Then, adding alkalinity by dissolving substances like magnesium hydroxide (Mg(OH)₂) in the ocean produces hydroxide ions (OH⁻). Hydroxide ions react with aqueous CO₂, creating bicarbonate ions. With fewer CO₂ molecules in the water, more CO₂ from the atmosphere can enter. However, there are many unknowns.
