Emily had always loved to draw. From a young age, she spent hours sketching scenes from her imagination and copying pictures from her favorite storybooks. Her parents noticed her talent and encouraged her to pursue her passion.
When Emily started high school, she joined an art club. She was excited to meet other students who shared her love for art. However, she soon realized that many of them were more skilled and experienced than she was. Emily began to doubt her own abilities and considered quitting the club.
One day, the art teacher, Mrs Johnson, announced a school-wide art competition. The theme was “Dreams and Aspirations”. Emily hesitated to participate, fearing her work would not be good enough. But Mrs. Johnson saw potential in Emily and encouraged her to enter the competition.
Emily decided to give it a try. She spent weeks working on her piece, pouring her heart and soul into it. She drew a young girl standing on a hill, looking out at a vibrant sunrise, with a path leading towards a distant city. The girl’s expression was one of determination and hope.
When the day of the competition arrived, Emily was nervous but proud of her work. To her surprise, she won first place. The judges praised her creativity and the emotional depth of her drawing. Emily’s confidence soared, and she realized that her passion and hard work could lead to success.

Bamboo farming is on the rise in Uganda. The strong and fast-growing crop is seen as having real growth possibility.
Along a 3-kilometer stretch of the River Rwizi, environment protection officers recently planted new bamboo and cleared room for last year’s survivors to grow. The River Rwizi is the most important river in western Uganda that includes the major city of Mbarara. A successful bamboo forest will prevent the river from being damaged by people, including sand miners, farmers and others whose activities have long threatened it.
“Once bamboo is established, it is almost like a net,” says Jeconious Musingwire. He is an environmental officer who is the project’s technical advisor. “The roots trap everything, including the surface runoff, and stabilize the weaknesses of the banks.”
In Uganda, bamboo can be burned for fuel in rural communities, taking pressure off decreasing forests of eucalyptus (桉树) and other natural resources. It is a strong plant that can grow almost anywhere, even in the face of natural disasters. And businesses can turn it into products ranging from furniture to toothpicks.
The Ugandan government has set a 10-year policy that calls for planting 300, 000 hectares of bamboo. Most of it will be grown on private land by 2029 as part of wider reforestation efforts. That is a high target. The Uganda Bamboo Association, the largest such group with340 members, has planted only 500 hectares. Even with growing interest in bamboo farming. officials will have to push more farmers in rural parts of Uganda to plant large areas of land with bamboo.
A single bamboo pole brings in a little less than a dollar, so farmers need to grow a lot to earn enough. Bamboo promoters are encouraging them to see a bamboo plantation as the same kind of money-making crop as coffee or tea, Banks are lending bamboo “plantation capital” money that promises ownership of large bamboo forests.
8. Why did the Ugandan officers plant new bamboo?
A. To increase tourism. B. To fight natural disasters.
C. To protect a river. D. To provide a shelter for people.
9. Which word best describes bamboo?
A. Weak. B. Adaptable. C. Sticky. D. Endangered.
10. What can we learn about the policy from paragraph 5?
A. Its progress is ahead of schedule. B. It draws little attention.
C. Its effect is obvious. D. It is challenging.
11. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Bamboo Sees Growing Interest in Uganda
B. Ugandan Farmers Become Rich with Bamboo
C. Uganda Thinks Bamboo as the Most Valuable Plant
D. Bamboo Replaces Other Money-making Crops in Uganda
【答案】8. C 9. B 10. D 11. A

Microplastics are found nearly everywhere on Earth and can be harmful to animals if they’re taken in. But it’s hard to remove such tiny particles (微粒) from the environment, especially once they settle into corners and cracks at the bottom of waterways. Now, researchers in ACS’ Nano Letters have created a light-activated fish robot that “swims” around quickly, picking up and removing microplastics from the environment.
Because microplastics can fall into cracks, they’ve been hard to remove from water environments. One solution that has been proposed is using small, flexible (柔韧的), and self-propelled robots to reach these pollutants and clean them up. But the traditional materials used for soft robots can be damaged easily in water environments. Another material called mother-of-pearl, also known as nacre, is strong and flexible, and is found on the inside surface of shells. Inspired by this natural substance, Xinxing Zhang and his colleagues wanted to try a similar type of gradient structure to create a durable (耐用的) and bendable material for soft robots.
Using the material, the researchers have created a fish robot that could move 2.67 body lengths per second — a speed that’s faster than previously reported for other soft swimming robots. The researchers showed that the swimming fish robot could repeatedly take in nearby microplastics and transport them elsewhere.
The material could also recover itself after being cut, still keeping its ability to take in microplastics. Because of the durability and speed of the fish robot, the researchers say that it could be used for monitoring microplastics and other pollutants in tough water environments.
12. Why are microplastics hard to remove?
A. Because they are hard to find.
B. Because there are no tools to use.
C. Because they are in large quantities.
D. Because they are too small and hide in corners and cracks.
13. Which is a disadvantage of traditional materials?
A. Difficult to store.
B. Rare to find.
C. Easy to damage.
D. Expensive to produce.
14. What mainly makes the fish robot suitable for monitoring microplastics?
A. Its durability. B. Its size.
C. Its weight. D. Its shape.
15. Where is the text likely from?
A. A fiction. B. A magazine. C. A film. D. A diary.
【答案】12. D 13. C 14. A 15. B

【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“But the traditional materials used for soft robots can be damaged easily in water environments. (但是用于软体机器人的传统材料在水环境中容易损坏)”可知,用于软体机器人的传统材料的劣势是容易在水环境中受损。故选C项。
【14题详解】

(这种材料在被切割后还可以自我恢复,仍然保持吸收微塑料的能力。研究人员表示,由于鱼形机器人的耐用性和速度,它可以用于监测恶劣水环境中的微塑料和其他污染物)”可知,鱼形机器人的耐用性使其适合在复杂的水环境中监测和清除微塑料。故选A项。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。通读全文,尤其是第一段中“Now, researchers in ACS’ Nano Letters have created a light-activated fish robot that “swims” around quickly, picking up and removing microplastics from the environment. What to do when your home is flooded
The biggest threat (威胁) in a hurricane (飓风) is not the wind, but the water. Flooding from heavy rain can happen just at any time, anywhere, as climate change makes violent downpours more common.
As the water falls back, the long, slow process of recovery begins. ___16___, and how to start picking up the pieces when the water is gone.
Turn off the electricity and gas. The Federal Emergency Management Agency says the first thing you should do is check for things like damaged power, gas lines and cracks in the foundation to make sure it’s safe to go inside. If it is, and there’s no standing water in the house, turn off the electricity. ___17___. And put distance between you and the house.
Do not go in the floodwater. ___18___. It may get you an electric shock, and there are often ruins, sewage and poisonous chemicals in it. So, if you can wait for the water to fall back or for help to come, that’s your best bet, says Jennifer Horney, a professor at the University of Delaware who studies the public-health impacts of disasters.
___19___. Use your cellphone to take a ton of pictures of the outside and the inside of your house. You’re documenting the damage and trying to show how high the water got. That’s important for making an insurance claim or applying for federal assistance.
From this article, you can have a good understanding of how to deal with a flooded home. ___20___.
A. Take photos

第二节 (满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Last summer, our family went on a road trip to our neighboring city, Seattle, for a vacation. It was an exciting adventure for all of us: my parents, my six-year-old sister Kelly and I. The journey was filled with laughter and joy as we sang songs and shared stories, also expressing the anticipation of the new adventure.
As we drove along the way, we noticed a car parking by the roadside with its lights blinking (闪烁). A man stood by the car, a look of helplessness on his face as he stared at his car. My father, always a warm-hearted man, slowed down and pulled over to offer assistance. We all got out of the car, curious and concerned about the situation.
The man, introducing himself as Samon, explained that he had a flat tire (轮胎), and he had called for roadside assistance and was waiting for help. But he said his one-year-old son was inside the car, crying and clearly upset by the delay. Kelly, with a warm heart, decided to give her favorite toy to the little boy to comfort him. The toy, with a jingling sound, made the boy’s tears stop right away, even bringing a smile to the boy’s face. Samon thanked us profusely (多次).
Then we continued on our way with a renewed sense of happiness. Upon arriving in Seattle, we were amazed by everything of the city. We explored the vibrant Pike Place Market and watched as fishmongers threw fish to one another with practiced ease, their customers cheering them on. My sister’s eyes sparkled with excitement as she received a flower from a kind trader. We spent three days enjoying immersive exploration in Seattle.
After that, we decided it was time to head back home. Before we left, my father made a reservation in a famous local restaurant to say goodbye to the city with a memorable meal.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
As we entered the restaurant, we were greeted by a familiar face.

That night, as we drove back home, we reflected on (回想) our trip.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
As we entered the restaurant, we were greeted by a familiar face. To our surprise, it was Samon who approached our table with a look of astonishment and gratitude. He explained that it was purely coincidental that he was dining at the same restaurant to celebrate his son’s first birthday. The little boy, still with Kelly’s toy, lit up with joy upon seeing us. Samon thanked us again and insisted on treating our dinner. Over the course of the meal, we shared stories about our lives and exchanged contact information, promising to keep in touch.
That night, as we drove back home, we reflected on (回想) our trip. Seattle’s sights were amazing, but the true highlight was the lesson in compassion. Helping Samon showed us how small actions can have big impacts. Kelly sat quietly in the back seat and smiled, remembering her sacrifice for the crying child. Our journey was not just about exploring a city but also about discovering the joy that comes from connecting with others through acts of kindness, leaving us with a lasting sense of fulfillment.

From that moment on, Emily continued to pursue her art with renewed determination. She learned that believing in herself and not giving up were key to achieving her dreams. Her journey as a young artist had just begun, and she was excited at what the future held.

A. A fiction. B. A magazine. C. A film. D. A diary.

注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
