So we weren’t surprised when our little daughter, Kennedi showed early athletic promise. She could easily outrun other kids, while playing with them on the playground. By the time Kennedi started primary school, we signed her up for track training. Slowly but surely, track training took over our lives. We gave up taking vacations so our girl wouldn’t miss any practices. I even stopped Kennedi from swimming with her friends, for I thought she would waste the energy needed for competition. We didn’t ask Kennedi if that was what she wanted. Of course she did! she kept winning, and every kid liked to win. When Kennedi was 13 years old, at a national sports event, she suddenly fell down and ended up lying on the track, screaming in pain. A doctor said, “She worked out too hard that the thick tissue in her knee was torn. she might not run as fast as before.” The doctor kept talking, but I bad a bard time following the words. My feelings were mixed. Was I too strict with my daughter? Was I partly to blame for her injury? Then I realized that my kid needed a mom more than a coach. To our great relief, after a year-long’s strict medical examination, Kennedi almost recovered. She even joined the volleyball team at her high school. And we were gradually back to a busy family schedule. But not everything is the same. We seldom miss vacations anymore, even if that means missing practice. And I’m learning to believe that if my daughter decides not to run track in college, that only means life has something even more wonderful in store. 24. What does the underlined sentence mean in Paragraph 1? A. Kennedi made a promise to be an athlete. B. Kennedi had a gift to be a sports player. C. Kennedi showed great interest in doing sports. D. Kennedi wanted to be an athlete at her early age. 25. What do we know about Kennedi in Primary school? A. Kennedi studied very bard. B. Kennedi could play with her friends freely. C. Kennedi was asked to train by a coach. D. Kennedi spent most of her free time in training. 26. What caused Kennedi’s injury, according to the doctor? A. A serious fall B. Hard exercise. C. Carelessness. D. The running speed. 27. How would Kennedi’s mother feel about her giving up running in the future? A. Wonderful. B. Angry. C. Uncomfortable. D. Acceptable. C Screen time before bedtime may leave people feeling sleepy in the morning. Cell phones, computers and TVs emit (发出) blue light. And exposure to that bluish light during the two hours before bed can keep us from getting a good night’s rest, a new study finds. It cuts down on the length of people’s sleep. It also leaves them feeling tired in the morning and can disrupt the body clock. Data shows that this blue light tends to make us more alert at night, making it harder to get all the rest we need. Green and his team surveyed 19 people — all in their 20s — for a sleep study. All spent two hours on a computer right before bedtime. But they didn’t all experience the same light exposure. Looking at screens that gave off intense blue light cut someone’s sleep by about 16 minutes, compared to when they had used screens with red light. Those exposed to blue light also woke up more often at night than if they had been exposed to red light. “The normal blue light emissions from the computer screen also affect how much melatonin (褪黑素) each volunteer makes. It is released into our blood around 9 p.m. When our bodies make less melatonin, we may still feel too alert at bedtime to fall asleep when the body is tired. And body temperature won’t drop as expected after we use devices emitting lots of blue light. Using screens before bed damages the body’s biological clock,” Green says. “More and more kids are using screens nowadays. Sleep is important, especially during the first few years of life when ‘neural plasticity’ (神经可塑性) is at its greatest. Their brains are still developing the ability to learn and pay attention. That makes the new results worrisome,” Green says. Rahman says that the new work makes a good point about how blue light from screens can be bad for our bodies. However, he points out, the light in this study is extremely bright. It is far brighter than what a normal computer, tablet or TV will emit. Still, Rahman says the results remind us to think about how we should use screens before bed. 28. The blue light from the screens may cause people to ________. A. tend to work at night B. get attentive in the morning C. be less sleepy before bed time D. be affected less by the body clock 29. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about? A. Reasons for blue light’s effects on sleep. B. Effects of various types of light on sleep. C. People’s concern about light exposure. D. A study on blue light’s effects on sleep. 30. What can be implied from Green’s remarks? A. Melatonin may affect people’s neural plasticity. B. Blue light may affect children’s brain development. C. Exposure to normal screen has little impact on sleep. D. The low temperature of body helps produce melatonin. 31. What’s Rahman’s possible attitude towards the Green’s study? A. Objective. B. Approving. C. Uncaring. D. Critical. D Over the last two days in December last year, nearly 30 tornadoes caused great damage across six states——from Arkansas in the south to Illinois in the Midwest. More than 100 tornado warnings were issued——the most ever for a day. The tornado in Kentucky caused at least 50 people’s deaths, which was described as the worst in this state’s history. As one of the largest countries in the world, the United States is also one of the most geographically various countries-from deserts to forests to miles of coast line. While this comes with many advantages, it unfortunately leaves the country easily damaged by all kinds of natural disasters. Different parts of the United States face different types of natural disasters. The west coast is at risk of wildfires, earthquakes, and even volcanic eruptions. The southern part of the country is frequently hit by tornadoes, and the east coast faces the threat of serious hurricanes every year. Midwestern areas near rivers are often flooded by huge floods, and these are the worst floods in American history. The governments reviewed the weather event in each state’s history that caused the highest number of deaths to determine the worst natural disaster in every state. Thanks to their location and geographic research, some states could prepare ahead of time to avoid mass-casualty(重大伤亡的)weather events. However, many other parts of the country have been less fortunate, experiencing massive storms and floods. Many such events, like the 1900 hurricane that hit Galveston of Texas, killed so many people that it was impossible to get an exact number of final deaths, especially during that time. American weather continues to become more changeable. In 2018, there were 14 weather events that caused over $1 billion in damage. And in many parts of the country, these weather events could become even more destructive(毁灭性的)because of global warming. 32. What do we know from the figures in paragraph 1? A. Less and less natural disasters hit America. B. Tornadoes were the least threat to Americans. C. The tornado in Kentucky was the worst in the world. D. America suffered from serious natural disasters. 33. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about? A. The worst floods in American history. B. The earthquakes in the west coast of US. C. The natural disasters in different parts of US. D. The hurricanes along the east coast of US. 34. Which of the following can best describe America’s weather in the future? A. Controllable. B. Worrying. C. Unchangeable. D. Pleasant. 35. What may be the best title for the text? A Common Natural Disasters in the US B. A Weather Report from the US C. Tornadoes Causing Great Damage D. The applause filled my ears. I had done it. I had really done it. Just a few months earlier, I would never have pictured myself acting in a play in front of two hundred people. I found a new person inside me, a much more daring, outgoing person who had been hidden all along, just waiting for the opportunity to appear. If not for my teacher, Mrs Sather, I might never have found that opportunity. In the first and second grade, I was extremely shy. I was afraid I would do or say something wrong, so usually I just smiled and listened to other people’s conversations. I did well in school and I loved to write. However, I would escape into my writing, where I could be myself and never had to worry about what other people thought of me. In my stories, I was never shy. My teacher, Mrs Sather, always encouraged me to write more. She told our class to go after our dreams and dig in with both hands. One day, she announced that our class was going to perform a play she had written.“ I’ll begin to cast everyone tomorrow,” she said.“ I need someone who is not afraid to be on stage in front of a lot of people to play the lead part of Dorothy. Anybody want to try?” A few excited hands shot up --mine, of course, was not one of them — and Mrs Sather smiled.“ We’ll talk more about it tomorrow,” she said. Then the bell rang and my classmates slowly left the classroom. When I was loading up my backpack, Mrs Sather asked me to go to her. Mrs. Sather stared into my eyes as if seeing my inner self locked away inside. ‘‘I would love you to give this a try for me. But if you really don’t want to, I won’t make you. It is your choice. ‘‘ Mrs. Sather wanted me in this role. She shocked me, for I was always a shy person, not even dare to speak loud in public. Hearing Mrs Sather’s words, I realized it was time to make a change. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 福鼎四中2024-2025学年第一学期月考 高 一 英 语 试 题 (考试时间:120分钟 满分150分) 第一部分 听力(共两节,共30分) 第一节(共5小题;每小题1.5分,共7.5分) 听下面5段对话,每段对话后有一个小题,从题中所给的A、B、C三个选项中选出最佳选项,并标在试卷的相应位置。 What are the speakers talking about? In America, May and June are the traditional months for graduations. A listener in China, Wang Ming, who is about to get an engineering degree, wants to know how American college graduates find jobs. Right now, the answer is: not very easily. A latest study on the college job market showed that employers wanted to hire 22% fewer graduates this year than last. The study also showed that just 20% of those who looked for jobs before graduation have found one by now. This is compared to half of students who had looked for a job by this time two years ago. But one difference: fewer of this year’s graduates have started to search for jobs. Engineering graduates were more likely to have started their job search already, and to have accepted a job. This is among the best-paid professions for people with just a college degree. On average, engineering majors expect to start at about $62,000 a year. A With the approaching of New Year, more and more visitors will come to China. 24. A. Objective. B. Approving. C. Uncaring. D. Critical. 28. C 29. D 30. B 31. A. Common Natural Disasters in the US B. A Weather Report from the US C. Tornadoes Causing Great Damage D. A Serious Tornado in Kentucky 【答案】32. D 33. C 34. B 35. 根据首段“Over the last two days in December last year, nearly 30 tornadoes caused great damage across six states-from Arkansas in the south to Illinois in the Midwest. More than 100 tornado warnings were issued-the most ever for a day. The tornado in Kentucky caused at least 50 people’s deaths, which was described as the worst in this state’s history.(在去年12月的最后两天,近30次龙卷风在六个州造成了巨大破坏——从南部的阿肯色州到中西部的伊利诺伊州。发布了100多个龙卷风警告——这是一天以来最多的。肯塔基州的龙卷风造成至少50人死亡,这被描述为该州历史上最严重的龙卷风。)”可以看出,美国很多地区在每年都发生自然灾害,而且在自然灾害中损失很大,还有很多人员伤亡,由此可知,美国自然灾害严重。故选D项。 【33题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第三段中的主题句“Different parts of the United States face different types of natural disasters.(美国不同地区面临不同类型的自然灾害。)” 根据尾段“American weather continues to become more changeable. In 2018, there were 14 weather events that caused over $1 billion in damage. And in many parts of the country, these weather events could become even more destructive(毁灭性的)because of global warming.(美国的天气继续变得更加多变。2018年,发生了14次极端天气事件,造成超过10亿美元的损失。在该国的许多地方,由于全球变暖,这些天气事件可能会变得更加具有破坏性。)”可知,美国的天气持续变得多变,而且很多地区在未来可能变的毁灭性更大,由此可以推断出,美国的未来天气令人担忧。故选B项。 【35题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第二段中的“As one of the largest countries in the world, the United States is also one of the most geographically various countries-from deserts to forests to miles of coast line. While this comes with many advantages, it unfortunately leaves the country easily damaged by all kinds of natural disasters.(作为世界上最大的国家之一,美国也是地理上最多样化的国家之一——从沙漠到森林再到数英里的海岸线。虽然这带来了许多好处,但不幸的是,它使该国很容易受到各种自然灾害的破坏。)”以及第三段的首句“Different parts of the United States face different types of natural disasters.(美国不同地区面临不同类型的自然灾害。)” 故选A项。 How to Fit In with a New Environment When you step into a new environment, you must have a strong wish to fit in. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Hearing Mrs Sather’s words, I realized it was time to make a change. I decided to throw off my shy cloak. I wanted to prove that I also could do something good in public. After seconds of hesitation, I nodded my head, confidently saying ‘‘Mrs Sather I want to, no, I am determined to play the role. And I will try my best to perform it well.’’ Looking at me with a big smile on face, Mrs Sather said ‘‘I believe in you. If you met some problem, you can turn to me.’’ ‘‘Thank you! ‘‘I left her office happily. 词汇激活 行为类 ①决心做:be determined to do/decide to/resolve to do ②证明:prove/certify ③相信:believe in/trust 情绪类 ①害羞的:shy/bashful ②高兴地:happily/gladly 【点睛】[高分句型1] I wanted to prove that I also could do something good in public.
