Bless you, Mr sea sponge Achoo!
Scientists from the Netherlands have found that sea sponges (海绵) can sneeze (打喷嚏). They work a bit like chimneys. The little holes on their bodies bring in food from the water, and the big hole on the top lets out waste. But sometimes, the sponges need to sneeze to push out sand and rocks from their bodies.
Feel thirsty on the plane
When we fly on a plane, our body can lose eight percent of its water. One reason is that the air inside the plane is dry, and we lose water when we breathe. As the plane flies higher, there is less oxygen in the air. So we need to breathe more often, and more water gets lost. What’s more, sitting for a long time makes it harder for blood to move around the body and can cause dehydration (脱水).
Burping is worse in space
In space, it is hard to burp (打嗝) nicely. On Earth, gravity (重力) helps pull food and drinks down our stomachs and makes air go up and get out of our mouths. But there is no gravity in space. Everything floats (漂浮) around and mixes together. When astronauts try to burp, food and drinks can come up, too. So, they have to burp with their mouths closed.
1 Why do sea sponges need to sneeze?
A. To bring in food from the water. B. To breathe more often.
C. To push out sand and rocks from their bodies. D. To lose their water.
2. Which of the following is TRUE according to the text?
A. Scientists from England have found that sea sponges can sneeze.
B. When we fly on a plane, our body can lose 18% of its water.
C. Sitting for a long time makes it harder for water to move around the body.
D. In space, everything floats around and mixes together.
3. In which part of the magazine can we read the text?
A. Sports. B. Science. C. History. D. Culture.

Do you get angry easily? There was once a man who was always angry with others. So he couldn’t get along with them. One day he heard there lived a sculptor (雕刻家) by the sea who could help him control his temper (脾气). So he went to pay a formal visit to him. He said to the sculptor, “Why is my temper so bad? Can I change it?”
The sculptor said with a smile, “Yes, you can.” He gave the man a bag of fist-sized stones and told him, “Each time you lose your temper, polish the edges and corners (棱角) of one stone.”
The man returned home with the stones. He remembered the sculptor’s words: each time you lose your temper, polish the edges and corners of one stone. Day after day, the stones in the bag were getting fewer and fewer while his temper changed a lot.
A few years later, he went to see the sculptor with the polished stones. The sculptor let him recall. As long as he forgot an unpleasant thing, he would put a stone on the beach. The man tried to think hard, but he had no idea of the story of many unpleasant things. So the smooth stones filled the beach.
The sculptor said, “Look at these stones, which had edges and corners but a few years later were almost the same as pebbles (鹅卵石). In fact, the pebbles had edges and corners at first, but after years of ebb and flow (潮涨潮落) they became smooth.”
With the words, the sculptor picked up a stone, pointed to the print on the beach and said, “The bigger edges and corners the stones have on the beach, the deeper their prints will leave. Similarly people are like stones: each time you lose your temper, you will leave a print in the heart of the other side. The acuter (尖锐的) the stone is in your heart, the harsher (刺耳的) your words are and the more serious harm the other side will suffer. So you have to learn to polish the stones in your heart.”
4. How does the writer lead in the story?
A. By telling the story. B. By listing the numbers.
C. By asking the question. D. By comparing facts.
5. How did the man feel at the beginning of the story?
A. Bored. B. Relaxed. C. Surprised. D. Worried.
6. Which is the correct time order of the following events?
①The sculptor gave the man a bag of fist-sized stones and told him to polish the stones.
②The man went to see the sculptor with the polished stones.
③ The man was always angry with others and went to visit to a sculptor.
④The man has learned to polish the stones in his heart and controlled his temper.
A. ③①④② B. ③①②④ C. ①③④② D. ①③②④
7. The writer writes the passage to tell us ________.
A to control our anger B. to visit a sculptor when necessary
C to collect stones by the sea D. to relax on the beach

①On Nov. 5, LignoSat, the world’s first wooden satellite (卫星), went into space from Florida, US, reported The Guardian.
②LignoSat was developed by the Kyoto University and the company Sumitomo Forestry in Japan. Shaped like a little cube (立方体), the satellite is only about the size of your hand. It will fly around Earth at a height of about 400 kilometers.
③The goal is to see if wood can be used for future space missions(任务). LignoSat is made from a kind of magnolia tree traditionally used to make sword cases (剑鞘) in Japan. The satellite will spend six months in space. The electronic sensors on it will record its performance for scientists to check if it can deal with the hard environment in space. There, it can be as cold as -100° and as hot as 100 ℃.
④Wood is a good choice for space missions because there is no water or air there to make it rot (腐烂) or catch fire, Koji Murata, a scientist at Kyoto University, told Reuters.
⑤Wooden satellites can help protect the environment because people can grow more wood. This makes it renewable.
⑥What’s more, satellites made of wood do not add to air pollution. When satellites stop working, they are usually sent back to Earth to burn up in the air. In this process, metal satellites can leave harmful particles (颗粒) behind. But wooden ones burn up cleanly without causing pollution.
8. What does the underlined word “sensor” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. 感觉器官 B. 感应器 C. 感知者 D. 感觉
9. Why is wood considered a good material for space, according to Kōji MAurata?
A. It does not rot or catch fire in space. B. It causes less pollution.
C. It can withstand bad weather. D. It uses less energy.
10. How do wooden satellites help the environment?
A. They are cheaper to produce.
B. They are easier to recycle.
C. They can collect harmful particles in space.
D. They can burn up cleanly on the way back to Earth.
11. What is the passage mainly about?
A. The media’s views on the recently launched satellite.
B. A study of a newly invented material for future space use.
C. An introduction to the recently launched special satellite.
D. The successful launch of a satellite to a new position.

①In China, when students finish college, they usually either keep studying or start working. Getting a master’s degree (硕士学位) has been very popular in the last few years. But now it seems that this is changing.
②On Nov 21, the Ministry of Education said that 3.88 million people will take part in this year’s exams to get into master’s degree programs. This sounds like a lot, but the number is 500,000 less than that of last year and 860,000 less than the year before.
③One reason for the drop might be that studying for a master’s degree has become very expensive, CCTV reported. For example, to study for a financial (金融) master’s degree at the Shanghai University of Finance and Economics takes 228,000 yuan in total. Many universities don’t give their students free housing, so students have to pay a lot of rent (房租).
④Also, having a master’s degree might not help much in getting a good job now, according to Xiong Bingqi, director of the Century Education Research Institute. “Many people with high degrees are ending up in low-paying jobs,” Xiong told Changjiang Daily. Because of this, some students are choosing vocational schools (职业学校) instead. They think learning specific skills might help them get jobs more easily.
⑤In this case, experts suggest that colleges should do more to help students learn what they need for future jobs. Also, schools should change their programs to match what companies are looking for.
12. What does the writer want to show with the numbers in Paragraph 2?
A. Getting a master’s degree is less popular. B. More people are studying for a master’s degree.
C. The master’s degree is not important anymore. D. Chinese people are getting a better education.
13. According to Paragraph 3, why might fewer people be taking master’s degree exams?
A. The exams have become too hard. B. They prefer to start to work sooner.
C. Getting a master’s degree costs too much. D. They find it hard to rent a place for studying.
14. What does Xiong Bingqi think of having a master’s degree?
A. It’s not useful anymore. B. It’s not as useful as it once was.
C. It’s only useful for certain types of jobs. D. It’s very important for finding a job.
15. Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage?
A. B. C. D.

The acuter (尖锐) the stone is in your heart, the harsher (刺耳的) your words are and the more serious harm the other side will suffer. So you have to learn to polish the stones in your heart.”

【13题详解】

【答案】例文
As I entered the third year of junior high, I noticed quite a few changes in my life. One of the most significant changes is in my studies. In the past, I usually hanged out with my friends. I even forgot to do my homework. I now spend more time studying and less time on leisure activities. I can manage my time more effectively.
Another change is in my daily life. I had more time to play computer games. I hardly played sports. I enjoyed eating junk food. So I was fat and unhealthy. But now I learn how to do housework and cook. I pay attention to my healthy. I eat more fruit and vegetables. Also, I play basketball twice a week. And now I become more confident. I can do well in my all lessons.
Overall, I think these changes are positive and necessary for my growth. I am grateful for the experiences I’ve had and look forward to the continued transformation as I move forward in my educational journey.
