Earthquake in Nepal On Nov. 3rd, a 5.6-magnitude earthquake struck western Nepal and killed at least 157 people. Floods in the DRC Early May saw heavy rain fall on the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), causing flash flooding and landslides. B Emma Chen, from the United States, works as a volunteer in Hangzhou’s Liangzhu Museum, Zhejiang province. The museum was built in 2005 and shows the archaeological findings from the Liangzhu ruins. What has caught Chen’s attention the most is a ring-footed black pottery jar (陶罐) that has 12 symbols. Some experts feel it tells a story. “It says that a man caught a tiger with a net,” Chen said. “There are many different explanations, but they were probably depicting specific activities or events, carving on a jar what had happened earlier that day, the way people these days post moments on WeChat,” she said. Chen’s deep knowledge of museums is impressive, and her love connects people across the ages. She has a special gift for making ancient history come alive and attracting visitors. Her love for Chinese history happened before she was majoring in Oriental (东方的) studies. She learned Chinese during her college days in the US, and the interest finally drove her across the Pacific Ocean. Coming to China in early 2015 after graduating, she became a member of the museum’s volunteer team in 2022. Chen said her repeated visits to the museum led to them making an offer. “I remembered a worker coming up to me and asking if I wanted to do the job. I had always wanted to do it, so I agreed immediately,” she said. “I just happened to be at the right place at the right time.” Chen has visited many museums in China, such as the Yinxu Museum in Henan province and the Sanxingdui Museum in Sichuan province. But in her eyes, Liangzhu Museum is an invaluable treasure that cannot be taken the place of because she believes every word that is written on a wall in the hall of the museum, that “Liangzhu is the most specific testimony (证明) of 5,000 years of Chinese civilization”. In 2019, the Liangzhu ruins made it to the UNESCO World Heritage List. 24. What does the underlined word “depicting” mean in paragraph 2? A. Describing. B. Carving. C. Painting. D. Acting. 25. How did Chen’s love for Chinese history influence her life? A. It made her change her major in college. B. It helped her become a professional archaeologist. C. It encouraged her to learn Chinese and finally move to China. D. It led her to work at the Liangzhu Museum at once after graduation. 26. What makes the Liangzhu Museum special to Chen? A. Its size in China. B. Its historical (历史的) value. C. Its modern design. D. Its large collections. 27. What does the passage mainly talk about? A. The Liangzhu Museum in Hangzhou. B. Different kinds of museums in China. C. An American volunteer’s determination. D. An American volunteer for a Chinese museum. C Geda Qawla, who is 75, is having trouble remembering words from his native Ongota language. He’s one of only five people who can still speak it. As he gets older, he finds it harder to think of the names of things like trees and birds. “I can feel it leaving me. The others try to help me remember but they are the same, they are also forgetting and there’s no one left to teach us,” he said. Geda was afraid that as the remaining speakers age and pass away, the language may disappear with them. This is just one example of a bigger problem happening all over the world. Languages are disappearing fast, with one dying every two weeks. If things don’t change, by the end of this century, half of the 7,000 languages we have now might be gone. The ones in the most danger are those that aren’t written down and those spoken by very few people. The main reasons for this are technology and the way the world is becoming more connected. People who speak smaller languages are being pushed to stop using them and start speaking bigger languages. More people moving to new places also contributes to this, as they leave their native languages behind and learn new ones. However, some languages that were almost gone have been saved. This happened through long-term efforts to bring them back to life. These efforts included teaching them in schools, using them in the media (媒体), and even putting them on road signs. But for most languages, like Ongota, there isn’t enough money or support to do this. At Arba Minch University, some researchers are trying to save the Ongota language by making a dictionary. Some young Ongota people who have had an education also want to keep their language alive. For Savà, an Italian expert who studies people and their cultures, losing Ongota would be very sad. “When a language disappears,” he says, “you lose a special way of seeing the world that can’t be replaced (取代).” 28. What can we learn about Geda Qawla? A. He is skilled in his native language. B. He likes to teach others Ongota language. C. He is worried about the Ongota language. D. He has difficulties in remembering new words. 29. What does the author want to tell us in paragraph 3? A Which languages need to be saved. B. How technology is changing languages. C. When we can keep languages from disappearing. D. Why smaller languages are becoming less common. 30. Why does the author mention Savà in the last paragraph? A. To stress the importance of language. B. To show the hard work in saving language. C To recommend ways to view the world. D. To praise Ongota young people’s efforts. 31. What is the best title for the text? A. Technology and Language Loss. B. The Fight to Keep Languages Alive. C. The Challenge of Geda Qawla’s Language. D. Reasons for Saving the World’s Languages. D Fifty years ago, not only the archaeological community but also ordinary people were surprised at the excavation (发掘) of the Mawangdui Han Tombs. A new revision of the book Mawangdui Bamboo Slips and Silk Books was published (出版) this year to celebrate this big event. Mawangdui Han site, recognized as one of the greatest findings of the 20th century, has produced a number of cultural relics and a“library” of Han Dynasty texts preserved on silk. The first discovery of the tombs took place between 1972 and 1974, resulting in the discovery of 26,937 cultural relics. These include the remains of Lady Xin Zhui, and bamboo and silk books. The silk books, which have 1,430 items (物品) in all, include over 130,000 characters and cover more than 50 classics on different topics such as politics, medicine, literature, etc., including “I Ching” and “Tao Te Ching.” Mawangdui Bamboo Slips and Silk Books was first published in June 2014 by the Hunan Museum and Fudan University. The newly-revised book, which came out after four years of revision, offers a great all-round and really good explanation of the texts in the silk books. The repair and research process has been challenging because of the weak nature of the silk pieces, which had to be carefully divided and explained. The silk books provide valuable insights (了解) into the thoughts and knowledge of the Han Dynasty, with some classics being new to modern research. The revised book includes over 1,000 revisions and new contents, the rewriting of several classics, and description of newly uncovered silk pieces. This version has made changes to more than 60 silk items from the old one and added about 230 new silk items. The colors have been improved to make the texts and designs show up better. The research on Mawangdui is still in process, with the expectation that it will continue to grow in importance, contributing to the understanding of traditional Chinese culture and the description of China’s historical stories. 32. Why are the Mawangdui Han Tombs important? A. They include the only known silk books. B. They are the largest tombs of the Han Dynasty. C. They are the oldest discovered tombs in China. D. They provide insights into the culture of the Han Dynasty. 33. What’s the main difficulty in protecting the silk books? A. Reading old writings. B. Dealing with the soft and easily broken silk. C. Not having enough related guide books. D. Finding out hard-to-understand ideas. 34. What does the revised part of Mawangdui Bamboo Slips and Silk Books include? A. Introduction of newly discovered silk pieces. B. The historical value of cultural relics. C. A summary of the Han Dynasty. D. New excavation skills. 35. Where is this text most likely taken from? A. By October 31st, 4,352 people were known to have died, and 8,000 were still missing and thought to be dead. Floods in the DRC Early May saw heavy rain fall on the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), causing flash flooding and landslides. The flood water killed at least 438 people and left thousands more missing or homeless. Heavy rain and extreme flooding have become more common in Africa in recent years because of climate (气候) change, according to the UN. 21. To explain the reasons of increasing natural disasters. D. To review some natural disasters taking place in 2023. B 22. A 23. 根据Storm Mocha in Myanmar部分的句子“At least 145 people died because of it, many of whom were from a group called Rohingya who often face a lot of problems.(至少145人因此丧生,其中许多人来自一个叫罗辛亚人的群体,他们经常面临很多问题。)” 根据Earthquake in Nepal部分的句子“On Nov. 3rd, a 5.6-magnitude earthquake struck western Nepal and killed at least 157 people.(11月3日,尼泊尔西部发生5.6级地震,造成至少157人死亡。)” 根据Storm Daniel in Libya部分的句子“It brought a lot of rain and floods, and it broke two dams in the city. By October 31st, 4,352 people were known to have died, and 8,000 were still missing and thought to be dead.(截至10月31日,已知有4352人死亡,还有8000人失踪,据信已经死亡。)” 根据Floods in the DRC部分的句子“The flood water killed at least 438 people and left thousands more missing or homeless.(洪水造成至少438人死亡,数千人失踪或无家可归。)” 根据Storm Mocha in Myanmar部分的句子“A big storm called Mocha hit Myanmar on May 14th. It caused very fast winds and sudden floods.(5月14日,一场名为摩卡的大风暴袭击了缅甸。它造成了大风和突然的洪水。)”和Floods in the DRC部分的句子“Early May saw heavy rain fall on the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), causing flash flooding and landslides.(5月初,刚果民主共和国东部地区遭遇暴雨,引发山洪暴发和山体滑坡。)” 故选A项。 根据第一段“Actually, 2023 was host to different kinds of natural disasters, some of them taking thousands of lives at once. Here are 4 of the most dangerous natural disasters of 2023.(事实上,2023年发生了各种自然灾害,其中一些灾害一次夺去了数千人的生命。以下是2023年最危险的4场自然灾害。)”可知,本文的目的是回顾2023年发生的一些自然灾害。故选D项。 B Emma Chen, from the United States, works as a volunteer in Hangzhou’s Liangzhu Museum, Zhejiang province. 27 What does the passage mainly talk about? A. The Liangzhu Museum in Hangzhou. B. Different kinds of museums in China. C. An American volunteer’s determination. D. An American volunteer for a Chinese museum. A 25. C 26. B 27. 由文章第二段中“There are many different explanations, but they were probably depicting specific activities or events, carving on a jar what had happened earlier that day, the way people these days post moments on WeChat (有很多不同的解释,但它们可能depicting了具体的活动或事件,在罐子上刻下当天早些时候发生的事情,就像现在人们在微信上发布时刻的方式一样)”可知,这些符号可能是在描述特定的活动或事件,depicting意为“描述”,与选项A“Describing (描述)”相符。故选A。 由文章第四段中“She learned Chinese during her college days in the US, and the interest finally drove her across the Pacific Ocean. Coming to China in early 2015 after graduating, she became a member of the museum’s volunteer team in 2022. (她在美国大学期间学习了中文,这种兴趣最终驱使她横渡太平洋。毕业后,她于2015年初来到中国,2022年成为博物馆志愿者团队的一员。)”可知,她对中国历史的热爱促使她学中文,并最终来到了中国。故选C。 【26题详解】 推理判断题。由文章最后一段中“But in her eyes, Liangzhu Museum is an invaluable treasure that cannot be taken the place of because she believes every word that is written on a wall in the hall of the museum, that “Liangzhu is the most specific testimony (证明) of 5,000 years of Chinese civilization”. (但在她眼中,良渚博物馆是一件无法替代的无价之宝,因为她相信博物馆大厅墙上写的每一句话,“良渚是中华文明五千年最具体的见证”。)”可知,良渚博物馆对她来说特别之处在于它的历史价值。故选B。 【27题详解】 主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是由文章第一段“Emma Chen, from the United States, works as a volunteer in Hangzhou’s Liangzhu Museum, Zhejiang province. The museum was built in 2005 and shows the archaeological findings from the Liangzhu ruins. (来自美国Emma Chen在浙江省杭州市良渚博物馆做志愿者。该博物馆建于2005年,展示了良渚遗址的考古发现。)”可知,文章主要讲述了来自美国的志愿者Emma Chen在杭州良渚博物馆做志愿者,向游客讲述中国历史的故事。由此可知,D选项“An American volunteer for a Chinese museum. (一位为中国博物馆服务的美国志愿者)”最符合文章主旨。故选D。 C Geda Qawla, who is 75, is having trouble remembering words from his native Ongota language. A. Which languages need to be saved. B. How technology is changing languages. C. When we can keep languages from disappearing. D. Why smaller languages are becoming less common. 30. Why does the author mention Savà in the last paragraph? A. To stress the importance of language. B. To show the hard work in saving language. C. To recommend ways to view the world. D. To praise Ongota young people’s efforts. 31. What is the best title for the text? A. Technology and Language Loss. B. The Fight to Keep Languages Alive. C. The Challenge of Geda Qawla’s Language. D. Reasons for Saving the World’s Languages. C 29. D 30. A 31. 根据第一段“Geda was afraid that as the remaining speakers age and pass away, the language may disappear with them.(Geda担心,随着剩下的使用者年龄的增长和死亡,这种语言可能会随着他们的消失而消失。)” 根据第三段“The main reasons for this are technology and the way the world is becoming more connected. People who speak smaller languages are being pushed to stop using them and start speaking bigger languages. More people moving to new places also contributes to this, as they leave their native languages behind and learn new ones.(造成这种情况的主要原因是技术和世界联系越来越紧密的方式。说小语种的人被迫停止使用小语种,开始说大语种。越来越多的人搬到新的地方也有助于这一点,因为他们离开自己的母语,学习新的语言。)”可知,作者在第三段想告诉我们为什么小语种越来越不常见。故选D。 【30题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段“For Savà, an Italian expert who studies people and their cultures, losing Ongota would be very sad. “When a language disappears,” he says, “you lose a special way of seeing the world that can’t be replaced (取代).”(对于研究人类及其文化的意大利专家Savà来说,失去Ongota将是非常悲伤的。“当一种语言消失,”他说,“你就失去了一种看世界的特殊方式,这种方式无法被取代。”)”可知,作者在最后一段提到Savà是为了强调语言的重要性。故选A。 通读全文,尤其是第二段“Languages are disappearing fast, with one dying every two weeks. If things don’t change, by the end of this century, half of the 7,000 languages we have now might be gone. 32.
