Early spring can be a tough time in the Midwest. It can take both people and animals by surprise with its unexpected snowstorms.
My house is built in a high position so that my backyard overlooks a large lake. Every spring, migratory birds (候鸟) camp out in the lake on the way to their summer habitats. This year, among others, hundreds of scaups, a type of diving (潜水) duck, spent several days hanging out there, diving for food. Then the snowstorm hit, followed by a very cold night. As the open water of the lake became increasingly smaller, the scaups took off for a more livable habitat.
The next morning, I found that all birds had disappeared overnight except one lone female, who was diving energetically in her little circle of open water. Her movements and body heat had kept the ice from coming close. She bravely swam around as I watched her from the comfort of my warm home.
As time passed, the open water around the duck got smaller and smaller, and her movements slowed. Obviously, she was in danger. I watched with anxiety as she finally stopped moving, and I feared she was dead. Then it happened.
Two more ducks suddenly appeared, landing next to her still body. And then more ducks came, and the circle of water came alive with their swimming and diving. Within minutes, the lone female, too was swimming and diving happily, returning to consciousness (知觉) due to her friends’ arrival.
This little duck’s friends probably saved her life. She wouldn’t have lasted another night in the frozen lake. And she, in turn, had done them a favor by keeping that small area of water open, so they had a place to stop and refresh themselves. It made me consider how we could have a deep effect on the people around us. A look, an action, a few words or even the fact that we were there might brighten someone’s day. It might change one’s path, or even save one’s life.
1. What drove the ducks to leave the lake overnight?
A. Lack of enough food.
B. Sudden temperature change.
C. Desire for their summer habitat.
D. Disappearance of other migratory birds.
2. How did the two ducks save the lone duck?
A. By helping her to land.
B. By warming her cold body.
C. By calling more ducks for help.
D. By stopping the ice coming close.
3. What can we learn from the story?
A. Actions speak louder than words.
B. Action is the only way to success.
C. Only action can add strength to life.
D. Individual action makes a difference.

As the open water of the lake became increasingly smaller, the scaups took off for a more livable habitat.

和倒数第二段“Two more ducks suddenly appeared, landing next to her still body. And then more ducks came, and the circle of water came alive with their swimming and diving. Within minutes, the lone female, too was swimming and diving happily, returning to consciousness (知觉) due to her friends’ arrival.

On February 13, 2023, Wu Yibing made history, beating John Isner in a thrilling three-set final at the Dallas Open to become the first man from China to win an ATP title.
Brought to a tennis court for the first time at just five, first encouraged by his parents as an exercise to lose weight, Wu soon had his talent discovered by his provincial junior team, starting a journey that would change the history of men’s tennis in China. In 2017, Wu shot to prominence after winning the US Open boys’ tournament at 18 to become the first Chinese to win a major junior title, raising high hopes for the “Wonder Boy” to change the fortune of Chinese men in a sport long dominated (主导) by women’s success on the professional stage.
In 2018, Wu won his first ATP Challenger title in Shanghai. However, the competitive nature of men’s pro tennis hit the rising Wu with a tough reminder after multiple injuries — to his elbow, lower back, shoulder and wrist — forced him to be away from the ATP Tour for close to three years.
He made his return last year and won three ATP Challenger titles before qualifying for the US Open. “Looking back, I feel like I wouldn’t have been here if not for the ups and downs over the past few years. I take all the challenges and struggles as an inspiration that helps me grow up mentally now,” said Wu. “Of course there were a lot of doubts because I had operation and the recovery wasn’t going well. The championship today was a reward for all the hard work and everyone who’s supported me along the way.”
4. What does the underlined phrase “shot to prominence” in paragraph 2 mean?
A Got a certain title.
B. Realized his dream.
C. Broke a world record.
D. Became world-famous overnight.
5. What prevented Wu joining in the ATP Tour after 2018?
A. Physical injuries.
B. Tough competition.
C. Pressure from the public.
D. Failure to meet the standard.
6. What is the best title for the passage?
A A Pioneer in the Men’s Tennis World.
B. A Young Man’s Life Full of Ups and Downs.
C. A Rising Chinese Tennis Star Making History.
D. A Talented Boy Winning a World Tennis Title.

Technological progress sometimes shocks me. At the end of last year, a company called OpenAI made a new AI technology public. It feels equivalent to going straight from the Wright Brothers to a Boeing 747. And I truly think it is going to change the world.
The technology is called ChatGPT and what exactly is it? ChatGPT is a computer program that can understand and respond to human language. It is trained on a lot of text, so it can understand what people are saying and respond in a way that sounds like a real person.
What’s amazing is that it seems to have the ability to understand questions and answer them quickly and clearly. “Write a story about Boris Johnson in the style of Roald Dahl,” you can ask it, and it’ll make up a pretty good children’s story. One area where I’ve found it greatly useful is that it can write computer code. This particularly amazed me as it has to be accurate and carefully structured.
It isn't, however, completely human-like. For example, it sometimes produces things that sound true, but are just nonsense. And it can’t do maths—I asked it what is the square root of 717,409 and it told me the answer is “approximately 838.8” (the answer is actually 847).
In both cases, this is because of the way the AI learns through pattern recognition. There’s no real intelligence there—it is just regurgitating (照搬) something based on what it has “read” before. So it is better at some tasks than others—it can write a brilliant, sincere-sounding message, but its ability to rhyme (押韵) leaves a lot to be desired.
Anyway, I’m pretty sure that ChatGPT is going to change the world. Our computer will no longer be just our word processor, but our writing partner too. So now I’m just hoping that my editor doesn’t decide it could write a pretty good technology article without me.
7. What does the author want to show with the underlined sentence in paragraph 1?
A. The importance of technological progress.
B. The convenience of modern transportation.
C. The amazing development of AI technology.
D. The rapid development of airplane industry.
8. Why does the author say ChatGPT isn’t completely human-like?
A. Because it can’t do maths correctly.
B. Because it will make nonsense.
C. Because it can’t understand humans.
D. Because it has no real intelligence.
9. What can ChatGPT do according to the text?
A. Write a rhymed poem.
B. Create a story in its own style.
C. Help you do your maths homework.
D. Write a story similar to a famous writer’s.
10. What can we infer about the author from the text?
A. He’s a chief editor.
B. He’s a science researchers.
C. He’s a magazine writer.
D. He’s a computer programmer.
C 8. D 9. D 10. C

Do you have difficulty falling asleep? Do you find it hard to sleep deeply? ____11____ Don’t worry, experts have offered you some tips on how to make yourself a sound sleeper.
Make a schedule, and stick to it. Melatonin (褪黑素) is a hormone produced by the body to control when you get sleepy and when you wake up. To work well, the release of this hormone needs to occur at regular times. If your bedtime and wake-up time change from day to day or on weekends, your sleep rhythms will be unpredictable and the body won’t know how to respond. ____12____
Don’t lay in bed awake. The best sleep tip you can ever give somebody is get up — don’t lay in bed awake but not sleeping. ____13____ Because lying in bed awake can form a link in your brain that can lead to chronic insomnia Instead of being a restful spot where you peacefully fall asleep, your bed becomes an anxious place where you toss and turn and wake up tired.
____14____ Many people view sleeping as the final thing they have to do in a jam-packed day. It is worth postponing to catch up on housework, schoolwork, office work or the latest television series. This thinking needs to be changed. ____15____ Instead, see your sleep as the amount of time you need to set yourself up for a productive tomorrow. It may sound like a small change in thinking, but it’s an important one.
A. Stay positive about sleep.
B. For what is that so important?
C. Change your attitude towards sleep.
D. You may suffer from other sleeping problems.
E. So it is necessary to form a good sleeping habit.
F. Don’t see your sleep as the amount of time you have left in your day.
G. Therefore, it’s important to have a standard wake-up time, even on weekends.
D 12. G 13. B 14. C 15. F

第I卷
A
Early spring can be a tough time in the Midwest.
B
A. Got a certain title.
B. Realized his dream.
C. Broke a world record.
D. Became world-famous overnight.
5. What prevented Wu joining in the ATP Tour after 2018?
A. Physical injuries.
B. Tough competition.
C. Pressure from the public.
D. Failure to meet the standard.
6. What is the best title for the passage?
A. A Pioneer in the Men’s Tennis World.
B. A Young Man’s Life Full of Ups and Downs.
C A Rising Chinese Tennis Star Making History.
D. A Talented Boy Winning a World Tennis Title.
C
9 What can ChatGPT do according to the text?

This thinking needs to be changed. ____15____ Instead, see your sleep as the amount of time you need to set yourself up for a productive tomorrow. It may sound like a small change in thinking, but it’s an important one.
