Four Most Beautiful Lakes in the World
Lake Ohrid
Ancient Lake Ohrid has been around for about five million years and straddles (横跨) the mountainous border between Macedonia and Albania. It has unique plants and wildlife, including the “plashica”, a fish native to the lake.
Phewa Lake
Phewa Lake in Nepal is famed for its still crystal-clear waters, which offer a picture-perfect reflection of Mount Machapuchare. Belonging to the Annapurna range of peaks in the Himalayas, Machapuchare is honored by locals and climbing it is forbidden. Visitors can take a boat to an island in the middle of the lake that is home to the eighteenth-century Hindu Tal Barahi temple.
Lake Maggiore
Surrounded on three sides by the Lipontine Alps and touching the plain of Lombardy to the south, Lake Maggiore is Italy’s longest lake. Considered part of the country’s lake district — which also includes lakes Como, Garda and Lugano — it is shared with Switzerland.
Five Flower Lake
Set in the Jiuzhaigou Valley in Sichuan province of China, Five Flower Lake is extraordinarily clear, with visibility to a depth of 40 metres revealing ancient fallen trees on the lakebed. It differs from the others as its waters change color, looking sometimes yellow, sometimes green, but usually diamond blue. In winter, Five Flower never freezes; in summer, it never dries up, which is truly unlike other lakes.
1. Where is Phewa Lake?
A. In China. B. In Nepal. C. In Albania. D. In Macedonia.
2. Which of the following is Italy’s longest lake?
A. Phewa Lake B. Lake Ohrid. C. Lake Maggiore. D. Five Flower Lake.
3. What is special about Five Flower Lake?

As Cary Fowler and Geoffrey Hawtin began thinking about ways to prevent hunger and protect the world’s food supply, they came up with an idea of building a global seed vault (种子库) into the side of an Arctic mountain.
About 20 years ago, Fowler, now the US special envoy for Global Food Security, and Hawtin, an agricultural scientist from the United Kingdom, imagined the vault as a backup spot for seeds that could be used to breed (培育) new crops if existing seed banks were threatened by wars, climate change or other crises. On Thursday, officials in Washington announced that Fowler and Hawtin were named the winners of the 2024 World Food Prize for their work and would share a $500,000 award.
“To a lot of people today, it sounds like a perfectly reasonable thing to do. It’s a valuable natural resource and you want to offer strong protection for it,” Fowler said. “But fifteen years ago, shipping a lot of seeds to the closest place to the North Pole that you can fly into and putting them inside a mountain — that’s the craziest idea anybody ever had.”
The Svalbard Global Seed Vault they created opened in 2008 and now holds 1.25 million seed samples (样本) from nearly every country. The structure was built into the side of a mountain, providing protection for over 6,000 varieties of crops and culturally important plants.
Fowler and Hawtin said they hoped winning the World Food Prize would help them raise more money for seed banks around the world. Operating them is not too costly. However, the financial support needs to continue forever. “This is really a chance to get that message out and say, look, this relatively small amount of money is our insurance policy that we’re going to be able to feed the world in 50 years,” Hawtin said.
4. Why did Fowler and Hawtin win the 2024 World Food Prize?
A. They planted lots of crops. B. They built a seed vault.
C. They invented varieties of seeds. D. They provided food for the hungry.
5. What can be learned about Fowler and Hawtin?
A. Their seed vault is near the South Pole. B. Their work has gained wide support.
C. They each received a $500,000 award. D. They protect two million seed samples.
6. What does Hawtin want to stress in the last paragraph?
A. It is wise to fund seed banks. B. It is necessary to save money.
C. It is difficult to feed the world. D. It is expensive to operate seed banks.
7. Which word can best describe Fowler and Hawtin?
A. Peace-loving. B. Warm-hearted. C. Hard-working. D. Far-sighted.
【答案】4. B 5. B 6. A 7. D

细节理解题。根据第二段“About 20 years ago, Fowler, now the US special envoy for Global Food Security, and Hawtin, an agricultural scientist from the United Kingdom, imagined the vault as a backup spot for seeds that could be used to breed (培育) new crops if existing seed banks were threatened by wars, climate change or other crises. On Thursday, officials in Washington announced that Fowler and Hawtin were named the winners of the 2024 World Food Prize for their work and would share a $500,000 award.(大约20年前,现任美国全球粮食安全特使的福勒和来自英国的农业科学家霍廷设想,如果现有种子库受到战争、气候变化或其他危机的威胁,这个种子库可以作为种子的备用地点,用于培育新作物。周四,华盛顿官员宣布,福勒和霍廷因其工作而获得2024年世界粮食奖,并将分享50万美元的奖金)”可知,Fowler和Hawtin获得2024年世界粮食奖是因为他们建立了种子库。故选B。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“The Svalbard Global Seed Vault they created opened in 2008 and now holds 1.25 million seed samples (样本) from nearly every country.(他们创建的斯瓦尔巴全球种子库于2008年开放,现在拥有来自几乎每个国家的125万份种子样本)”可知,Fowler和Hawtin的工作得到了广泛的支持。故选B。

How does social media affect our life today?
A lot of people believe that social media is just torture for kids and young adults, which in a way it is. It doesn’t allow them to be 100% themselves and it can cause them to overthink and become more anxious and less confident.
Social media has caused people to rethink everything they do online from liking or posting a photo to sharing a post in case someone thinks that what they support or enjoy is meaningless. Do you know that selfies (自拍) are one of the most frequent causes of death of the modern generation? In 2015, it was reported that a 21-year-old girl fell down a mountain just for selfies. There is a lot of such news every day, and that statistic is increasing every day.
With this generation, very few of them are speaking to each other directly because of communication on social media like messages. This can cause social anxiety for many people; they slowly lose their skills of how to speak to others face to face. I know it first-hand and it was difficult to tell myself that I needed to cut down on screen time and even harder to listen and do it.
At the same time, there are a lot of positives on social media. Social media is a great way to connect with people who live far away, which has really helped people come together and feel less lonely if they live alone. You can express yourself by sharing your favorite songs or posting pictures of your new outfit. It’s much harder to feel embarrassed online than in person, so it’s easier for people to express their feelings on social media.
Social media is also great for raising awareness about things like charities. It is a powerful tool for people to share their stories, reaching new audiences around the world. The list of movements is getting longer and longer every day as more and more people use social media to raise awareness and promote the movements.
In conclusion, social media has its advantages and disadvantages like everything else does. It’s all about how we use it.

The 3D printer BioHome3D has once created a house. Now, an even larger printer called Factory of the Future 1.0 (FoF 1.0) shown on April 23 at the University of Maine Advanced Structures and Composites Center (ASCC) may one day create entire neighborhoods.
The new printer fills up the large building in which it’s housed on the Maine campus, and can print objects 96 feet long by 32 feet wide by 18 feet high (29 meters by 10 meters by 5.5 meters). It is four times larger than BioHome3D, which was put into use less than five years ago, and capable of printing ever larger objects. It consumes as much as 500 pounds of material per hour.
To meet the growing demand for housing, Maine alone will need another 80,000 homes over the next six years, according to MaineHousing. The new printer can offer a pathway for affordable housing to address homelessness in the region by promoting its 3D-printed home technology using bio-based materials. As for the original 3D printer, BioHome3D, it isn’t going away. The two printers can be used to work on the same project and there will be even more of them working together in the future.
The university wants to show how homes can be constructed nearly entirely by a printer with a lower carbon footprint. Such printed buildings can be recycled, which is unique compared to current construction. “You can basically break it up if you wish, reprint with the 3D printed parts, and do it again,” Habib Dagher, director of UMaine’s ASCC, said.
Since 2022, the ASCC has secured more than $93 million in support of this creative and other projects. “The US government provided most of the funding for the new printer, which cost several million dollars,” said Dannel Malloy, chancellor of the University of Maine System.
12. What can we learn about FoF 1.0?
A. It can print huge objects. B. It will replace BioHome3D.
C. It was put into use five years ago. D. It has created entire neighborhoods.
13. What do we know about the houses created by FoF 1.0 according to the text?
A. They are small in size. B. They let out no greenhouse gas.
C. Their materials can be reused. D. Their price is high for most people.
14. What does the last paragraph want to tell us?
A. The new printer is far from cost-effective. B. The funding situation of printers may get worse.
C. The University of Maine needs creative talents. D. The projects at the ASCC have been funded.
15. Which is the best title for the text?
A. The History of Printing Industry
B. The Introduction of BioHome3D
C. The Homeless in the US That Need Help
D. A New and Larger 3D Printer Invented by UMaine’s ASCC

Anyone with a story to tell can write a book, either for their own enjoyment or to publish for all to see. The following are some tips to help you.
Understand why you’re writing a book. Before you start writing or even thinking about your book, be honest with yourself about your reasons for writing it. ___16___? Or do you simply have a great story that you want to share with the world?
___17___ There’s no one ideal workspace for every writer. Some prefer a quiet room, while others work best in a coffee shop. Also, make sure that the place you choose works with your preferred writing medium. If you want to write on a desktop, make sure to have a suitable desk nearby. ___18___. That’s because it’s easy to lose focus if your back aches.
Establish daily and weekly writing goals. Instead of hoping to produce ten pages at a time, try setting a goal to write one page each day. Set your writing goal based on your writing speed and any specific deadlines. ___19___
Get feedback often. You might have a group of fellow writers, friends or family members with whom you can share your works in progress. It is likely that you’ll go through many rounds of feedback and revisions before your book is published. ___20___ — it’s all part of the process of writing the best book you can!
A. Don’t get discouraged
B. Choose a workspace that works for you
C. Is it necessary to further your education
D. And try not to change it after you’ve set it
E. Break your big idea into manageable pieces
F. Do you dream of seeing your name on a book cover
G. At the same time, remember to pick a supportive chair

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My parents took me to join the teen group at the community center last summer. Boys and girls from different schools were in the same group. That sounded scary to me because I was afraid of connecting with strangers. I was ready to run back to my hideout at the neighborhood library, but my parents insisted.
The first meeting was an ice-breaker program. We were divided into teams, given our lists, and sent out into the neighborhood to find our target items. Time was running out on our quest as we came to the only item missing: a campaign button (竞选徽章) which looks great on shirts, jackets, caps or bags and will stand out as people get into the campaign spirit.
The team was about to call our task done when I finally found the courage to speak up. “How about going to the television studio for the button?” I asked. “They have lots of politicians as guests.”
My team leader agreed and we made our way to the studio. I took a deep breath and headed into the hall. A young man looked up from his position behind a big desk.
“Can I help you?” he asked.
I explained why I was in need of a campaign button. “Please, would you happen to have one?”
He smiled and then searched around in his desk for a few minutes.
“Sorry, I don’t have one,” he said.
“Thanks for trying,” I said and turned away.
“Wait a minute,” he said. “Let me see if one of the staff might have one.”
A few minutes later, a figure came out. This was an icon of New Orleans television: Hap Glaudi. He was my favorite sportscaster (体育比赛解说员).
“Young lady you are so lucky.” His voice sounded every bit as friendly and kind as he did on the air. “I have a campaign button from the previous year’s presidential election.”
He approached me and handed it to me. Feeling embarrassed, I asked in a low voice, “Can I really take it?”
“Of course you can! I’m serious!” he replied immediately and looked at me in the eye.

This experience has made a difference to me.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
I thanked him and left. When I brought the campaign button to the team, they whooped at my success. We ran back to the community center to check in. Our team won that night by one item. We had the only campaign button in the competition. My contribution got me “in” with the group. Over the next few weeks, I got along very well with the boys and girls there.
This experience has made a difference to me. Thanks to the two helpful people I met in the television studio, I’ve found the courage I once lacked to approach people ever since that day, for example, when having interviews or asking for donations. I’ve realized that as long as I treat people politely and respectfully, other people will probably respond favorably. In addition, I’ve also tried to follow their examples and help where I can.

Phewa Lake
Phewa Lake in Nepal is famed for its still, crystal-clear waters, which offer a picture-perfect reflection of Mount Machapuchare.

A. In China. B. In Nepal. C. In Albania. D. In Macedonia.

C
8. What does the underlined word “torture” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Mental suffering. B. Something relaxing.
C. Physical damage. D. Something unexpected.
9. Why does the author mention the 21-year-old girl?
A. To offer a suggestion. B. To lead in the topic.
C. To make a comparison. D. To provide an example.
10. From the text, we learn the author ________.
A. once fought with his/ her best friends B. used to be addicted to the Internet
C. was injured for taking photos before D. used to participate in charity activities
11. What are paragraph 5 and paragraph 6 mainly about?
A. The meaning of charity. B. The importance of writing stories.
C. The advantages of social media. D. The necessity of reaching audiences.

第二节(满分25分)
“Young lady, you are so lucky.” His voice sounded every bit as friendly and kind as he did on the air. “I have a campaign button from the previous year’s presidential election.”
He approached me and handed it to me. Feeling embarrassed, I asked in a low voice, “Can I really take it?”
“Of course you can! I’m serious!” he replied immediately and looked at me in the eye.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;

I thanked him and left.
