In this week’s My Story, I’d like to share a true story. Two years ago, Robert, a university student, received a delivery. It wasn’t his birthday and he hadn’t ordered anything, so the delivery left him speechless. Robert phoned the company whose name was on the package. The Customer Service Department couldn’t think of a reasonable explanation why Robert had received a package. In the next few weeks, Robert received deliveries for about 50 products. But when Robert received the unusual items — a large TV and a laptop, he decided to phone the company again. Robert explained that the items were valuable. Then the Customer Service Department realized that the computer system had a problem. The packages were from customers who had returned products to get money back. Unfortunately, they had been given labels with Robert’s address by mistake! The company told Robert that he could keep everything! In the end, Robert decided to give them to charity. He said these things originally didn’t belong to him, so he just hoped that the items went to those who were most in need.

It was the day before Thanksgiving and Kaleb Benham was wandering around outside his home in Noring California. His 90-pound pit bull (斗牛犬), Buddy, was playing around nearby, doing what dogs do: getting into trouble. And this time, Buddy was getting into a whole lot of trouble.
The unmistakable sound that no one wants to hear alone in the woods caught Benham’s attention. It was the deep, strange roar of a black bear. Benham wheeled around to see the beast, which Benham figured weighed around 350 pounds, some 100 feet away. In an instant, the bear fastened on to Buddy’s head and started dragging him away.
Benham, a thin, fit, 24-year-old, took off after them. “Honestly,” he told CBS13, “the only thing I could think of was ‘save my baby’.” He lowered his shoulder and ran quickly towards the bear. But it only seized Buddy tightly. Benham grabbed the bear by the throat. Nothing. He tried getting its mouth open but the jaw was locked tight. Benham resorted to street fighting —punching the bear over and over around its mouth and nose. It worked. The bear dropped the dog and ran off into the woods.
Buddy was in bad shape. His face was bloodied. He had a bite mark clear through his lip and one that barely missed an eye.
“My first thought was that I was going to lose him,” Benham said. He picked up Buddy, put him into his car, and sped off to a nearby veterinarian. Buddy’s surgery took nearly four hours. Benham watched the procedure through a window, waiting for a miracle.
This was the second time Benham had rescued Buddy, says CBS13. The first was from a shelter a few years ago. “If it was your kid, what would you do?” he asked. Nodding toward Buddy, he added, “That’s my kid.”
24. What is the text mainly about?
A. A brave rescue. B. A regular routine.
C A fearless pet dog. D. A demanding surgery.
25. Why did the author mention the weight of the bear in paragraph 2?
A. To prove the excitement of Benham.
B. To describe the fear in Buddy’s heart.
C. To indicate the difficulty of the rescue.
D. To show the bear’s starvation and fierceness.
26. How was the dog finally saved from the bear?
A. Benham defeated the beast by grabbing its throat.
B. Benham ra n towards the beast with dropped shoulder.
C. Benham punched the beast’s mouth and nose repeatedly.
D. Benham forced open the beast’s mouth by unlocking its jaw.
27. What can we know about Benham and Buddy?
A. Buddy once saved Benham.
B. They used to share a shelter.
C. Benham had no kid but Buddy.
D. They had very close relationship.
A 25. C 26. C 27. D
通过阅读文章可知,文章末尾段内容“This was the second time Benham had rescued Buddy, says CBS13.(据CBS13频道报道,这是Benham第二次救Buddy。)” A项“A brave rescue.(一次勇敢的营救。)” 故选A项。
文章第二段内容“Benham wheeled around to see the beast, which Benham figured weighed around 350 pounds...(Benham转过身去看这只野兽,他估计它重约350磅……)”提到了这头熊的体重,而在第三段内容“Benham, a thin, fit, 24-year-old, took off after them.(24岁的Benham身材瘦削,身体健康,紧随其后。)”
根据文章第三段内容“Benham resorted to street fighting —punching the bear over and over around its mouth and nose. It worked. The bear dropped the dog and ran off into the woods.(Benham采取街头斗殴的方式——一遍又一遍地击打熊的嘴和鼻子。这样奏效了。熊丢下狗跑进了树林。)”可知,Benham一遍又一遍地击打熊的嘴和鼻子,使得熊丢下狗逃跑了,从而救出了自己的狗。故选C项。
【27题详解】

From the moment we wake up and check the messages on our smartphones, we’re exposed to text design. Throughout our day, storefronts and websites announce themselves through the typefaces (字体) they use. Adonian Chan, a 33-year-old Hong Kong graphic designer, calls the different texts a “visual landscape”.
In his hometown, signs written in traditional Chinese characters can be found around every comer. One calligraphy style, above all, has come to represent Hong Kong: Beiwei Kaishu, which has its origins in 4th-century China. After World War II, Beiwei Kaishu was used widely in Hong Kong signs, partly because it is highly recognizable, even from far distances.
But with the appearance of LED signs and computer-generated typefaces, signs written in the style were disappearing from Hong Kong. As a result, few designers working today are aware of the Beiwei Kaishu style.
In 2016, Chan asked a master of calligraphy in Hong Kong to teach him to write in the Beiwei Kaishu style. He then started the process of digitizing the characters. He first wrote the characters on paper with a brush and ink. Next, he made a pencil sketch (草图). Finally, he recreated the characters digitally, using a computer program called Glyphs.
One of the main challenges when digitizing the ancient calligraphy is striking a balance between the artistic expression and the need of design, says Chan. He can complete two characters a day, depending on their complexity, and is aiming to digitize 6,000 characters.
Chan says his project is more than preserving a centuries-old writing style and that he sees himself as building on the work of previous generations. He has named his typeface Beiwei Zansyu and hopes it will eventually appear on phones and computers.
28 Why was Beiwei Kaishu popular in Hong Kong after World War II?
A. It had a long history. B. It could be seen clearly.
C. It was a symbol of Hong Kong. D. It fitted in the “visual landscape”.
29. What leads to the disappearance of Beiwei Kaishu?
A. Its pattern. B. Urban development.
C. Its designers. D. New technologies.
30. What can we infer from the last two paragraphs?
A. Beiwei Zansyu will be available soon.
B. Beiwei Zansyu looks great on the phone.
C. Chan’s project is time-consuming.
D. Preserving the ancient style is Chan’s only purpose.
31. Which is the best title for the text?
A. Digitizing Tradition: Adonian Chan’s Journey with Beiwei Zansyu
B. Hong Kong’s Visual Landscape: Beiwei Kaishu in Signs
C. A Disappearing Typeface: Lost Art in the age of Technologies
D. Calligraphy Grisis Technology Saved Art
B 29. D 30. C 31. A
根据第二段中“After World War II, Beiwei Kaishu was used widely in Hong Kong signs, partly because it is highly recognizable, even from far distances. ( 第二次世界大战后,北魏楷书被广泛用于香港的标识中,部分原因是它很容易辨认,即使从很远的地方也能认出来。)”可知,二战后,北魏楷书在香港很受欢迎的原因是它可以被看得很清楚。故选B项。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“But with the appearance of LED signs and computer-generated typefaces, signs written in the style were disappearing from Hong Kong. (但随着LED标识和电脑生成字体的出现,北魏楷书风格的标识正在从香港消失。)”可知,新科技的出现导致北魏楷书的消失。故选D项。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“One of the main challenges when digitizing the ancient calligraphy is striking a balance between the artistic expression and the need of design, says Chan. He can complete two characters a day, depending on their complexity, and is aiming to digitize 6,000 characters. (Chan说,将古代书法数字化的主要挑战之一是在艺术表现和设计需求之间取得平衡。他每天可以完成两个字符,具体取决于它们的复杂性,他的目标是将6000个字符数字化。)”可推知,因为电子化这一字体的复杂性,Chan要完成这项工作将非常耗时。故选C项。
【31题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是由文章第四段“In 2016, Chan asked a master of calligraphy in Hong Kong to teach him to write in the Beiwei Kaishu style. He then started the process of digitizing the characters. He first wrote the characters on paper with a brush and ink. Next, he made a pencil sketch (草图). Finally, he recreated the characters digitally, using a computer program called Glyphs. 故选A项。
D
Drone (无人机) light shows are becoming especially popular in the West. By now, if you live on the U. S. East or West Coasts, you’ve probably been troubled by wildfire smoke. The fires are increasing in frequency and intensity as climate change worsens. And fireworks, as you can guess from their name, cause fires — more than you might think.
That’s what caused a handful of California towns to quit fireworks and turn to drones last year. Sydney, Australia, known for its massive fireworks display, is considering doing the same due to the risk of wildfires. And fire danger is now top of mind for many U. S. cities as the Independence Day, or the American national day, nears.
In addition to reducing the risk of fires, drone light shows present a safer alternative for the folks behind the curtain. Fireworks injured more than 10,000 people last year because they can accidentally erupt while on the ground. Drones won’t. And since light shows are required to keep the ground below the show clear, there’s no risk of a drone falling from the sky into the crowd.
Drones are also less disturbing, creating only a light buzzing noise. Fireworks, on the other hand, can burst your eardrum if you’re standing close enough. That’s a nuisance for some families with animals, small children, or other people who are sensitive to noise.
But perhaps the biggest reason for the switch to drones is that they’re thought to be greener. Besides starting fires, firework smoke leaves behind a trail of harmful chemicals and is considered a pollutant. Drones are also a reusable option, capable of flying potentially hundreds of shows before they even require maintenance. That’s a huge benefit to the environment — and to the companies paying to put on these performances.
At the end of the day, though, some cities are likely switching to drones simply because they’re cooler. That’s not to say that fireworks aren’t cool. But drones allow for more creativity, with the ability to synchronize (同步) lights to music and recreate complex images in the sky.
Nevertheless, it’s still too early to rush to the conclusion that drones will completely take the place of fireworks in the near future.
32. Why are fireworks given up in some towns?
A. They are too expensive. B. They bring along fire risks.
C. They speed up climate change. D. They are not cool any more.
33. How does the author develop paragraph 3?
A. By making a comparison. B. By analyzing causes and effects.
C. By giving a definition. D. By referring to data from previous studies.
34. What does the underlined word “nuisance” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Reward. B. Attraction. C. Instance. D. Annoyance.
35. What will the author probably continue to talk about?
A. The potential challenges drones will face.
B. The similarities shared by drones and fireworks.
C. The importance of drones in promoting economy.
D. The strong competition from companies in different industries.
B 33. A 34. D 35. A

根据第一段中“And fireworks, as you can guess from their name, cause fires — more than you might think.(烟花,正如你从它的名字可以猜到的那样,会引起火灾——比你想象的要多)”和第二段中“That’s what caused a handful of California towns to quit fireworks and turn to drones last year. Sydney, Australia, known for its massive fireworks display, is considering doing the same due to the risk of wildfires.(这就是去年加州一些城镇放弃烟花转向无人机的原因。澳大利亚的悉尼以其大规模的烟花表演而闻名,由于野火的风险,正在考虑也这样做)”可知,一些城镇放弃烟花是因为它们会带来火灾风险。故选B项。
【33题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段内容,尤其是“In addition to reducing the risk of fires, drone light shows present a safer alternative for the folks behind the curtain. Fireworks injured more than 10,000 people last year because they can accidentally erupt while on the ground. Drones won’t.(除了降低火灾风险外,无人机灯光秀还为幕后人员提供了一个更安全的替代方案。去年,烟花造成10000多人受伤,因为它们可能会在地面上意外爆炸。无人机则不会)”可知,本段通过对比烟花和无人机灯光秀在安全性方面的差异,来说明无人机灯光秀的优势。由此推知,作者是通过对比的方式来展开第三段的。故选A项。
根据画线词上文“Fireworks, on the other hand, can burst your eardrum if you’re standing close enough.(另一方面,如果你站得足够近,烟花可能会震破你的耳膜)”以及后文“for some families with animals, small children, or other people who are sensitive to noise(对于一些有动物、小孩或对噪音敏感的人来说)”可知,烟花的噪音对于一些人来说是令人烦恼的。
根据最后一段“Nevertheless, it’s still too early to rush to the conclusion that drones will completely take the place of fireworks in the near future.(然而,现在就急于得出无人机将在不久的将来完全取代烟花的结论还为时过早)”可知,作者认为现在还不能得出无人机将完全取代烟花的结论,由此推知,接下来作者可能会继续谈论无人机面临的挑战。故选A项。

【答案】Possible version(1):
Hey, my friend,
How time flies! Most likely, when you read the note, I will be on the plane back to China. Here inside the box lies a farewell gift: a porcelain tea set adorned with Monet’s Water Lilies.
On the dreamy water surface, delicate water lilies blossom in tranquility. I believe you are no stranger to this at all, as we have shared its beauty while visiting the Orangerie Museum to admire the treasures of French art. Thanks to our mutual artistic pursuits, two drifting wanderers finally found each other in this unknown land, making this journey full of amazement. I remember you mentioned your family’s deep appreciation for Chinese tea culture. Given my family’s tradition of firing porcelain, I reached out to my parents. With my ideas, they carefully crafted this set. Hopefully as you and your family sip tea from it, you’ll savor the charm of tea culture in the harmony of porcelain and aroma, and recall our cherished memories.
Goodbye and good luck. In the hope to meet shortly again, and make our absence sweet.
Best wishes,
Li Hua
Possible version(2):
Dear Chris,
As our unforgettable summer exchange in Paris comes/draws to a close, I’ve compiled a handmade photo album that captures our shared experiences during this summer.
The album is a mosaic of our friendship, with each photo a piece of our story. From our first awkward introductions to our deep conversations over coffee, from our collaborative projects to our exhilarating cheers at the Olympic games, these images document our growth and the bond we’ve formed. It’s a visual diary of our laughter, our triumphs, and the memories we’ve created side by side.
As we part ways, I extend my best wishes for your future and also eagerly anticipate the day you visit China, either for study or leisure. Until then, may this album be a treasured reminder of our time together and the friendship we’ve built.
Yours,
Li Hua

It was 1978. I was eight, and it was my birthday. I was told to make a list of two or three friends who’d enjoy the water theme park in nearby Tampa, Florida. Since we didn’t have any spare money, the trip would be a packed lunch and no extras. I didn’t care - I was getting a special treat!
The great day arrived, and my mother, younger brother, three friends, and I piled into our old beat-up car. We headed out of town on the 90-minute ride to the amusement park for a day of sun and fun. About halfway to the water park, the car started running badly and the “check engine” light came on. My mom pulled the car over. We were stuck. An hour passed as we waited for someone to stop and help.
A police officer stopped to see if we were all right and called a tow truck (拖车) to pick up the car. On the way to the service station, Mom told the officer that we had been headed to the water park for my birthday treat. The officer dropped us off and left after giving me a short ride in the police car as a birthday present.
At the service station, the mechanic explained the water pump (水泵) needed to be replaced. The cost, plus the tow, would be $135. Mom started crying and pulled me aside. She explained we wouldn’t have enough money to go anywhere but home, and we’d have to save up to go somewhere else for my birthday later. I was disappointed but tried not to show it, knowing even at that age that we didn’t have much money.
We tried to make the best of the day, the six of us having a picnic at the service station with the cake Mom had baked. Eventually, the mechanic called Mom into the office, saying the repairs were completed but he had to make a phone call before we could leave. He told Mom to have a seat and wait.

Twenty minutes later, the police officer came with a wrapped present. He walked up, handed me the present, and wished me a happy birthday. Before I responded, he paid the mechanic for the repairs and tow. It was at that moment that I realized why the mechanic told Mom to wait. He was requested to do so by the police officer who promised to return to pay him. After carefully inspecting the repaired vehicle, the officer said to Mom, “I’m sorry to have kept you waiting so long. The car is working properly now. You may continue your journey.”
With great gratitude, Mom tried to give the $135 back to the officer. Whatever Mom said, the officer would not take the money. He told Mom that he knew we didn’t have much money and that my birthday trip shouldn’t be ruined because of something we had no control over. With these words, he departed hurriedly. To this day, I have been grateful for his kindness. Not only did he save my birthday trip, but he also changed my life. I always help others when I get a chance and try to instill this concept into my children’s lives.

B
This was the second time Benham had rescued Buddy says CBS13. The first was from a shelter a few years ago. “If it was your kid, what would you do?” he asked. Nodding toward Buddy, he added, “That’s my kid.”
24. What is the text mainly about?
A. A brave rescue. B. A regular routine.
C. A fearless pet dog.

28. Why was Beiwei Kaishu popular in Hong Kong after World War II?

Besides starting fires firework smoke leaves behind a trail of harmful chemicals and is considered a pollutant.

It was 1978. I was eight and it was my birthday.
