. He also introduced four other cloud types to recognize the changing clouds when they are joining together or breaking apart. In 1803, he published his research in a paper called “On the Modifications of Clouds”.
After the publication of Howard's research, the field of meteorology continued to develop. Scientists now have a much greater understanding of weather patterns (模式) all around the world. ____20____ Professor Liz Bentley, Chief Executive of the Royal Meteorological Society, said, “His scientific work helped us understand our climate.”
A. There are now 10 types of clouds.
B. But his true passion was meteorology.
C. But it was Howard's work that started it all.
D. He couldn't stay focused when he was at school.
E. This helped him to recognize the forms we know today.
F. Howard's findings also inspired the artist John Constable.
G. The first was called “cirrus”, which means tendril or hair in Latin.

Electric vehicle giant BYD recently launched a new charging system in China, gaining it an advantageous position in the world’s auto market. 【
故填the。
故填where。
本句是“It/This is the first time that...” 故填has been achieved。
故填but。
have has yet to do sth.“尚未做某事”,固定搭配,所以空处需用动词不定式。故填to confirm。
本句中的条件状语从句完整句子为if it is popularized,省略it is,保留过去分词。故填popularized。

Snowflake Bentley
In the days when Vermont farmers worked the land and spent time with livestock, there lived a boy Willie Bentley who loved snow more than anything in the world. Vermont is no stranger to snow and Bentley’s happiest days were snowstorm days. He watched snowflakes (雪花) on his glove, on the vast farm fields, and on the dark metal handle of the barn (谷仓) door. He said snow was the blessings of Nature. However, he could not share snowflakes because he could not save them.
Later, when his mother gave him an old microscope, he mainly used it to look at snow. While kids of his neighbors chased hens and had snowball fights, Willie was catching snowflakes. Day after stormy day he studied the icy crystals (冰晶).
Their delicate patterns were even more beautiful than he had imagined. Willie decided he must find a way to save snowflakes so others could see their wonderful designs. For three winters he tried drawing snow crystals. They always melted in the black tray (托盘) that he used to catch them before he could finish the drawings.
When he was sixteen, Willie read of a camera with its own microscope. “If I had that camera I could photograph snowflakes,” he told his mother. Willie’s mother knew that he would not be happy until he could share what he had seen.
“Spending time on snow is just foolishness,” his mother said. Still, she loved his son. When Willie was seventeen his parents spent their savings and bought the camera. It cost as much as ten cows. Willie was sure. it was the best of all cameras.

Nevertheless, in those days no one cared. Neighbors laughed at the idea of photographing snow. But Willie was not disheartened. He firmly believed the photographs would be his gift to the world. He gave copies away to neighbors or sold them for some money to help out his parents. He even wrote about snow and published his pictures in magazines. Soon, Bentley was beginning to make a name for himself. Flocks of journalists reached out to him for interviews and eventually the nickname “Snowflake Bentley” was born.
Despite the new-found fame, Snowflake Bentley simply made up his mind to produce a perfect photo. Whenever it snowed, he would wait hours for just the right crystal. While neighbors sat by the fireplace, Willie stood at the barn door and held out the black tray to catch flakes. Through trial and error, he learned to produce photos of better quality. One day, Bentley worked his magic and eventually developed a perfectly clear photograph. The young man was overjoyed and immediately presented it to his folks. “I was wrong about your work, son. This is marvelous!” said his mother. A smile of pride flickered across Snowflake Bentley’s face, for he knew he had forever captured the beauty of nature.
