Passage 1
Cricket
I draw in a breath, exhale against the backseat window, and scratch the words THIS STINKS on the fogged glass. Dad peers at me through the rearview mirror. "Jude, this will be a nice opportunity for you to see your grandparents."
The car turns onto a familiar series of dirt roads. The sound of tires on half-frozen gravel crunches below. Every moment we're getting farther from the city. Farther from internet access. Farther from the places where I know how to do stuff.
Mom swivels her head. "Universal Coders will be over another vacation," she says. "Probably even this summer. Then you'll be in the seventh-grade group!"
All my programming buddies will be building complex games at computer camp this week while I'm stuck on the farm. I don't say a word.
Finally, the car pulls into Gran and Mimi's driveway, which stretches in a thin line through the birch, ash, oak, white pine, and maple of the New Hampshire forest. Sky-blue tubes jut out from the trunks of the maples, sending sap into a huge vat far down the slope. I liked visiting the farm on spring breaks before I started doing coding camps and before I knew how badly I could mess things up.
The car engine isn't off when Gran bounds toward us. "You made it!" she hollers. I watch from the backseat as Dad and Mom hug Gran. I slowly grasp my backpack and drag myself out of the car. Gravity seems abnormally strong, like in the game I designed called Life on Jupiter.
"You two deserve a vacation," Gran is saying. "Time to catch your flight! Jude will be fine—he loves being on the farm."
During lunch Mimi asks, "Why so gloomy, Jude?"
I have to hand it to Gran and Mimi. They're really acting as if nothing bad happened during my last visit. Can I ask her how much eyes catch Mimi's?

Passage 2

Mama rolled Papa out into the sunshine in his wheeled chair. A bout of cough wracked his thin frame. The burning pain returned to Asyra's heart, but she turned her attention to the ritual prescribed by Vaori.
The Huntsman stood out of the way, but close enough to watch. Asyra haltingly recited the ancient words on the sheet Vaori had given her. Carefully, she inserted the ivory scale into the heart of the mechanical dragon. A strange mixture of salvaged parts—copper, bits of silver, and iron—the beast glistened under the sun's gaze.
Asyra threw her whole heart into the incantation, like a prayer she hoped the gods would hear. The scale began to glow. Asyra stumbled back as the light brightened and burned her eyes.
The great beast's metal wings screeched, flapping once, twice, three times. Then the creature raised its head. Its bottle-glass eyes burned with a light like the one radiating from its scaled chest.
"Asyra," Papa whispered, his voice hoarse. She ran to his side as the dragon beat its wings. It created a wind that buffeted them all. Asyra slipped her hand into her father's, and he leaned his head against her shoulder. Tears streaked their faces as they watched the dragon rise. Its jaws parted, emitting an eerie, metallic roar that echoed through the village.
The Huntsman shivered, wonder written across his face. Asyra wrapped her arms around Papa and rested her head against his. He sighed. "You did it, Syra."
The dragon darted through the clouds, far above them. And for a moment, Asyra felt as she knew her father felt—like they were with the beast, soaring high on uppermost winds.
"We did it, Papa," she whispered. "We did it."
What did Asyra do to the mechanical dragon?
A. She built it from scratch.
B. She inserted an ivory scale into its heart.
C. She painted it with various colors.
D. She repaired its broken wings.
Which of the following is TRUE about the mechanical dragon?
A. It was made of only one material.
B. Its eyes were made of glass.
C. It didn't move at all.
D. It was a gift from Vaori.
What could be the best title for this passage?

Passage 3

Skeleton-thin cats and dogs rummaged through trash cans lookin' for scraps.
The town park was nothin' but a weedy field with a faded-out sign that said: WELCOME TO GREASY GOPHER GULCH. Even the name of our town sounded nasty.
Townspeople watched me diggin' and laughed. They said I was as crazy as my ol' great-grandpappy. But I didn't listen.
First, I dug east of town. My fingers got red and swollen like cactus apples. I thought about giving up.
But one day my teacher, Miss Booker, stopped me in front of the school. Old paint flaked off the school walls as we talked, fluttering down like snow onto the dead, brown grass.
"Chester," said Miss Booker, "every day I see you out in the desert digging holes. You can't read or write too well, but you do have persistence. And persistence is a good thing to have. I'm proud of you."
Now I wasn't sure what persistence was. But her words made me feel real good inside, like a bowl of steaming hot oatmeal with lots of brown sugar on top. The next thing I knew, I was promising her that when I found the treasure, I'd have the school painted, just for her.
A month later, my hands looked like they'd been fried on a hot griddle. They were covered with blisters. I was digging south of town when billowing clouds tumbled over the mountain peaks. Thunder roared. I high-tailed it home through stinging rain.
I decided to return my overdue books. Inside the library, water dripped through the roof. I set my water-stained books on the counter.
Miss Ledger, the librarian, whispered to me. "Chester, every day I see you outside digging holes. You never return your library books on time, but you never miss a day of digging. You do have diligence, and diligence is a good thing to have. I'm proud of you."
Well, I wasn't sure what diligence was. But her words made me feel soft and smooth inside, like a cup of hot chocolate with extra whipped cream.
The next thing I knew, I was whispering back that when I found the treasure, I'd put a new roof on the library.
"You're a good boy," whispered Miss Ledger. "And you don't have to pay your overdue fines this week."
What did Chester do every day?
A. Read books in the library.
B. Dig holes in the desert.
C. Paint the school walls.
D. Play with cats and dogs.
Which of the following is TRUE about Chester?
A. He was good at reading and writing.
B. He always returned library books on time.
C. He was praised by Miss Booker for his persistence.
D. He wanted to give up digging holes at first.
What could be the best title for this passage?
A. Chester's Daily Life
B. The Treasure Hunt of Chester
C. The Kind Words of Teachers
D. The Town of Greasy Gopher Gulch
The word "it" in the sentence "I high-tailed it home through stinging rain." (Paragraph 11) refers to _.
A. the treasure
B. the town
C. Chester himself
D. the library
答案:
1. B
解析:文中多次提到 “every day I see you out in the desert digging holes”,可知 Chester 每天在沙漠里挖洞,B 选项正确。
2. C
解析:根据文中 “'Chester,' said Miss Booker, 'every day I see you out in the desert digging holes. You can't read or write too well, but you do have persistence. And persistence is a good thing to have. I'm proud of you.'”
